Abstract:This paper develops methods to study the distribution of Eulerian statistics defined by second-order recurrence relations. We define a random process to decompose the statistics over compositions of integers. It is shown that the numbers of descents in random involutions and in random derangements are asymptotically normal with rates of convergence $\mathcal{O} (n^{-1/2})$ and $\mathcal{O}(n^{-1/3})$ respectively.

Abstract:In the context of Stirling polynomials, Gessel and Stanley introduced the definition of Stirling permutation, which has attracted extensive attention over the past decades. Recently, we introduced Stirling permutation code and provided numerous equidistribution results as applications. The purpose of the present work is to further analyse Stirling permutation code. First, we derive an expansion formula expressing the joint distribution of the types $A$ and $B$ descent statistics over the hyperoctahedral group, and we also find an interlacing property involving the zeros of its coefficient polynomials. Next, we prove a strong connection between signed permutations in the hyperoctahedral group and Stirling permutations. Furthermore, we investigate unified generalizations of the trivariate second-order Eulerian polynomials and ascent-plateau polynomials. Using Stirling permutation codes, we provide expansion formulas for eight-variable and seventeen-variable polynomials, which imply several $e$-positive expansions and clarify the connections among several statistics. Our results generalize the results of Bóna, Chen-Fu, Dumont, Janson, Haglund-Visontai and Petersen.

Probability Proofs for Stirling (and More): the Ubiquitous Role of $\mathbf{\sqrt{2π}}$

Abstract:The Stirling approximation formula for $n!$ dates from 1730. Here we give new and instructive proofs of this and related approximation formulae via tools of probability and statistics. There are connections to the Central Limit Theorem and also to approximations of marginal distributions in Bayesian setups. Certain formulae emerge by working through particular instances, some independently verifiable but others perhaps not. A particular case yielding new formulae is that of summing independent uniforms, related to the Irwin--Hall distribution. Yet further proofs of the Stirling flow from examining aspects of limiting normality of the sample median of uniforms, and from these again we find a proof for the Wallis product formula for $\pi$.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce poly-Bernoulli numbers with level $2$, related to the Stirling numbers of the second kind with level $2$, and study several properties of poly-Bernoulli numbers with level $2$ from their expressions, relations, and congruences. Poly-Bernoulli numbers with level $2$ have strong connections with poly-Cauchy numbers with level $2$. In a special case, we can determine the denominators of Bernoulli numbers with level $2$ by showing a von Staudt-Clausen like theorem.

Abstract:This work establishes a definition that is more basic than the previous ones, for the Stirling numbers of first kind, which is a sufficient but not necessary condition for the previous definition. Based on this definition and a combinatorial problem, we discover C sequential optimization numbers, where C is a k+1-tuple vector. For C= (0,1), we prove that C sequential optimization numbers are the unsigned Stirling numbers of first kind. We can deduce the properties of C sequential optimization numbers by following the properties of the Stirling numbers of first kind and we give specific examples such as the recurrence formula and an instance of C sequential optimization numbers. We also give specific new properties such as an explicit upper bound of them. We prove the probability that the unsigned Stirling numbers of first kind are concentrated in O(logn) is nearly 100%.

Explicit estimates for the Stirling numbers of the second kind

Abstract:We give explicit estimates for the Stirling numbers of the second kind $S(n,m)$. With a few exceptions, such estimates are asymptotically sharp. The form of these estimates varies according to $m$ lying in the central or non-central regions of $\{1,\ldots ,n\}$. In each case, we use a different probabilistic representation of $S(n,m)$ in terms of well known random variables to show the corresponding results.

Abstract:We introduce multinomial and $r$-variants of several classic objects of combinatorial probability, such as the random recursive and Hoppe trees, random set partitions and compositions, the Chinese restaurant process, Feller's coupling, and some others. Just as various classic combinatorial numbers - like Stirling, Eulerian and Lah numbers - emerge as essential ingredients defining the distributions of the mentioned processes, the so-called $r$-versions of these numbers appear in exact distributional formulas for the multinomial and $r$-counterparts. This approach allows us to offer a concise probabilistic interpretation for various identities involving $r$-versions of these combinatorial numbers, which were either unavailable or meaningful only for specific values of the parameter $r$. We analyze the derived distributions for fixed-size structures and establish distributional limit theorems as the size tends to infinity. Utilizing the aforementioned generalized Stirling numbers of both kinds, we define and analyze $(r,s)$-Lah distributions, which have arisen in the existing literature on combinatorial probability in various contexts.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to give some new relations, identities, and inequalities for the Bernoulli polynomials and numbers of higher order, the Stirling numbers of the second kind, the Eulerian numbers, and the Catalan numbers. By applying the Laplace transformation to the generating function of the Bernoulli polynomials of higher order, a novel formula for these polynomials is obtained. Integral and series representations for these polynomials and numbers are given. Moreover, the upper bound and the lower bound for the Bernoulli numbers of negative order are given. Some inequalities including the Bernoulli numbers of negative order and the Stirling numbers of the second kind are also given. Finally, appropriate ligaments of the definitions and results introduced here with those in earlier as well as oncoming investigations will be designated.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a generalization of the Stirling numbers of the first kind (classical and analogues versions) related to an extension of elementary symmetric function. These numbers appear as the coefficients of in the expression . The array formed by these coefficients can be seen as a natural generalization of the first Stirling triangle. We also give a combinatorial interpretation of the classical numbers in terms of s -tuples of permutations of [ n ] with k cycles and using the inversion and co-inversion statistics on the cycles in the case of the analogues numbers, which also allows us to establish as a particular case the analogues of the Stirling numbers of the first kind. In addition, using the Legendre–Stirling numbers and the Stirling numbers of the first kind new formulas and useful properties are proposed.

On the Lucky and Displacement Statistics of Stirling Permutations

Abstract:Stirling permutations are parking functions, and we investigate two parking function statistics in the context of these objects: lucky cars and displacement. Among our results, we consider two extreme cases: extremely lucky Stirling permutations (those with maximally many lucky cars) and extremely unlucky Stirling permutations (those with exactly one lucky car). We show that the number of extremely lucky Stirling permutations of order $n$ is the Catalan number $C_n$, and the number of extremely unlucky Stirling permutations is $(n-1)!$. We also give some results for luck that lies between these two extremes. Further, we establish that the displacement of any Stirling permutation of order $n$ is $n^2$, and we prove several results about displacement composition vectors. We conclude with directions for further study.

We provide an upper bound for the occurrences of all the positive integers, and present certain questions for further study. Abstract:Using the Dirichlet theorem on the equidistribution of residue classes modulo $q$ and the Lemke Oliver-Soundararajan conjecture on the distribution of pairs of residues on consecutive primes, we show that the domain of convergence of the infinite product of Dirichlet $L$-functions of non-principal characters can be extended from $\Re(s) > 1$ down to $\Re(s) > \half$, without encountering any zeros before reaching this critical line. The possibility of doing so can be traced back to a universal diffusive random walk behavior $C_N = {\cal O}(N^{1/2})$ of the series $C_N = \sum_{n=1}^N \chi (p_n)$ over the primes $p_n$ where $\chi$ is a Dirichlet character, which underlies the convergence of the infinite product of the Dirichlet functions. The series $C_N$ presents several aspects in common with stochastic time series and its control requires to address a problem similar to the Single Brownian Trajectory Problem in statistical mechanics. In the case of the Dirichlet functions of non principal characters, we show that this problem can be solved in terms of a self-averaging procedure based on an ensemble $\CE$ of block variables computed on extended intervals of primes. Those intervals, called {\em inertial intervals}, ensure the ergodicity and stationarity of the time series underlying the quantity $C_N$. The infinity of primes also ensures the absence of rare events which would have been responsible for a different scaling behavior than the universal law $C_N = {\cal O}(N^{1/2})$ of the random walks.

Abstract:Consider $n$ independent random numbers with a uniform distribution on $[0,1]$. The number of them that exceed their mean is shown to have an Eulerian distribution, i.e., it is described by the Eulerian numbers. This is related to, but distinct from, the well known fact that the integer part of the sum of independent random numbers uniform on $[0,1]$ has an Eulerian distribution. One motivation for this problem comes from voting theory.

Abstract:We investigate extreme values of Mahonian and Eulerian distributions arising from counting inversions and descents of random elements of finite Coxeter groups. To this end, we construct a triangular array of either distribution from a sequence of Coxeter groups with increasing ranks. To avoid degeneracy of extreme values, the number of i.i.d. samples $k_n$ in each row must be asymptotically bounded. We employ large deviations theory to prove the Gumbel attraction of Mahonian and Eulerian distributions. It is shown that for the two classes, different bounds on $k_n$ ensure this.

Abstract:Recently, the Cauchy-Carlitz number was defined as the counterpart of the Bernoulli-Carlitz number. Both numbers can be expressed explicitly in terms of so-called Stirling-Carlitz numbers. In this paper, we study the second analogue of Stirling-Carlitz numbers and give some general formulae, including Bernoulli and Cauchy numbers in formal power series with complex coefficients, and Bernoulli-Carlitz and Cauchy-Carlitz numbers in function fields. We also give some applications of Hasse-Teichmüller derivative to hypergeometric Bernoulli and Cauchy numbers in terms of associated Stirling numbers.

On a conjecture concerning the $r$-Euler-Mahonian statistic on permutations

Abstract:A pair $(\mathrm{st_1}, \mathrm{st_2})$ of permutation statistics is said to be $r$-Euler-Mahonian if $(\mathrm{st_1}, \mathrm{st_2})$ and $( \mathrm{rdes}$, $\mathrm{rmaj})$ are equidistributed over the set $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$ of all permutations of $\{1,2,\ldots, n\}$, where $\mathrm{rdes}$ denotes the $r$-descent number and $\mathrm{rmaj}$ denotes the $r$-major index introduced by Rawlings. The main objective of this paper is to prove that $(\mathrm{exc}_r, \mathrm{den}_r)$ and $( \mathrm{rdes}$, $\mathrm{rmaj})$ are equidistributed over $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$, thereby confirming a recent conjecture posed by Liu. When $r=1$, the result recovers the equidistribution of $(\mathrm{des}, \mathrm{maj})$ and $(\mathrm{exc}, \mathrm{den})$, which was first conjectured by Denert and proved by Foata and Zeilberger.

Abstract:We provide a probabilistic approach using renewal theory to derive some novel identities involving Eulerian numbers and uniform B-splines. The renewal perspective leads to a unified treatment for the normalized binomial coefficients and the normalized Eulerian numbers when studying their limits of sums, as well as their associated distributions — the binomial distributions (Bernstein polynomials) and the Irwin–Hall distributions (uniform B-splines). We further extend the probabilistic perspective to <math>h</math>-Bernstein polynomials (Pólya–Eggenberger distributions) through conditional renewal processes, and derive new limits of various ways of summing for the two special numbers and associated distributions. The proposed probabilistic unification dramatically simplifies the proofs of some identities, which are far from obvious (such as for <math>h</math>-Bernstein polynomials) or do not otherwise even appear promising (such as for Eulerian numbers).

Abstract:We prove that the pair of statistics (des,maj) on multiset permutations is equidistributed with the pair (stc,inv) on certain quotients of the symmetric group. We define the analogue of the statistic stc on multiset permutations, whose joint distribution with the inversions equals that of (des,maj). We extend the definition of the statistic stc to hyperoctahedral and even hyperoctahedral groups. Such functions, together with the Coxeter length, are equidistributed, respectively, with (ndes,nmaj) and (ddes,dmaj).
