Abstract:The Reverend Walter Bidlake, MA, FRAS, JP (1865-1938) was vicar of Crewe, England, for some 21 years. A member of the BAA, he was a keen amateur astronomer with an interest in celestial photography. At the request of another well-known BAA member, T.H.E.C. Espin, Bidlake took photographs of the night sky in support of Espin's search for dark nebulae in the Milky Way. This paper describes Bidlake's astronomical activities and life, including a high profile libel case he brought.

Abstract:T. H. Astbury (1858-1922) was for many years the much-respected headmaster of a boys' junior school in the English market town of Wallingford. By night he was a dedicated amateur astronomer who enjoyed observing meteors, variable stars and many other objects. He began to search few new variable stars, his first discovery being the bright Cepheid variable, RT Aurigae. This, along with his discovery of 4 other variable stars, brought him to attention of some of the most famous professional astronomers of the age, including Herbert Hall Turner, Frank Dyson and Arthur Eddington.

Abstract:The site selection group for the future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) has deployed sensitive light sensors at 9 candidate sites, 5 of them in the Southern and 4 in the Northern hemisphere. The sensors are equipped with a PIN diode and a calibrated V-filter, and a blue/UV filter matching the spectral response of the photomultipliers to be employed in the CTA cameras. All sensor installations, denominated "Atmoscopes", have been cross-calibrated before deployment, and their sensitivity is monitored every two to five months. We show that a thoroughly developed model of the integral contribution of starlight to the overall light measure serves as an additional cross-calibration for each device during each night, reducing the systematic uncertainty of this measurement to less than 15%. The starlight can then be subtracted from the measurements, and the residuals compared among the different sites. We show that in most cases a decomposition into the contributions from zodiacal light, airglow and anthropogenic light pollution is possible.

Abstract:The felsites of Conway Mountain were described by Prof. Bonney more than 16 years ago. Among specimens which I collected in North Wales in 1877, but from which sections have only recently been prepared, there are a few which may be of interest, since they were procured at short intervals from a point at the mouth of the River Conway, and may be regarded as representing the southern portion of the felsite near the fault which, on the Geological Survey map, is shown to separate the felsites of Conway Mountain from those of Diganwy, throwing the latter a considerable distance to the north. The spot at which the specimens were collected is marked Bodlondeb on the Ordnance Survey map. A path runs round this point, bounded on the west by an exposure of rock which has been dressed back so as to form a low natural wall, while a lower wall has been built between the eastern side of the path and the estuary (see map, p. 172). The specimens, or small chips, were consecutively numbered in the order in which they were collected, from south to north. On the south the felsite is succeeded by Bala Beds, which about a mile to the west are marked on the Geological Survey map as dipping 60° southward, but at Bodlondeb the felsites appeared to dip at a higher angle. No. 1 is a pale pinkish-grey rock, somewhat resembling the yellowish felsite which occurs to the west below Castell Caer Seion. The

Abstract:MSE is an 11.25m aperture observatory with a 1.5 square degree field of view that will be fully dedicated to multi-object spectroscopy. More than 3200 fibres will feed spectrographs operating at low (R ~ 2000 - 3500) and moderate (R ~ 6000) spectral resolution, and approximately 1000 fibers will feed spectrographs operating at high (R ~ 40000) resolution. MSE is designed to enable transformational science in areas as diverse as tomographic mapping of the interstellar and intergalactic media; the in-situ chemical tagging of thick disk and halo stars; connecting galaxies to their large scale structure; measuring the mass functions of cold dark matter sub-halos in galaxy and cluster-scale hosts; reverberation mapping of supermassive black holes in quasars; next generation cosmological surveys using redshift space distortions and peculiar velocities. MSE is an essential follow-up facility to current and next generations of multi-wavelength imaging surveys, including LSST, Gaia, Euclid, WFIRST, PLATO, and the SKA, and is designed to complement and go beyond the science goals of other planned and current spectroscopic capabilities like VISTA/4MOST, WHT/WEAVE, AAT/HERMES and Subaru/PFS. It is an ideal feeder facility for E-ELT, TMT and GMT, and provides the missing link between wide field imaging and small field precision astronomy. MSE is optimized for high throughput, high signal-to-noise observations of the faintest sources in the Universe with high quality calibration and stability being ensured through the dedicated operational mode of the observatory. The foundation of "Saint V{é}ran-Paul Felenbok" astronomical observatory

Abstract:This paper is dedicated to the memory of Paul Felenbok (1936-2020) who was astronomer at Paris-Meudon observatory, and founded in 1974, fifty years ago, a high altitude station (2930 m), above Saint V{é}ran village in the southern Alps (Queyras). It was initially devoted to the study of the solar corona. Following solar eclipses (1970, 1973) observed with the Lallemand electronic camera, the main goal was to detect with this sensitive detector the structures of the far and hot corona in forbidden lines, using either narrow bandpass filters or spectroscopy. But everything had to be done prior to observations: a track, a house for astronomers, a dome and a complex instrument. We summarize here this fantastic adventure, which was partly successful in terms of scientific results and had to stop in 1982; however, the activity of the station resumed after 1989 under the auspices of the ``AstroQueyras'' association, which replaced the coronagraph by a 62 cm night telescope from Haute Provence observatory; the station extended later with two 50 cm telescopes, was rebuilt in 2015 and received the visit of thousands of amateurs.

Abstract:ABSTRACT A memorial tribute detailing the life and scientific accomplishments of Frank A. L. Anet, a pioneer of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy who discovered bedrock principles in organic chemistry and magnetic resonance. He was the first to show that nuclear Overhauser effects could provide structural information, significantly impacting future NMR applications. In the 1960s and 1970s, he built entire multinuclear NMR spectrometers operating as high as 396 MHz for protons, detecting nuclei inaccessible to commercial instruments, and operating at very low temperatures for studying molecular structure and dynamics. A titan of physical organic chemistry, Frank made important contributions in the areas of conformational analysis, stereochemistry, isotope effects, NMR relaxation theory, and chemical origins of life.

Abstract:The Faulkes Telescope Project is an educational and research arm of the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network (LCOGTN). It has two 2-metre robotic telescopes, located at Haleakala on Maui (FT North) and Siding Spring in Australia (FT South). It is planned for these telescopes to be complemented by a research network of eighteen 1-metre telescopes, along with an educational network of twenty-eight 0.4-metre telescopes, providing 24 hour coverage of both northern and southern hemispheres. We have been conducting a monitoring project of 13 low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) using FT North since early 2006. The introduction of FT South has allowed us to extend this to monitor a total of 30 LMXBs. New instrumentation will allow us to expand this project to include both infrared wavelengths (z and y band) and spectroscopy. Brighter targets (~ 16 - 18 mag.) are imaged weekly in V, R and i' band (SNR ~ 50), while fainter ones (> 18 mag.) are observed only in i' band (SNR ~ 20). We alter this cadence in response to our own analysis or Astronomers Telegrams (ATels).

Abstract:Astronomers have long tracked double stars in efforts to find those that are gravitationally-bound binaries and then to determine their orbits. Early catalogues by the Herschels, Struves, and others began with their own discoveries. In 1906 court reporter and amateur astronomer Sherburne Wesley Burnham published a massive double star catalogue containing data from many observers on more than 13,000 systems. Lick Observatory astronomer Robert Grant Aitken produced a much larger catalogue in 1932 and coordinated with Robert Innes of Johannesburg, who catalogued the southern systems. Aitken maintained and expanded Burnham's records of observations on handwritten file cards, and eventually turned them over to the Lick Observatory, where astrometrist Hamilton Jeffers further expanded the collection and put all the observations on punched cards. With the aid of Frances M. "Rete" Greeby he made two catalogues: an Index Catalogue with basic data about each star, and a complete catalogue of observations, with one observation per punched card. He enlisted Willem van den Bos of Johannesburg to add southern stars, and together they published the Index Catalogue of Visual Double Stars, 1961.0. As Jeffers approached retirement he became greatly concerned about the disposition of the catalogues. He wanted to be replaced by another "double star man," but Lick Director Albert E. Whitford had the new 120-inch reflector, the world's second largest telescope, and he wanted to pursue modern astrophysics instead. Jeffers was vociferously opposed to turning over the card files to another institution, and especially against their coming under the control of Kaj Strand of the United States Naval Observatory. The USNO got the files and has maintained the records ever since, first under Charles Worley, and, since 1997, under Brian Mason. Now called the Washington Double Star Catalog, it is online.
Documentary photography as vocation: reflecting on Frank Cancian’s contribution to visual studies

Abstract:This article explores the works of the late anthropologist Frank Cancian, specifically considering Another Place (1974), Orange County Housecleaners (2006), and Lacedonia – An Italian Town, 1957 (2016). Re-reading his works together reveals Another Place as a point of departure that concretised Cancian’s vision of documentary photography as a vocation. In particular, the article explores the implications of an exchange with none other than John Collier Jr. that followed the publication of Another Place. This moment reveals Cancian’s orientation towards visual ethnography as toolkit to mobilise a version of cultural relativism and demonstrates Cancian’s resistance to any rigid notions of scientific visual anthropology. The article therefore argues that, in essentially separating the products of his photographic practice (e.g., photobooks) from his ‘professional’ anthropology, Cancian sought new modes of expression through photography. In so doing, he thus confronted an enduring problem for visual scholars – how to engage the world analytically vs. aesthetically. Especially for this reason, bringing Cancian out of contemporary obscurity is useful for visually oriented scholars today.

Towards a full Atmospheric Calibration system for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Abstract:The current generation of Cherenkov telescopes is mainly limited in their gamma-ray energy and flux reconstruction by uncertainties in the determination of atmospheric parameters. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) aims to provide high-precision data extending the duty cycle as much as possible. To reach this goal, it is necessary to continuously and precisely monitor the atmosphere by means of remote-sensing devices, which are able to provide altitude-resolved and wavelength-dependent extinction factors, sensitive up to the tropopause and higher. Raman LIDARs are currently the best suited technology to achieve this goal with one single instrument. However, the synergy with other instruments like radiometers, solar and stellar photometers, all-sky cameras, and possibly radio-sondes is desirable in order to provide more precise and accurate results, and allows for weather forecasts and now-casts. In this contribution, we will discuss the need and features of such multifaceted atmospheric calibration systems.

Historical reconstruction and personal recollections in the Memoirs of Dilworth/Occhialini

Abstract:The folder containing the sheets of the Memoirs of Dilworth/Occhialini is kept in the Dilworth-Occhialini Archives at the BICF Library of the University of Milan. They cover the two English periods of Giuseppe Paolo Stanislao Occhialini (1907-1993): in Cambridge between 1931 and 1934 and in Bristol between 1945 and 1948. The Memoirs were written between an unspecified day in 1992 and April 16, 1993. They do not have the organic form of a historical reconstruction but are recollections and clarifications of Occhialini about some aspects of his activity, neglected by both historians and his colleagues, primarily Powell. Constance Dilworth (1924-2004) was the driving force. In Occhialini's considerations, references to specific dates or documents are often missing. In my contribution, after briefly describing the contents of the Memoirs, I will focus my attention on Occhialini's claim to have been instrumental in improving photographic plates provided by Ilford in the 1945, without Powell ever having acknowledged the importance of the suggestion. The cost and scarcity of telescope resources makes vital learning through doing extremely difficult for students and early career researchers. Abstract:This short document is intended as a companion and introduction to the Detailed Science Case (DSC) for the Maunakea Spectroscopic Explorer. It provides a concise summary of the essential characteristics of MSE from the perspective of the international astronomical community. MSE is a wide field telescope (1.5 square degree field of view) with an aperture of 11.25m. It is dedicated to multi-object spectroscopy at several different spectral resolutions in the range R ~ 2500 - 40000 over a broad wavelength range (0.36 - 1.8{\mu}m). MSE will enable transformational science in areas as diverse as exoplanetary host characterization; stellar monitoring campaigns; tomographic mapping of the interstellar and intergalactic media; the in-situ chemical tagging of the distant Galaxy; connecting galaxies to the large scale structure of the Universe; measuring the mass functions of cold dark matter sub-halos in galaxy and cluster-scale hosts; reverberation mapping of supermassive black holes in quasars. MSE is the largest ground based optical and near infrared telescope in its class, and it will occupy a unique and critical role in the emerging network of astronomical facilities active in the 2020s. MSE is an essential follow-up facility to current and next generations of multi-wavelength imaging surveys, including LSST, Gaia, Euclid, eROSITA, SKA, and WFIRST, and is an ideal feeder facility for E-ELT, TMT and GMT.

Abstract:Details are presented of the Whipple Observatory’s 10m atmospheric Cherenkov telescope and camera, as it evolved during the period 1997 until 2006. The design of the telescope and camera’s optical and electronic systems is discussed together with a detailed description of the four-stage GRANITE (Gamma-RAy New Imaging TElescope) upgrade program, undertaken during the same time period. The objective of the upgrade was to improve the telescope’s sensitivity for the detection of very-high-energy gamma-rays. Results from the program are provided and are briefly discussed in the context of the design of VERITAS.
