Abstract:We give a brief review of the work of Ramanujan on cranks that is found in the Lost Notebook. Recent work by Bruce Berndt and his coauthors have brought to light many interesting results of Ramanujan on cranks, which we highlight in this article.

Abstract:In this note, we shall give a brief survey of the results that are found in Ramanujan's Lost Notebook related to cranks. Recent work by B. C. Berndt, H. H. Chan, S. H. Chan and W. -C. Liaw have shown conclusively that cranks was the last mathematical object that Ramanujan studied. We shall closely follow the work of Berndt, Chan, Chan and Liaw and give a brief description of their work.

To illustrate how useful Ramanujan's insights could be for anyone who indulges in the wild pleasure of savoring Ramanujan's genius, the reviewer takes one formula of Ramanujan from the Notebooks, analyses it carefully, and arrives at the beginnings of what could be fairly called "Quantum Number Theory."

Abstract:The crank is a partition statistic requested by Dyson in 1944 in order to combinatorially prove a Ramanujan congruence of Euler's partition function $p(n)$. In this paper, we provide connections between Dyson's crank and unimodal compositions. Somewhat unrelated, we give a combinatorial proof of a new truncated Euler pentagonal number theorem due to Xia and Zhao.

Abstract:Prof. Dr. Richard Dipper initiated the Summer School 1998 with Dr. Bernd Ackermann at the University of Stuttgart a year after Ramanujan's "lost notebook" had been published. The prime numbers needed in the representation theory of $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ motivated me to think about the notebook, too. This article summarizes these ideas.

Abstract:Moments of the partition rank and crank statistics have been studied for their connections to combinatorial objects such as Durfee symbols, as well as for their connections to harmonic Maass forms. This paper proves a conjecture due to Bringmann and Mahlburg that refined a conjecture of Garvan. Garvan's conjecture states that the moments of the crank function are always larger than the moments of the rank function, even though the moments have the same main asymptotic term. The proof uses the Hardy-Ramanujan method to provide precise asymptotic estimates for rank and crank moments and their differences.

Abstract:Let $R(z,q)$ be the two-variable generating function of Dyson's rank function. In a recent joint work with Frank Garvan, we investigated the transformation of the elements of the $p$-dissection of $R(\zeta_p,q)$, where $\zeta_p$ is a primitive $p$-th root of unity, under special congruence subgroups of $SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$, leading us to interesting symmetry observations. In this work, we derive analogous transformation results for the two-variable crank generating function $C(z,q)$ in terms of generalized eta products. We consider the action of the group $\Gamma_0(p)$ on the elements of the $p$-dissection of $C(z,q)$, leading us to new symmetries for the crank function. As an application, we give a new proof of the crank theorem predicted by Dyson in 1944 and resolved by Andrews and Garvan in 1988. Furthermore, we present identities expressing the elements of the crank dissection in terms of generalized eta products for primes $p=11,13,17$ and $19$.

Abstract:In this paper, we build on the recent results of Frank Garvan and Rishabh Sarma as well as classical results of Bruce Berndt in order to establish the 11-dissection of the deviations of the rank and crank modulo 11. Using our new dissections, we re-derive the results of Garvan, Atkin, Swinnerton-Dyer, Hussain, Ekin and Chern. By developing and exploiting positivity conditions for quotients of theta functions, we will also prove new rank–crank inequalities and make several conjectures, one of which was recently solved by Kathrin Bringmann and Badri Vishal Pandey. For other applications of our methods, in this paper, we will also prove new congruences for rank moments as well as the Andrews' smallest parts function and Eisenstein series.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss a few recent conjectures made by George Beck related to the ranks and cranks of partitions. The conjectures for the rank of a partition were proved by Andrews by using results due to Atkin and Swinnerton-Dyer on a suitable generating function, while the conjectures related to cranks were studied by Shane Chern using weighted partition moments. We revisit the conjectures on the crank of a partition by decomposing the relevant generating function and further explore connections with Apple-Lerch series and tenth order mock theta functions.

As a consequence, we give new versions of their definitions without adjusted weights. Furthermore, we investigate the combinatorial interpretation of an $M_2$-crank of partitions without repeated odd parts and explore connections of these statistics with their companion rank counterparts and the tenth order mock theta functions of Ramanujan.

Abstract:A partition statistic ` crank' gives combinatorial interpretations for Ramanujan's famous partition congruences. In this paper, we establish an asymptotic formula, Ramanujan type congruences, and q-series identities that the number of partitions with even crank $M_e(n)$ minus the number of partitions with odd crank $M_o(n)$ satisfies. For example, we show that $M_e(5n+4)-M_o(5n+4)\equiv 0 \pmod 5.$ We also determine the exact values of $M_e(n)-M_o(n)$ in case of partitions into distinct parts, which are at most two and zero for infinitely many $n$.

Congruences modulo powers of $5$ and $7$ for the crank and rank parity functions and related mock theta functions

Abstract:It is well known that Ramanujan conjectured congruences modulo powers of $5$, $7$ and and $11$ for the partition function. These were subsequently proved by Watson (1938) and Atkin (1967). In 2009 Choi, Kang, and Lovejoy proved congruences modulo powers of $5$ for the crank parity function. The generating function for the analogous rank parity function is $f(q)$, the first example of a mock theta function that Ramanujan mentioned in his last letter to Hardy. Recently we proved congruences modulo powers of $5$ for the rank parity function, and here we extend these congruences for powers of $7$. We also show how these congruences imply congruences modulo powers of $5$ and $7$ for the coefficients of the related third order mock theta function $\omega(q)$, using Atkin-Lehner involutions and transformation results of Zwegers. Finally we a prove a family of congruences modulo powers of $7$ for the crank parity function.

Abstract:We briefly review some of Ramanujan's contributions to mathematics, including his $1/\pi$ series, his work on modular forms, and his work on partitions. We briefly review his life, including his collaboration with Hardy. Finally, we give a brief summary of what any prospective mathematician should know about Ramanujan's work in number theory, including the rich relationship between his work on partitions and his work on modular forms. The title of this paper is a reference to a direct quote from Ramanujan himself: an equation means nothing to me unless it expresses a thought of God.

History and Overview

Abstract:This paper is a tribute to the genius of the legendary Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan (22 December 1887 - 26 April 1920) in the centenary year of his death. The life story of Ramanujan is so well known that it needs no elaboration not even a summarisation. In his short life period he made substantial contributions to mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions, including solutions to mathematical problems then considered unsolvable. Ramanujan independently compiled nearly 3,900 results in the form of identities and equations. Many were completely novel; his original and highly unconventional results, such as the Ramanujan prime, the Ramanujan theta function, partition formulae and mock theta functions, have opened entire new areas of work and inspired a vast amount of further research. Nearly all his claims have now been proven correct. The focus of the paper is the increasing influence of the ideas propounded by Ramanujan in the development of computing technology. We shall discuss the application of certain infinite series discovered by Ramanujan in computing the value of the mathematical constant $\pi$. We shall also consider certain special graphs known as Ramanujan graphs and the reason for designating them as such. We shall examine how certain researchers are attempting to create an abstract machine which they call Ramanujan machine which is thought of as simulating the hypothesised thought process of Ramnujan. We shall also have a brief look at the applications of Ramanujan's discoveries in signal processing.

Abstract:Using a pair of two variable series-product identities recorded by Ramanujan in the lost notebook as inspiration, we find some new identities of similar type. Each identity immediately implies an infinite family of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, some of which are well-known identities from the literature. We also use these identities to derive some general identities for integer partitions.

Abstract:In Ramanujan's Lost Notebook there is an amazing identity that furnishes infinitely many "almost counterexamples" to the cubic Fermat's Last Theorem, with no indication whatsoever how he discovered it. In 1995, Michael Hirschhorn explained, in a brilliant way, how Ramanujan may have done it, based on a certain polynomial identity for a sum of four cubes. Much earlier, Eri Jabotinsky, in an article published in 1946 (in a mathematics journal for teenagers) explained how Ramanujan may have discovered these polynomial identities needed for Hirschhorn's approach. Here we combine these two brilliant ideas (that may or may not have been how Ramanujan did it), automate it, and generalize, by developing an algorithm to solve a large class of cubic diophantine equations. Our interest in this problem was rekindled after reading Amy Alznauer's (b. Andrews) delightful children book "The Boy Who Dreamed of Infinity" (Candlewick Press), 2020, where Ramanujan's identity appears in one of the illustrations.
