Abstract:Recent experiments and simulations have shown that pulsed lasers can be used to push neutral Rydberg atoms forward or pull them back toward a light source. Referring to an earlier experiment [U. Eichmann et al., Nature 461, 1261 - (2009)], we simulate both pushing and pulling effects on H-1 and C-12 in tightly focused laser fields with a high-order corrected optical description. Scaling laws of excited He-4 acceleration by laser pulses are investigated via numerical simulations, which show that Rydberg atoms can be pushed or pulled to high speeds even up to hundreds of kilometers per second by tightly focused laser pulses. Moreover, we use the ponderomotive model and computer simulation to further analyze the validity of two formulas of the maximum radial and longitudinal velocity of outgoing accelerated Rydberg atoms. These studies have practical guiding significance to laser-based acceleration of neutral particle experiments in laboratories.
Direct Acceleration of Electrons by A Circular Polarized Laser Pulse with Phase Modulation

Abstract:Electron acceleration by transversely echelon phase-modulated (EPM) circularly polarized (CP) intense laser pulse is investigated. Solution of the relativistic electron equations of motion shows that the CP EPM light wave structure can disrupt the harmonic response of a trapped electron not only in the transverse direction but also in the direction of laser propagation. In each laser cycle, there can be a net gain in the electron's transverse momentum, which is promptly converted into the forward direction by the Lorentz force. As a result, the electron can be trapped and accelerated in the favorable phase of the laser for a rather long time. Its momentum gain then accumulates and can eventually reach high levels. It is also found that with the CP EPM laser, the net acceleration of the electron is not sensitive to its initial position and velocity relative to the phase of the laser fields, so that such a laser can also be useful for accelerating thermal electron bunches to high energies.

Abstract:Accelerating neutral atoms is challenging because such particles are not directly manipulated by electric and magnetic fields as charged particles. In our acceleration scheme, the excited atom requires a sufficiently high gradient acceleration force. The key challenge in laser acceleration experiments is that not only must the photon energy excite atoms to the Rydberg state, but also atoms must not be ionized in an intense laser field. In this Letter, we propose using a chirped laser pulse to achieve the objectives above. The enhancement effect of the pulse chirp on the laser acceleration of neutral particles is investigated via numerical simulation and analytical analysis.

Abstract:The possibility of enhancing the energy gain in vacuum electron acceleration by Airy beams is examined. The characteristics of transverse acceleration and non-diffraction of Airy beam can lead to the formation of a long "asymmetric field channel" along the propagation axis, where the intense asymmetric field can accelerate the injected electron to higher energy. Meanwhile, the injection energy of electron plays an important role in determining the final energy gain.

Abstract:Optically trapped Rydberg atoms are a suitable platform to explore quantum many-body physics mediated by long-range atom--atom interactions that can be engineered through externally applied light fields. However, this approach is limited to dipole-allowed transitions and a spatial resolution of the order of the optical wavelength. Here, we theoretically investigate the interaction between free electrons and individual Rydberg atoms as an approach to induce nondipolar transitions with subnanometer spatial precision and a substantial degree of control over the final atomic states. We observe unity-order excitation probabilities produced by a single electron for suitably chosen combinations of electron energies and electron-beam distance to the atom. We further discuss electron--atom entanglement in combination with lateral shaping of the electron followed by postselection. Our results support free electrons as powerful tools to manipulate Rydberg atoms in previously inaccessible ways.

Abstract:Divalent atoms provide excellent means for advancing control in Rydberg atom-based quantum simulation and computing due to the second optically active valence electron available. Particularly promising in this context are circular Rydberg atoms, for which long-lived ionic core excitations can be exploited without suffering from detrimental autoionization. Here, we report the implementation of electric quadrupole coupling between the metastable 4D3/2 level and a very high- n ( n=79 ) circular Rydberg qubit, realized in doubly excited Sr88 atoms prepared from an optical tweezer array. We measure the kHz-scale differential level shift on the circular Rydberg qubit via beat-node Ramsey interferometry comprising spin echo. Observing this coupling requires coherent interrogation of the Rydberg states for more than 100 μs , which is assisted by tweezer trapping and circular state lifetime enhancement in a black-body radiation suppressing capacitor. Further, we find no noticeable loss of qubit coherence under continuous photon scattering on the ion core, paving the way for laser cooling and imaging of Rydberg atoms. Our results demonstrate access to weak electron-electron interactions in Rydberg atoms and expand the quantum simulation toolbox for optical control of highly excited circular state qubits via ionic core manipulation. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.133.123403 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We propose a ponderomotive trapping mechanism for circular Rydberg atoms that consists in threading the Rydberg orbital with a tightly focused Gaussian laser beam. The trap exhibits remarkable properties: it can be made effectively linear, extremely nonlinear, or have the same trapping frequency, depth, or nonlinearity for distant Rydberg states. The mechanism is capable of trapping efficiently highly excited Rydberg states with a single active electron, as well as ground state atoms using a single beam. Alternatively, the Rydberg atom can be trapped efficiently by the same beam used to excite it, relaxing optical constraints in well-shielded environments.

Measuring the Rydberg Constant Using Circular Rydberg Atoms in an Intensity-Modulated Optical Lattice

Abstract:A method for performing a precision measurement of the Rydberg constant, $R_{\infty}$, using cold circular Rydberg atoms is proposed. These states have long lifetimes, as well as negligible quantum-electrodynamics (QED) and no nuclear-overlap corrections. Due to these advantages, the measurement can help solve the "proton radius puzzle" [Bernauer, Pohl, Sci. Am. 310, 32 (2014)]. The atoms are trapped using a Rydberg-atom optical lattice, and transitions are driven using a recently-demonstrated lattice-modulation technique to perform Doppler-free spectroscopy. The circular-state transition frequency yields $R_{\infty}$. Laser wavelengths and beam geometries are selected such that the lattice-induced transition shift is minimized. The selected transitions have no first-order Zeeman and Stark corrections, leaving only manageable second-order Zeeman and Stark shifts. For Rb, the projected relative uncertainty of $R_{\infty}$ in a measurement under the presence of the Earth's gravity is $10^{-11}$, with the main contribution coming from the residual lattice shift. This could be reduced in a future micro-gravity implementation. The next-important systematic arises from the Rb$^+$ polarizability (relative-uncertainty contribution of $\approx 3 \times10^{-12}$).

Abstract:Neutral atoms have been observed to survive intense laser pulses in high Rydberg states with surprisingly large probability. Only with this Rydberg-state excitation (RSE) included is the picture of intense-laser-atom interaction complete. Various mechanisms have been proposed to explain the underlying physics. However, neither one can explain all the features observed in experiments and in time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) simulations. Here we propose a fully quantum-mechanical model based on the strong-field approximation (SFA). It well reproduces the intensity dependence of RSE obtained by the TDSE, which exhibits a series of modulated peaks. They are due to recapture of the liberated electron and the fact that the pertinent probability strongly depends on the position and the parity of the Rydberg state. We also present measurements of RSE in xenon at 800 nm, which display the peak structure consistent with the calculations.
Slowing Down a Coherent Superposition of Circular Rydberg States of Strontium

Abstract:Rydberg alkaline earth atoms are promising tools for quantum simulation and metrology. When one of the two valence electrons is promoted to long-lived circular states, the second valence electron can be optically manipulated without significant autoionization. We harness this feature to demonstrate laser slowing of a thermal atomic beam of circular strontium atoms. By driving the main ion core 422 nm wavelength resonance, we observe a velocity reduction of 50 m/s without significant autoionization. We also show that a superposition of circular states undergoes very weak decoherence during the cooling process, up to the scattering of more than thousand photons. This robustness opens new perspectives for quantum simulations over long timescales with circular atoms, while simultaneously cooling their motional state. It makes it possible to mitigate the harmful effects of unavoidable heating due to spin-motion coupling during a quantum simulation.

Abstract:We propose to sympathetically slow and cool polar molecules in a cold, low-density beam using laser-cooled Rydberg atoms. The elastic collision cross sections between molecules and Rydberg atoms are large enough to efficiently thermalize the molecules even in a low-density environment. Molecules traveling at 100 m/s can be stopped in under 30 collisions with little inelastic loss. Our method does not require photon scattering from the molecules and can be generically applied to complex species for applications in precision measurement, quantum information science, and controlled chemistry. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.033001 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We perform a theoretical investigation on the control over the atomic excitation of Rydberg states with shaped intense ultrashort laser pulses. By numerically solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE), we systematically study the dependence of the population of the Rydberg states on the pi phase step position in the frequency spectra of the laser pulse for different intensities, central wavelengths and pulse durations. Our results show that the Rydberg excitation process can be effectively modulated using shaped intense laser pulses with the laser intensity as high as 1 x 10(14 )W/cm(2). Our work also have benefit to the future investigation to find out the dominant mechanism behind the excitation of Rydberg states in strong laser fields.
Electron Acceleration Using Twisted Laser Wavefronts

Abstract:Using plasma mirror injection we demonstrate, both analytically and numerically, that a circularly polarized helical laser pulse can accelerate highly collimated dense bunches of electrons to several hundred MeV using currently available laser systems. The circular-polarized helical (Laguerre-Gaussian) beam has a unique field structure where the transverse fields have helix-like wave-fronts which tend to zero on-axis where, at focus, there are large on-axis longitudinal magnetic and electric fields. The acceleration of electrons by this type of laser pulse is analysed as a function of radial mode number and it is shown that the radial mode number has a profound effect on electron acceleration close to the laser <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://axis.Using" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations a circular-polarized helical laser beam with power of 0.6 PW is shown to produce several dense attosecond bunches. The bunch nearest the peak of the laser envelope has an energy of 0.47 GeV with spread as narrow as 10\%, a charge of 26 pC with duration of $\sim 400$ as, and a very low divergence of 20 mrad}. The confinement by longitudinal magnetic fields in the near-axis region allows the longitudinal electric fields to accelerate the electrons over a long period after the initial reflection. Both the longitudinal E and B fields are shown to be essential for electron acceleration in this scheme. This opens up new paths towards attosecond electron beams, or attosecond radiation, at many laser facilities around the world.

High-order harmonic generation from Rydberg atoms by using three-color laser pulse

Abstract:The high-order harmonic generation is theoretically studied when Rydberg state hydrogen atoms are interated with a linearly polarized three-color laser field along the z -axis. It is found that high-order harmonics show a super-continuum structure as well as extensive intensity enhancement. By time–frequency analyses, it is revealed that a large group of electronic density focused from the area outside the z -axis to the nucleus. This extraordinary behavior of Rydberg electron which is quite different from the previous study gives rise to the remarkable enhancement of the super-continuum. Further theoretical research based on semi-classical and quantum-mechanical technique displays the electronic focus effect caused by the combined action of the initial Rydberg orbital velocity and nuclear attraction of the core. This mechanism can apparently enhance the high-order harmonics, leading to remarkable attosecond pulse.

Abstract:A high-efficiency laser coherent combination method based on the virtue of the self-transverse acceleration effect of Airy beams is proposed and demonstrated by converting an array of Gaussian beams into Airy beams array to reduce laser beams separation distance. The coherent combination procedures of circular array for both Airy and Gaussian beams are theoretically and experimentally studied. The results show that the central intensity of the laser coherent combination of the circular array of Airy beams is 14.33 times higher than that of the Gaussian beams array, and the combined efficiency of the circular array of Airy beams is 1.64 times higher than that of the Gaussian beams circular array. The method may provide an efficient way to increase combination efficiency of laser coherent combination array and may have a broad application prospect in optical communication, particle capture, material processing.

Abstract:We develop and demonstrate a spectroscopic method for Rydberg-Rydberg transitions using a phase-controlled and -modulated, standing-wave laser field focused on a cloud of cold $^{85}$Rb Rydberg atoms. The method is based on the ponderomotive (${\bf{A}}^2$) interaction of the Rydberg electron, which has less-restrictive selection rules than electric-dipole couplings, allowing us to probe both $nS_{1/2}\rightarrow nP_{1/2}$ and $nS_{1/2}\rightarrow (n+1)S_{1/2}$ transitions in first-order. Without any need to increase laser power, third and fourth-order sub-harmonic drives are employed to access Rydberg transitions in the 40 to 70 GHz frequency range using widely-available optical phase modulators in the Ku-band (12 to 18 GHz). Measurements agree well with simulations based on the model we develop. The spectra have prominent Doppler-free, Fourier-limited components. The method paves the way for optical Doppler-free high-precision spectroscopy of Rydberg-Rydberg transitions and for spatially-selective qubit manipulation with $\mu$m-scale resolution in Rydberg-based simulators and quantum computers.

Abstract:Atoms and molecules exposed to strong laser fields can be excited to the Rydberg states with very high principal quantum numbers and large orbitals. It allows acceleration of neutral particles, generate near-threshold harmonics, and reveal multiphoton Rabi oscillations and rich photoelectron spectra. However, the physical mechanism of Rydberg state excitation in strong laser fields is yet a puzzle. Here, we identify the electron-nuclear correlated multiphoton excitation as the general mechanism by coincidently measuring all charged and neutral fragments ejected from a H2 molecule. Ruled by the ac-Stark effect, the internuclear separation for resonant multiphoton excitation varies with the laser intensity. It alters the photon energy partition between the ejected electrons and nuclei and thus leads to distinct kinetic energy spectra of the nuclear fragments. The electron-nuclear correlation offers an alternative visual angle to capture rich ultrafast processes of complex molecules.

Abstract:A new regime is described for radiation pressure acceleration of a thin foil by an intense laser beam of above 1020 W cm−2. Highly monoenergetic proton beams extending to giga-electron-volt energies can be produced with very high efficiency using circularly polarized light. The proton beams have a very small divergence angle (<4°). This new method allows the construction of ultra-compact proton and ion accelerators with ultra-short particle bursts.

Abstract:We present experimental studies on ion acceleration from ultrathin diamondlike carbon foils irradiated by ultrahigh contrast laser pulses of energy 0.7 J focused to peak intensities of 5x10(19) W/cm2. A reduction in electron heating is observed when the laser polarization is changed from linear to circular, leading to a pronounced peak in the fully ionized carbon spectrum at the optimum foil thickness of 5.3 nm. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations reveal that those C6+ ions are for the first time dominantly accelerated in a phase-stable way by the laser radiation pressure.

Abstract:In an atomic ensemble, quantum information is typically carried as single collective excitations. It is very advantageous if the creation of single excitations is efficient and robust. A Rydberg blockade enables deterministic creation of single excitations via a collective Rabi oscillation by precisely controlling the pulse area, being sensitive to many experimental parameters. In this paper, we implement the adiabatic rapid passage technique to the Rydberg excitation process in a mesoscopic atomic ensemble. We make use of a two-photon excitation scheme with an intermediate state off-resonant and sweep the laser frequency of one excitation laser. We find the chirped scheme preserves internal phases of the collective Rydberg excitation and is more robust against variance of laser intensity and frequency detuning.
