Abstract:The known asymptotic relations interconnecting Jacobi, Laguerre, and Hermite classical orthogonal polynomials are generalized to the corresponding exceptional orthogonal polynomials of codimension $m$. It is proved that $X_m$-Laguerre exceptional orthogonal polynomials of type I, II, or III can be obtained as limits of $X_m$-Jacobi exceptional orthogonal polynomials of the same type. Similarly, $X_m$-Hermite exceptional orthogonal polynomials of type III can be derived from $X_m$-Jacobi or $X_m$-Laguerre ones. The quadratic transformations expressing Hermite classical orthogonal polynomials in terms of Laguerre ones is also extended to even $X_{2m}$-Hermite exceptional orthogonal polynomials.

Abstract:Planar functions are special functions from a finite field to itself that give rise to finite projective planes and other combinatorial objects. We consider polynomials over a finite field $K$ that induce planar functions on infinitely many extensions of $K$; we call such polynomials exceptional planar. Exceptional planar monomials have been recently classified. In this paper we establish a partial classification of exceptional planar polynomials. This includes results for the classical planar functions on finite fields of odd characteristic and for the recently proposed planar functions on finite fields of characteristic two.

Continued fractions and orthogonal polynomials in several variables

Abstract:We extend the close interplay between continued fractions, orthogonal polynomials, and Gaussian quadrature rules to several variables in a special but natural setting which we characterize in terms of moment sequences. The crucial condition for the characterization is the commutativity of the multiplication operators on finite polynomial subspaces modulo an ideal. Moreover, starting from the orthogonal polynomials or the three-term recurrence, our method constructs a sequence of moment sequences that provides an approximation of the maximal order for recovering the moment sequence that defines the orthogonality.

Abstract:We exhibit three examples showing that the "time-and-band limiting" commutative property found and exploited by D. Slepian, H. Landau and H. Pollak at Bell Labs in the 1960's, and independently by M. Mehta and later by C. Tracy and H. Widom in Random matrix theory, holds for exceptional orthogonal polynomials. The property in question is the existence of local operators with simple spectrum that commute with naturally appearing global ones. We illustrate numerically the advantage of having such a local operator.

Abstract:We consider orthogonal polynomials on the surface of a double cone or a hyperboloid of revolution, either finite or infinite in axis direction, and on the solid domain bounded by such a surface and, when the surface is finite, by hyperplanes at the two ends. On each domain a family of orthogonal polynomials, related to the Gegebauer polynomials, is study and shown to share two characteristic properties of spherical harmonics: they are eigenfunctions of a second order linear differential operator with eigenvalues depending only on the polynomial degree, and they satisfy an addition formula that provides a closed form formula for the reproducing kernel of the orthogonal projection operator. The addition formula leads to a convolution structure, which provides a powerful tool for studying the Fourier orthogonal series on these domains. Furthermore, another family of orthogonal polynomials, related to the Hermite polynomials, is defined and shown to be the limit of the first family, and their properties are derived accordingly.

Symmetry Integrability and Geometry Methods and Applications

Abstract:Using the vertex operator representations for symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions, we define two families of symmetric functions and show thatthey are the skew symplectic and skew orthogonal Schur polynomials defined implicitly by Koike and Terada and satisfy the general branching rules. Furthermore, we derive the Jacobi-Trudi identities and Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns for these symmetric functions. Additionally, the vertex operator method yields their Cauchy-type identities. This demonstrates that vertex operator representations serve not only as a tool for studying symmetric functions but also offers unified realizations for skew Schur functions of types A, C, and D.

Abstract:We present explicit constructions of orthogonal polynomials inside quadratic bodies of revolution, including cones, hyperboloids, and paraboloids. We also construct orthogonal polynomials on the surface of quadratic surfaces of revolution, generalizing spherical harmonics to the surface of a cone, hyperboloid, and paraboloid. We use this construction to develop cubature and fast approximation methods.

Abstract:We address the problem of the weak asymptotic behavior of zeros of families of generalized hypergeometric polynomials as their degree tends to infinity. The main tool is the representation of such polynomials as a finite free convolution of simpler elements; this representation is preserved in the asymptotic regime, so we can formally write the limit zero distribution of these polynomials as a free convolution of explicitly computable measures. We derive a simple expression for the S-transform of the limit distribution, which turns out to be a rational function, and a representation of the Kampé de Fériet polynomials in terms of finite free convolutions. We apply these tools, as well as those from [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2309.10970" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2309.10970">arXiv:2309.10970</a>], to the study of some well-known families of multiple orthogonal polynomials (Jacobi-Piñeiro and multiple Laguerre of the first and second kinds), obtaining results on their zeros, such as interlacing, monotonicity, and asymptotics.

Recurrence relations of Exceptional Laurent biorthogonal polynomials

Abstract:Exceptional extensions of a class of Laurent biorthogonal polynomials (the so-called Hendriksen-van Rossum polynomials) have been presented by the authors recently. This is achieved through Darboux transformations of generalized eigenvalue problems. In this paper, we discuss the recurrence relations satisfied by these exceptional Laurent biorthogonal polynomials and provide a type of recurrence relations with $3l_0+4$ terms explicitly, where the parameter $l_0$ corresponds to the degree of the polynomial part in the seed function used in the Darboux transformation. In the proof of these recurrence relations, the backward operator which maps an exceptional polynomial into a classical one plays a significant role.

Abstract:Grothendieck polynomials, introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger, are certain $K$-theory representatives for Schubert varieties. Symplectic Grothendieck polynomials, described more recently by Wyser and Yong, represent the $K$-theory classes of orbit closures for the complex symplectic group acting on the complete flag variety. We prove a transition formula for symplectic Grothendieck polynomials and study their stable limits. We show that each of the $K$-theoretic Schur $P$-functions of Ikeda and Naruse arises from a limiting procedure applied to symplectic Grothendieck polynomials representing certain "Grassmannian" orbit closures.

Abstract:In this note we revisit one of the first known examples of exceptional orthogonal polynomials that was introduced by Dubov, Eleonskii, and Kulagin in relation to nonharmonic oscillators with equidistant spectra. We dissect the DEK polynomials using the discrete Darboux transformations and unravel a characterization bypassing the differential equation that defines the DEK polynomials. This characterization also leads to a family of general orthogonal polynomials with missing degrees and this approach manifests its relation to biorthogonal polynomials introduced by Iserles and Nørsett, which are applicable to a whole range of problems in computational and applied analysis. We also obtain a modification of the Christoffel formula for this family since its classical form cannot be applied in this case.

Abstract:For a family of near banded Toeplitz matrices, generalized characteristic polynomials are shown to be orthogonal polynomials of two variables, which include the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind on the deltoid as a special case. These orthogonal polynomials possess maximal number of real common zeros, which generate a family of Gaussian cubature rules in two variables.

A Generalized Pell's equation for a class of multivariate orthogonal polynomials

Abstract:We extend the polynomial Pell's equation satisfied by univariate Chebyshev polynomials on [--1, 1] from one variable to several variables, using orthogonal polynomials on regular domains that include cubes, balls, and simplexes of arbitrary dimension. Moreover, we show that such an equation is strongly connected (i) to a certificate of positivity (from real algebraic geometry) on the domain, as well as (ii) to the Christoffel functions of the equilibrium measure on the domain. In addition, the solution to Pell's equation reflects an extremal property of orthonormal polynomials associated with an entropy-like criterion.

Abstract:We construct two families of orthogonal polynomials associated with the universal central extensions of the superelliptic Lie algebras. These polynomials satisfy certain fourth order linear differential equations, and one of the families is a particular collection of associated ultraspherical polynomials. We show that the generating functions of the polynomials satisfy fourth order linear PDEs. Since these generating function can be represented by superelliptic integrals, we have examples of linear PDEs of fourth order with explicit solutions without complete integrability.
