Abstract:A minimally invasive technique is proposed for detecting the differential spin conductance and spin current noise across a junction between two quantum magnets using a high-quality microwave resonator coupled to a transmission line which is impedance matched to a photon detector downstream. Photons in the microwave resonator couple inductively to the spins in the spin subsystem, and the noise in the junction spin current imprints itself into the output photons propagating along the transmission line. The technique is capable of extracting both the dc and finite frequency noise via the output photon flux and of measuring the junction spin conductance by driving the electromagnetic environment into a different temperature regime.

Abstract:Microwave excitation of magnetization dynamics in a ferromagnetic material (FM)-normal metal (NM) interface induces spin currents into the NM via spin pumping. A symmetric DC voltage is often observed due to the inverse spin Hall Effect (ISHE). Apart from DC-ISHE, spin rectification (SR) effects due to microwave excitations also produce a DC voltage response. The voltage signals are sensitive to the phase difference between the electric and magnetic fields inside a FM. In this work, we investigate the effect of the microwave signal direction on the measurement of DC voltage signals by exciting radio frequency signals along two opposite paths using a vector network analyzer. We observe two distinct DC voltages at constant magnetic fields, over a wide range of microwave frequencies and powers. At resonance fields, these two voltage states are many microvolts apart, opening up a new possibility for using SR and spin pumping for spintronic devices.

Abstract:Spin pumping is a technique widely used to generate pure spin current and characterize the spin-charge conversion in various systems. The reversing sign of the symmetric Lorentzian charge current with respect to the opposite magnetic field is generally accepted as the key criterion to identifying its pure spin current origin. However, we herein find that the rectified voltage due to the planar Hall effect can exhibit a similar spurious signal, complicating and even misleading the analysis. The distribution of microwave magnetic field and induction current has a strong influence on the magnetic field symmetry and line shape of the obtained signal. We further demonstrate a geometry where the spin-charge conversion and the rectified voltage can be readily distinguished with a straightforward symmetry analysis.

Abstract:The understanding of spin dynamics in laterally confined structures on sub-micron length scales has become a significant aspect of the development of novel magnetic storage technologies. Numerous ferromagnetic resonance measurements, optical characterization by Kerr microscopy and Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy and x-ray studies were carried out to detect the dynamics in patterned magnetic antidot lattices. Here, we investigate Oersted-field driven spin dynamics in rectangular Ni80Fe20/Pt antidot lattices with different lattice parameters by electrical means and compare them to micromagnetic simulations. When the system is driven to resonance, a dc voltage across the length of the sample is detected that changes its sign upon field reversal, which is in agreement with a rectification mechanism based on the inverse spin Hall effect. Furthermore, we show that the voltage output scales linearly with the applied microwave drive in the investigated range of powers. Our findings have direct implications on the development of engineered magnonics applications and devices.

Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect, referring to the spatial separation of photons with opposite spins due to spin-orbit interactions, has enabled potential for various spin-sensitive applications and devices. Here, using scattering-type near-field scanning optical microscopy, we observe spin-orbit interactions introduced by a subwavelength semiring antenna integrated in a plasmonic circuit. Clear evidence of unidirectional excitation of surface plasmon polaritons is obtained by direct comparison of the amplitude- and phase-resolved near-field maps of the plasmonic nanocircuit under excitation with photons of opposite spin states coupled to a plasmonic nanoantenna. We present details of the antenna design and experimental methods to investigate the spatial variation of complex electromagnetic fields in a spin-sensitive plasmonic circuit. The reported findings offer valuable insights into the generation, characterization, and application of the photonic spin Hall effect in photonic integrated circuits for future and emerging spin-selective nanophotonic systems.

Abstract:A magnonic spin current crossing a ferromagnet-metal interface is accompanied by spin current shot noise arising from the discrete quanta of spin carried by magnons. In thin films, e.g., the spin of so-called squeezed magnons have been shown to deviate from the common value $\hbar$, with corresponding changes in the spin noise. In experiments, spin currents are typically converted to charge currents via the inverse spin Hall effect. We here analyze the magnitude of the spin current shot noise in the charge channel for a typical electrically detected spin pumping experiment, and find that the voltage noise originating from the spin current shot noise is much smaller than the inevitable Johnson-Nyquist noise. Furthermore, we find that due to the local nature of the spin-charge conversion, the ratio of spin current shot noise and Johnson-Nyquist noise cannot be systematically enhanced by tuning the sample geometry, in contrast to the linear increase in dc spin pumping voltage with sample length. Instead, the ratio depends sensitively on material-specific transport properties. Our analysis thus provides guidance for the experimental detection of squeezed magnons through spin pumping shot noise.

Abstract:We use electrical detection, in combination with microwave transmission, to investigate both resonant and non-resonant magnon-photon coupling at room temperature. Spin pumping in a dynamically coupled magnon-photon system is found to be distinctly different from previous experiments. Characteristic coupling features such as modes anti-crossing, line width evolution, peculiar line shape, and resonance broadening are systematically measured and consistently analyzed by a theoretical model set on the foundation of classical electrodynamic coupling. Our experimental and theoretical approach pave the way for pursuing microwave coherent manipulation of pure spin current via the combination of spin pumping and magnon-photon coupling.

Abstract:When a spin-splitting field is introduced to a thin film superconductor, the spin currents polarized along the field couples to energy currents that can only decay via inelastic scattering. We study spin and energy injection into such a superconductor where spin-orbit impurity scattering yields inverse spin-Hall and spin-swapping currents. We show that the combined presence of a spin-splitting field, superconductivity, and inelastic scattering gives rise to a strong enhancement of the ordinary inverse spin-Hall effect, as well as unique inverse spin-Hall and spin-swapping signals orders of magnitude stronger than the ordinary inverse spin-Hall signal. These can be completely controlled by the orientation of the spin-splitting field, resulting in a long-range charge and spin accumulations detectable much further from the injector than in the normal state. Abstract:The interplay between spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom has led to the development of spintronic devices like spin-torque oscillators, spin-logic devices, and spin-transfer torque magnetic random-access memories. In this development spin pumping, the process where pure spin-currents are generated from magnetisation precession, has proved to be a powerful method for probing spin physics and magnetisation dynamics. The effect originates from direct conversion of low energy quantised spin-waves in the magnet, known as magnons, into a flow of spins from the precessing magnet to adjacent normal metal leads. The spin-pumping phenomenon represents a convenient way to electrically detect magnetisation dynamics, however, precessing magnets have been limited so far to pump pure spin currents, which require a secondary spin-charge conversion element such as heavy metals with large spin Hall angle or multi-layer layouts to be detectable. Here, we report the experimental observation of charge pumping in which a precessing ferromagnet pumps a charge current, demonstrating direct conversion of magnons into high-frequency currents via the relativistic spin-orbit interaction. The generated electric current, differently from spin currents generated by spin-pumping, can be directly detected without the need of any additional spin to charge conversion mechanism and amplitude and phase information about the relativistic current-driven magnetisation dynamics. The charge-pumping phenomenon is generic and gives a deeper understanding of the recently observed spin-orbit torques, of which it is the reciprocal effect and which currently attract interest for their potential in manipulating magnetic information. Furthermore, charge pumping provides a novel link between magnetism and electricity and may find application in sourcing alternating electric currents.

Detection of spin pumping free of rectification and thermal artefacts in molecular-based ferromagnetic insulator V[TCNE]x~2

Abstract:The molecular-based ferrimagnetic insulator V(TCNE)x has gained recent interest for efficient spin-wave excitation due to its low Gilbert damping ratio a=4E-5, and narrow ferromagnetic resonance linewidth f=1Oe. Here we report a clean spin pumping signal detected on V(TCNE)x/metal bilayer structures, free from spin rectification or thermal artifacts. On-chip coupling of microwave power is achieved via a coplanar waveguide to measure the in-plane angle-dependence of the inverse spin-Hall effect under ferromagnetic resonance conditions with respect to a constant external magnetic field. A signature of pure spin current from V(TCNE)x is observed in both platinum and permalloy metal layers, demonstrating the utility of V(TCNE)x for magnon spintronics studies in molecule/solid-state heterostructures.

Abstract:Hall effects have been employed as sensitive detectors of magnetic fields and magnetizations. In spintronics, exotic phenomena often emerge from a non-equilibrium spin polarization or magnetization, that is very difficult to measure directly. The challenge is due to the tiny total moment, which is out of reach of superconducting quantum interference devices and vibrating sample magnetometers or spectroscopic methods such as X-ray magnetic circular dichroism. The Kerr effect is sufficiently sensitive only in direct gap semiconductors, in which the Kerr angle can be resonantly enhanced. Here we demonstrate that even one excess spin in a million can be detected by a Hall effect at room temperature. The novel Hall effect is not governed by the spin Hall conductivity but by its energy derivative thereby related to the spin Nernst effect.

Abstract:We present a method to quantify the spin Hall angle (SHA) with spin pumping and microwave photoresistance measurements. With this method we separate the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) from other unwanted effects for permalloy/Pt bilayers using out-of-plane microwave excitation. Through microwave photoresistance measurements, the in-and out-of-plane precessing angles of the magnetization are determined and enabled for the exact determination of the injected pure spin current. This method is demonstrated with an almost perfect Lorentz line shape for the obtained ISHE signal and the frequency independent SHA value as predicted by theory. By varying the Pt thickness, the SHA and spin-diffusion length of Pt is quantified as 0.012 +/- 0.002 and 8.3 +/- 0.9 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Motivated by a recent experiment [S. O. Valenzuela and M. Tinkham, Nature (London) 442, 176 (2006)], the authors present a quantitative microscopic theory to investigate the inverse spin-Hall effect with spin injection into aluminum considering both intrinsic and extrinsic spin-orbit couplings using the orthogonalized-plane-wave method. Their theoretical results are in good agreement with the experimental data. It is also clear that the magnitude of the anomalous Hall resistivity is mainly due to contributions from extrinsic skew scattering.

Abstract:Quantum emitters respond to resonant illumination by radiating part of the absorbed energy. A component of this radiation field is phase coherent with the driving tone, whereas another component is incoherent and consists of spontaneously emitted photons, forming the fluorescence signal1. Atoms, molecules and colour centres are routinely detected by their fluorescence at optical frequencies, with important applications in quantum technology2,3 and microscopy4-7. By contrast, electron spins are usually detected by the phase-coherent echoes that they emit in response to microwave driving pulses8. The incoherent part of their radiation-a stream of microwave photons spontaneously emitted upon individual spin relaxation events-has not been observed so far because of the low spin radiative decay rate and of the lack of single microwave photon detectors (SMPDs). Here using superconducting quantum devices, we demonstrate the detection of a small ensemble of donor spins in silicon by their fluorescence at microwave frequencies and millikelvin temperatures. We enhance their radiative decay rate by coupling them to a high-quality-factor and small-mode-volume superconducting resonator9, and we connect the device output to a newly developed SMPD10 based on a superconducting qubit. In addition, we show that the SMPD can be used to detect spin echoes and that standard spin characterization measurements (Rabi nutation and spectroscopy) can be achieved with both echo and fluorescence detection. We discuss the potential of SMPD detection as a method for magnetic resonance spectroscopy of small numbers of spins.

Abstract:The voltage signal driven by a microwave at the nonresonant condition has been systematically studied in well-designed single-crystalline Fe and Fe/Pt bilayers. The voltage signals at the nonresonant condition in Fe and Fe/Pt show different angular dependence on the magnetization orientation. Through theoretical simulation and experiments of varying sample structures and field strength, it can be concluded that the voltage signal at the nonresonant condition consists of the thermal effects including the anomalous Nernst effect and the spin Seebeck effect, and the inverse spin Hall effect induced by spin pumping. Our results indicate that the microwave-induced signal at the nonresonant conditions may enable the device operation in the absence of any external magnetic field, which is beneficial for practical applications.

Abstract:Spin pumping is a technique widely used to generate pure spin current and characterize the spin-charge conversion efficiency of heavy metals. Upon microwave excitation, the sample may also be heated, and the parasitic thermoelectric signals could contaminate the spin pumping results. Owing to their identical angular dependences with respect to the magnetic field, it is difficult to isolate one from the other. In this paper, we present a quantitative method to separate thermoelectric contributions from spin pumping signals in both Py(Ni80Fe20)/Pt and YIG(Y3Fe5O12)/Pt bilayers through microwave photoresistance measurements. We find that the microwave absorption indeed can raise the temperature of samples, resulting a field-dependent thermoelectric hysteresis loop. However, the additional heat dissipation due to the resonant precession of the magnetization in the ferromagnet is negligibly small compared with the measured spin pumping signal. Thus, we conclude that the spin pumping signal is free of any detectable thermoelectric contributions.
Latched Detection of Zeptojoule Spin Echoes with a Kinetic Inductance Parametric Oscillator

Abstract:When strongly pumped at twice their resonant frequency, non-linear resonators develop a high-amplitude intracavity field, a phenomenon known as parametric self-oscillations. The boundary over which this instability occurs can be extremely sharp and thereby presents an opportunity for realizing a detector. Here we operate such a device based on a superconducting microwave resonator whose non-linearity is engineered from kinetic inductance. The device indicates the absorption of low-power microwave wavepackets by transitioning to a self-oscillating state. Using calibrated wavepackets we measure the detection efficiency with zeptojoule energy wavepackets. We then apply it to measurements of electron spin resonance, using an ensemble of $^{209}$Bi donors in silicon that are inductively coupled to the resonator. We achieve a latched-readout of the spin signal with an amplitude that is five hundred times greater than the underlying spin echoes.
