Abstract:This is the account of the workshop Exact solutions and their interpretation at the 16-th International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation held in Durban, July 15-21, 2001. Work reported in 32 oral contributions spanned a wide variety of topics, ranging from exact radiative spacetimes to cosmological solutions. Two invited review talks, on the role of exact solutions in string theory and in cosmology, are also described.

Abstract:In this technical note the rf control and detection system for a detector of small harmonic displacements based on two coupled microwave cavities (PACO) is presented. The basic idea underlying this detector is the principle of parametric power conversion between two resonant modes of the system, stimulated by the (small) harmonic modulation of one system parameter. In this experiment we change the cavity length applying an harmonic voltage to a piezo-electric crystal. The system can achieve a great sensitivity to small harmonic displacements and can be an interesting candidate for the detection of small, mechanically coupled, interactions (e.g. high frequency gravitational waves).

Abstract:The method of symmetry reduction is systematically applied to derive several classes of invariant solutions for the generalized Weierstrass system inducing constant mean curvature surfaces and to the associated two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model. A classification of subgroups with generic orbits of codimension one of the Lie point symmetry group for these systems provides a tool for introducing symmetry variables and reduces the initial systems to different nonequivalent systems of ordinary differential equations. We perform a singularity analysis for them in order to establish whether these ordinary differential equations have the Painlevé property. These ordinary differential equations can then be transformed to standard forms and next solved in terms of elementary and Jacobi elliptic functions. This results in a large number of new solutions and in some cases new interesting constant mean curvature surfaces are found. Furthermore, this symmetry analysis is extended to include conditional symmetries by subjecting the original system to certain differential constraints. In this case, several new types of nonsplitting algebraic, trigonometric, and hyperbolic multisoliton solutions have been obtained in explicit form. Some physical interpretation of these results in the areas of fluid membranes, string theory, two-dimensionl gravity, and cosmology are given.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss a general method to obtain exact cosmological solutions in modified gravity, to demonstrate the method it is employed to obtain exact cosmological solutions in $f(R,\phi)$ gravity. Here, we show that, given a particular evolution of the Universe, we could obtain different models of gravity that give that evolution, using the same construction. Further, we obtain an exact inflationary solution for Starobinsky action with a negligible cosmological constant. This analysis helps us to have a better understanding of Starobinsky inflation. With our analysis we could refine the parameter values and predictions of Starobinsky inflation. Also, we make an observation that there exist a no-go theorem for a bounce from Starobinsky action in the absence of scalar fields or a cosmological constant.

Abstract:We find a new method for looking for the static and spherically symmetric solutions in $F(R)$ theory of gravity. With this method, a number of new solutions in terms of the analytic functions are obtained. We hope this investigation may be of some help in the searching for some other solutions in $F(R)$ theory of gravity.

Abstract:More than 50 abstracts were submitted to the A4 session on "Alternatives Theories of Gravity" at the GRG18 conference. About 30 of them were scheduled as oral presentations, that we summarize below. We do not intend to give a critical review, but rather pointers to the corresponding papers. The main topics were (i) brane models both from the mathematical and the phenomenological viewpoints; (ii) Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in higher dimensions or coupled to a scalar field; (iii) modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND); (iv) scalar-tensor and f(R) theories; (v) alternative models involving Lorentz violations, noncommutative spacetimes or Chern-Simons corrections.

Abstract:We complete the program started in two companion papers of defining a Poisson bracket structure on the space of solutions of the equations of motion of first order Hamiltonian field theories. The case of General Relativity is addressed by looking at it as a particular non-Abelian gauge theory in a suitable low-energy limit and via a technique related to the coisotropic embedding theorem.

Oberwolfach Reports

Abstract:The Workshop \\emph{Komplexe algebraische Geometrie}, organized by Fabrizio Catanese (Bayreuth), Yujiro Kawamata (Tokyo), Gang Tian (Princeton), and Eckart Vieh\\-weg (Essen), drew together 50 participants. There were several young PhD students and other PostDocs in their 20's and early 30's, together with established leaders of the fields related to the thematic title of the workshop. There were 23 talks, each lasting 55 minutes or one hour, and each followed by a lively 10 minutes discussion. As usual at an Oberwolfach Meeting, the mathematical discussions continued outside the lecture room throughout the day and the night. The Conference fully fulfilled its purported aim, of setting in contact mathematicians with different specializations and non uniform background, of presenting new fashionable topics alongside with new insights on long standing classical open problems, and also cross-fertilizations with other research topics as arithmetic and physics. For the latter, cf. the talk by Bernd Siebert on the new approach to Mirror Symmetry through logarithmic geometry and toric affine Calabi Yau varieties and the one by van Straten on quantization of completely integrable Hamiltonian Systems. For the former, cf. the talks by Winkelmann on integral sets and by McQuillan on the Bloch principle. A central role was occupied by the new results around the Hodge conjecture presented by Voisin, and the new results by Hacon, M\\textsuperscript{c}Kernan et al which give an essential step towards the final solution of the Minimal Model Program, and were presented here by M\\textsuperscript{c}Kernan with a proposed approach to the Sarkisov program. There were many expositions dealing with several classical problems and classical and modern theories. It would take too long to dwell on each of the outstanding contributions presented at the Conference. For some topics there were several interrelated talks, for instance we could mention the following classical themes: \\begin{enumerate} \\item Abelian Varieties, Jacobian and Prym Varieties and their Moduli spaces (van der Geer, Farkas, Lange, Hulek) \\item Hodge Theory and Variation of Hodge structures (Voisin, M\\"oller, Barja) \\item Fibred varieties (Oguiso, Moeller) \\item Algebraic Surfaces (Mukai, Pardini) \\item Fundamental groups and algebraic fundamental groups (Esnault, Bauer, Pardini). \\end{enumerate} There were also expositions on many other beautiful topics: \\begin{enumerate} \\item Moduli spaces of sheaves on higher dimensional varieties (Lehn) \\item Deformations of special complex maifolds (Rollenske) \\item Varieties of power sums (Takagi) \\item Ball quotients (M\\"uller-Stach) \\item Stacks and Azumaya algebras (Schr\\"oer) \\item nefness and vector bundles (Peternell) \\end{enumerate} The variety of striking results and the very interesting and challenging proposals made the participation in the workshop rather strenuous but certainly highly rewarding. We hope that the quality of the expositions in these abstracts will make them quite useful to the mathematical community.

Precision cosmology with exact inhomogeneous solutions of General Relativity: the Szekeres models

Abstract:The exact Friedman solution to the field equations of General Relativity (GR) describing an homogeneous and isotropic universe together with its linear and higher-order perturbations are the theoretical roots of the current standard model of cosmology. However, despite its global successes, this standard model currently faces a number of tensions and anomalies, which occur mostly from a mismatch between early and late cosmic time region depictions. Actually, in the era of precision cosmology, the late inhomogeneities in the densities of the Universe components can no more be neglected. Moreover, since GR is fundamentally nonlinear, any linear perturbation theory is doomed to fail at reproducing precisely its features, while higher-order perturbed FLRW models cannot either claim the status of exact solution to Einstein's field equations. Fortunately, other GR solutions exist which are best suited for this purpose, e. g., exact inhomogeneous solutions able to represent a matter-cosmological constant dominated universe region. Among these, the Szekeres solution, which is devoid of any symmetry, appears as a proper tool for this purpose. Moreover, since these solutions possess the FLRW model as a homogeneous limit, they can be smoothly matched to the standard representation at the inhomogeneity-homogeneity transition. In this paper, the Szekeres solution and its main interesting properties, as well as the equations needed to use this solution in a cosmological context are presented. Then the prospects for a broader use of its abilities are sketched out. In particular, the use of neural networks is proposed to allow, in the future, the fitting of the huge amount of data becoming available to constrain the arbitrary functions and the constant parameters characterizing the Szekeres model, running for representing our late Universe with an increased precision.

Exactly Solvable and Integrable Systems

Abstract:In the first part of the paper we present the dressing method which generates multi-soliton solutions to integrable systems of nonlinear partial differential equations. We compare the approach of Neugebauer with that of Zakharov, Shabat and Mikhailov. In both cases we discuss the group reductions and reductions defined by some multilinear constraints on matrices of the linear problem. The second part of the paper describes the soliton surfaces approach. The so called Sym-Tafel formula simplifies the explicit reconstruction of the surface from the knowledge of its fundamental forms, unifies various integrable nonlinearities and enables one to apply powerful methods of the theory of solitons to geometrical problems. The Darboux-Bianchi-B\"acklund transformation (i.e., the dressing method on the level of soliton surfaces) reconstructs explicitly many classical transformations of XIX century. We present examples of interesting classes of surfaces obtained from spectral problems. In particular, we consider spectral problems in Clifford algebras associated with orthogonal coordinates. Finally, compact formulas for multi-soliton surfaces are discussed and applied for the Localized Induction Equation with axial flow.
