Abstract:We characterize different types of conflicts that may occur in complex distributed multi-agent scenarios, such as in Ambient Intelligence (AmI) environments, and we argue that these conflicts should be resolved in a suitable order and with the appropriate strategies for each individual conflict type. We call for further research with the goal of turning conflict resolution in AmI environments and similar multi-agent domains into a more coordinated and agreed upon process.

Abstract:The multi-agent system is the subject of a stream of research within distributed artificial intelligence. For achieving a solution to a certain global problem, each agent has its own local goal to be fulfilled. When working on a shared goal each agent would like its priorities to be given the most consideration. Unfortunately, many agents' priorities (arising from their own personal goals) will not be coherent with their fellow agents', thus leading to the conflict problem. This paper presents a formal and executable approach to resolve conflict in multi-agent systems by negotiation and arbitrage. We give the definition of agent, action, environment, negotiation process in formalization. Negotiation and arbitrage strategies of conflict resolution are also presented. Agents can arrive at good solutions by using the above strategies.

Abstract:Complex modern artifacts are often designed collaboratively by both human and machine agents with different areas of expertise in a multi-agent system (MAS) environment. The interaction of such agents inevitably invokes exceptions, which are not well-addressed due to their sophistication. This paper focuses on conflicts, the primary presentation of exceptions among agents, and considers mainly conflict resolution (CR) in a knowledge-based system consisting of both machine-based and human designer agents. Based on previous studies, we propose a generic taxonomy of conflicts, a preliminary integrated conflict management mechanism, and a general CR scheme. A new system architecture is also presented in the paper, with the discussion of a case study.

But the management of large-scale distributed system itself became the problem. To solve this problem, policy-driven mechanism is developed and it also acts as a core role in autonomic computing framework that announced by IBM. But many policy-driven solutions, such KAoS, Ponder and Rei, don't have enough ability of policy management, especially in the policy dynamic conflicts detection. This paper presents a policy-driven model and conflict detection method that is suitable in dynamic and static environment.

Abstract:Currently much research has been made on multi-agent system (MAS) in CSCD field, especially on exception handling, which is not yet well-addressed due to its sophistication. Conflict between and among agents is of primary in exception presentation, consequently conflict resolution (CR) still plays a central role in collaborative design system. In this paper we discuss the taxonomy of conflict, as well as an integrated conflict management mechanism focusing on conflict resolution in a knowledge-based system consisting of both machine-based and human design agents. To date, there has been little research involving conflict resolution in such a system. A general CR scheme and system architecture is also presented.

Abstract:In an emergency situation, the actors need an assistance allowing them to react swiftly and efficiently. In this prospect, we present in this paper a decision support system that aims to prepare actors in a crisis situation thanks to a decision-making support. The global architecture of this system is presented in the first part. Then we focus on a part of this system which is designed to represent the information of the current situation. This part is composed of a multiagent system that is made of factual agents. Each agent carries a semantic feature and aims to represent a partial part of a situation. The agents develop thanks to their interactions by comparing their semantic features using proximity measures and according to specific ontologies.

Abstract:Crisis management is a complex problem raised by the scientific community currently. Decision support systems are a suitable solution for such issues, they are indeed able to help emergency managers to prevent and to manage crisis in emergency situations. However, they should be enough flexible and adaptive in order to be reliable to solve complex problems that are plunged in dynamic and unpredictable environments. The approach we propose in this paper addresses this challenge. We expose here a modelling of information for an emergency environment and an architecture of a multiagent decision support system that deals with these information in order to prevent and to manage the occur of a crisis in emergency situations. We focus on the first level of the system mechanism which intends to perceive and to reflect the evolution of the current situation. The general approach and experimentations are provided here.

Abstract:This paper describes some results of research on associate systems: knowledge-based systems that flexibly and adaptively support their human users in carrying out complex, time-dependent problem-solving tasks under uncertainty. Based on principles derived from decision theory and decision analysis, a problem-solving approach is presented which can overcome many of the limitations of traditional expert-systems. This approach implements an explicit model of the human user's problem-solving capabilities as an integral element in the overall problem solving architecture. This integrated model, represented as an influence diagram, is the basis for achieving adaptive task sharing behavior between the associate system and the human user. This associate system model has been applied toward ongoing research on a Mars Rover Manager's Associate (MRMA). MRMA's role would be to manage a small fleet of robotic rovers on the Martian surface. The paper describes results for a specific scenario where MRMA examines the benefits and costs of consulting human experts on Earth to assist a Mars rover with a complex resource management decision.

Abstract:Our contribution concerns interactive decision support systems for group decision support. Through this study, we apply to implement a decisional process aiming to represent the multiplicity of actors, their diversity, their behaviors and their interactions. In this context, we contribute to the design and development of a group decision support system. The system is modeled by a multi agents system while exploiting a negotiation protocol based on mediation and concession. This protocol allows decision-makers to express their preferences using multicriteria analysis methods, mainly the method by total aggregation AHP (Hierarchical Process Analysis) and the method by partial aggregation PROMETHEE II .

Abstract:This paper aims at investigating the semantic level knowledge fusion methods in distributed resources, and solving the conflicts resolution problems between logically connected knowledge elements. A uniform representation of meta knowledge was defined; conflicts were categorized into three types according to granularity which are terminology conflict, syntax conflict and semantic conflict. Logic tree method was proposed to resolve terminology conflict; frequency fusion method was applied to resolve syntax conflict and syntax fusion method to resolve semantic conflict. Those methods were demonstrated in the knowledge of aeronautics and astronautics field to realize the knowledge fusion.

Abstract:Conflict caused by multi-agents involved in a design is one of the key problems in cooperative design, but traditional researches often focus on domanial conflict detection and resolution. This paper studies the systematic resolution mechanism of conflict occurrence, prevention, detection and resolution from the view of design flow and system architecture. Based on this, a three level model of conflict resolution and the corresponding strategies of each level are proposed in detail. Conflicts are controlled effectively both in control level and domanial level. The model and methods were implemented and verified in a motorcycle cooperative conceptual design system (MCCDS), which establishes a steady ground for intelligent design and cooperative design.

Abstract:Making decisions in a dynamic environment is complicated and indefinite because of various unpredictable factors and large volumes of information. It has become a key issue for modern organizations to have efficient systems and tools to support rational decision-making in problem-solving processes, particularly, for problems with a lack of pre-defined structure. This paper provides a novel agent-based framework for Decision Support Systems (DSS) based on the analysis of the major problems in existing DSS. The proposed multi-agent-based framework, namely the Agent-Matrices framework, provides an open, efficient and flexible architecture for DSSs. The Agent-Matrices framework overcomes the compatibility and connectivity problems in most traditional DSS applications. This framework utilises Matrices to allow agents to acquire information, self-upgrade, perform tasks, travel to other Matrices, and be reused. This paper primarily introduces the methods used for coordinating the Matrices and agents to solve a complex problem.

Abstract:A new multi - agent cooperating model has been established for conflict resolution under dynamic environment. The multi -agent cooperating learning method is proposed to enable the multi -agent system to own quickly the reinforcement learning and BDI ability. The model connects the reinforcement learning with the BDI model. The model adopts a new reinforcement function. All the methods can improve agent's learning velocity. The results of simulation experiment indicate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper investigates a dynamic confrontation problem where a swarm of agents with weak capabilities confronts multiple targets with strong capabilities. In such hostile situations, the agents typically strive to survive by cooperating to offend the targets and defend against potential attacks from the targets. To enhance the capability of such multi-agent systems, it is necessary to develop an efficient mechanism in which each agent autonomously makes decisions and cooperatively confronts targets. In this paper, a cooperation and decision-making framework is proposed for a multi-agent system confrontation, which is comprised of target allocation, tactical decision-making, and swarm motion control algorithms. First, to address the exponential growth problem of possible behavioral interactions with increasing numbers of agents, a hedonic coalition formation game algorithm is designed for the agents forming disjoint coalitions corresponding to different targets, i.e., the agents cooperating to confront the targets in the form of coalitions. Then, during the stage of attacking or defending the targets, each agent interacts with coalition members through information exchange. To implement effective cooperative behavior and explainable autonomous decision-making, a fuzzy cognitive map is designed to fuse situational information and obtain decision reference information for each agent's tactical decision-making. Moreover, to design effective attack/defense tactics and strategies for each agent, the tactical pursuit point method is utilized to develop a tactical pursuit point for each agent based on the decision reference information. Finally, a swarm motion control algorithm, including decision-oriented and swarm behavior rules, is designed to drive each agent towards the assigned target. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the designed framework and algorithms. In the confrontation, each agent adjusts its strategies according to different situations, occupies advantageous positions, and accomplishes cooperative attack/defense strategies to reduce casualties.

Abstract:Background The endeavouring to offer complex special functions from individual systems gave rise to what is known as the System of Systems (SoS). SoS co-integrating systems together while allowing for absorbing more systems in the future. SoS as an integrated system simplifies operations, reduces costs, and ensures efficiency. However, conflict may result while co-integrating systems, violating the main benefits of SoS. This paper is concerned with enhancing the time required to detect and solve such conflicts. Methods We adopted the k-means clustering technique to enhance the detection and solving of conflict resulting while co-integrating new systems into an existing SoS. Instead of dealing with SoS as a single entity, we partition it into clusters. Each cluster contains nearby systems according to pre-specified criteria. We can consider each cluster a Sub SoS (S-SoS). By doing so, the conflict that may arise while co-integrating new systems can be detected and solved in a shorter time. We propose the Smart Semantic Belief Function Clustered System of Systems (SSBFCSoS), which is an enhancement of the Ontology Belief Function System of Systems (OBFSoS). Results The proposed method proved the ability to rapidly detect and resolve conflicts. It showed the ability to accommodate more systems as well, therefore achieving the objectives of SoS. In order to test the applicability of the SSBFCSoS and compare its performance with other approaches, two datasets were employed. They are (Glest & StarCraft Brood War). With each dataset, 15 test cases were examined. We achieved, on average, 89% in solving the conflict compared to 77% for other approaches. Moreover, it showed an acceleration of up to proportionality over previous approaches for about 16% in solving conflicts as well. Besides, it reduced the frequency of the same conflicts by approximately 23% better than the other method, not only in the same cluster but even while combining different clusters.

Abstract:Intelligent transport systems, efficient electric grids, and sensor networks for data collection and analysis are some examples of the multiagent systems (MAS) that cooperate to achieve common goals. Decision making is an integral part of intelligent agents and MAS that will allow such systems to accomplish increasingly complex tasks. In this survey, we investigate state-of-the-art work within the past five years on cooperative MAS decision making models, including Markov decision processes, game theory, swarm intelligence, and graph theoretic models. We survey algorithms that result in optimal and suboptimal policies such as reinforcement learning, dynamic programming, evolutionary computing, and neural networks. We also discuss the application of these models to robotics, wireless sensor networks, cognitive radio networks, intelligent transport systems, and smart electric grids. In addition, we define key terms in the area and discuss remaining challenges that include incorporating big data advancements to decision making, developing autonomous, scalable and computationally efficient algorithms, tackling more complex tasks, and developing standardized evaluation metrics. While recent surveys have been published on this topic, we present a broader discussion of related models and applications.
