Abstract:Starting from a general dynamic analysis of reasoning and programming, we develop two main dynamic perspectives upon logic programming. First, the standard fixed point semantics for Horn clause programs naturally supports imperative programming styles. Next, we provide axiomatizations for Prolog-type inference engines using calculi of sequents employing modified versions of standard structural rules such as monotonicity or permutation. Finally, we discuss the implications of all this for a broader enterprise of ‘abstract proof theory’.

Abstract:Where is logic heading today? There is a general feeling that the discipline is broadening its scope and agenda beyond classical foundational issues, and maybe even a concern that, like Stephen Leacock’s famous horseman, it is ‘riding off madly in all directions’. So, what is the resultant vector? There seem to be two broad answers in circulation today. One is logical pluralism, locating the new scope of logic in charting a wide variety of reasoning styles, often marked by non-classical structural rules of inference. This is the new program that I subscribed to in my work on sub-structural logics around 1990, and it is a powerful movement today. But gradually, I have changed my mind about the crux of what logic should become. I would now say that the main issue is not variety of reasoning styles and notions of consequence, but the variety of informational tasks performed by intelligent interacting agents, of which inference is only one among many, involving observation, memory, questions and answers, dialogue, or general communication. And logical systems should deal with a wide variety of these, making information-carrying events first-class citizens in their set-up. The purpose of this brief paper is to contrast and compare the two approaches, drawing freely on some insights from earlier published papers. In particular, I will argue that logical dynamics sets itself the more ambitious diagnostic goal of explaining why substructural phenomena occur, by ‘deconstructing’ them into classical logic plus an explicit account of the relevant informational events.

Abstract:What are the basic logical notions and skills that all beginning students should learn, and that might stay with them as a useful cultural travel kit for their lives, even when an overwhelming majority will not become professional logicians? The course "Logic in Action" http://www.logicinaction.org/ tries to convey the idea that logic is about reasoning but also much more: including information and action, both by individuals and in multi-agent settings, studied by semantic and syntactic tools, and still confirming to the standards of precision of an exact and mathematized discipline. Viewed in this way, modern logic sits at a crossroads of academic disciplines where interesting new developments occur every day. In this light introduction, I explain the main ideas behind the design of the course, which combines predicate logic with various modal logics, and I lightly discuss its current manifestations and dialects in Amsterdam, Beijing and the Bay Area, as well as its future as an EdX pilot course.

Abstract:Abstract A ‘logical system’ is a complex architecture for analysing one or more styles of reasoning. This paper approaches this notion by example, focussing on current ‘dynamic’ conceptions of logic, as being concerned both with declarative propositions and with cognitive procedures of update, revision, etc. The semantic model proposed for this purpose is a general dynamic logic (inspired by dynamic logic in computer science). We show how this architecture leads to (1) new perspectives on logical constants (essentially, these become invariants in an infinite hierarchy of process simulations), (2) notions of inference (which may be classified via sets of structural rules and corresponding representation theorems) as well as (3) a systematic study of switching mechanisms between static and dynamic levels, effecting a flow of information between short-term and long-term reasoning.

Abstract:We present a novel approach for teaching logic and the metatheory of logic to students who have some experience with functional programming. We define concepts in logic as a series of functional programs in the language of the proof assistant Isabelle/HOL. This allows us to make notions which are often unclear in textbooks precise, to experiment with definitions by executing them, and to prove metatheoretical theorems in full detail. We have surveyed student perceptions of our teaching approach to determine its usefulness and found that students felt that our formalizations helped them understand concepts in logic, and that they experimented with them as a learning tool. However, the approach was not enough to make students feel confident in their abilities to design and implement their own formal systems. Further studies are needed to confirm and generalize the results of our survey, but our initial results seem promising.

Defining Logical Systems via Algebraic Constraints on Proofs

Abstract:We present a comprehensive programme analysing the decomposition of proof systems for non-classical logics into proof systems for other logics, especially classical logic, using an algebra of constraints. That is, one recovers a proof system for a target logic by enriching a proof system for another, typically simpler, logic with an algebra of constraints that act as correctness conditions on the latter to capture the former; for example, one may use Boolean algebra to give constraints in a sequent calculus for classical propositional logic to produce a sequent calculus for intuitionistic propositional logic. The idea behind such forms of reduction is to obtain a tool for uniform and modular treatment of proof theory and provide a bridge between semantics logics and their proof theory. The article discusses the theoretical background of the project and provides several illustrations of its work in the field of intuitionistic and modal logics. The results include the following: a uniform treatment of modular and cut-free proof systems for a large class of propositional logics; a general criterion for a novel approach to soundness and completeness of a logic with respect to a model-theoretic semantics; and, a case study deriving a model-theoretic semantics from a proof-theoretic specification of a logic.

Abstract:This is a reflection on the author's experience in teaching logic at the graduate level in a computer science department. The main lesson is that model building and the process of modelling must be placed at the centre stage of logic teaching. Furthermore, effective use must be supported with adequate tools. Finally, logic is the methodology underlying many applications, it is hence paramount to pass on its principles, methods and concepts to computer science audiences.

Abstract:This introduction begins with a section on fundamental notions of mathematical logic, including propositional logic, predicate or first-order logic, completeness, compactness, the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem, Craig interpolation, Beth's definability theorem and Herbrand's theorem. It continues with a section on Gödel's incompleteness theorems, which includes a discussion of first-order arithmetic and primitive recursive functions. This is followed by three sections that are devoted, respectively, to proof theory (provably total recursive functions and Goodstein sequences for $\mathsf{I\Sigma}_1$), computability (fundamental notions and an analysis of Kőnig's lemma in terms of the low basis theorem) and model theory (ultraproducts, chains and the Ax-Grothendieck theorem). We conclude with some brief introductory remarks about set theory (with more details reserved for a separate lecture). The author uses these notes for a first logic course for undergraduates in mathematics, which consists of 28 lectures and 14 exercise sessions of 90 minutes each. In such a course, it may be necessary to omit some material, which is straightforward since all sections except for the first two are independent of each other.

Abstract:In this year of celebrations of ‘First-Order Logic 75’ and ‘Trends in Logic — 50 Years of Studia Logica’, two phenomena stand out. One is the rapid expansion of themes in modern logic, the other the remarkable constancy of the basic methods encapsulated in first-order logic. The resulting light piece may be read as a companion to Ryszard Wojcicki’s survey of logic in Poland. Our main purpose is to show some patterns by means of aerial photography.

Abstract:Logicians study and apply a multiplicity of various logical systems. Consequently, there is necessity to build foundations and common grounds for all these systems. This is done in metalogic. Like metamathematics studies formalized mathematical theories, metalogic studies theories in logic, or logics. The discipline of logic has been developed with the aim to model and study human thinking and reasoning. A more realistic understanding relates logic only to reasoning. Reasoning is a mental and verbal activity. Any activity is based on actions and operations organized by procedures and algorithms. That is why procedures and algorithms are basic for the development of different logics, their study and application. In this work, we study structures used in logic with the aim to reflect goals of logic as a discipline. The main structure is a logical calculus, which pivotal for the contemporary logic. Logical calculus is considered here as a two-tier construction with a logical language on the first level and the calculus itself on the second level. A system of interdependencies that exists between properties of deductive calculi and utilized by these calculi algorithms are explicated and studied. Here only syntactic parts of logics, namely, deductive logical calculi and corresponding languages are considered. Semantic and pragmatic parts are studied elsewhere.

Abstract:Contemporary semantic description of logic is based on the ontology of all possible interpretations, an insufficiently clear metaphysical concept. In this article, logic is described as the internal organization of language. Logical concepts -- logical constants, logical truths and logical consequence -- are defined using the internal syntactic and semantic structure of language. For a first-order language, it has been shown that its logical constants are connectives and a certain type of quantifiers for which the universal and existential quantifiers form a functionally complete set of quantifiers. Neither equality nor cardinal quantifiers belong to the logical constants of a first-order language.

Abstract:Combining logics has become a rapidly expanding entreprise that is inspired mainly by concerns about modularity and the wish to join together tailor made logical tools into more powerful but still manageable ones. A natural question is whether it offers anything new over and above existing standard languages.By analysing a number of applications where combined logics arise, we argue that combined logics are a potentially valuable tool in applied logic, and that endorsements of standard languages often miss the point. Using the history of quantified modal logic as our main example, we also show that the use of combined structures and logics is a recurring theme in the analysis of existing logical systems.

Abstract:Our position is that logic programming is not programming in the Horn clause sublogic of classical logic, but programming in a logic of (inductive) definitions. Thus, the similarity between prototypical Prolog programs (e.g., member, append, ...) and how inductive definitions are expressed in mathematical text, is not coincidental but essential. We argue here that this provides a natural solution to the main lingering semantic questions of Logic Programming and its extensions.

Abstract:In many situations humans have to reason with inconsistent knowledge. These inconsistencies may occur due to not fully reliable sources of information. In order to reason with inconsistent knowledge, it is not possible to view a set of premisses as absolute truths as is done in predicate logic. Viewing the set of premisses as a set of assumptions, however, it is possible to deduce useful conclusions from an inconsistent set of premisses. In this paper a logic for reasoning with inconsistent knowledge is described. This logic is a generalization of the work of N. Rescher [15]. In the logic a reliability relation is used to choose between incompatible assumptions. These choices are only made when a contradiction is derived. As long as no contradiction is derived, the knowledge is assumed to be consistent. This makes it possible to define an argumentation-based deduction process for the logic. For the logic a semantics based on the ideas of Y. Shoham [22, 23], is defined. It turns out that the semantics for the logic is a preferential semantics according to the definition S. Kraus, D. Lehmann and M. Magidor [12]. Therefore the logic is a logic of system P and possesses all the properties of an ideal non-monotonic logic.

Abstract:Abstract We address the problem of belief revision of logic programs (LPs), i.e., how to incorporate to a LP P a new LP Q . Based on the structure of SE interpretations, Delgrande et al. (2008. Proc. of the 11th International Conference on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KR'08) , 411–421; 2013b. Proc. of the 12th International Conference on Logic Programming and Nonmonotonic Reasoning (LPNMR'13) , 264–276) adapted the well-known AGM framework (Alchourrón et al. 1985. Journal of Symbolic Logic 50 , 2, 510–530) to LP revision. They identified the rational behavior of LP revision and introduced some specific operators. In this paper, a constructive characterization of all rational LP revision operators is given in terms of orderings over propositional interpretations with some further conditions specific to SE interpretations. It provides an intuitive, complete procedure for the construction of all rational LP revision operators and makes easier the comprehension of their semantic and computational properties. We give a particular consideration to LPs of very general form, i.e., the generalized logic programs (GLPs). We show that every rational GLP revision operator is derived from a propositional revision operator satisfying the original AGM postulates. Interestingly, the further conditions specific to GLP revision are independent from the propositional revision operator on which a GLP revision operator is based. Taking advantage of our characterization result, we embed the GLP revision operators into structures of Boolean lattices, that allow us to bring to light some potential weaknesses in the adapted AGM postulates. To illustrate our claim, we introduce and characterize axiomatically two specific classes of (rational) GLP revision operators which arguably have a drastic behavior. We additionally consider two more restricted forms of LPs, i.e., the disjunctive logic programs (DLPs) and the normal logic programs (NLPs) and adapt our characterization result to disjunctive logic program and normal logic program revision operators.

Abstract:This report describes the development and use of an online teaching tool giving students exercises in logical modelling, or \emph{formalisation} as it is called in the older literature. The original version of the site, `Logic for Fun', dates from 2001, though it was little used except by small groups of students at the Australian National University. It is currently in the process of being replaced by a new version, free to all Internet users, intended to be promoted widely as a useful addition to both online and traditional logic courses.
