Abstract:We generalize the notion of an exact category and introduce weakly exact categories. A proof of the snake lemma in this general setting is given. Some applications are given to illustrate how one can do homological algebra in a weakly exact category.

Abstract:We define notions of regularity and (Barr-)exactness for 2-categories. In fact, we define three notions of regularity and exactness, each based on one of the three canonical ways of factorising a functor in Cat: as (surjective on objects, injective on objects and fully faithful), as (bijective on objects, fully faithful), and as (bijective on objects and full, faithful). The correctness of our notions is justified using the theory of lex colimits introduced by Lack and the second author. Along the way, we develop an abstract theory of regularity and exactness relative to a kernel--quotient factorisation, extending earlier work of Street and others.

Weakly approximable triangulated categories and enhancements: a survey

Abstract:This paper surveys some recent results, concerning the intrinsicness of natural subcategories of weakly approximable triangulated subcategories. We also review the results about uniqueness of enhancements of triangulated categories, with the aim of showing the fruitful interplay. In particular, we show how this leads to a vast generalization of a result by Rickard about derived invariance for schemes and rings.

A Homological View of Categorical Algebra

Abstract:We provide a foundation for working with homological and homotopical methods in categorical algebra. This involves two mutually complementary components, namely (a) the strategic selection of suitable axiomatic frameworks, some well known and some new, and (b) the development of categorical tools for effective reasoning and computing within those frameworks. The selection of axiomatic frameworks begins `from the ground up' with z-exact categories. These are pointed categories in which every morphism has a kernel and cokernel. Then we progress all the way to abelian categories, en route meeting contexts such as Borceux--Bourn homological categories and Janelidze--Márki--Tholen semiabelian categories. We clarify the relationship between these axiomatic frameworks by direct comparison, but also by explaining how concrete examples fit into the selection. The outcome is a fine-grained set of criteria by which one can map varieties of algebras (in the sense of Universal Algebra) and topological models of algebraic theories into the various frameworks. The categorical tools for effective computation deal mostly with situations involving universal factorizations of morphisms, with exact sequences, and with the homology of chain complexes. Further, the categorical tools for computation include the `basic diagram lemmas' of homological algebra, that is the (Short) $5$-Lemma, the $(3\times 3)$-Lemma, the Snake Lemma, and applications thereof. We find that these tools are even available in some surprisingly weak categorical environments, such as the category of pointed sets. In discovering such features, we make systematic use of what we call the self-dual axis of a category.

Abelian envelopes of exact categories and highest weight categories

Abstract:We define admissible and weakly admissible subcategories in exact categories and prove that the former induce semi-orthogonal decompositions on the derived categories. We develop the theory of thin exact categories, an exact-category analogue of triangulated categories generated by exceptional collections. The right and left abelian envelopes of exact categories are introduced, an example being the category of coherent sheaves on a scheme as the right envelope of the category of vector bundles. The existence of right (left) abelian envelopes is proved for exact categories with projectively (injectively) generating subcategories with weak (co)kernels. We show that highest weight categories are precisely the right/left envelopes of thin categories. Ringel duality is interpreted as a duality between the right and left abelian envelopes of a thin exact category. The duality for thin exact categories is introduced by means of derived categories and Serre functor on them.

Weak Waldhausen categories and a localization theorem

Abstract:Waldhausen categories were introduced to extend algebraic $K$-theory beyond Quillen's exact categories. In this article, we modify Waldhausen's axioms so that it matches better with the theory of extriangulated categories, introducing a weak Waldhausen category and defining its Grothendieck group. Examples of weak Waldhausen categories include any extriangulated category, hence any exact or triangulated category, and any Waldhausen category. A key feature of this structure is that it allows for "one-sided" extriangulated localization theory, and thus enables us to extract right exact sequences of Grothendieck groups that we cannot obtain from the theory currently available. To demonstrate the utility of our Weak Waldhausen Localization Theorem, we give three applications. First, we give a new proof of the Extriangulated Localization Theorem proven by Enomoto--Saito, which is a generalization at the level of $K_0$ of Quillen's classical Localization Theorem for exact categories. Second, we give a new proof that the index with respect to an $n$-cluster tilting subcategory $\mathscr{X}$ of a triangulated category $\mathscr{C}$ induces an isomorphism between $K_0^{\mathsf{sp}}(\mathscr{X})$ and the Grothendieck group of an extriangulated substructure of $\mathscr{C}$. Last, we produce a weak Waldhausen $K_0$-generalization of a localization construction due to Sarazola that involves cotorsion pairs but allows for non-Serre localizations. We show that the right exact sequences of Grothendieck groups obtained from our Sarazola construction and the Extriangulated Localization Theorem agree under a common setup.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to initiate a development of a new non-pointed counterpart of semi-abelian categorical algebra. We are making, however, only the first step in it by giving equivalent definitions of what we call ideally exact categories, and showing that these categories admit a description of quotient objects by means of intrinsically defined ideals, in spite of being non-pointed. As a tool we involve a new notion of essentially nullary monad, and show that Bourn protomodularity condition makes cartesian monads essentially nullary. All semi-abelian categories, all non-trivial Bourn protomodular varieties of universal algebras, and all cotoposes are ideally exact.

$ω$-weak equivalences between weak $ω$-categories

Abstract:We study $\omega$-weak equivalences between weak $\omega$-categories in the sense of Batanin-Leinster. Our $\omega$-weak equivalences are strict $\omega$-functors satisfying essential surjectivity at every dimension, and when restricted to those between strict $\omega$-categories, they coincide with the weak equivalences in the model category of strict $\omega$-categories defined by Lafont, Métayer, and Worytkiewicz. We show that the class of $\omega$-weak equivalences has the 2-out-of-3 property. We also consider a generalisation of $\omega$-weak equivalences, defined as weak $\omega$-functors (in the sense of Garner) satisfying essential surjectivity, and show that this class also has the 2-out-of-3 property.

A syntactic characterization of weakly Mal'tsev varieties

Abstract:The notion of a weakly Mal'tsev category, as it was introduced in 2008 by the third author, is a generalization of the classical notion of a Mal'tsev category. It is well-known that a variety of universal algebras is a Mal'tsev category if and only if its theory admits a Mal'tsev term. In the main theorem of this paper, we prove a syntactic characterization of the varieties that are weakly Mal'tsev categories. We apply our result to the variety of distributive lattices which was known to be a weakly Mal'tsev category before. By a result of Z. Janelidze and the third author, a finitely complete category is weakly Mal'tsev if and only if any internal strong reflexive relation is an equivalence relation. In the last part of this paper, we give a syntactic characterization of those varieties in which any regular reflexive relation is an equivalence relation.

Abstract:We verify that Kelly's constructions of the internal Hom for enriched categories extends naturally to lax functors taking their values in a symmetric monoidal category. Our motivation is to set up a `calculus on lax functors' that will host the theory of weakly enriched categories that are defined by lax diagrams.

Abstract:In this paper we study the strict refinement property for connected partial ordersalso known as Hashimoto's Theorem. This property implies that any isomorphismbetween products of irreducible structures is determined is uniquely determinedas a product of isomorphisms between the factors. This refinement implies asort of smallest possible decomposition for such structures. After a brief recallof the necessary notion we prove that Hashimoto's theorem can be extendedto connected loop-free categories, i.e. categories with no non-trivial morphismsendomorphisms. A special case of such categories is the category of connectedcomponents, for concurrent programs without loops.

Di-Exact Categories and Lattices of Normal Subobjects

Abstract:The aim of this article is to study certain categorical-algebraic frameworks for basic homological algebra, introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2404.15896" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2404.15896">arXiv:2404.15896</a>, with the aim of better understanding the differences between them. We focus on homological self-duality, preservation of normal maps by dinversion and diexactness, finding counterexamples that separate any two of these conditions. On the way, we encounter new examples and new characterizations, such as the Second Isomorphism Property. We also consider homological self-duality in the context of regular categories. Our main technique is to investigate the lattice of normal subobjects of an object in any pointed category with kernels and cokernels. The category of monoidal semilattices is a context where we have easy control of these lattices. We show that properties of the homological frameworks under consideration may be expressed by means of lattice-theoretical properties, such as modularity and distributivity.

Abstract:We prove basic statements about the Hermitian K-theory of exact form categories with weak equivalences. Notably, we extend a quadratic functor with values in abelian groups from an exact category to its category of bounded chain complexes in a way that does not change Grothendieck-Witt spaces. This is used in joint work with Marlowe for the comparison of the classical 1-categorical version of the Hermitian K-theory of exact categories with the infinity-categorical version of Calmes-Dotto-Harpaz-Hebestreit-Land-Moi-Nardin-Nikolaus-Steimle.

The passage among the subcategories of weakly approximable triangulated categories

Abstract:In this article we prove that all the inclusions between the 'classical' and naturally defined full triangulated subcategories of a weakly approximable triangulated category are intrinsic (in one case under a technical condition). This extends all the existing results about subcategories of weakly approximable triangulated categories. Together with a forthcoming paper about uniqueness of enhancements, our result allows us to generalize a celebrated theorem by Rickard which asserts that if $R$ and $S$ are left coherent rings, then a derived equivalence of $R$ and $S$ is "independent of the decorations". That is, if $D^?(R\text{-}\square)$ and $D^?(S\text{-}\square)$ are equivalent as triangulated categories for some choice of decorations $?$ and $\square$, then they are equivalent for every choice of decorations. But our theorem is much more general, and applies also to quasi-compact and quasi-separated schemes -- even to the relative version, in which the derived categories consist of complexes with cohomology supported on a given closed subscheme with quasi-compact complement.

Abstract:In this work, we prove a generalization of Quillen's Theorem A to 2-categories equipped with a special set of morphisms which we think of as weak equivalences, providing sufficient conditions for a 2-functor to induce an equivalence on $(\infty,1)$-localizations. When restricted to 1-categories with all morphisms marked, our theorem retrieves the classical Theorem A of Quillen. We additionally state and provide evidence for a new conjecture: the cofinality conjecture, which describes the relation between a conjectural theory of marked $(\infty,2)$-colimits and our generalization of Theorem A.

Abstract:We show that non-pointed versions of the classical homological lemmas hold in regular protomodular categories equipped with a suitable posetal monocoreflective subcategory. Examples of such categories are all protomodular varieties of universal algebras having more than one constant, like the ones of unitary rings, Boolean algebras, Heyting algebras and MV-algebras, their topological models, and the dual category of every elementary topos.

Abstract:The theory of abelian categories proved very useful, providing an axiomatic framework for homology and cohomology of modules over a ring and, in particular, of abelian groups. For many years, a similar categorical framework has been lacking for non-abelian (co)homology, the subject of which includes the categories of non-abelian groups, of rings, Lie algebras, etc. The notion of semi-abelian category due to Janelidze, Marki and Tholen allows a unified study of many important homological properties of such categories. For instance, in any semi-abelian category, the classical diagram lemmas (the Short Five Lemma, the 3x3 Lemma, the Snake Lemma, Noether's Isomorphism Theorems) hold. The point of this thesis is, that the semi-abelian framework is indeed perfectly suited for the study of non-abelian (co)homology and the corresponding homotopy theory. It describes the foundations for a categorical homology theory that unifies many basic aspects of the classical (co)homology theories of e.g., groups, Lie algebras and crossed modules. Starting from homology of (proper) chain complexes and of simplicial objects, a semi-abelian version of Barr-Beck cotriple homology is introduced. A systematic study of the theory of Baer invariants in this context yields categorical versions of Hopf's formula (describing the second homology object in terms of commutators) and the Stallings-Stammbach sequence. We obtain a Universal Coefficient Theorem, a version of the Hochschild-Serre sequence, and an interpretation of the second cohomology group in terms of isomorphism classes of central extensions. Also, Quillen model category structures for homotopy of simplicial objects and internal categories are studied, and are shown to be compatible with the respective semi-abelian notions of homology.

The weak categorical quiver minor theorem and its applications: matchings, multipaths, and magnitude cohomology

Abstract:Building upon previous works of Proudfoot and Ramos, and using the categorical framework of Sam and Snowden, we extend the weak categorical minor theorem from undirected graphs to quivers. As case of study, we investigate the consequences on the homology of multipath complexes; eg. on its torsion. Further, we prove a comparison result: we show that, when restricted to directed graphs without oriented cycles, multipath complexes and matching complexes yield functors which commute up to a blow-up operation on directed graphs. We use this fact to compute the homotopy type of matching complexes for a certain class of bipartite graphs also known as half-graphs or ladders. We complement the work with a study of the (representation) category of cones, and with analysing related consequences on magnitude cohomology of quivers.

Weak exactness and amalgamated free product of von Neumann algebras

Abstract:We show that the amalgamated free product of weakly exact von Neumann algebras is weakly exact. This is done by using a universal property of Toeplitz-Pimsner algebras and a locally convex topology on bimodules of von Neumann algebras, which is used to characterize weakly exact von Neumann algebras.

Homology and cohomology of cubical sets with coefficients in systems of objects

Abstract:This paper continues the research of the author on the homology of cubical and semi-cubical sets with coefficients in systems of objects. The main result is the theorem that the homology of cubical sets with coefficients in contravariant systems in an Abelian category with exact coproducts is isomorphic to the left satellites of a colimit functor. This made it possible to prove a number of the following new assertions, presented in the paper, about the homology and cohomology of cubical sets with coefficients in systems of objects. These homology are invariant under morphism between cubical sets when passing to the direct image of the system of coefficients. There is a criterion for the invariance of these homologies when passing to the inverse image. These homology generalize the singular cubical homology with local coefficients and the homology of semi-cubical sets with coefficients in contravariant systems. There is a spectral sequence for colimit homologies of cubical sets with coefficients in contravariant systems. The weak equivalence of cubical sets induces an isomorphism of homology with local systems. For a morphism of cubical sets whose inverse fiber morphisms are weak equivalences, there exists a spectral sequence for homology with local systems converging to the homology of the domain of this morphism. The homology of small category with coefficients in a diagram can be calculated as cubical homology. The Baues-Wirsching cohomologies with coefficients in natural systems are isomorphic to cubical cohomologies with coefficients in covariant systems.
