Abstract:The two-dimensional Zakharov system is shown to have a unique global solution for data without finite energy if the L^2 - norm of the Schrödinger part is small enough. The proof uses a refined I-method originally initiated by Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka and Tao. A polynomial growth bound for the solution is also given.

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:This expository note aims at illustrating weak convergence of probability measures from a broader view than a previously published paper. Though the results are standard for functional analysts, this approach is rarely known by statisticians and our presentation gives an alternative view to most standard probability textbooks. In particular, this functional approach clarifies the underlying topological structure of weak convergence. We hope this short note is helpful for those who are interested in weak convergence as well as instructors of measure theoretic probability.

Abstract:The present paper deals with -valued measures and the associated Orlicz–Kantorovich lattice. The considered Orlicz–Kantorovich lattice, endowed with the Luxemburg norm, is represented as a measurable bundle of classical Orlicz spaces associated with scalar measures. This kind of representation allows us to investigate positive contractions and apply the corresponding zero-two laws on the classical Orlicz spaces, to prove vector versions of "zero-two" laws on the considered Orlicz–Kantorovich space.

Abstract:We study zeroes of Gaussian analytic functions in a strip in the complex plane, with translation-invariant distribution. We prove that the horizontal limiting measure of the zeroes exists almost surely, and that it is non-random if and only if the spectral measure is continuous (or degenerate). In this case, the limiting measure is computed in terms of the spectral measure. We compare the behavior with Gaussian analytic functions with symmetry around the real axis. These results extend a work by Norbert Wiener.

Abstract:One of the most elusive challenges within the area of topological data analysis is understanding the distribution of persistence diagrams arising from data. Despite much effort and its many successful applications, this is largely an open problem. We present a surprising discovery: normalized properly, persistence diagrams arising from random point-clouds obey a universal probability law. Our statements are based on extensive experimentation on both simulated and real data, covering point-clouds with vastly different geometry, topology, and probability distributions. Our results also include an explicit well-known distribution as a candidate for the universal law. We demonstrate the power of these new discoveries by proposing a new hypothesis testing framework for computing significance values for individual topological features within persistence diagrams, providing a new quantitative way to assess the significance of structure in data.

Abstract:We use an information-theoretic argument due to O'Connell (2000) to prove that every sufficiently symmetric event concerning a countably infinite family of independent and identically distributed random variables is deterministic (i.e., has a probability of either 0 or 1). The i.i.d. condition can be relaxed. This result encompasses the Hewitt-Savage zero-one law and the ergodicity of the Bernoulli process, but also applies to other scenarios such as infinite random graphs and simple renormalization processes.

Abstract:Abstract Let A be a separable (not necessarily unital) simple $C^*$ -algebra with strict comparison. We show that if A has tracial approximate oscillation zero, then A has stable rank one and the canonical map $\Gamma $ from the Cuntz semigroup of A to the corresponding lower-semicontinuous affine function space is surjective. The converse also holds. As a by-product, we find that a separable simple $C^*$ -algebra which has almost stable rank one must have stable rank one, provided it has strict comparison and the canonical map $\Gamma $ is surjective.

Abstract:In this note, a sufficient condition is derived for the stability of a spatially invariant distributed dynamical system, based on the geometrical structure of the null space of a matrix polynomial. This condition is less conservative than the available computationally feasible criteria. Moreover, using the idea of parameter dependent linear matrix inequalities, a necessary and sufficient condition is obtained. Both of these two conditions are expressed by LMIs. While the necessity of the latter is lost if the degree of the related matrix polynomials is small, its conservativeness can be sequentially reduced.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the distribution of nor- malized zero-sets of random entire functions. The normalization of the zero-set is performed in the same way as that of the counting function for an entire function in Nevanlinna theory. The result generalizes the Shiffman and Zelditch theory on the distribution of the zeroes of random holomorphic sections of powers for positive Hermitian holomorphic line bundles from polynomial functions to entire functions. Our result can also be viewed as the analogy of Nevanlinna's First Main Theorem in the theory of the distribution of zero-sets of random entire functions.

Abstract:The most versatile version of the classical divergence Borel-Cantelli lemma shows that for any divergent sequence of events $E_n$ in a probability space satisfying a quasi-independence condition, its corresponding limsup set $E_\infty$ has positive probability. In particular, it provides a lower bound on the probability of $E_\infty$. In this paper we establish a new version of this classical result which guarantees, under an additional mild assumption, that the probability of $E_\infty$ is not just positive but is one. Unlike existing optimal results, it is applicable within the setting of arbitrary probability spaces. We then go onto to consider a range of applications in number theory and dynamical systems. These include new results on the inhomogeneous Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture. In particular, we establish alternatives to the classical (homogeneous) zero-one laws of Cassels and Gallagher and use them to resolve the so-called weak Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture for an arbitrary rational inhomogeneous shift. As a bi-product, we establish the Duffin-Schaeffer conjecture with congruence relations. The applications to dynamical systems include new characterisations of Borel-Cantelli sequences and new dynamical Borel-Cantelli lemmas, as well as characterising Khintchine-type sequences for shrinking targets.

Abstract:A finite or infinite sequence of real numbers is said to be stable if it admits minimal realization by a stable linear system. It is shown that the preservation of stability as such a sequence is truncated or extended is not a generic property even among stable sequences. This is of interest for identification of linear systems from partial data and for partial realization of random systems, in which cases it constitutes a negative result. Certain finite sequences have infinitely many minimal realizations each having different stability properties. In this case, a graphical criterion in the spirit of the Nyquist criterion is derived to exploit this lack of uniqueness in order to determine whether one can achieve a stable pole placement by a judicious choice of partial realization.

Abstract:We prove instability of Type (II) Lawson–Osserman cones in Euclidean spaces, and thus provide a family of (uncountably many) non-smooth unstable minimal graphs of high codimension versus smooth unstable ones by Lawson–Osserman using a min–max technique. To our knowledge, these are the first examples of non-smooth unstable minimal graphs .

Abstract:In the paper, multivariate probability distributions are considered that are representable as scale mixtures of multivariate stable distributions. Multivariate analogs of the Mittag–Leffler distribution are introduced. Some properties of these distributions are discussed. The main focus is on the representations of the corresponding random vectors as products of independent random variables and vectors. In these products, relations are traced of the distributions of the involved terms with popular probability distributions. As examples of distributions of the class of scale mixtures of multivariate stable distributions, multivariate generalized Linnik distributions and multivariate generalized Mittag–Leffler distributions are considered in detail. Their relations with multivariate ‘ordinary’ Linnik distributions, multivariate normal, stable and Laplace laws as well as with univariate Mittag–Leffler and generalized Mittag–Leffler distributions are discussed. Limit theorems are proved presenting necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of the distributions of random sequences with independent random indices (including sums of a random number of random vectors and multivariate statistics constructed from samples with random sizes) to scale mixtures of multivariate elliptically contoured stable distributions. The property of scale-mixed multivariate elliptically contoured stable distributions to be both scale mixtures of a non-trivial multivariate stable distribution and a normal scale mixture is used to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the convergence of the distributions of random sums of random vectors with covariance matrices to the multivariate generalized Linnik distribution.

Abstract:In this paper we show an explicit relation between chains of torsion classes and weak stability conditions over an abelian category. In particular, up to a natural equivalence, they coincide. We investigate topological properties of the space of chains of torsion classes and its quotient given by this equivalence relation. In particular we show that this space is compact if and only if the abelian category has finitely many torsion classes.

Abstract:The topological analysis of chaos based on a knot-theoretic characterization of unstable periodic orbits has proved a powerful method, however knot theory can only be applied to three-dimensional systems. Still, the core principles upon which this approach is built, determinism and continuity, apply in any dimension. We propose an alternative framework in which these principles are enforced on triangulated surfaces rather than curves and show that in dimension three our approach numerically predicts the correct topological entropies for periodic orbits of the horseshoe map.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish necessary and sufficient conditions that must be met for weighted composition operators to act as zero divisors in $\mathcal{B}(\ell^p).$ We also give a necessary condition and a sufficient condition for a composition operators to act as zero divisors in $\mathcal{B}(L^p(\mu)).$ Subsequently, we characterize TDZ in $C(X)$. Afterward, we establish that a multiplication operator $M_h$ in $\mathcal{B}(C(X))$ becomes a TDZ if and only if $h$ is a TDZ in $C(X).$ Further, motivated by the definition of TDZ, we introduce notions of polynomially TDZ and strongly TDZ and prove that every element in $C(X)$ and in $L^\infty(\mu)$ is a polynomially TDZ. We then prove that a multiplication operator $M_h$ in $\mathcal{B}(C(X))$ as well as in $\mathcal{B}(L^p(\mu))$ is a polynomially TDZ. Lastly, we show that each $T\in \mathcal{B}(H)$, where $H$ is a separable Hilbert space, is a strongly TDZ.

Abstract:We study Banach spaces with a weak stable unit ball, that is Banach spaces where every convex combination of relatively weakly open subsets in its unit ball is again a relatively weakly open subset in its unit ball. It is proved that the class of $L_1$ preduals with a weak stable unit ball agree with those $L_1$ preduals which are purely atomic, that is preduals of $\ell_1(\Gamma)$ for some set $\Gamma$, getting in this way a complete geometrical characterization of purely atomic preduals of $L_1$, which answers a setting problem. As a consequence, we prove the equivalence for $L_1$ preduals of different properties previously studied by other authors, in terms of slices around weak stability. Also we get the weak stability of the unit ball of $C_0(K,X)$ whenever $K$ is a Hausdorff and scattered locally compact space and $X$ has a norm stable and weak stable unit ball, which gives the weak stability of the unit ball in $C_0(K,X)$ for finite-dimensional $X$ with a stable unit ball and $K$ as above. Finally we prove that Banach spaces with a weak stable unit ball satisfy a very strong new version of diameter two property.
