Abstract:In this paper we prove existence of global in time weak solutions for a highly nonlinear PDE system arising in the context of damage phenomena in thermoviscoelastic materials. The main novelty of the present contribution with respect to the ones already present in the literature consists in the possibility of taking into account a damage-dependent thermal expansion coefficient. This term implies the presence of nonlinear couplings in the PDE system, which make the analysis more challenging.
Analysis of PDEs
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is how to prove the existence of global - time weak solutions for highly nonlinear partial differential equation systems (PDE systems) containing damage - dependent thermal expansion coefficients when considering the damage process in thermoviscoelastic materials. Specifically, the main innovation of the paper lies in being able to handle a thermal expansion coefficient that depends on the damage variable, which has been less considered in previous literature. This dependence introduces new nonlinear coupling terms, increasing the complexity of the equation system and making the analysis more challenging. The PDE system in the paper describes the evolution laws of the absolute temperature \(\theta\), the small - displacement vector \(u\), and the damage parameter \(\chi\), where \(\chi\) represents the proportion of local damage to the material, \(\chi = 1\) means the material is completely intact, and \(\chi = 0\) means the material is completely damaged. The main equations in the system include: 1. **Internal energy balance equation**: \[ c(\theta)\theta_t-\text{div}(K(\theta)\nabla\theta)+\rho(\chi)\theta\text{div}(u_t)+\theta\chi_t+\rho'(\chi)\theta\text{div}(u)\chi_t = g, \] where \(c(\theta)\) is the heat capacity, \(K(\theta)\) is the thermal conductivity, \(\rho(\chi)\) is the thermal expansion coefficient, and \(g\) is the given heat source. 2. **Momentum balance equation**: \[ u_{tt}-\text{div}(b(\chi)C\epsilon(u))-\text{div}(a(\chi)D\epsilon(u_t))+\text{div}(\rho(\chi)\theta1)=\ell, \] where \(\epsilon(u)\) is the linearized symmetric strain tensor, \(b(\chi)\) and \(a(\chi)\) respectively represent the damage - dependent elastic modulus and viscosity modulus, and \(\ell\) is the given external force. 3. **Damage evolution equation**: \[ \chi_t+\xi+\phi-\Delta_p\chi+\gamma(\chi)+b'(\chi)\frac{1}{2}C\epsilon(u):\epsilon(u)-\theta-\rho'(\chi)\theta\text{div}(u)=0, \] where \(\xi\in\partial I_{[0,\infty)}(\chi)\) and \(\phi\in\partial I_{(-\infty,0]}(\chi_t)\) are the selections of two maximal monotone operators, which are used to constrain the range and irreversibility of the damage parameter \(\chi\). The main contribution of the paper is that by introducing appropriate assumptions and techniques, such as Boccardo - Gallouët - type estimates and p - Laplacian operators, it successfully deals with these nonlinear terms and proves the existence of global - time weak solutions of this system. This provides an important theoretical basis for understanding and simulating the damage process in thermoviscoelastic materials.
