Abstract:Investigating topological effects in materials requires often the modeling of material systems as a whole. Such modeling restricts system sizes, and makes it hard to extract systematic trends. Here, we investigate the effect of Möbius topology in the electronic structures of armchair graphene nanoribbons. Using density-functional tight-binding method and minimum-cell simulations through revised periodic boundary conditions, we extract electronic trends merely by changing cells' symmetry operations and respective quantum number samplings. It turns out that for a minimum cell calculation, once geometric and magnetic contributions are ignored, the effect of the global topology is unexpectedly short-ranged.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: **Explore the influence of the Möbius topological structure on the electronic structure of graphene nanoribbons and extract systematic trends**. Specifically, the author studied the changes in the electronic structure of armchair - type graphene nanoribbons under the Möbius topology through minimum - unit simulation and modified periodic boundary conditions. ### Main problems and methods: 1. **Background and challenges**: - Traditional periodic boundary conditions are difficult to accurately describe materials with special topological structures (such as Möbius strips). - First - principles calculations are complex and difficult to analyze, making it difficult to extract trends and their origins from these calculations. 2. **Research objectives**: - Explore the specific influence of the Möbius topology on the electronic structure of graphene nanoribbons. - Extract length - and width - dependent trends caused by topological effects. - Distinguish topological effects from geometric effects to better understand their independent actions. 3. **Research methods**: - Use the density - functional tight - binding method combined with modified periodic boundary conditions for simulation. - Control topological and length parameters by changing the symmetric operations of unit cells and corresponding quantum number sampling. - Compare the differences between Möbius topology and straight - shaped nanoribbons, especially when geometric effects are excluded. ### Key findings: - **Short - range nature of topological effects**: When geometric effects are excluded, the influence of the Möbius topology on the electronic properties of graphene nanoribbons is unexpectedly short - range. - **Preservation of structural families**: The Möbius topology does not significantly change the structural properties of graphene nanoribbons, that is, they still belong to the three structural families of Clar, Kekulé and incomplete Clar. - **Energy differences and band - gap changes**: For specific structural families, the energy differences and band - gap changes caused by topological changes can be explained by the rigidity and degeneracy of Clar - ring arrangements. - **Length - dependence**: As the length increases, the Möbius topological effect decays exponentially, indicating that for larger aspect ratios, the topological effect becomes less important. ### Conclusion: This study clearly proves for the first time that, after excluding geometric effects, the influence of the Möbius topology on the electronic structure of graphene nanoribbons is short - range. This finding helps to understand the nature of topological effects and provides a new perspective for future research.
