Abstract:Transient grating (TG) spectroscopy is an important experimental technique to measure mean free path (MFP) spectra using observations of quasiballistic heat conduction. To obtain MFP spectra, the measurements must be interpreted within the framework of the frequency-dependent Boltzmann transport equation (BTE), but previous solutions have restricted validity due to simplifying assumptions. Here, we analyze heat conduction in TG using a new analytical solution of the frequency-dependent BTE that accurately describes thermal transport from the diffusive to ballistic regimes. We demonstrate that our result enables a more accurate measurement of MFP spectra and thus will lead to an improved understanding of heat conduction in solids.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in Transient Grating (TG) spectroscopy, how to measure the Mean Free Path (MFP) spectrum of phonons during the heat conduction process more accurately. Specifically, the author solves the frequency - dependent Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE) by introducing a new analytical solution, thereby better describing different heat conduction mechanisms from diffusive to ballistic transport. ### Specific background and challenges of the problem: 1. **Quasi - ballistic heat conduction**: When a temperature gradient exists on a scale comparable to the phonon mean free path, local thermal equilibrium no longer exists and Fourier's law fails. Therefore, traditional heat conduction models cannot accurately describe this phenomenon. 2. **Measurement of MFP spectrum**: Understanding the MFP of thermal phonons is crucial for the design and optimization of thermoelectric materials, but the MFP spectra of most solid materials are still unknown. 3. **Limitations of existing methods**: Previous solutions have limited their effectiveness due to simplifying assumptions, especially when dealing with the transition region from diffusive to ballistic transport. ### Core contributions of the paper: - **New analytical solution**: The author proposes a new analytical solution that can accurately describe the heat conduction process over the entire range from diffusive to ballistic transport. - **Distinguishing two quasi - ballistic transport mechanisms**: By introducing two dimensionless parameters - the Knudsen number \( \text{Kn}_\omega = q \Lambda_\omega \) and the transient number \( \eta_\omega = \tau_\omega / \Gamma \), the author distinguishes between weak quasi - ballistic and strong quasi - ballistic transport mechanisms. - **Improved suppression function**: The author derives a new suppression function \( S(\text{Kn}_\omega, \eta_\omega) \) for more accurate measurement of the MFP spectrum. ### Conclusion: Through these improvements, the author's work will help to gain a deeper understanding of the phonon heat conduction mechanism in solids and provide more precise theoretical support for experimental measurements, especially for the research of thermoelectric materials. ### Formula summary: - **BTE equation**: \[ \frac{\partial g_\omega}{\partial t} + \mu v_\omega \frac{\partial g_\omega}{\partial x} = -\frac{g_\omega - f_0(T_0) + f_0(T)}{\tau_\omega} \] - **Modified thermal conductivity**: \[ k_{\text{mod}} = \int_0^{\omega_m} k_\omega \left[ \frac{3}{(\text{Kn}_\omega)^2} \left( 1 - \frac{\tan^{-1}(\text{Kn}_\omega)}{\text{Kn}_\omega} \right) \right] d\omega \] - **Suppression function**: \[ S(\text{Kn}_\omega, \eta_\omega) = \frac{3}{(\text{Kn}_\omega)^2} \left( 1 - \frac{\tan^{-1}(\text{Kn}_\omega)}{\text{Kn}_\omega} \right) \frac{1}{\eta_\omega + 1} \] These formulas and analyses provide a solid theoretical basis for understanding and interpreting quasi - ballistic heat conduction in transient grating spectroscopy.
