Abstract:We prove that the minimal free resolution of the secant variety of a curve is asymptotically pure. As a corollary, we show that the Betti numbers of converge to a normal distribution.

Abstract:Ein, Niu and Park showed in [ENP20] that if the degree of the line bundle L on a curve of genus g is at least 2g+2k+1 , the k -th secant variety of the curve via the embedding defined by the complete linear system of L is normal, projectively normal and arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, and they also proved some vanishing of the Betti diagrams. However, the length of the linear strand of weight k+1 of the resolution of the secant variety Σk of a curve of g≥2 is still mysterious. In this paper we calculate the complete Betti diagrams of the secant varieties of curves of genus 2 using Boij-Söderberg theory. The main idea is to find the pure diagrams that contribute to the Betti diagram of the secant variety via calculating some special positions of the Betti diagram.

Abstract:We present a new method, using asymptotic analysis, to obtain a system of recursion relations for integrals on moduli spaces of curves. By applying the asymptotic analysis on the join-cut relation of the ELSV formula, we derive the recursion relation of R. Dijkgraaf and E. and H. Verlinde, which is exactly the Virasoro constraints for topological gravity. This gives an alternative proof of Wittens Conjecture using asymptotic analysis.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to prove that one can read off the gonality sequence of a smooth projective curve from syzygies of secant varieties of the curve embedded by a line bundle of sufficiently large degree. More precisely, together with Ein-Niu-Park's theorem, our main result shows that the gonality sequence of a smooth projective curve completely determines the shape of the minimal free resolutions of secant varieties of the curve of sufficiently large degree. This is a natural generalization of the gonality conjecture on syzygies of smooth projective curves established by Ein-Lazarsfeld and Rathmann to the secant varieties.

Abstract:The goal of this note is to quantitatively study the behavior of asymptotic syzygies for certain toric surfaces, including Hirzebruch surfaces. In particular, we show that the asymptotic linear syzygies of Hirzebruch surfaces embedded by $\mathcal{O}(d,2)$ conform to Ein, Erman, and Lazarsfeld's normality heuristic. We also show that the higher degree asymptotic syzygies are not asymptotically normally distributed.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the singular locus of $\mathrm{Sec} (X^{[2]})$ coincides with $X^{[2]}$ under the Grothendieck-Plücker embedding $X^{[2]} \hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}^N$ when $X$ is embedded by a $4$-very ample line bundle. We also prove that the embedding $X^{[2]} \hookrightarrow \mathbb{P}^N$ satisfies Green's condition $(N_p)$ when the embedding of $X$ is positive enough. As an application, we describe the geometry of a resolution of singularities from the secant bundle to $\mathrm{Sec}(X^{[2]})$ when $X$ is a surface.

Severi curves of rational elliptic surfaces

Abstract:We study Severi curves parametrizing rational bisections of elliptic fibrations associated to general pencils of plane cubics. Our main results show that these Severi curves are connected and reduced, and we give an upper bound on their geometric genus using quasi-modular forms. We conjecture that these Severi curves are eventually reducible, and we formulate a precise conjecture for their degrees in $\mathbb{P}^2$, featuring a divisor sum formula for collision multiplicities of branch points.

Abstract:We show that the minimal free resolution of a general semi-stable sheaf $U$ on $\mathbb{P}^2$ contains a subcomplex that determines an extremal ray of the cone of effective divisors of its moduli space. We provide evidence that this is part of a general phenomenon in which minimal free resolutions, for distinct Betti tables, contain subcomplexes depending on wall-crossing. From this viewpoint, we provide new computations of the movable cones and Mori decompositions of some moduli spaces of sheaves using syzygies.

Invariants of the singularities of secant varieties of curves

Abstract:Consider a smooth projective curve and a given embedding into projective space via a sufficiently positive line bundle. We can form the secant variety of $k$-planes through the curve. These are singular varieties, with each secant variety being singular along the last. We study invariants of the singularities for these varieties. In the case of an arbitrary curve, we compute the intersection cohomology in terms of the cohomology of the curve. We then turn our attention to rational normal curves. In this setting, we prove that all of the secant varieties are rational homology manifolds, meaning their singular cohomology satisfies Poincaré duality. We then compute the nearby and vanishing cycles for the largest nontrivial secant variety, which is a projective hypersurface.

Syzygies of general projections of canonical and paracanonical curves

Abstract:Let $X\subset\mathbb{P}^r$ be an integral linearly normal variety and $R=k[x_0,\cdots,x_r]$ the coordinate ring of $\mathbb{P}^r$. It is known that the syzygies of $X$ contain some geometric information. In recent years the syzygies of non-projectively normal varieties or in other words, the projection $X'$ of $X$ away from a linear subspace $W\subset\mathbb{P}^r$, were taken into considerations. Assuming that the coordinate ring of the ambient space that $X'$ lives in is $S$, there are two types of vanishing properties of the Betti diagrams of the projected varieties, the so-called $N_{d,p}^S$ and $\widetilde{N}_{d,p}$. The former one have been widely discussed for general varieties, for example by S. Kwak, Y. Choi and E. Park, while the latter one was discussed by W. Lee and E. Park for curves of very large degree. In this paper I will discuss about the $\widetilde{N}_{d,p}$ properties of the projection of a generic canonical and paracanonical curve away from a generic point and in particular whether they are cut out by quadrics. Some conjectures will be claimed based on the tests on Macaulay2.

Abstract:This is a survey paper on recent work on syzygies of algebraic varieties. We discuss the gonality conjecture on weight-one syzygies of algebraic curves, syzygies of secant varieties of algebraic curves, syzygies of tangent developable surfaces and Green's conjecture on syzygies of canonical curves, and asymptotic syzygies of algebraic varieties. All results considered in this paper were proven using the geometry of symmetric products of algebraic curves.

Abstract:In this paper we study the degrees of irrationality of hypersurfaces of large degree in a complex projective variety. We show that the maps computing the degrees of irrationality of these hypersurfaces factor through rational fibrations of the ambient variety. As a consequence, we give tight bounds on the degree of irrationality of these hypersurfaces in terms of a new invariant of independent interest: the minimal fibering degree of a projective variety with respect to an effective divisor. As a corollary we show that the degree of irrationality of a complete intersection of sufficiently large and unbalanced degrees is roughly the product of the degrees. This gives a partial answer to a question of Bastianelli, De Poi, Ein, Lazarsfeld, and the third author.

Abstract:Motivated by toric geometry, we lift machinery for understanding syzygies of curves in projective space to the setting of products of projective spaces. Using this machinery, we show an analogue of an influential result of Gruson, Peskine, and Lazarsfeld that gives a bound on the regularity of a possibly singular curve given its degree and the dimension of the ambient projective space. To do so, we show new results linking the shape of multigraded resolutions of a sheaf to its regularity region.

Abstract:The Green-Lazarsfeld Secant Conjecture is a generalization of Green's Conjecture on syzygies of canonical curves to the cases of arbitrary line bundles. We establish the Green-Lazarsfeld Secant Conjecture for curves of genus g in all the divisorial case, that is, when the line bundles that fail to be (p+1)-very ample form a divisor in the Jacobian of the curve.

Asymptotic geometry at infinity of quiver varieties

Abstract:Using an approach developed by Melrose to study the geometry at infinity of the Nakajima metric on the reduced Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb{C}^2$, we show that the Nakajima metric on a quiver variety is quasi-asymptotically conical (QAC) whenever its defining parameters satisfy an appropriate genericity assumption. As such, it is of bounded geometry and of maximal volume growth. Being QAC is one of two main ingredients allowing us to use the work of Kottke and the second author to compute its reduced $L^2$-cohomology and prove the Vafa-Witten conjecture. The other is a spectral gap for the Hodge-deRham operator associated with an exact $3$-Sasakian wedge metric that we obtain using the Weitzenböck formula of Semmelmann and Weingart on quaternionic-Kähler manifolds. This yields in particular a generalization and a different proof of the vanishing theorem in cohomology originally obtained by Galicki and Salamon for closed $3$-Sasakian manifolds.

Abstract:We establish a connection between the theory of Ulrich sheaves and $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy theory. For instance, we prove that the $\mathbb{A}^1$-degree of a morphism between projective varieties, that is relatively oriented by an Ulrich sheaf, is constant on the target even when it is not $\mathbb{A}^1$-connected. Further if an embedded projective variety is the support of a symmetric Ulrich sheaf of rank one, the $\mathbb{A}^1$-degree of all its linear projections can be read off in an explicit way from the free resolution of the Ulrich sheaf. Finally, we construct an Ulrich sheaf on the secant variety of a curve and use this to define an arithmetic version of Viro's encomplexed writhe for curves in $\mathbb{P}^3$. This can be considered to be an arithmetic analogue of a link invariant.

Abstract:The present paper is a natural continuation of a previous work where we studied the second syzygy scheme of canonical curves. We find sufficient conditions ensuring that the second syzygy scheme of a genus--$g$ curve of degree at least $2g+2$ coincide with the curve. If the property $(N_2)$ is satisfied, the equality is ensured by a more general fact. If $(N_2)$ fails, then the analysis uses the known case of canonical curves.

Family Floer SYZ conjecture for $A_n$ singularity

Abstract:We resolve a mathematically precise SYZ conjecture for $A_n$ singularity by building a quantum-corrected T-duality between two singular torus fibrations related to the Kahler geometry of the $A_n$-smoothing and the Berkovich geometry of the $A_n$-resolution, respectively. Our approach involves heavy computations that embody a non-archimedean version of the partition of unity, and it confirms the strategy that patching verified local singularity models brings global SYZ conjecture solutions (like K3 surfaces) within reach. There is also remarkably explicit extra evidence concerning the collision of singular fibers and braid group actions. On one hand, we address the central challenge of matching SYZ singular loci identified by Joyce. In reality, we construct not merely an isolated SYZ mirror fibration partner, but a parameter-dependent one that always keeps the matching singular loci plus integral affine structure, even when the collision of singular fibers occurs. On the other hand, our SYZ result surprisingly displays a visible tie, regardless of the parameter choice, between the $(A_n)$-configuration of Lagrangian spheres occurred as vanishing cycles in the $A_n$-smoothing and the exceptional locus of rational $(-2)$-curves in the $A_n$-resolution. It closely aligns with the celebrated works of Khovanov, Seidel, and Thomas from around 20 years ago in a somewhat distant subject, providing geometric evidence for the family Floer functor approach explored by Abouzaid and Fukaya. Intriguingly, these discoveries use certain explicit realizations by order statistics.
