Abstract:In this paper, we study a class of contracting flows of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space $${\mathbb {R}}^{n+1}$$ with speed $$r^{\alpha } \sigma _k$$, where $$\sigma _k$$ is the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal curvatures, $$\alpha \in {\mathbb {R}}^1$$, and r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin. If $$\alpha \ge k+1$$, we prove that the flow exists for all time, preserves the convexity and converges smoothly after normalisation to a sphere centred at the origin. If $$\alpha <k+1$$, a counterexample is given for the above convergence. In the case $$k=1$$ and $$\alpha \ge 2$$, we also prove that the flow converges to a round point if the initial hypersurface is weakly mean-convex and star-shaped.

Abstract:We consider the problem of deforming a one-parameter family of hypersurfaces immersed into closed Riemannian manifolds with positive curvature operator. The hypersurface in this family satisfies mean curvature flow while the ambient metric satisfying the normalized Ricci flow. We prove that if the initial background manifold is an approximation of a spherical space form and the initial hypersurface also satisfies a suitable pinching condition, then either the hypersurfaces shrink to a round point in finite time or converge to a totally geodesic sphere as the time tends to infinity.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe the flow of 2-surfaces in R(3) for some negative power of the Gauss curvature. We show that strictly convex surfaces expanding with normal velocity K(-alpha), when 1/2 < alpha <= 1, converge to infinity in finite time. After appropriate rescaling, they converge to spheres. In the 2-dimensional case, our results close an apparent gap in the powers considered by previous authors, that is, for alpha is an element of (0, 1/2] by Urbas and Huisken and for alpha = 1 by Schnurer.

Abstract:In this paper we study a contracting flow of closed, convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space ℝ^n+1 with speed f r^α K, where K is the Gauss curvature, r is the distance from the hypersurface to the origin, and f is a positive and smooth function. If α≥ n+1, we prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly after normalisation to a soliton, which is a sphere centred at the origin if f ≡ 1. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the classical Aleksandrov problem, and resolves the dual q-Minkowski problem introduced by Huang, Lutwak, Yang and Zhang (Acta Math. 216 (2016): 325-388), for the case q<0. If α < n+1, corresponding to the case q>0, we also establish the same results for even function f and origin-symmetric initial condition, but for non-symmetric f, counterexample is given for the above smooth convergence.

Abstract:Let M n be a smooth, compact manifold without boundary, and F 0: M n → R n+1 a smooth immersion which is convex. The one-parameter families F(·, t): M n × [0, T) → R n+1 of hypersurfaces M t n = F(·, t)(M n ) satisfy an initial value problem dt/dF(·, t) = −H k (·, t)ν(·, t), F(·, 0) = F 0(·), where H is the mean curvature and ν(·, t) is the outer unit normal at F(·, t), such that −H ν = $\overrightarrow H $ is the mean curvature vector, and k > 0 is a constant. This problem is called H k -flow. Such flow will develop singularities after finite time. According to the blow-up rate of the square norm of the second fundamental forms, the authors analyze the structure of the rescaled limit by classifying the singularities as two types, i.e., Type I and Type II. It is proved that for Type I singularity, the limiting hypersurface satisfies an elliptic equation; for Type II singularity, the limiting hypersurface must be a translating soliton.

Abstract:It was recently proved that embedded solutions of Euclidean hypersurface flows with speeds given by concave (convex), degree one homogeneous functions of the Weingarten map are interior (exterior) non-collapsing. These results were subsequently extended to hypersurface flows in the sphere and hyperbolic space. In the first part of the paper, we show that locally convex solutions are exterior non-collapsing for a larger class of speed functions than previously considered; more precisely, we show that the previous results hold when convexity of the speed function is relaxed to inverse-concavity. We note that inverse-concavity is satisfied by a large class of concave speed functions. As a consequence, we obtain a large class of two-sided non-collapsing flows, whereas previously two-sided non-collapsing was only known for the mean curvature flow. In the second part of the paper, we demonstrate the utility of two sided non-collapsing with a straightforward proof of convergence of compact, convex hypersurfaces to round points. The proof of the non-collapsing estimate is similar to the previous results mentioned, in that we show that the exterior ball curvature is a viscosity supersolution of the linearised flow. The new ingredient is the following observation: Since the function which provides an upper support in the derivation of the viscosity inequality is defined on $M\times M$ (or $TM$ in the `boundary case'), whereas the exterior ball curvature and the linearised flow equation depend only on the first factor, we are privileged with a freedom of choice in which second derivatives from the extra directions to include in the calculation. The optimal choice is closely related to the class of inverse-concave speed functions.

Abstract:We investigate a system of geometric evolution equations describing a curvature and torsion driven motion of a family of 3D curves in the normal and binormal directions. We explore the direct Lagrangian approach for treating the geometric flow of such interacting curves. Using the abstract theory of nonlinear analytic semi-flows, we are able to prove local existence, uniqueness, and continuation of classical Hölder smooth solutions to the governing system of non-linear parabolic equations modelling $n$ evolving curves with mutual nonlocal interactions. We present several computational studies of the flow that combine the normal or binormal velocity and considering nonlocal interaction.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we investigate closed strictly convex hypersurfaces in ℝn+1{\mathbb{R}^{n+1}} which shrink self-similarly under a large family of fully nonlinear curvature flows by high powers of curvature. When the speed function is given by powers of a homogeneous of degree 1 and inverse concave function of the principal curvatures with power greater than 1, we prove that the only such hypersurfaces are round spheres. We also prove that slices are the only closed strictly convex self-similar solutions to such curvature flows in the hemisphere 𝕊+n+1{\mathbb{S}^{n+1}_{+}} with power greater than or equal to 1.
Numerical approximation of boundary value problems for curvature flow and elastic flow in Riemannian manifolds

Abstract:We present variational approximations of boundary value problems for curvature flow (curve shortening flow) and elastic flow (curve straightening flow) in two-dimensional Riemannian manifolds that are conformally flat. For the evolving open curves we propose natural boundary conditions that respect the appropriate gradient flow structure. Based on suitable weak formulations we introduce finite element approximations using piecewise linear elements. For some of the schemes a stability result can be shown. The derived schemes can be employed in very different contexts. For example, we apply the schemes to the Angenent metric in order to numerically compute rotationally symmetric self-shrinkers for the mean curvature flow. Furthermore, we utilise the schemes to compute geodesics that are relevant for optimal interface profiles in multi-component phase field models.

On the curve diffusion flow of closed plane curves

Abstract:In this paper we consider the steepest descent $H^{-1}$-gradient flow of the length functional for immersed plane curves, known as the curve diffusion flow. It is known that under this flow there exist both initially immersed curves which develop at least one singularity in finite time and initially embedded curves which self-intersect in finite time. We prove that under the flow closed curves with initial data close to a round circle in the sense of normalised $L^2$ oscillation of curvature exist for all time and converge exponentially fast to a round circle. This implies that for a sufficiently large `waiting time' the evolving curves are strictly convex. We provide an optimal estimate for this waiting time, which gives a quantified feeling for the magnitude to which the maximum principle fails. We are also able to control the maximum of the multiplicity of the curve along the evolution. A corollary of this estimate is that initially embedded curves satisfying the hypotheses of the global existence theorem remain embedded. Finally, as an application we obtain a rigidity statement for closed planar curves with winding number one.

Abstract:We study the curve shortening flow on Riemann surfaces with finitely many conformal conical singularities. If the initial curve is passing through the singular points, then the evolution is governed by a degenerate quasilinear parabolic equation. In this case, we establish short time existence, uniqueness, and regularity of the flow. We also show that the evolving curves stay fixed at the singular points of the surface and obtain some collapsing and convergence results.

Abstract:We consider an anisotropic area-preserving nonlocal flow for closed convex plane curves, which is a generalization of the model introduced by Pan and Yang (J. Differential Equations 266 (2019), 3764–3786) when τ = 1. Under this flow, the evolving curve maintains its convexity and converges to a homothety of a smooth symmetric strictly convex plane curve in the C ∞ sense. The analysis of the asymptotic behavior of this flow implies the possibility of deforming one curve into another within the framework of Minkowski geometry.

Abstract:We show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ avoids asymptotically conical and non-spherical compact singularities. We also show that the mean curvature flow of generic closed low-entropy hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$ is smooth until it disappears in a round point. The main technical ingredient is a long-time existence and uniqueness result for ancient mean curvature flows that lie on one side of asymptotically conical or compact shrinking solitons.

Abstract:We investigate the motion of closed, smooth non-self-intersecting curves that evolve in space $\mathbb{R}^3$. The geometric evolutionary equation for the evolution of the curve is accompanied by a parabolic equation for the scalar quantity evaluated over the evolving curve. We apply the direct Lagrangian approach to describe the geometric flow of 3D curves resulting in a system of degenerate parabolic equations. We prove the local existence and uniqueness of classical Hölder smooth solutions to the governing system of nonlinear parabolic equations. A numerical discretization scheme has been constructed using the method of flowing finite volumes. We present several numerical examples of the evolution of curves in 3D with a scalar quantity. In this paper, we analyze the flow of curves with no torsion evolving in rotating and parallel planes. Next, we present examples of the evolution of curves with initially knotted and unknotted curves.

Abstract:A nonlocal curvature flow is introduced to evolve locally convex curves in the plane. It is proved that this flow with any initial locally convex curve has a global solution, keeping the local convexity and the elastic energy of the evolving curve, and that, as the time goes to infinity, the curve converges to a smooth, locally convex curve of constant $k$-order width. In particular, the limiting curve is a multiple circle if and only if the initial locally convex curve is $k$-symmetric.

Abstract:We introduce a novel formulation for the evolution of parametric curves by anisotropic curve shortening flow in ${\mathbb R}^d$, $d\geq2$. The reformulation hinges on a suitable manipulation of the parameterization's tangential velocity, leading to a strictly parabolic differential equation. Moreover, the derived equation is in divergence form, giving rise to a natural variational numerical method. For a fully discrete finite element approximation based on piecewise linear elements we prove optimal error estimates. Numerical simulations confirm the theoretical results and demonstrate the practicality of the method.

Abstract:We consider motion by anisotropic curvature of a network of three curves immersed in the plane meeting at a triple junction and with the other ends fixed. We show existence, uniqueness and regularity of a maximal geometric solution and we prove that, if the maximal time is finite, then either the length of one of the curves goes to zero or the $L^2$ norm of the anisotropic curvature blows up.

Abstract:In this article, we study a locally constrained fully nonlinear curvature flow for convex capillary hypersurfaces in half-space. We prove that the flow preserves the convexity, exists for all time, and converges smoothly to a spherical cap. This can be viewed as the fully nonlinear counterpart of the result in \cite{MWW}. As a byproduct, a high-order capillary isoperimetric ratio (1.6) evolves monotonically along this flow, which yields a class of the Alexandrov-Fenchel inequalities.
