Abstract:At present, the Standard Model (SM) agrees with almost all collider data. Yet, three finetuning issues -- the Higgs mass problem, the strong CP problem and the cosmological constant problem -- all call for new physics. The most plausible solutions at present are weak scale SUSY, the PQWW axion and the string landscape. A re-evaluation of EW finetuning in SUSY allows for a higgsino-like LSP and naturalness upper bounds well beyond LHC limits. Rather general arguments from string theory allow for statistical predictions that m_h~ 125 GeV with sparticles beyond present LHC limits. The most lucrative LHC search channel may be for light higgsino pair production. Dark matter turns out to be a SUSY DFSZ axion along with a diminished abundance of higgsino-like WIMPs.

Abstract:The trilinear Higgs coupling λ_{hhh} is crucial for determining the structure of the Higgs potential and for probing possible effects of physics beyond the standard model. Focusing on the two-Higgs-doublet model as a concrete example, we identify parameter regions in which λ_{hhh} is significantly enhanced with respect to the standard model. Taking into account all relevant corrections up to the two-loop level, we show that already current experimental bounds on λ_{hhh} rule out significant parts of the parameter space that would otherwise be unconstrained. We illustrate the interpretation of the results on λ_{hhh} for a benchmark scenario. Similar results are expected for wide classes of models with extended Higgs sectors.

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of contributions from physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) to the Higgs couplings, in the light of the LHC data. The work is performed within an interim framework where the magnitude of the Higgs production and decay rates are rescaled through Higgs coupling scale factors. We perform Bayesian parameter inference on these scale factors, concluding that there is good compatibility with the SM. Furthermore, we carry out a Bayesian model comparison on all models where any combination of scale factors can differ from their SM values and find that typically models with fewer free couplings are strongly favored. We consider the evidence that each coupling individually equals the SM value, making the minimal assumptions on the other couplings. Finally, we make a comparison of the SM against a single “not-SM” model and find that there is moderate to strong evidence for the SM.

Abstract:Varying the Standard Model (SM) fermion Yukawa couplings universally by a generic positive scale factor $ ({F_{{Y\,u}}}) $, we study the phenomenological fit to the current available experimental results for the Higgs boson search at hadron colliders. We point out that the Higgs production cross section and its decay branching ratio to γγ can be varied oppositely by $ {F_{{Y{ ~ }u}}} $ to make their product almost invariant. Thus, our scenario and the SM Higgs are indistinguishable in the inclusive H → γγ channel. The current measurements on direct Yukawa coupling strength in the $ H \to b\overline b /\tau \tau $ channel are not precise enough to fix the scale factor $ {F_{{Y{ ~ }u}}} $. The most promising is the vector-boson-fusion channel in which the CMS has already observed possible suppression effect on the Yukawa couplings. Further more, the global χ2 fit of the experimental data can get the optimal value by introducing a suppression factor $ {F_{{Y{ ~ }u}}} \sim {1}/{2} $ on the SM Yukawa couplings.

Abstract:We discuss the impact and potential discovery of physics beyond the Standard Model, coupling to the Higgs sector, at the LHC. Using a model-independent effective Lagrangian approach, pure Higgs and Higgs-gauge operators are analyzed, and their origin in terms of tree-level exchange of unknown heavy messengers is systematically derived. It is demonstrated that early signals at the LHC may result from a simultaneous modification of Higgs-fermion and Higgs-gauge boson couplings induced by those operators, pointing towards singlet scalar or a triplet vector -- barring fine-tuned options. Of course, the Higgs discovery itself will also be affected by such new couplings. With increasing statistics, the remaining options can be discriminated from each other. On the other hand, the discovery of a new scalar doublet may require technology beyond the LHC, since the Higgs self-couplings have to be measured. Our conclusions are based on the complete set of tree-level decompositions of the effective operators unbiased by a specific model.

Abstract:Higgs coupling deviations from Standard Model predictions contain information about two scales of Nature: that of new physics responsible for the deviation, and the scale where new bosons must appear. The two can coincide, but they do not have to. The scale of new bosons can be calculated by going beyond an effective field theory description of the coupling deviation. We compute model-independent upper bounds on the scale of new bosons for deviations in Higgs to $WW$ and $ZZ$ couplings, finding that any measured deviation at present or future colliders requires the existence of new bosons within experimental reach. This has potentially interesting implications for naturalness.

Abstract:The latest results of Higgs boson searches beyond the Standard Model from the ATLAS and CMS experiments are reviewed. This includes searches for additional neutral, charged, and double charged Higgs-like bosons, searches for dark matter produced in association with a Higgs boson, and searches for new physics in Higgs boson production and decay processes. Interpretations are given within the hMSSM, a special parameterization of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model, in which the mass of the lightest Higgs boson is set to the value of 125 GeV measured at the LHC.

Abstract:The study of the anomalous non-resonant $HH$ production is presented from the point of view of effective field theory (EFT) parameterization. The searches for $pp \rightarrow HH \rightarrow \gamma \gamma WW$, $pp \rightarrow HH \rightarrow \gamma \gamma bb$ and $pp \rightarrow HH \rightarrow bbbb$ processes by ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are reproduced. The selection efficiencies and exclusion limits on the $HH$ production cross sections for different Beyond Standard Model (BSM) EFT benchmark models are obtained using the fast Monte-Carlo simulation of the ATLAS detector.

Abstract:Both parameters in the Higgs field's potential, its mass and quartic coupling, appear fine-tuned to near-critical values, which gives rise to the hierarchy problem and the metastability of the electroweak vacuum. Whereas such behavior appears puzzling in the context of particle physics, it is a common feature of dynamical systems, which has led to the suggestion that the parameters of the Higgs potential could be set through some dynamical process. In this article, we discuss how this notion could be extended to physics beyond the Standard Model (SM). We first review in which sense the SM Higgs parameters can be understood as near-critical and show that this notion can be extrapolated in a unique way for a generic class of SM extensions. Our main result is a prediction for the parameters of such models in terms of their corresponding Standard Model effective field theory Wilson coefficients and corresponding matching scale. For generic models, our result suggests that the scale of new (bosonic) physics lies close to the instability scale. We explore the potentially observable consequences of this connection, and illustrate aspects of our analysis with a concrete example. Lastly, we discuss implications of our results for several mechanisms of dynamical vacuum selection associated with various Beyond-Standard-Model (BSM) constructions.

Abstract:With the discovery of the Higgs at the LHC, experiments have finally addressed all aspects of the Standard Model (SM). At this stage, it is important to understand which windows for beyond the SM (BSM) physics are still open, and which are instead tightly closed. We address this question by parametrizing BSM effects with dimension-six operators and performing a global fit to the SM. We separate operators into different groups constrained at different levels, and provide independent bounds on their Wilson coefficients taking into account only the relevant experiments. Our analysis allows to assert in a model-independent way where BSM effects can appear in Higgs physics. In particular, we show that deviations from the SM in the differential distributions of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$ h\ \to\ V\overline{f}f $\end{document} are related to other observables, such as triple gauge-boson couplings, and are then already constrained by present data. On the contrary, BR(h → Zγ) can still hide large deviations from the SM.

Abstract:In this short note we consider a permitted region in the space of couplings of the 126 GeV boson that extends far away from the standard model Higgs couplings. This region is of interest for more natural models of electroweak symmetry breaking. Stronger evidence of vector boson fusion and/or associated production is needed to eliminate this possibility.

Abstract:We study the implications of minimal flavor violating low energy supersymmetry scenarios for the search of new physics in the B and Higgs sectors at the Tevatron collider and the LHC. We show that the already stringent Tevatron bound on the decay rate Bs→μ+μ- sets strong constraints on the possibility of generating large corrections to the mass difference ΔMs of the Bs eigenstates. We also show that the Bs→μ+μ- bound together with the constraint on the branching ratio of the rare decay b→sγ has strong implications for the search of light, nonstandard Higgs bosons at hadron colliders. In doing this, we demonstrate that the former expressions derived for the analysis of the double penguin contributions in the Kaon sector need to be corrected by additional terms for a realistic analysis of these effects. We also study a specific nonminimal flavor violating scenario, where there are flavor changing gluino-squark-quark interactions, governed by the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements, and show that the B and Higgs physics constraints are similar to the ones in the minimal flavor violating case. Finally we show that, in scenarios like electroweak baryogenesis which have light stops and charginos, there may be enhanced effects on the B and K mixing parameters, without any significant effect on the rate of Bs→μ+μ-.

Abstract:We derive the constraints that can be imposed on the dimension-6 effective theory extension of the Standard Model, using gluon fusion-initiated Higgs boson pair production at the LHC. We use a realistic analysis focussing on the $ hh\to \left(b\overline{b}\right)\left({\tau}^{+}{\tau}^{-}\right) $ final state, including initial-state radiation and non-perturbative effects. We include the statistical uncertainties on the signal rates as well as conservative estimates of the theoretical uncertainties. We first consider a theory containing only modifications of the trilinear coupling, through a c6λ H6/v2 Lagrangian term, and then examine the full parameter space of the effective theory, incorporating current bounds obtained through single Higgs boson measurements. We also consider an alternative scenario, where we vary a smaller sub-set of parameters. Allowing, finally, the values of the other coefficients to vary within projected experimental ranges, we find that the currently unbounded parameter, c6, could be constrained to lie within |c6| ≲ 0.6 at 1σ confidence, at the end of the high-luminosity run of the LHC (14 TeV) in the full model, and to −0.6 ≲ c6 ≲ 0.5 in the alternative model. This study constitutes a first step towards the inclusion of multi-Higgs boson production in a full fit to the dimension-6 effective field theory framework.
Constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to vector bosons and fermions from the production of Higgs bosons using the $ττ$ final state

Abstract:A study of anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons and fermions is presented. The data were recorded by the CMS experiment at a center-of-mass energy of pp collisions at the LHC of 13 TeV and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb$^{-1}$. The study uses Higgs boson candidates produced mainly in gluon fusion or electroweak vector boson fusion at the LHC that subsequently decay to a pair of $\tau$ leptons. Matrix-element and machine-learning techniques were employed in a search for anomalous interactions. The results are combined with those from the four-lepton and two-photon decay channels to yield the most stringent constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings to date. The pure $CP$-odd scenario of the Higgs boson coupling to gluons is excluded at 2.4 standard deviations. The results are consistent with the standard model predictions.

Status of the Higgs Singlet Extension of the Standard Model after LHC Run 1

Abstract:We discuss the current status of theoretical and experimental constraints on the real Higgs singlet extension of the Standard Model. For the second neutral (non-standard) Higgs boson we consider the full mass range from 1 GeV to 1 TeV accessible at past and current collider experiments. We separately discuss three scenarios, namely, the case where the second Higgs boson is lighter than, approximately equal to, or heavier than the discovered Higgs state at around 125 GeV. We investigate the impact of constraints from perturbative unitarity, electroweak precision data with a special focus on higher order contributions to the W boson mass, perturbativity of the couplings as well as vacuum stability. The latter two are tested up to a scale of 4 x 10^10 GeV using renormalization group equations. Direct collider constraints from Higgs signal rate measurements at the LHC and 95% C.L. exclusion limits from Higgs searches at LEP, Tevatron and LHC are included via the public codes HiggsSignals and HiggsBounds, respectively. We identify the strongest constraints in the different regions of parameter space. We comment on the collider phenomenology of the remaining viable parameter space and the prospects for a future discovery or exclusion at the LHC.

Bosonic multi-Higgs correlations beyond leading order

Abstract:The production of multiple Higgs bosons at the LHC and beyond is a strong test of the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking. Taking inspiration from recent experimental efforts to move towards limits on triple Higgs production at the Large Hadron Collider, we consider generic bosonic deviations of $HH$ and $HHH$ production from the Standard Model in the guise of Higgs Effective Field Theory. Including one-loop radiative corrections within the HEFT and going up to ${\mathcal{O}}(p^4)$ in the momentum expansion, we provide a detailed motivation of the parameter range that the LHC (and future hadron colliders) can explore, through accessing non-standard coupling modifications and momentum dependencies that probe Higgs boson non-linearities. In particular, we find that radiative corrections can enhance the sensitivity to Higgs-self coupling modifiers and HEFT-specific momentum dependencies can vastly increase triple Higgs production thus providing further motivation to consider these processes during the LHC's high-luminosity phase.

Abstract:Future perspectives for Higgs physics are outlined. First it is shown that the discovered Higgs boson cannot be the Standard Model (SM) Higgs boson, motivating the investigations of Higgs sectors beyond the SM (BSM). The secure future, the HL-LHC, and the agreed upon future, an $e^+e^-$ collider, are briefly discussed. The importance of theory calculations for the full exploitation of the (anticipated) experimental data is emphasized. Finally, the complementarity of collider based Higgs physics and other types of experiments, such as gravitational wave observatories is briefly outlined.

Abstract:A bstract The Higgs sector in neutral naturalness models provides a portal to the hidden sectors, and thus measurements of Higgs couplings at current and future colliders play a central role in constraining the parameter space of the model. We investigate a class of neutral naturalness models, in which the Higgs boson is a pseudo-Goldstone boson from the universal SO( N ) / SO( N − 1) coset structure. Integrating out the radial mode from the spontaneous global symmetry breaking, we obtain various dimension-six operators in the Standard Model effective field theory, and calculate the low energy Higgs effective potential with radiative corrections included. We perform a χ 2 fit to the Higgs coupling precision measurements at current and future colliders and show that the new physics scale could be explored up to 2.3 (2.4) TeV without (with) the Higgs invisible decay channels at future Higgs factories. The limits are comparable to the indirect constraints obtained via electroweak precision measurements.

Abstract:Experiments have confirmed the presence of a mass gap between the Standard Model and potential New Physics. Consequently, the exploration of effective field theories to detect signals indicative of Physics Beyond the Standard Model is of great interest. In this study, we examine a non-linear realization of the electroweak symmetry breaking, wherein the Higgs is a singlet with independent couplings, and Standard Model fields are additionally coupled to heavy bosonic resonances. We present a next-to-leading-order determination of the oblique $S$ and $T$ parameters. Comparing our predictions with experimental values allows us to impose constraints on resonance masses, requiring them to exceed the TeV scale ($M_R > 2\,$TeV). This finding aligns with our earlier analysis, employing a less generalized approach and the experimental bounds of that time, where we computed these observables.
