Abstract:It is urgent to develop effective materials to decontaminate wastewater owing to water scarcity in the whole world. In this study, we successfully fabricated a superhydrophobic and superoleophilic MOFs/LDHs based-functional sponge (OMCTS/ZIF-67/CuCo-LDHs@Sponge) with large specific surface area and high porosity for the first time through a two-step co-precipitation method and surface modification of polysiloxane. The polydopamine (PDA) molecules not only greatly improved the adhesion between coatings and substrate, but also enhanced growth of MOFs and LDHs structure. The in-situ growth of hexahedron ZIF-67 particles on multiple layered CuCo-LDHs sphere formed heterojunction, which significantly increased adsorption sites, specific area, and porosity and also solved the aggregation problem of powder MOFs. The CuCo-LDHs with large surface area was beneficial to ZIF-67 growth owing to same Co2+connection. The developed superhydrophobic sponge not only quickly and selectively absorbed various microplastics (MPs, as high as 500mg/mL), dyes (C0 = 40mg/L, removal rate of 99.6%), and emulsified oils from high-salinity water with high capacity (e.g. 85mg/g for PP-2000, 94mg/g for PS-100, and 93mg/g for PE-2000), but also exhibited outstanding synchronous decontamination capability for coexisting pollutants through multi-molecular synergistic mechanism and multiple adsorption forces (grasping force, strong capillarity, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonds, π-π interactions, p-π conjugation interaction. Van der Waals forces). The coated sponge showed superior mechanical durability, which still maintained separation ability above 98% after repeated adsorption of MPs for 40 cycles. The adsorption mechanism was detailly investigated through theoretical simulation of adsorption energy. This coated sponge was destined to show broad and useful applications in water purification field.

Abstract:Polyurethane dish-washing (PU-DW) sponges are functionalized sequentially with polyethylenimine (PEI) and graphene oxide (GO) to form PEI/reduced graphene oxide (RGO) PU-DW sponges. The PEI/RGO PU-DW sponge consists of PEI/RGO sheets having numerous pores, with diameters ranging from 236 to 254nm. To further enhance hydrophobicity and absorption capacity of oil, PEI/RGO PU-DW sponge is further coated with 20% phenyltrimethoxysilane (PTMOS). The PTMOS/PEI/RGO PU-DW sponge absorbs various oils within 20s, with maximum absorption capacity values of 880% and 840% for bicycle chain oil and motorcycle engine oil, respectively. The absorbed oils were released completely by squeezing or immersed in hexane. The PTMOS/PEI/RGO PU-DW sponge efficiently separates oil/water mixtures through a flowing system. Having the advantages of faster absorption rate, reusability, and low cost, the PTMOS/PEI/RGO PU-DW sponge holds great potential as a superabsorbent for efficient removal and recovery of oil spills as well as for the separation of oil/water mixtures.

Abstract:Oily wastewater causes serious pollution to the environment and has aroused widespread concern. Herein, non-toxic, environmentally friendly, multi-functional superwetting GO/g-C3N4/TiO2 (GCT) foam was prepared via hydrothermal treatment and freeze-drying methods. The as-prepared GCT foam could simultaneously separate oil–water mixtures and adsorb water-soluble organic dyes, both the separation efficiency and adsorption efficiency are higher than 98%. In addition, the GCT foam have the ability to separate various oil-in-water emulsions with separation efficiency of higher than 99%. Meanwhile, the as-prepared GCT foam was able to degrade oil pollution and showed excellent antioil-fouling capability. The as-prepared multifunctional GCT foam is expected to have broad prospects in the treatment of oily wastewater and the adsorption of water-soluble organic pollutants, which may be providing a new strategy for the oily wastewater remediation.

Abstract:Oil leakage results in serious environmental pollution and severe waste of resources, which makes the development of low-cost, environmentally friendly, high-capacity, and durable oil absorbents an urgent task. In this paper, superhydrophobic coatings of activated carbon (AC)–TiO2– were developed without using any fluorine-containing reagents. The TiO2 particles were grown on the AC surface to form AC–TiO2 powders. The hydrophilic AC–TiO2 powders were further grafted with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) molecules (AC–TiO2–PDMS) to achieve superhydrophobicity through covalent reaction between PDMS and TiO2 under UV light. The AC–TiO2–PDMS powder was mixed with a PDMS polymer to form a superhydrophobic coating solution, which made the commercial sponge obtain durable superhydrophobicity. It showed high liquid repellency and antifouling ability toward various liquids and drinks. Taking advantage of the large surface area and high absorption capacity of AC, the coated sponge showed superior high absorption capacity (up to 100–158 g/g) toward various oils and organic solvents with a high absorption speed. Besides, the sponge showed high reusability that could be repeatedly used to absorb various oils and organic solvents. Moreover, the sponge also presented photocatalytic capability, which could repeatedly photodegrade the oil contaminants without influencing the superhydrophobicity, therefore largely increasing the recyclability and lifetime of the sponge. It also could separate immiscible oil–water mixtures with high efficiency and continuously remove oils from water. It was chemically stable and mechanically durable and could resist various harsh conditions without losing its superhydrophobicity. This study developed a facile, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly method to fabricate very promising absorbents for large-scale oil and solvent cleanups and recovery.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:In recent years, graphene oxide (GO), prepared by the modified Hummers' method, and its derivatives have become a focus of research owing to their outstanding physical and chemical properties and low cost. Drawing inspiration from the mussel protein, a facile and environmentally-friendly method was employed to fabricate superhydrophobic/superoleophilic reduced graphene oxide (rGO) derivative. The preparation comprises two steps: coating GO nanosheets with polydopamine (PDA) and subsequent reaction with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol. Due to the excellent adhesive ability of PDA, the resulting fPDA modified rGO nanosheets (rGO-fPDA) were firmly immobilized onto polyurethane (PU) sponge skeleton by a simple drop-coating method. The as-prepared rGO-fPDA functionalized sponge exhibited superhydrophobic behavior with a water contact angle of 162°±2°, high organic adsorption capacity, recyclability and stable oil/water separation behavior under different acidic/alkaline conditions. Due to its facile fabrication technique and outstanding properties, the superhydrophobic-superoleophilic PU-rGO-fPDA sponge holds great promise as an oil adsorbent for cleaning up large-scale pollution of oil and organic solvents, and dehydrating crude oil.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared by using the natural graphite as raw materials via the modified Hummers’ method and ultrasonic stripping method. GO was reduced online after its anchoring on the surface of polyurethane sponges by a dip-coating method, then in situ reduced graphene oxide-based polyurethane (IRGOPU) sponges were fabricated. The characterizations of IRGOPU sponges were investigated using Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and contact angle measurement. The IRGOPU sponges had an adsorption capacity for a broad range of oils up to 21.7 ~ 55 g/g. A simulation experiment of large-scale oil spill using a simple IRGOPU sponge hollow tube component was designed. The process of continuous oil removal from water surface was quick and effective, and the oil/water separation efficiency could be up to 99.6%. The results indicated that the IRGOPU sponge hollow tube may be an optimum candidate for the oil/water separation of large-scale oil spill.

Abstract:Various oil and organic solvent spill accidents have resulted in severe environmental issues. Thus, hydrophobic sorbents have drawn much attention for oil spill cleanup. An oil/water separation material with robust mechanical properties was developed by modifying melamine sponge with silk fibroin-graphene oxide (SGMS). Here, silk fibroin was used as a molecular binder to combine graphene oxide and the melamine sponge. After modification, the surface of the sponge became hydrophobic. The SGMS exhibited excellent oil adsorption capacity (up to 76 times its own weight), efficient oil-water separation, good mechanical properties (100 cycles), and superior recyclability (50 times). Moreover, SGMS can be used in the separation of surfactant-stabilized oil/water emulsions with excellent separation efficiency and for the continuous separation of oil/water in a pumping state. These excellent properties indicate that SGMS can be industrially produced and is suitable for the adsorption of organic pollutants under realistic conditions.

Abstract:Due to the rapid development of global industrialization, the frequent occurrence of organic matter leakage and oil leakage accidents has led to increasingly serious environmental pollution. Therefore, this paper has proposed a facile and affordable method for creating oil water separation materials, and successful creating a super hydrophobic/super oleophilic functional porous polyurethane sponge modified by reduced graphene oxide and polydopamine (PDA-rGO-PU). Dopamine undergoes a self-polymerization event that creates polydopamine, which is subsequently coated on a polyurethane framework to create a sponge structure with several active sites. The surface of the modified sponge structure was coated with graphene oxide by a simple drop-coating method, and graphene oxide coated on the surface of polydopamine was reduced to create the superhydrophobic/ superoleophilic material. The PDA-rGO-PU demonstrated strong anti-adhesion properties and a high oil-water separation efficiency of 99.8 % while having high water contact angles of 155 degrees +/- 3 degrees and oil contact angles (OCA) of 0 degrees. It has a strong ability to adsorb various oils and organic solvents, the excellent photothermal effect allows PDA-rGO-PU to raise temperature by 37.9 % in the presence of light. PDA-rGO-PU has good continuous oil sorption performance after installing the pump. When under simulated lighting conditions, the sorption time of modified sponge on crude oil was shortened by 2.3 times.

Abstract:Inspired by the strong adhesion of mussels, a super-hydrophobic sponge was designed and prepared by a simple and inexpensive one-pot solution immersion method. The prepared superhydrophobic sponge can not only efficiently separate the oil–water mixture, more importantly, but also remove volatile organic compounds in the atmospheric environment. Polydopamine (PDA) enables polydivinylbenzene (PDVB) particles to be firmly and tightly attached to the melamine sponge skeleton, thereby making the hydrophilic sponge superhydrophobic and providing adsorption sites for volatile organic compounds in the air. The synergy enables the sponge/PDA/PDVB to quickly adsorb oils and organic substances, and it has high stability and capacity even after 20 cycles. In addition, superhydrophobic sponges can still perform outstanding adsorption performance even under highly acidic and alkaline environments. Meanwhile, the static adsorption capacity of the sponge/PDA/PDVB for gaseous toluene is 5.7 times that of activated carbon. Compared with pure PDVB, the super-hydrophobic sponge in the dynamic experiment has a penetration time increased from 6 to 390 min, which is 65 times longer than that of the PDVB, and the adsorption performance has been greatly improved. Therefore, our strategy may achieve a new effect, which can quickly and easily separate oil–water mixtures and remove volatile gaseous pollutants, and it can provide potential options for practical applications

Abstract:Recently, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-based porous materials have been regarded as ideal candidates in various applications. We created a PDMS composite sponge decorated with reduced graphene oxide (rGO)/carbon nanotube (CNT) fillers via polydopamine (PDA). Specifically, a manufactured PDMS sponge was prepared by a sacrificial template approach and then PDA was decorated on a network of PDMS sponges by dopamine self-polymerization. PDA tightly and firmly attached to the PDMS sponge skeleton, which makes the superhydrophobic PDMS sponge hydrophilic providing adsorption sites for rGO and CNT fillers; thus, the compatibility between fillers and the PDMS matrix was improved. The developed rGO-CNT/PDA@PDMS composite sponge exhibited excellent sensing characteristics, photothermal effect, and superwettability simultaneously. The rGO-CNT/PDA@PDMS-based sensor has a wide strain range (0–60%), high sensitivity (GF = 2.13), and stability (500 loading/unloading cycles). Additionally, rGO-CNT/PDA@PDMS exhibits excellent oil–water separation performance and high-efficiency absorption of oils. Simultaneously, the rGO-CNT/PDA@PDMS sponge was also proved to possess good photothermal conversion performance. Therefore, the environmentally friendly and multifunctional rGO-CNT/PDA@PDMS composite sponge exhibits superior potential for application in flexible intelligent wearable devices, oily wastewater, and seawater desalination.

Abstract:Abstract Water pollution is a global environmental problem that has attracted great concern, and functional carbon nanomaterials are widely used in water treatment. Here, to optimize the removal performance of both oil/organic matter and dye molecules, we fabricated porous and hydrophobic core–shell sponges by growing graphene on three-dimensional stacked copper nanowires. The interconnected pores between the one-dimensional nanocore–shells construct the porous channels within the sponge, and the multilayered graphene shells equip the sponge with a water contact angle over 120° even under acidic and alkaline environments, which enables fast and efficient cleanup of oil on or under the water. The core–shell sponge can absorb oil or organic solvents with densities 40–90 times its own, and its oil-sorption capacity is much larger than those of other porous materials like activated carbon and loofah. On the other hand, the adsorption behavior of the core–shell sponge to dyes including methyl orange (MO) and malachite green (MG), also common water pollutants, was also measured. Dynamic adsorption of MG under cyclic compression demonstrated a higher adsorption rate than that in the static state, and an acidic environment was favorable for the adsorption of MO molecules. Finally, the adsorption isotherm for MO molecules was analyzed and fitted with the Langmuir model, and the adsorption kinetics were studied in depth as well.

Abstract:To obtain efficient oil-water separation materials with responsiveness, cellulosic porous materials with switchable wettability in response to pH changes were developed by reacting cellulose acetoacetate sponges with alkylamines of varying carbon chain length via dynamic covalent enamine bonds. The resulting sponges reversibly changed between being superhydrophilic (theta(water) = 0 degrees) and highly hydrophobic (maximal theta(water) = 146 degrees) under suitable pH conditions while maintained the favorable porous structures. Notably, the functionalized sponges exhibited high and selective oil absorption capacity (40-80 g/g) and satisfying desorption ability of 80%, and could efficiently separate oil-water mixtures and emulsions with extremely high efficiency (> 99%) in a controllable manner. With the three-dimensional micro/nano porous structure, switchable wettability and intrinsic environmentally friendliness, the pH responsive cellulosic sponges developed here hold great potential in controllable oil-water separation and oily wastewater purification.

Abstract:Developing green 3D porous materials integrating multitasking environmental remediation with high efficiency and reusability is considered to be a promising sustainable approach and is urgently required. Herein, we have successfully prepared a facile, ecofriendly, and robust multifunctional composite sponge of carbon nitride (CN) nanosheets wrapping an elastomer polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) skeleton without harsh treatments. The composite sponge () exhibits excellent hydrophobic and superoleophilic properties with a water contact angle of 133.2°. This sponge also shows high selective absorption of organic solvents and oils with high recyclability after 10 absorption cycles. Furthermore, the sponge has a high ability for demulsification of the oil-in-water emulsion as well. The as-prepared sponge displays high thermal stability, retaining 82.16% of its original weight up to 550 °C, and extraordinary prolonged stability in harsh corrosive solutions over 35 h compared with the pristine PDMS sponge. Additionally, the sponge exhibits a high ability for adsorption and photodegradation of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation with self-cleaning and high reusability over 5 runs. Such a sustainable strategy would provide new ways for broad environmental applications.

Abstract:In this study, a multifunctional material for highly efficient oil/water separation and catalytic reduction has been fabricated via a facile two-step immersion method. Firstly, PVA sponge was coated with polydopamine and polyethylenepolyamine codeposition films, and then Ag nanoparticle was reduced and anchored on sponge. The as-prepared Ag@PDA/PEPA sponge exhibits superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic wettability and the Ag nanoparticles on the sponge possess catalytic performance. The composite materials can simultaneously achieve has been significantly promoting and decomposition of water-miscible contaminants as the water pass through the sponge in a short time. The separation efficiencies of various oil/water mixtures are above 99.9% in a single unit operation with high fluxes, and 4-nitrophenol can be effectively reduced while the water pass through the modified sponge. The multifunctional composite sponge allows continuous treatment of polluted oily wastewater and has broad potential in purification engineering.

The composition, morphology, thermal stability, and wettability of the modified sponge were characterized, and its oil/water separation application was investigated. Characterization results reveal that compared with the hydrophilic pure MS, the fiber surface of the prepared sponge becomes rough and demonstrates remarkable super-hydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 153.5Â°. The modified sponge can efficiently separate water-in-diesel emulsion (flux of 3665Â L Â· Â m â2 Â Â· h â1 ) and multiple stratified oil-water mixtures via the auxiliary device with a separation efficiency above 98.3%, which has no significant change after 25 cycles. The modified sponge can absorb oils or organic solvents 48â100 times higher than its weight, with a stable absorption capacity after 20 cycles. Moreover, it can be applied in handling flammable oils, showing good flame retardancy. Considering it also possesses excellent chemical stability, extreme environmental stability (resistance to high/low temperature, UV irradiation and load-bearing) and mechanical durability under harsh conditions, the modified sponge is a promising candidate in the field of oily wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Developing a reusable, low cost and biodegradable oil absorption material with high capacity remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a facile and reliable methodology to construct a hydrophobic cellulose sponge from cellulose xanthate by regenerating cellulose and surface silanization using methyl trichlorosilane. The cellulose sponge presents high porosity of up to 87.46% which could be regulated with p-Toluenesulfonyl hydrazide. The sponge exhibits excellent structure stability, which could complete recovery from 90% compression strain and high durability (60 cycles at 90% stain). With a hydrophobic surface, it presents a high absorption capacity of over 30 times its weight for oils and organic solvents, indicating promising application in oil and water separation.

Abstract:A facile strategy was reported to synthesize silica nanoparticles-coated graphene oxide (SiO2/GO) nanohybrids using alkyl-rich silicane in GO ethanol–water solution at room temperature. The evenly dispersed silica nanoparticles covered on GO sheets tightly, which was demonstrated by the decrease of (002) diffraction peak of GO and decrease of Raman intensity I(D)/I(G) with increasing amount of silicane. Further exploration focused on constructing large surface area, microporous, and hydrophobic ternary sorbent by dipping the commercial polyurethane sponge into SiO2/GO nanohybrids ethanol–water solution without damaging the intrinsic structure of polyurethane sponge and no extra processing procedure. Sorption experiments were performed to test the performance of the obtained ternary sorbent using several organic solvent or oil as the simulated environmental pollutants and the results showed a decided advantage over the previously reported sorbents. The flexible but durable structure of the ternary sorbent exhibited not only excellent sorption ability amounting to 180 times of its own weight, but excellent recyclability which can be fully utilized by only extrusion/sorption. Interestingly, the methodology paved the way for constructing low-cost, mass production of hydrophobic sorbents for facile treatment of oil spillage and chemical leakage.

Abstract:Developing an efficient and environmentally friendly strategy for oil-water separation is extremely important for practical application. In this study, a superhydrophobic and superoleophilic melamine sponge loaded with cross-linked and swellable polydivinylbenzene was successfully fabricated by a facile and effective one-step impregnation-curing method with adhesion of polydimethylsiloxane. The prepared sponge not only exhibited high oil absorption capacity, but it also enabled rapid oil collection in situ, which could be extended to practical application. Moreover, the modified superhydrophobic sponge showed excellent mechanical resistance and chemical stability. The surface morphology and chemical composition were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. This material has great development potential for large-scale oil spill clean-up and chemical spill accidents.
