Abstract:One of the most important concepts in logic and the foundations of mathematics may be useful in providing an explanation for the cosmological constant problem. A connection between self-reference and consciousness has been previously discussed due to their similar nature of making a reference to itself. Vacuum observation has the property of self-reference and consciousness in the sense that the observer is observing one's own reference frame of energy. In this paper, the cyclical loop model of self-reference is applied to the vacuum observation, such that the discrepancy between the energy density resulting from the first part of the causal loop (i.e., the classical irreversible computation of the observer's reference frame) and the other part of the causal loop (i.e., nondeterministic quantum evolution) corresponds to 10^(123). This effectively provides a consistent explanation of the difference between the observed and the theoretical values of the vacuum energy, namely, the cosmological constant problem.

Abstract:Hilary Putnam once suggested that "the actual existence of sets as 'intangible objects' suffers... from a generalization of a problem first pointed out by Paul Benacerraf... are sets a kind of function or are functions a sort of set?" Sadly, he did not elaborate; my aim, here, is to do so on his behalf. There are well-known methods for treating sets as functions and functions as sets. But these do not raise any obvious philosophical or foundational puzzles. For that, we first need to provide a full-fledged function theory. I supply such a theory: it axiomatizes the iterative notion of function in exactly the same sense that ZF axiomatizes the iterative notion of set. Indeed, this function theory is synonymous with ZF. It might seem that set theory and function theory present us with rival foundations for mathematics, since they postulate different ontologies. But appearances are deceptive. Set theory and function theory provide the very same judicial foundation for mathematics. They do not supply rival metaphysical foundations; indeed, if they supply metaphysical foundations at all, then they supply the very same metaphysical foundations.

Abstract:In our earlier work, we suggested an axiomatic framework for deducing the fundamental entities which constitute the building block of the elementary particles in physics. The basic concept of this theory, named apriorics, is the ontological structure (OS)—an undirected simple graph satisfying specified conditions. The vertices of this graph represent the fundamental entities (FEs), its edges are binary compounds of the FEs (which are the fundamental bosons and fermions), and the structures constituting more than two connected vertices are composite particles. The objective of this paper is to focus the attention on several mathematical theorems and ideas associated with such graphs of order n, including their enumeration, showing what is the information content of apriorics.

Abstract:The persistent challenge of formulating ontic structuralism in a rigorous manner, which prioritizes structures over the entities they contain, calls for a transformation of traditional logical frameworks. I argue that Univalent Foundations (UF), which feature the axiom that all isomorphic structures are identical, offer such a foundation and are more attractive than other proposed structuralist frameworks. Furthermore, I delve into the significance in the case of the hole argument and, very briefly, the nature of symmetries.

Abstract:In part I of the foundation of the hyperunified field theory, we have shown the presence of entangled hyperqubit-spinor field as fundamental building block with appearance of Minkowski hyper-spacetime as free-motion spacetime and emergence of inhomogeneous hyperspin symmetry as fundamental symmetry. In this paper as part II, we demonstrate by following along gauge invariance principle and scaling invariance hypothesis that the inhomogeneous hyperspin gauge symmetry and scaling gauge symmetry govern fundamental interactions and reveal the nature of gravity and spacetime. With the fiber bundle structure of biframe hyper-spacetime and emergence of non-commutative geometry, we explore methodically the gauge-geometry duality and genesis of gravitational interaction in locally flat gravigauge hyper-spacetime. A whole hyperunified field theory in 19-dimensional hyper-spacetime is established to unify not only all discovered leptons and quarks into hyperunified qubit-spinor field but also all known basic forces into hyperunified interaction governed by inhomogeneous hyperspin gauge symmetry. We present a systematic investigate on the hyperunified field theory with deriving the dynamics of fundamental fields as basic laws of nature and conservation laws relative to basic symmetries and showing Higgs-like bosons and three families of lepton-quark states. We provide a detailed analysis on inflationary early universe with evolving graviscalar field and a discussion on scaling gauge field as dark matter candidate and $\cQ_c$-spin scalar field as source of dark energy.

Axiomatization and Forcing in Set Theory with Urelements

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we consider several natural axioms in urelement set theory, including the Collection Principle, the Reflection Principle, the Dependent Choice scheme and its generalizations, as well as other axioms specifically concerning urelements. We prove that these axioms form a hierarchy over $\ZFCUR$ (ZFC with urelements formulated with Replacement) in terms of direct implication. The second part of the paper studies forcing over countable transitive models of $\ZFUR$. We propose a new definition of $¶$-names to address an issue with the existing approach. We then prove the fundamental theorem of forcing with urelements regarding axiom preservation. Moreover, we show that forcing can destroy and recover certain axioms within the previously established hierarchy. Finally, we demonstrate how ground model definability may fail when the ground model contains a proper class of urelements.

Abstract:In this paper we will develop an axiomatic foundation for the geometric study of straight edge, protractor, and compass constructions, which while being related to previous foundations, will be the first to have all axioms written and all proofs conducted in quantifier-free first order logic. All constructions within the system will be justified to be feasible by basic human faculties. No statement in the system will refer to infinitely many objects and one can posit an interpretation of the system which is in accordance to our free, creative process of geometric constructions. We are also able to capture analogous results to Euclid's work on non-planar geometry in Book XI of The Elements. This paper primarily builds on Suppes' paper Quantifier-Free Axioms for Constructive Affine Plane Geometry and draws from Beeson's article A Constructive Version of Tarski's Geometry. By further developing Suppes' work on parallel line segments, we are able to develop analogs to most theorems about parallel lines without assuming an equivalent to Euclid's Fifth Postulate which we deem as introducing non-feasible constructions. In A Constructive Version of Tarski's Geometry, Beeson defines the characteristics such a geometric foundation should have to called constructive. This work satisfies these characteristics. Additionally this work would be considered constructive as Suppes defined it.

On foundations for deductive mathematics

Abstract:This article was motivated by the discovery of a potential new foundation for mainstream mathematics. The goals are to clarify the relationships between primitives, foundations, and deductive practice; to understand how to determine what is, or isn't, a foundation; and get clues as to how a foundation can be optimized for effective human use. For this we turn to history and professional practice of the subject. We have no asperations to Philosophy. The first section gives a short abstract discussion, focusing on the significance of consistency. The next briefly describes foundations, explicit and implicit, at a few key periods in mathematical history. We see, for example, that at the primitive level human intuitions are essential, but can be problematic. We also see that traditional axiomatic set theories, Zermillo-Fraenkel-Choice (ZFC) in particular, are not quite consistent with mainstream practice. The final section sketches the proposed new foundation and gives the basic argument that it is uniquely qualified to be considered {the} foundation of mainstream deductive mathematics. The ``coherent limit axiom'' characterizes the new theory among ZFC-like theories. This axiom plays a role in recursion, but is implicitly assumed in mainstream work so does not provide new leverage there. In principle it should settle set-theory questions such as the continuum hypothesis.

Abstract:We introduce and consider the inner-model reflection principle, which asserts that whenever a statement $\varphi(a)$ in the first-order language of set theory is true in the set-theoretic universe $V$, then it is also true in a proper inner model $W\subsetneq V$. A stronger principle, the ground-model reflection principle, asserts that any such $\varphi(a)$ true in $V$ is also true in some non-trivial ground model of the universe with respect to set forcing. These principles each express a form of width reflection in contrast to the usual height reflection of the Lévy-Montague reflection theorem. They are each equiconsistent with ZFC and indeed $\Pi_2$-conservative over ZFC, being forceable by class forcing while preserving any desired rank-initial segment of the universe. Furthermore, the inner-model reflection principle is a consequence of the existence of sufficient large cardinals, and lightface formulations of the reflection principles follow from the maximality principle MP and from the inner-model hypothesis IMH. We also consider some questions concerning the expressibility of the principles.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to outline a simple set of axioms for basic set theory from which most fundamental facts can be derived. The key to the whole project is a new axiom of set theory which I dubbed "The Law of Extremes". It allows for quick proofs of basic set-theoretic identities and logical tautologies, so it is also a good tool to aid one's memory. I do not assume any exposure to euclidean geometry via axioms. Only an experience with transforming algebraic identities is required. The idea is to get students to do proofs right from the get-go. In particular, I avoid entangling students in nuances of logic early on. Basic facts of logic are derived from set theory, not the other way around.

Abstract:The Theory of Everything ($S_{\text{ToE}}$) seeks to unify all fundamental forces of nature, including quantum gravity, into a single theoretical framework. This theory would be defined internally using a set of axioms, and this paper proposes a set of axioms for any such theory. Furthermore, for such a theory, all scientific truth would be defined internally as consequences derivable from the rules of such a theory. This paper then examines the implications of Tarski's undefinability theorem on scientific truths derived from such axioms. We demonstrate that Tarski's theorem imposes limitations on any such formal system $S_{\text{ToE}}$. However, we also argue that the Lucas-Penrose argument suggests that non-algorithmic understanding can transcend these formal limitations.

Abstract:In this paper, a generalized version of the von Neumann universe known as the total universe is proposed to formally introduce non-well-founded sets that include infinitons, semi-infinitons and quasi-infinitons in Russell's paradox. All three infinitons are part of infinitely generated sets that are generators of non-well-founded sets. The total universe combines the well-founded sets with the non-well-founded ones and turns out to be a model of ZF minus the axiom of regularity, which can be shown invalid in defining the well-founded sets. Also, the total universe is shown to be free of Russell's paradox.

Abstract:How does one formalize the structure of structures necessary for the foundations of physics? This work is an attempt at conceptualizing the metaphysics of pregeometric structures, upon which new and existing notions of quantum geometry may find a foundation. We discuss the philosophy of pregeometric structures due to Wheeler, Leibniz as well as modern manifestations in topos theory. We draw attention to evidence suggesting that the framework of formal language, in particular, homotopy type theory, provides the conceptual building blocks for a theory of pregeometry. This work is largely a synthesis of ideas that serve as a precursor for conceptualizing the notion of space in physical theories. In particular, the approach we espouse is based on a constructivist philosophy, wherein ``structureless structures'' are syntactic types realizing formal proofs and programs. Spaces and algebras relevant to physical theories are modeled as type-theoretic routines constructed from compositional rules of a formal language. This offers the remarkable possibility of taxonomizing distinct notions of geometry using a common theoretical framework. In particular, this perspective addresses the crucial issue of how spatiality may be realized in models that link formal computation to physics, such as the Wolfram model.

Some mathematical issues regarding a new approach towards quantum foundation

Abstract:In this article the weakest possible theorem giving a foundation behind the Hilbert space formalism of quantum theory is stated. The necessary postulates are formulated, and the mathematics is spelled out in details. It is argued that, from this approach, a general epistemic interpretation of quantum mechanics is natural. Some applications to the Bell experiment and to decision theory are briefly discussed. The article represents the conclusion of a series of articles and books on quantum foundation.
