Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) porous N-doped carbon nanoflake structures decorated with in situ formed Ag nanoparticles (Ag-NCNS) have been synthesized for the first time by a feasible salt-assisted polymer blowing-up method. The 3D porous carbon materials can be an effective lithium host for the application of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) in addressing the challenging issues of the growth of lithium dendrites and the uncontrollable formation of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). The 3D hosts can effectively restrain the growth of Li dendrites by trapping metallic Li in the matrix as well as decreasing local current. Ag nanoparticles act as heterogeneous nucleation sites because of the low nucleation overpotential, and therefore, spatial control of Li metal is realized. The as-fabricated Ag-NCNS electrode presents a dendrite-free plating morphology and long-term cycling stability with the Coulombic efficiency maintained at more than 98% for 200 cycles at 0.5 mA cm(-2) with a cycling capacity of 1.0 mA h cm(-2). In symmetric cells, the Ag-NCNS/Li electrode exhibits much lower voltage hysteresis and stable cycling performance for more than 2000 h.

Abstract:Nowadays, with the rapid development of electrochemical energy storage market, the present commercial lithium ion batteries cannot meet the growing demand for energy storage devices with higher energy density. Metallic lithium is strongly regarded as the most promising anode candidate for next-generation highenergy-density batteries, due to its superior theoretical capacity and low electrochemical potential. However, there are still several determent issues to be addressed during charging and discharging, including huge volume change,lithium dendrite growth and unstable interface, which seriously hinder its practical application in secondary batteries. Three-dimensional(3D)porous matrixes are considered as ideal current collectors to realize a uniform Li nucleation and dendrite-free Li plating as well as to overcome volume expansion simultaneously. 3D current collectors possess spacial framework,large surface area,abundant pores and high mechanical properties, which enable a lower local current density,uniform electric field distribution and reduced concentration gradient for lithium anode during Li plating/stripping. Although many research papers related to 3D current collectors have been published recently, few comprehensive and systemic evaluation was revealed on the currently various 3D current collector systems. This review focuses on the research progress referring to structure design and practical application of 3D current collectors in lithium anode. Firstly,an analysis about the principle and limitation of lithium dendrite suppression by 3D current collector is provided. Secondly,we pay close attention to strategies for controllable construction, surface modification and functionality of a 3D structure and resulting improvement of Li deposition. A comparison among various 3D hosts based on different materials is summarized, in terms of advantages and shortages. Finally,perspectives of the future research based on the practical application in this field are discussed.
Porous Equipotential Body with Heterogeneous Nucleation Sites: A Novel 3D Composite Current Collector for Lithium Metal Anode

Abstract:Lithium metal is an ideal anode material for lithium battery thanks to its ultra-high specific capacity and lowest redox potential. However, uncontrollable growth of lithium dendrites hinders its application due to local aggregation of lithium ions and anisotropic growth of lithium metal driven by uneven electric field distribution. Here a strategy is proposed to address this issue via utilizing porous equipotential body decorated with heterogeneous nucleation sites as advanced three-dimensional current collector. The conductive network of carbon nanofibers is recognized as a porous equipotential body, where the interior electric filed is zero due to the well-defined electric field shielding effect. In addition, copper nanoparticles as heterogeneous nucleation sites are uniformly anchored on carbon nanofibers, which guide lithium deposition evenly. As a result, lower impedance and higher Coulombic efficiency (-97%) are achieved in modified lithium-copper cell. In particular, the cycling lifetime of modified symmetric lithium-lithium cell is expanded up to 500 cycles at extremely large current density of 50 mA cm(-2). (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Realizing Holistic Charging–Discharging for Dendrite-Free Lithium Metal Anodes Via Constructing Three-Dimensional Li+ Conductive Networks

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is a promising candidate for next-generation anode materials with high energy densities. However, Li dissolution/deposition processes are limited at the upper surface in contact with the electrolyte, which brings a locally high current density and then results in dendritic Li growth. This restraint of the local surface reaction during cycling has not been solved by commonly used modification strategies. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) Li+ conductive skeleton is activated from atomic layer deposition (ALD) coating Li3PO4 (LPO) on the surface of the Ni foam (LPNF). Then, the skeleton is efficiently constructed in the Li metal anode by the lower-temperature Li infusion. Ionic conductor LPO layers and electronic conductor Ni fibers supply charge transport channels between the electrolyte and the internal Li. The mixed conductive network realizes holistic charge transfer, which is proved by in situ scanning electron microscopy experiments. In virtue of dispersive dissolution/deposition and optimized electrochemical kinetics brought by a Li+ conductive network, the composited Li electrode presents an excellent symmetric battery cycling stability (over 1200 h) and enhanced rate performances (stable cycling even at 10.0 mA cm-2). When matching with a LiCoO2 (LCO) cathode, LCO||Li@LPNF full batteries exhibit a capacity retention of 80.8% over 250 cycles. During cycling, there was no evidence of dendrite growth and the remaining Li in the composited anode showed a smooth, compact, and well-combined condition with LPNF. Through constructing a 3D Li+ conductive network, the composited Li metal anode breaks through the limit of the local surface reaction; this work proposes a novel insight of realizing holistic charging/discharging for the dendrite-free Li metal anode.

Abstract:Metallic lithium (Li) is an outstanding anode for high-energy storage devices, but dendrite growth impedes its practical application. Herein, similar to molding process of mooncake, a facile strategy of templated etching has been developed to manufacture three dimensional (3D) current collectors with hierarchical pore structures and biomimetic surfaces derived from natural templates. By using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as duplicate templates, 3D surface morphologies of natural surfaces can be printed on Cu foil, and the resuable templates facilitate mass production. By comparison, the 3D porous current collectors largely improve Li deposition behavior and suppress dendrite growth. They exhibit excellent electrochemical performances: high Coulombic efficiency (CE), long life spans of more than 1000[Formula: see text]h and good cycling performance. The templated etching method overcomes the energy/time-consuming disadvantages of past pore-creating methods and will boost the commercialization of lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal has been an attractive candidate as a next generation anode material. Despite its popularity, stability issues of lithium in the liquid electrolyte and the formation of lithium whiskers have kept it from practical use. Three-dimensional (3D) current collectors have been proposed as an effective method to mitigate whiskers growth. Although extensive research efforts have been done, the effects of three key parameters of the 3D current collectors, namely the surface area, the tortuosity factor, and the surface chemistry, on the performance of lithium metal batteries remain elusive. Herein, we quantitatively studied the role of these three parameters by synthesizing four types of porous copper networks with different sizes of well-structured micro-channels. X-ray microscale computed tomography (micro-CT) allowed us to assess the surface area, the pore size and the tortuosity factor of the porous copper materials. A metallic Zn coating was also applied to study the influence of surface chemistry on the performance of the 3D current collectors. The effects of these parameters on the performance were studied in detail through Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Titration Gas Chromatography (TGC). Stochastic simulations further allowed us to interpret the role of the tortuosity factor in lithiation. By understanding these effects, the optimal range of the key parameters is found for the porous copper anodes and their performance is predicted. Using these parameters to inform the design of porous copper anodes for Li deposition, Coulombic efficiencies (CE) of up to 99.56% are achieved, thus paving the way for the design of effective 3D current collector systems.

Abstract:Due to the ultrahigh theoretical specific capacity (3860 mAh g‐1) and low redox potential (‐3.04 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode), Lithium (Li) metal anode (LMA) received increasing attentions. However, notorious dendrite and volume expansion during the cycling process seriously hinder the development of high energy density Li metal batteries. Constructing three‐dimensional (3D) current collectors for Li can fundamentally solve the intrinsic drawback of hostless for Li. Therefore, this review systematically introduces the design and synthesis engineering and the current development status of different 3D collectors in recent years (the current collectors are divided into two major parts: metal‐based current collectors and carbon‐based current collectors). In the end, some perspectives of the future promotion for LMA application are also presented.

Ultrathin Hierarchical Porous Cu Current Collector Fabricated by Anodic Oxidation in Complexing Agent System for Stable Anode-Free Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:3D porous Cu current collectors, as the host for Li metal deposition in Li metal batteries, shows great potential inhibiting Li dendrite growth. A method of fabricating ultrathin porous Cu with 3D hierarchical micro-nanostructures by electrochemically oxidizing of planar Cu in complexing agent electrolytes, at controlled electrolyte temperature, is introduced in this work. When applied as the anode current collector of anode-free metal batteries, the micropores inside the 3D porous Cu provide a large amount of Li accommodating space and accelerates the diffusion rate of lithium ions. The uniformly distributed 3D micro/nanopores effectively ho-mogenizes the local electric field and induce homogeneous deposition of Li, thereby inhibiting the growth of dendrites and forming stable SEI layers. The hierarchically structured micro/nanoporous Cu current collector presents low nucleation overpotential and stable Li deposition behavior at 0.5 mA cm-2. Compared with the Cu current collector, the full-cell (Cu//LiFePO4) capacity retention assembled by this structure is improved from 10.2% to 55.5% at 100 cycles with 0.2 C rate, and the Coulombic efficiency is as high as 98.3%. This work provides a feasible and scalable method to fabricate hierarchical porous Cu for dendrite-free and high-capacity retention anode-free Li metal batteries.

Abstract:Though lithium (Li) metal is an ideal anode material for next-generation rechargeable batteries, its application has been seriously limited by security and cyclability issues as the result of uncontrollable Li dendrite growth. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a method to suppress Li dendrite growth using melamine-derived 3D porous carbon foam decorated with graphite intercalation compounds of Li (GICs-Li) as a Li host. GICs-Li, with excellent lithiophilicity, ensures uniform Li deposition, while the 3D porous carbon foam, with ultrahigh porosity and enlarged surface area, provides pathway for Li+ transport, accommodates Li deposition as well as reduces practical current density. Thus, dendrite-free morphology of composite Li anode is realized without additional heterogeneous lithiophilic particles. In symmetric cell configuration, the composite Li anode performs stably for 500 cycles at 10 mAcm(-2). In full cell configuration with Li4Ti5O12 (LTO), it exhibits a large capacity retention rate (similar to 91%) after 700 cycles at 1.0C.
Built‐In Stable Lithiophilic Sites in 3D Current Collectors for Dendrite Free Li Metal Electrode

Abstract:Stable lithiophilic sites in 3D current collectors are the key to guiding the uniform Li deposition and thus suppressing the Li dendrite growth, but such sites created by the conventional surface decoration method are easy to be consumed along with cycling. In this work, carbon fiber (CF)-based 3D porous networks with built-in lithiophilic sites that are stable upon cycling are demonstrated. Such heterostructured architecture is constructed by the introduction of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8-based nanoparticles during the formation of the 3D fibrous carbonaceous network and the following annealing. The introduced Zn species are found to be re-distributed along the entire individual CF in the 3D network, and function as lithiophilic sites that favor the homogenous lithium nucleation and growth. The 3D network also presents a multi-scale porous structure that improves the space utilization of the host. The corresponding symmetric cells adopting such 3D anode demonstrate excellent cycling performance, especially at a high rate (300 cycles at 10 mA cm-2 with a capacity of 5 mA h cm-2 ). A full cell with LiFePO4 cathode shows a capacity retention of 98% after cycling at 1C for 300 cycles. This method provides an effective design strategy for 3D hosting electrodes in dendrite-free alkali metal anode applications.

Abstract:Lithium metal anodes are the most attractive for high-energy-density batteries because of their high theoretical capacity of 3860 mA h g–1. However, their practical application is hindered by many challenges such as lithium dendrite growth, volume change of anodes, unstable anode/electrolyte interphase, and so on. Here, we demonstrate a three-dimensional hierarchical porous copper (3DHP Cu) current collector derived using a highly efficient electrochemical dealloying method that can suppress lithium dendrite growth during cycling. The micropores on the surface of the porous copper facilitate the insertion/extraction of lithium ions, which accelerates fast electrochemical reaction kinetics, and the interconnected copper network within the porous copper holds the volume change during lithium plating/stripping. Moreover, the nanopores on the surface further enable a high surface area and even current distribution. Symmetric cells assembled with the 3DHP Cu exhibit stable cycling over 850 h at 1 mA cm–2 with a low voltage hysteresis of 33 mV. In addition, compared with a full cell using a planar Cu foil, a Li@3DHP Cu||LiFePO4 full cell exhibits better cycle stability that results in 110.2 mA h g–1 at 1C after 150 cycles. Our work paves the way for developing safe and longevous lithium metal anodes with a porous Cu current collector derived using a highly efficient electrochemical dealloying strategy.

Abstract:The development of lithium (Li) metal anodes Li metal batteries faces huge challenges such as uncontrolled Li dendrite growth and large volume change during Li plating/stripping, resulting in severe capacity decay and high safety hazards. A 3D porous copper (Cu) current collector as a host for Li deposition can effectively settle these problems. However, constructing a uniform and compact 3D porous Cu structure is still an enormous challenge. Herein, an electrochemical etching method for Cu-Zinc (Zn) alloy is reported to precisely engrave a 3D Cu structure with uniform, smooth, and compact porous network. Such a continuous structure endows 3D Cu excellent mechanical properties and high electrical conductivity. The uniform and smooth pores with a large internal surface area ensures well dispersed current density for homogeneous Li metal deposition and accommodation. A smooth and stable solid electrolyte interphase is formed and meanwhile Li dendrites and dead Li are effectively suppressed. The Li metal anode conceived 3D Cu current collector can stably cycle for 400 h under an Li plating/stripping capacity of 1 mA h cm(-2) and a current density of 1 mA cm(-2). The Li@3D Cu||LiFePO4 full cells present excellent cycling and rate performances. The electrochemical dealloying is a robust method to construct 3D Cu current collectors for dendrite-free Li metal anodes.
In situ constructing lithiophilic and Ion/Electron Dual-Regulated current collector for highly stable lithium metal batteries

Abstract:The uncontrollable dendrite growth is the most critical barrier that hinders the practical applications of Li metal anodes. Herein, a novel lithiophilic and mixed ion/electron conductive current collector is constructed via a facile in-situ activation process of nickel sulfide on the Nickel foam (NF). Such current collector exhibits excellent lithiophilicity, high Li+ diffusion coefficient and electron conductivity due to its unique vertical-aligned and interconnected arrays consisting of lithium sulfide and nickel on NF skeleton. Especially, the mixed ion/electron conductive arrays not only effectively regulate the ionic flux and electric field, but also provide continuous pathways for the fast transportation of both the Li+ and electron. As a result, the growth of Li dendrites is suppressed. Moreover, full cells with low Negative/positive (N/P) ratio exhibit superior cycling stability, high-capacity retention and outstanding rate performance. Typically, full cells pairing with LiFePO4 (LFP) cathodes with a N/P ratio of 6.3 show long-term cycling for over 700 and 350 cycles at high rates of 5C and 10C, delivering ultrahigh capacity retentions of over 95.7% and 86.4%, respectively. Even with an ultralow N/P ratio of 1.2 with LFP loading of 2.45 mAh cm−2, the full cell still shows excellent cycling stability for over 130 cycles. This work sheds new light on the development of dendrite-free Li metal anodes for high-performance Li metal batteries with lithiophilic and ion/electron dual-regulated current collector.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal anodes are critical components for next-generation high-energy density batteries, owing to their high theoretical specific capacity (3800 mAh.g(-1)) and low voltage (-3.040 V versus the standard hydrogen electrode). However, their applications are hindered by dendrite growth, which potentially induces inner short circuit and leads to safety issues. Employing three-dimensional (3D) current collectors is an effective strategy to suppress dendrite growth by decreasing the local current density. However, many of the reported 3D current collectors have a lithiophobic surface, which leads to non-uniform Li+ ion deposition. Thus, a complicated modification process is required to increase the lithiophilic property of the current collectors. In addition, they have a large weight or volume, which greatly lowers the energy density of the entire anode. In this work, we report a lightweight 3D carbon current collector with a lithiophilic surface by employing the direct carbonization of low-cost bacterial cellulose (BC) biomass. The current collector is composed of electrically conductive, robust, and interconnected carbon nanofiber networks, which provide sufficient void space to accommodate a large amount of Li and buffer the volume changes during Li plating and stripping. More importantly, homogeneously distributed oxygen-containing functional groups on the nanofiber surface are retained by controlling the carbonization temperature. These functional groups serve as uniform nucleation sites and help realize uniform and dendrite-free Li deposition. Notably, the areal mass density of the 3D carbon current collector was only 0.32 mg.cm(-2) and its mass ratio in the whole anode was 28.8%, with a capacity of 3 mAh.cm(-2). This 3D carbon current collector facilitates the stable working of the half cells for 150 cycles under a high current density of 3 mA.cm(-2) or a high capacity of 4 mAh.cm(-2). Symmetric cells exhibit a steady cycling life as long as 600 h under a current density of 1 mA.cm(-2) and a capacity of 1 mAh.cm(-2). Moreover, appreciable cycling performance was realized in the full cells when the anodes were paired with LiNi0.8Co0.15Al0.05 cathodes. Furthermore, the low-cost raw materials and the simple preparation method promise significant potential for the future applications of the proposed 3D current collectors.
A 3D Cu current collector with a biporous structure derived by a phase inversion tape casting method for stable Li metal anodes

Abstract:Li metal has been considered to be the optimal anode material for the next generation high-density batteries due to its very high specific capacity and lowest electrochemical potential. However, various challenges, such as dendrite growth, volume change and low coulombic efficiency, have limited the practical applications of Li metal anodes. Herein, we report a 3D porous Cu current collector with a unique biporous and bicontinuous structure fabricated via a phase inversion tape casting method. It has two types of pores: "finger-like" pores, serving as microchannels for efficient electrolyte and Li ion diffusion, and random small pores, serving as "cages" to accommodate Li deposits. Moreover, the high areal current density can be dissipated remarkably because of the large surface area, resulting in a stable solid electrolyte interphase and dendrite-free anode. The as-prepared porous Cu current collector maintains stable performance and ultra-low voltage hysteresis for over 2000 h in symmetric cells and maintains a CE of 97.6% for 200 cycles in half cells. The porous Cu@Li//LiFePO4 full cells also present excellent cycling and rate performances. In addition, the phase inversion method is very suitable for mass production, indicating great potential for practical applications of Li metal anodes.
Lithiophilic 3D Porous CuZn Current Collector for Stable Lithium Metal Batteries

Abstract:Lithium (Li) dendrites formed from nonuniform Li deposition limit potential uses of Li metal as an anode material. Here, we report a lithiophilic 3D porous CuZn current collector that mitigates dendrite formation and realizes the high stability of Li anodes. As opposed to the common metal current collector of copper (Cu), calculations and in situ experiments demonstrate that copper zinc so (CuZn) alloys found in commercially available brass are lithiophilic and promote uniform Li deposition. Facile dealloying methods are applied to provide sufficient Li deposition and volume expansion space in brass sheets. Residual CuZn alloys in the framework are found to induce uniform Li deposition and stabilize Li dendrite growth. The optimal current collector (2h-3D CuZn) runs smoothly over 220 cycles at 0.5 mA cm(-2) with improved Coulombic efficiencies at high current density. This demonstrates an economic and facile CuZn preparation method that unlocks the full potential of Li anodes and provides new Li battery stabilization approaches.

Abstract:Li metal anodes have high capacity and low potential, however, many intrinsic problems such as the growth of Li dendrites hamper the development of Li metal batteries. Herein, we proposed a scalable approach to construct a three-dimensional (3D) porous structure on commercial Cu foil through a liquid Ga-induced alloying-dealloying strategy. The porous structure with a large surface area could effectively homogenize the Li deposition, thus alleviating the growth of Li dendrites. When the 3D porous Cu is used as the current collector, the coulombic efficiency of half cells is up to 98% over 200 cycles at 0.5 mA cm(-2), and a long cycling life surpassing 700 h at 0.5 mA cm(-2) is obtained in symmetric cells. Besides, full cells with a LiFePO4 cathode exhibit good cycling stability and excellent rate capability. Our findings provide a innovative strategy to fabricate advanced current collectors and solve the problem of Li metal batteries.

Abstract:3D porous copper is anticipated to serve as an ideal current collector for lithium-metal anodes (LMAs) owing to its excellent conductivity, huge surface area, and cost-effectiveness. However, most pertinent studies center around commercial copper foams, where their notable large pore size (150-400 mu m) is identified as a primary inducement for dendrite formation and ultimate battery failure. Hence, ensuring the appropriate pore structure in 3D porous copper for achieving highly reversible lithium deposition/stripping process plays a pivotal role in stabilizing LMAs. Herein, the hydrogen bubble template method is employed to fabricate five distinct types of 3D porous copper. Among them, the one with an average surface pore diameter of 25.18 mu m and the lowest probability of macropores distribution within the pore walls demonstrates optimal electrochemical performance. To further improve the inherent lithiophobicity of copper, Cu2Se/Cu2O heterostructure nanowires are loaded as kinetic enhanced nucleation sites. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of optimized pore structure and heterostructure nanowires, the Cu2Se/Cu2O@3D Cu composite current collector exhibits excellent dendrite-free characteristics and outstanding electrochemical performance, showcasing an ultra-long symmetrical-cell lifespan of 3000 h at 1 mA cm(-2) and stability for 300 h even under 20 mA cm(-2).

Abstract:Metallic lithium (Li) is highly desirable for Li battery anodes due to its unique advantages. However, the growth of Li dendrites poses challenges for commercialization. To address this issue, researchers have proposed various three-dimensional (3D) current collectors. In this study, the selective modification of a 3D Cu foam scaffold with lithiophilic elements was explored to induce controlled Li deposition. The Cu foam was selectively modified with Ag and Sn to create uniform Cu foam (U-Cu) and gradient lithiophilic Cu foam (G-Cu) structures. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations revealed that Ag exhibited a stronger binding energy with Li compared to Sn, indicating superior Li induction capabilities. Electrochemical testing demonstrated that the half cell with the G-Cu@Ag electrode exhibited excellent cycling stability, maintaining 550 cycles with an average Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 97.35%. This performance surpassed that of both Cu foam and G-Cu@Sn. The gradient modification of the current collectors improved the utilization of the 3D scaffold and prevented Li accumulation at the top of the scaffold. Overall, the selective modification of the 3D Cu foam scaffold with lithiophilic elements, particularly Ag, offers promising prospects for mitigating Li dendrite growth and enhancing the performance of Li batteries.

Abstract:Lithium (Li) metal is the most ideal anode material for high-energy density batteries. However, the high activity of Li metal, the large volume change, and Li dendrite formation during cycling hinder its practical application. Herein, 3D porous Cu synthesized through a simple time-saving hydrogen bubble dynamic template method is used as a host for the improved performance Li metal anode. Contrary to the planar Cu foil, the synthesized 3D porous structure can reduce the local current density, suppress the mossy/dendritic Li growth, and buffer the volume change in the Li metal anode. Highly stable Coulombic efficiency is achieved at different specific current densities (0.5, 1, and 2 mA cm(-2)) with a capacity of 1.0 mAh cm(-2). Moreover, symmetrical Li|Li-3D Cu cells show more stable cyclic performance with a lower overpotential even at a high current density of 3 mA cm(-2).
