Abstract:In this paper, we present several necessary conditions for the reversed Dickson polynomial $E_{n}(1, x)$ of the second kind to be a permutation of $\mathbb{F}_{q}$. In particular, we give explicit evaluation of the sum $\sum_{a\in \mathbb{F}_{q}}E_{n}(1,a)$.

We also study the permutation behaviour of reversed Dickson polynomials of the first kind and second kind over $\mathbb{Z}_m$. Moreover, we prove two special cases of a conjecture on the permutation behaviour of reversed Dickson polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_p$.

Abstract:Let $p$ be an odd prime. In this paper, we study the permutation behaviour of the reversed Dickson polynomials of the $(k+1)$-th kind $D_{n,k}(1,x)$ when $n=p^{l_1}+3$, $n=p^{l_1}+p^{l_2}+p^{l_3}$, and $n=p^{l_1}+p^{l_2}+p^{l_3}+p^{l_4}$, where $l_1, l_2$, $l_3$, and $l_4$ are non-negative integers. A generalization to $n=p^{l_1}+p^{l_2}+\cdots +p^{l_i}$ is also shown. We find some conditions under which $D_{n,k}(1,x)$ is not a permutation polynomial over finite fields for certain values of $n$ and $k$. We also present a generalization of a recent result regarding $D_{p^l-1,1}(1,x)$ and present some algebraic and arithmetic properties of $D_{n,k}(1,x)$.

Abstract:Permutation polynomials over finite fields constitute an active research area and have applications in many areas of science and engineering. In this paper, four classes of monomial complete permutation polynomials and one class of trinomial complete permutation polynomials are presented, one of which confirms a conjecture proposed by Wu et al. (Sci China Math 58:2081–2094, 2015 ). Furthermore, we give two classes of permutation trinomial, and make some progress on a conjecture about the differential uniformity of power permutation polynomials proposed by Blondeau et al. (Int J Inf Coding Theory 1:149–170, 2010 ).

Abstract:In this paper, we construct several new permutation polynomials over finite fields. First, using the linearized polynomials, we construct the permutation polynomial of the form $\sum_{i=1}^k(L_{i}(x)+\gamma_i)h_i(B(x))$ over ${\bf F}_{q^{m}}$, where $L_i(x)$ and $B(x)$ are linearized polynomials. This extends a theorem of Coulter, Henderson and Matthews. Consequently, we generalize a result of Marcos by constructing permutation polynomials of the forms $x h(\lambda_{j}(x))$ and $xh(\mu_{j}(x))$, where $\lambda_{j}(x)$ is the $j$-th elementary symmetric polynomial of $x, x^{q}, ..., x^{q^{m-1}}$ and $\mu_{j}(x)=\textup{Tr}_{{\bf F}_{q^{m}}/{\bf F}_{q}}(x^{j})$. This answers an open problem raised by Zieve in 2010. Finally, by using the linear translator, we construct the permutation polynomial of the form $L_1(x)+L_{2}(\gamma)h(f(x))$ over ${\bf F}_{q^{m}}$, which extends a result of Kyureghyan.

Abstract:Let $D$ denote the set of directions determined by the graph of a polynomial $f$ of $\mathbb{F}_q[x]$, where $q$ is a power of the prime $p$. If $D$ is contained in a multiplicative subgroup $M$ of $\mathbb{F}_q^\times$, then by a result of Carlitz and McConnel it follows that $f(x)=ax^{p^k}+b$ for some $k\in \mathbb{N}$. Of course, if $D\subseteq M$, then $0\notin D$ and hence $f$ is a permutation. If we assume the weaker condition $D\subseteq M \cup \{0\}$, then $f$ is not necessarily a permutation, but Sziklai conjectured that $f(x)=ax^{p^k}+b$ follows also in this case. When $q$ is odd, and the index of $M$ is even, then a result of Ball, Blokhuis, Brouwer, Storme and Sz\H onyi combined with a result of McGuire and Göloğlu proves the conjecture. Assume $°f\geq 1$. We prove that if the size of $D^{-1}D=\{d^{-1}d' : d\in D\setminus \{0\},\, d'\in D\}$ is less than $q-°f+2$, then $f$ is a permutation of $\mathbb{F}_q$. We use this result to verify the conjecture of Sziklai.

Constructing permutation polynomials using generalized Redei functions

Abstract:We determine all permutations in two large classes of polynomials over finite fields, where the construction of the polynomials in each class involves the denominators of a class of rational functions generalizing the classical Redei functions. Our results generalize eight recent results from the literature, and our proofs of our more general results are much shorter and simpler than the previous proofs of special cases.

Abstract:In this note, the first-order Dickson polynomials are introduced through a particular case of the expression of the trace of the $n^{th}$ power of a matrix in terms of powers of the trace and determinant of the matrix itself. The technique relies on the Cayley-Hamilton theorem and its application to the derivation of formulas due to Carlitz and to second-order Dickson polynomials is straightforward. Finally, generalization of Dickson polynomials over finite fields and multivariate Dickson polynomials are evoked as potential avenues of investigation in the same framework.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce polynomials (in $t$) of signed relative derangements that track the number of signed elements. The polynomials are clearly seen to be in a sense symmetric. Note that relative derangements are those without any signed elements, i.e., the evaluations of the polynomials at $t=0$. Also, the numbers of all signed relative derangements are given by the evaluations at $t=1$. Then the coefficients of the polynomials connect unsigned and signed relative derangements and show how putting elements with signs affects the formation of derangements. We first prove a recursion satisfied by these polynomials which results in a recursion satisfied by the coefficients. A combinatorial proof of the latter is provided next. We also show that the sequences of the coefficients are unimodal. Moreover, other results are obtained. For instance, a kind of dual of a relation between signed derangements and signed relative derangements previously proved by Chen and Zhang is presented.

Abstract:Recently, P. Yuan presented a local method to find permutation polynomials and their compositional inverses over finite fields. The work of P. Yuan inspires us to compute the compositional inverses of three classes of the permutation polynomials: (a) the permutation polynomials of the form $ax^q+bx+(x^q-x)^k$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^2},$ where $a+b \in \mathbb{F}_q^*$ or $a^q=b;$ (b) the permutation polynomials of the forms $f(x)=-x+x^{(q^2+1)/2}+x^{(q^3+q)/2} $ and $f(x)+x$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^3};$ (c) the permutation polynomial of the form $A^{m}(x)+L(x)$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n},$ where ${\rm Im}(A(x))$ is a vector space with dimension $1$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ and $L(x)$ is not a linearized permutation polynomial.

Abstract:Dumortier and Roussarie proposed a conjecture in their paper (2009, Discrete Con. Dyn. Sys., 2,723-781): For any \begin{document}$ q\in {\mathbb{N}} $\end{document} , the Abelian integrals \begin{document}$ J_{2j+1}(h) = \int_{\gamma_h}x^{2j-1}\,\mathrm dy $\end{document} , \begin{document}$ j = 0, 1, 2, \cdots, q $\end{document} , form a strict Chebyshev system on intervals \begin{document}$ h\in (0, \frac{1}{2}] $\end{document} , where \begin{document}$ \gamma_h = \{(x, y)| \mathrm e^{-2y}(y+\frac{1}{2}-x^2) = h\} $\end{document} . If this conjecture holds, then they obtain the precise upper bound of the number of limit cycles that appear near a slow-fast Hopf point of any codimension. In the present paper we develop a method to estimate the number of zeros of Abelian integrals and prove this conjecture.

Abstract:Let $\mathbb{N}$ denote the set of non-negative integers. Haglund, Wilson, and the second author have conjectured that the coefficient of any Schur function $s_\lambda[X]$ in $\Delta_{e_k} e_n[X]$ is a polynomial in $\mathbb{N}[q,t]$. We present four proofs of a stronger statement in the case $k=2$; We show that the coefficient of any Schur function $s_\lambda[X]$ in $\Delta_{e_2} e_n[X]$ has a positive expansion in terms of $q,t$-analogs.

Abstract: Recently, there has been a lot of work on constructions of permutation polynomials of the form $(x^{2^m}+x+\delta)^{s}+x$ over the finite field $\F_{2^{2m}}$, especially in the case when $s$ is of the form $s=i(2^m-1)+1$ (Niho exponent). In this paper, we further investigate permutation polynomials with this form. Instead of seeking for sporadic constructions of the parameter $i$, we give a general sufficient condition on $i$ such that $(x^{2^m}+x+\delta)^{i(2^m-1)+1}+x$ permutes $\F_{2^{2m}}$, that is, $(2^k+1)i \equiv 1 ~\textrm{or}~ 2^k~(\textrm{mod}~ 2^m+1)$, where $1 \leq k \leq m-1$ is any integer. This generalizes a recent result obtained by Gupta and Sharma who actually dealt with the case $k=2$. It turns out that most of previous constructions of the parameter $i$ are covered by our result, and it yields many new classes of permutation polynomials as well.

Abstract:Let $f=a{\tt x} +b{\tt x}^q+{\tt x}^{2q-1}\in\Bbb F_q[{\tt x}]$. We find explicit conditions on $a$ and $b$ that are necessary and sufficient for $f$ to be a permutation polynomial of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$. This result allows us to solve a related problem. Let $g_{n,q}\in\Bbb F_p[{\tt x}]$ ($n\ge 0$, $p=\text{char}\,\Bbb F_q$) be the polynomial defined by the functional equation $\sum_{c\in\Bbb F_q}({\tt x}+c)^n=g_{n,q}({\tt x}^q-{\tt x})$. We determine all $n$ of the form $n=q^\alpha-q^\beta-1$, $\alpha>\beta\ge 0$, for which $g_{n,q}$ is a permutation polynomial of $\Bbb F_{q^2}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate permutation polynomials over a finite field $\mathbb F_{q^n}$ with $q=2^m$, focusing on those in the form $\mathrm{Tr}(Ax^{q+1})+L(x)$, where $A\in\mathbb F_{q^n}^*$ and $L$ is a $2$-linear polynomial over $\mathbb F_{q^n}$. Abstract:In a recent paper Zheng et al. characterized the coefficients of $ f(x) = x + a_1x^{s_1(2m-1)+1} + a_2x^{s_2(2m-1)+1} + a_3x^{s_3(2m-1)+1} $ over $\mathbb{ F}_2^{2m}$ that lead $ f(x) $ to be a permutation of $\mathbb{ F}_2^{2m}$ for $ (s_1, s_2, s_3) = (\frac{1}{4},1, \frac{3}{4})$. They left open the question whether those conditions were also necessary. In this paper we give a positive answer to that question.
