Abstract:We derive the Hamiltonian structure of the modified Hasegawa-Mima equation from the ion fluid equations applying Dirac's theory of constraints. We discuss the Casimirs obtained from the corresponding Poisson structure.

Abstract:We show that the classical Hamilton equations of motion can be derived from the energy conservation condition. A similar argument is shown to carry to the quantum formulation of Hamiltonian dynamics. Hence, showing a striking similarity between the quantum formulation and the classical formulation. Furthermore, it is shown that the fundamental commutator can be derived from the Heisenberg equations of motion and the quantum Hamilton equations of motion. Also, that the Heisenberg equations of motion can be derived from the Schrödinger equation for the quantum state, which is the fundamental postulate. These results are shown to have important bearing for deriving the quantum Maxwell’s equations.

Abstract:A Hamiltonian formulation of adiabatic free boundary inviscid fluid flow using only physical variables is presented in both the material and spatial formulation. Using the symmetry of particle relabeling, we derive the noncanonical Poisson bracket in Eulerian representation as a reduction from the canonical bracket in Lagrangian representation. When the free boundary of the fluid is given as the zero set of a function dragged along by the fluid flow, there is another bracket due to Abarbanel et al. [Physics of Fluids, (vol. 31), (2802), (1988)]. It is shown that this formulation «coverså the present one by proving that the natural restriction map is Poisson. It is also shown that the potential vortycity and the conserved quantities found by Abarbanel and Holm [Physics of Fluids (vol. 30), (3369), (1987)] are also conserved in the free boundary case.

Abstract:We present a new variational principle for the gyrokinetic system, similar to the Maxwell-Vlasov action presented in H. Cendra et al., [J. Math. Phys. 39, 3138 (1998)]. The variational principle is in the Eulerian frame and based on constrained variations of the phase space fluid velocity and particle distribution function. Using a Legendre transform, we explicitly derive the field theoretic Hamiltonian structure of the system. This is carried out with a modified Dirac theory of constraints, which is used to construct meaningful brackets from those obtained directly from Euler-Poincaré theory. Possible applications of these formulations include continuum geometric integration techniques, large-eddy simulation models, and Casimir type stability methods.

Abstract:The Hamiltonian formulation for perfect fluid equations with the l-conformal Galilei symmetry is proposed. For an arbitrary half-integer value of the parameter l, the Hamilton and non-canonical Poisson brackets are found, in terms of which the original higher derivative equations of motion take the conventional Hamiltonian form. The full set of conserved charges is found and their algebra is established.

Port-Hamiltonian formulations of the incompressible Euler equations with a free surface

Abstract:In this paper, we present port-Hamiltonian formulations of the incompressible Euler equations with a free surface governed by surface tension and gravity forces, modelling e.g. capillary and gravity waves and the evolution of droplets in air. Three sets of variables are considered, namely $(v,\Sigma)$, $(\eta,\phi_{\partial},\Sigma)$ and $(\omega,\phi_{\partial},\Sigma)$, with $v$ the velocity, $\eta$ the solenoidal velocity, $\phi_{\partial}$ a potential, $\omega$ the vorticity, and $\Sigma$ the free surface, resulting in the incompressible Euler equations in primitive variables and the vorticity equation. First, the Hamiltonian formulation for the incompressible Euler equations in a domain with a free surface combined with a fixed boundary surface with a homogeneous boundary condition will be derived in the proper Sobolev spaces of differential forms. Next, these results will be extended to port-Hamiltonian formulations allowing inhomogeneous boundary conditions and a non-zero energy flow through the boundaries. Our main results are the construction and proof of Dirac structures in suitable Sobolev spaces of differential forms for each variable set, which provides the core of any port-Hamiltonian formulation. Finally, it is proven that the state dependent Dirac structures are related to Poisson brackets that are linear, skew-symmetric and satisfy the Jacobi identity.

Abstract:We present molecular dynamics results for a two component, two-dimensional Lennard-Jones supercooled liquid near the glass transition. We find that the supercooled liquid is spatially heterogeneous and that there are long-lived clusters whose size distribution satisfies a scaling relation up to a cutoff. The similarity of several properties of the supercooled liquid to those of a mean-field glass-forming fluid near the spinodal suggests that the glass transition in the supercooled liquid is associated with an underlying thermodynamic instability.

Abstract:The Hamiltonian formulations for the perturbed Vlasov-Maxwell equations and the perturbed ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations are expressed in terms of the perturbation derivative $\partial{\cal F}/\partial\epsilon \equiv [{\cal F}, {\cal S}]$ of an arbitrary functional ${\cal F}[\vb{\psi}]$ of the Vlasov-Maxwell fields $\vb{\psi} = ({\sf f},{\bf E},{\bf B})$ or the ideal MHD fields $\vb{\psi} = (\rho,{\bf u},s,{\bf B})$, which are assumed to depend continuously on the (dimensionless) perturbation parameter $\epsilon$. Here, $[\;,\;]$ denotes the functional Poisson bracket for each set of plasma equations and the perturbation {\it action} functional ${\cal S}$ is said to generate dynamically accessible perturbations of the plasma fields. The new Hamiltonian perturbation formulation introduces a framework for functional perturbation methods in plasma physics and highlights the crucial roles played by polarization and magnetization in Vlasov-Maxwell and ideal MHD perturbation theories. One application considered in this paper is a formulation of plasma stability that guarantees dynamical accessibility and leads to a natural generalization to higher-order perturbation theory.

Abstract:In the presence of an inhomogeneous oscillatory electric field, charged particles experience a net force, averaged over the oscillatory timescale, known as the ponderomotive force. We derive a one-dimensional Hamiltonian model which self-consistently couples the electromagnetic field to a plasma which experiences the ponderomotive force. We derive a family of structure preserving discretizations of the model of varying order in space and time using conforming and broken finite element exterior calculus spectral element methods. In all variants of our discretization framework, the method is found to conserve the Casimir invariants of the continuous model to machine precision and the energy to the order of the splitting method used.

Abstract:The goal of this paper is to derive the Hamiltonian structure of polarized and magnetized Euler-Maxwell fluids by reduction of the canonical symplectic form on phase space, and to generalize the dynamics to the non-abelian case. The Hamiltonian function we propose in this case, allows us to unify and relate in a simple way the main models of nonabelian charged fluids and their Hamiltonian structures. © 2011 International Press.
Revealing Noncanonical Hamiltonian Structures in Relativistic Fluid Dynamics

Abstract:We present the noncanonical Hamiltonian structure of the relativistic Euler equations for a perfect fluid in Minkowski spacetime. By identifying the system's noncanonical Poisson bracket and Hamiltonian, we show that relativistic fluid flows preserve helicity and enstrophy as conserved quantities in three-dimensional and two-dimensional cases, respectively. This holds when the fluid follows a relativistic $\gamma$-barotropic equation of state, which generalizes the classical barotropic condition. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these conserved quantities are Casimir invariants associated with the noncanonical Poisson structure. These findings open new avenues for applying Hamiltonian theory to the study of astrophysical fluids and relativistic plasmas.

Abstract:A four-field reduced model of single helicity, incompressible MHD is derived in cylindrical geometry. An appropriate set of noncanonical variables is found, and the Hamiltonian, the Lie-Poisson bracket and the Casimir invariants are clarified. Detailed proofs of properties of the Lie-Poisson bracket, (i) antisymmetry, (ii) Leibniz rule, and (iii) Jacobi identity, are given. Two applications are presented: the first is that the local dispersion relation of axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamics (MRI) is properly reproduced, and the second is that linear stability analyses including negative-energy MRI were successfully performed.

Abstract:Abstract The ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) as well as the ideal fluid dynamics is governed by the Hamilton equation with respect to the Lie-Poisson bracket. The Nambu bracket manifestly represents the Lie-Poisson structure in terms of derivative of the Casimir invariants. We construct a compact Nambu-bracket representation for the three-dimensional ideal MHD equations, with use of three Casimirs for the second Hamiltonians, the total entropy and the magnetic and cross helicities, whose coefficients are all constant. The Lie-Poisson bracket induced by this Nambu bracket does not coincide with the original one, but supplemented by terms with an auxiliary variable. The supplemented Lie-Poisson bracket qualifies the cross-helicity as the Casimir. By appealing to Noether’s theorem, we show that the cross-helicity is the integral invariant associated with the particle-relabeling symmetry. Employing the Lagrange label function, as the independent variable in the variational framework, facilitates implementation of the relabeling transformation. By incorporating the divergence symmetry, other known topological invariants are put on the same ground of Noether’s theorem.

Abstract:Fluid reductions of the Vlasov-Amp{è}re equations that preserve the Hamiltonian structure of the parent kinetic model are investigated. Hamiltonian closures using the first four moments of the Vlasov distribution are obtained, and all closures provided by a dimensional analysis procedure for satisfying the Jacobi identity are identified. Two Hamiltonian models emerge, for which the explicit closures are given, along with their Poisson brackets and Casimir invariants.

Abstract:From the Hamiltonian structure of the Vlasov equation, we build a Hamiltonian model for the first three moments of the Vlasov distribution function, namely, the density, the momentum density and the specific internal energy. We derive the Poisson bracket of this model from the Poisson bracket of the Vlasov equation, and we discuss the associated Casimir invariants.

A Hamiltonian description of finite-time singularity in Euler's fluid equations

Abstract:The recently proposed low degree-of-freedom model of Moffat and Kimura [1,2] for describing the approach to finite-time singularity of the incompressible Euler fluid equations is investigated. The model assumes an initial finite-energy configuration of two vortex rings placed symmetrically on two tilted planes. The Hamiltonian structure of the inviscid limit of the model is obtained. The associated noncanonical Poisson bracket [3] and two invariants, one that serves as the Hamiltonian and the other a Casimir invariant, are discovered. It is shown that the system is integrable with a solution that lies on the intersection for the two invariants, just as for the free rigid body of mechanics whose solution lies on the intersection of the kinetic energy and angular momentum surfaces. Also, a direct quadrature is given and used to demonstrate the Leray form for finite-time singularity in the model. To the extent the Moffat and Kimura model accurately represents Euler's ideal fluid equations of motion, we have shown the existence of finite-time singularity.

Abstract:Cahn-Hilliard-Navier-Stokes (CHNS) systems describes flows with two-phases, e.g., a liquid with bubbles. Obtaining constitutive relations for general dissipative processes for such a systems, which are thermodynamically consistent, can be a challenge. We show how the metriplectic 4-bracket formalism achieves this in a straightforward, in fact algorithmic, manner. First, from the noncanonical Hamiltonian formulation for the ideal part of a CHNS system we obtain an appropriate Casimir to serve as the entropy in the metriplectic formalism that describes the dissipation (e.g. viscosity, heat conductivity and diffusion effects). General thermodynamics with the thermodynamic conjugates of concentration and chemical potential are included. Having expressions for the Hamiltonian (energy), entropy, and Poisson bracket, we describe a procedure for obtaining a metriplectic 4-bracket that describes thermodynamically consistent dissipative effects. The 4-bracket formalism leads naturally to a general CHNS system that allows for anisotropic surface energy effects. This general CHNS system reduces to cases in the literature, to which we can compare.

Abstract:We present two generalized hybrid kinetic-Hall magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) models describing the interaction of a two-fluid bulk plasma, which consists of thermal ions and electrons, with energetic, suprathermal ion populations described by Vlasov dynamics. The dynamics of the thermal components are governed by standard fluid equations in the Hall MHD limit with the electron momentum equation providing an Ohm's law with Hall and electron pressure terms involving a gyrotropic electron pressure tensor. The coupling of the bulk, low-energy plasma with the energetic particle dynamics is accomplished through the current density (current coupling scheme; CCS) and the ion pressure tensor appearing in the momentum equation (pressure coupling scheme; PCS) in the first and the second model, respectively. The CCS is a generalization of two well-known models, because in the limit of vanishing energetic and thermal ion densities, we recover the standard Hall MHD and the hybrid kinetic-ions/fluid-electron model, respectively. This provides us with the capability to study in a continuous manner, the global impact of the energetic particles in a regime extending from vanishing to dominant energetic particle densities. The noncanonical Hamiltonian structures of the CCS and PCS, which can be exploited to study equilibrium and stability properties through the energy-Casimir variational principle, are identified. As a first application here, we derive a generalized Hall MHD Grad–Shafranov–Bernoulli system for translationally symmetric equilibria with anisotropic electron pressure and kinetic effects owing to the presence of energetic particles using the PCS.
