Abstract:We investigate the question of whether the spectral metric on the orbit space of a fiber in the disk cotangent bundle of a closed manifold, under the action of the compactly supported Hamiltonian diffeomorphism group, is bounded. We utilize wrapped Floer cohomology to define the spectral invariant of an admissible Lagrangian submanifold within a Weinstein domain. We show that the pseudo-metric derived from this spectral invariant is a valid $Ham$-invariant metric. Furthermore, we establish that the spectral metric on the orbit space of an admissible Lagrangian is bounded if and only if the wrapped Floer cohomology vanishes. Consequently, we prove that the Lagrangian Hofer diameter of the orbit space for any fiber in the disk cotangent bundle of a closed manifold is infinite.

Lagrangian metric geometry with Riemannian bounds

Abstract:We study collections of exact Lagrangian submanifolds respecting some uniform Riemannian bounds, which we equip with a metric naturally arising in symplectic topology (e.g. the Lagrangian Hofer metric or the spectral metric). We exhibit many metric and symplectic properties of these spaces, such that they have compact completions and that they contain only finitely many Hamiltonian isotopy classes. We then use this to exclude many unusual phenomena from happening in these bounded spaces. Taking limits in the bounds, we also conclude that there are at most countably many Hamiltonian isotopy classes of exact Lagrangian submanifolds in a Liouville manifold. Under some mild topological assumptions, we get analogous results for monotone Lagrangian submanifolds with a fixed monotonicity constant. Finally, in the process of showing these results, we get new results on the Riemannian geometry of cotangent bundles and surfaces which might be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this work, we establish new rigidity results for the Maslov class of Lagrangian submanifolds in large classes of closed and convex symplectic manifolds. Our main result establishes upper bounds for the minimal Maslov number of displaceable Lagrangian submanifolds which are product manifolds whose factors each admit a metric of negative sectional curvature. Such Lagrangian submanifolds exist in every symplectic manifold of dimension greater than six or equal to four. The proof utilizes the relations between closed geodesics on the Lagrangian, the periodic orbits of geometric Hamiltonian flows supported near the Lagrangian, and the length minimizing properties of these flows with respect to the negative Hofer length functional.

Abstract:Motivated by the classical bounded Hölder domains, we introduce the notion of an unbounded simply connected Hölder domain. We prove analytic and geometric characterizations of those domains with the aid of the spherical metric and the hyperbolic metric. We also study the relation of our definition to the definition of classical bounded Hölder domains. It turns out that unbounded Hölder domains form a natural class of domains for the study of the Hardy number (which determines the Hardy spaces to which the corresponding Riemann mapping belongs to). As an application of our characterizations, we prove a sharp bound for the Hardy number of an unbounded Hölder domain.

Abstract:We prove a degenerate homological Arnol'd conjecture on Lagrangian intersections beyond the case studied by A. Floer and H. Hofer via a new version of Lagrangian Ljusternik--Schnirelman theory. We introduce the notion of (Lagrangian) fundamental quantum factorizations and use them to give some uniform lower bounds of the numbers of Lagrangian intersections for some classical examples including Clifford tori in complex projective spaces. Additionally, we use the Lagrangian Ljusternik-Schnirelman theory to study the size of the intersection of a monotone Lagrangian with its image of a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism.

Abstract:Let $\Omega \subset \mathbb{C}^2$ be a smooth domain. We establish conditions under which a weakly conformal, branched $\Omega$-free boundary Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian immersion $u$ of a disc in $\mathbb{C}^2$ is a $\Omega$-free boundary minimal immersion. We deduce that if $u$ is a weakly conformal, branched $B_1(0)$-free boundary Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian immersion of a disc with Legendrian boundary data, then $u(D^2)$ must be a Lagrangian equatorial plane disc. We also present examples of $\Omega$-free boundary Hamiltonain stationary discs, demonstrating the optimality of our assumptions.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the following problem: given a Lagrangian $L$ and a Hamiltonian diffeomorphism $\varphi$ such that $\varphi(L)$ is in a small neighbourhood $U$ of $L$, does there exist another Hamiltonian isotopy from $L$ to $\varphi(L)$ supported in $U$? On one side, we construct an irrational counterexample in any symplectic manifold of dimension at least six. On the other side, we answer an a priori weaker form of the question by the positive in many cases when $L$ satisfies some rationality condition. The techniques that we develop also have applications for the Lagrangian counterpart of the $C^0$ flux conjecture. In turn, these results have many applications, in particular, to understand $C^0$-rigidity phenomena of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms and the space of Lagrangians with a given rationality constant.

Abstract:Generalized Aratyn-Ferreira-Zimerman O(3) nonlinear sigma model with a particular symmetry breaking term, so-called dielectric function, is discussed. Static multi-soliton configurations with finite energy and nontrivial Hopf index are found. We show that such configurations consist of nested toroidal solitons. Moreover, nontrivial sphaleron-like solutions i.e. configurations with zero total topological charge are also presented.

Abstract:We prove that (under appropriate orientation assumptions), the action of a Hamiltonian homeomorphism \phi on the cohomology of a relatively exact Lagrangian fixed by \phi is the identity. This extends results of Hu-Lalonde-Leclercq and the author in the setting of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms. We also prove a similar result regarding the action of \phi on relative cohomology.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Lagrangian correspondences between Hilbert spaces. A main focus is the question when the composition of two Lagrangian correspondences is again Lagrangian. Our answer leads in particular to a well-defined composition law in a category of Lagrangian correspondences respecting given polarizations of the Hilbert spaces involved. As an application, we construct a functorial field theory on geometric spin manifolds with values in this category of Lagrangian correspondences, which can be viewed as a formal Wick rotation of the theory associated to a free fermionic particle in a curved spacetime.

Abstract:The Riemannian product of two hyperbolic planes of constant Gaussian curvature -1 has a natural Kähler structure. In fact, it can be identified with the complex hyperbolic quadric of complex dimension two. In this paper we study Lagrangian surfaces in this manifold. We present several examples and classify the totally umbilical and totally geodesic Lagrangian surfaces, the Lagrangian surfaces with parallel second fundamental form, the minimal Lagrangian surfaces with constant Gaussian curvature and the complete minimal Lagrangian surfaces satisfying a bounding condition on an important function that can be defined on any Lagrangian surface in this particular ambient space.

Abstract:A direct reformulation of the Hamiltonian formalism in terms of the intrinsic geometry of infinitely prolonged differential equations is obtained. Concepts of spatial equation and spatial-gauge symmetry of a Lagrangian system of equations are introduced. A non-covariant canonical variational principle is proposed and demonstrated using the Maxwell equations as an example. A covariant canonical variational principle is formulated. The results obtained are applicable to any variational equations, including those that do not originate in physics.

Abstract:In this paper, we construct examples of exact Lagrangians (of "locally conformally symplectic" type) in cotangent bundles of closed manifolds with locally conformally symplectic structures and give conditions under which the projection induces a simple homotopy equivalence between an exact Lagrangian and the $0$-section of the cotangent bundle. This line of questioning follows in the footsteps of Abouzaid and Kragh, and more generally of the Arnol'd conjecture. Notably, we will see that while exact Lagrangians cannot be spheres in this setting, a naive adaptation of the Abouzaid-Kragh theorem does not hold in this generalization.
