Abstract:A novel coding scheme called the distributed generalized low-density (GLD) code is proposed for cooperative relay networks. In this scheme, each relay node decodes and forwards some of the constituent codes of the GLD code to cooperatively form a distributed GLD code using the partial error-detecting and error-correcting capabilities of the GLD code. Distributed GLD codes can easily be adjusted to the variation of the relay number while the overall code rate of the system is constant. At the destination, the soft information from different paths can be combined for the GLD decoder thus diversity gain and coding gain are achieved simultaneously. Verified by simulations, the scheme can obtain significant performance gains over the strategy without relay in quasi-static fading channels and the performance is further improved when more relays are employed.
Minimal Header Overhead for Random Linear Network Coding

Abstract:The energy used to transmit a single bit of data between the devices in wireless networks is equal to the energy for performing hundreds of instructions in those devices. Thus the reduction of the data necessary to transmit, while keeping the same functionality of the employed algorithms is a formidable and challenging scientific task. We describe an algorithm called Small Set of Allowed Coefficients (SSAC) that produces the shortest header overhead in random linear network coding schemes compared with all other approaches reported in the literature. The header overhead length is 2 to 7 times shorter than the length achieved by related compression techniques. For example, SSAC algorithm compresses the length of the header overhead in a generation of 128 packets to 24 bits, while the closest best result achieved by an algorithm based on error correcting codes has a header overhead length of 84 bits in $GF(16)$ and 224 bits in $GF(256)$. We show that the header length in SSAC does not depend on the size of the finite field where the operations are performed, i.e., it just depends on the number of combined packets $m$.

Reliable Network Coding for Minimizing Decoding Delay and Feedback Overhead in Wireless Broadcasting

Abstract:Network coding techniques have absorbed much attention for providing reliable broadcasting services in wireless networks. However, the intrinsic tradeoff among throughput, decoding delay, and feedback overhead has obstructed the application of the previously proposed schemes in practice. In this paper, we firstly propose a rate-controlled network coding scheme (RANC), which can effectively reduce the decoding delay of the receiver suffering from a poor channel condition, without compromising the system throughput. Based on RANC, we further propose a moving window network coding scheme together with an early loss alarm mechanism (MWNC-ELA), which achieves similar decoding delay performance to RANC, but greatly simplifies its feedback mechanism. As a benchmark of MWNC-ELA, we analyze the decoding delay performance of RANC using the random walk theory. Simulation results show that the proposed schemes outperform the existing solutions in terms of throughput, decoding delay, and feedback overhead.

Abstract:Current implementations of multi-hop wireless networks suffer from a severe throughput limitation and do not scale well with an increasing number of nodes. A promising architecture COPE [12], which exploits the physical-layer broadcast property and network coding technique, was recently proposed to significantly improve the throughput of multi-hop wireless networks. In this paper, we will improve the packet coding scheme in COPE to further reduce the number of bytes transmitted by a network node for forwarding its incoming packets to the respective neighbors. We first propose a more general packet coding framework, which covers the one in COPE as a special case and can offer us more coding opportunities. We then formulate the optimal packet coding problem under this general coding framework as an integer programming problem, and prove that it is NP-complete. Finally, we present an efficient algorithm to find the optimal coding solution for the proposed general packet coding framework.

Abstract:We consider communication over a noisy network under randomized linear network coding. Possible error mechanism include node- or link- failures, Byzantine behavior of nodes, or an over-estimate of the network min-cut. Building on the work of Koetter and Kschischang, we introduce a probabilistic model for errors. We compute the capacity of this channel and we define an error-correction scheme based on random sparse graphs and a low-complexity decoding algorithm. By optimizing over the code degree profile, we show that this construction achieves the channel capacity in complexity which is jointly quadratic in the number of coded information bits and sublogarithmic in the error probability.

Abstract:We present a superposition coding scheme for communication over a network, which combines partial decode and forward with noisy network coding. This hybrid scheme is termed as superposition noisy network coding. The scheme is designed and analyzed for a single relay channel, single source multicast network and multiple source multicast network. The achievable rate region is determined for each case. The special cases of Gaussian single relay channel and two way relay channel are analyzed for superposition noisy network coding. The achievable rate of the proposed scheme is higher than the existing schemes of noisy network coding and compress-forward.
Network Codes with Overlapping Chunks over Line Networks: A Case for Linear-Time Codes

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of designing network codes that are both communicationally and computationally efficient over packet line networks with worst-case schedules is considered. In this context, random linear network codes (dense codes) are asymptotically capacity-achieving, but require highly complex coding operations. To reduce the coding complexity, Maymounkov et al. proposed chunked codes (CC). Chunked codes operate by splitting the message into non-overlapping chunks and send a randomly chosen chunk at each transmission time by a dense code. The complexity, that is linear in the chunk size, is thus reduced compared to dense codes. In this paper, the existing analysis of CC is revised, and tighter bounds on the performance of CC are derived. As a result, we prove that (i) CC with sufficiently large chunks are asymptotically capacity-achieving, but with a slower speed of convergence compared to dense codes; and (ii) CC with relatively smaller chunks approach the capacity with an arbitrarily small but non-zero constant gap. To improve the speed of convergence of CC, while maintaining their advantage in reducing the computational complexity, we propose and analyze a new CC scheme with overlapping chunks, referred to as overlapped chunked codes (OCC). We prove that for smaller chunks, which are advantageous due to lower computational complexity, OCC with larger overlaps provide a better tradeoff between the speed of convergence and the message or packet error rate. This implies that for smaller chunks, and with the same computational complexity, OCC outperform CC in terms of the speed of approaching the capacity for sufficiently small target error rate. In fact, we design linear-time OCC with very small chunks (constant in the message size) that are both computationally and communicationally efficient, and that outperform linear-time CC.

Abstract:Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) is well-known to provide high throughput and low latency for vast communication networks. However, RLNC often suffers from high coefficients overhead, specifically, when it's applied to limited resource or short-packet networks. Herein, the problem of RLNC coefficients vector overhead is revisited. A novel framework, based on modular arithmetic and prime numbers, and influenced by the Chinese remainder theorem (CRT), is proposed to reduce the coefficients overhead by augmenting only a tiny one item coefficient instead of the entire coefficients vector. The proposed method successfully addresses all the shortcomings of previous methods, including restrictions on generation size and packet density, recoding on intermediate nodes, and creating innovative coding vectors. Theoretical analysis and experimental demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed scheme in terms of coefficients overhead ratio, download time, throughput, and packet drop rate. This evaluation has considered two types of networks: wireless sensors network for Internet of things, and conventional wireline Ethernet.

Abstract:We present an optimized joint source and channel bit allocation approach for achieving better video constructed quality subject to a given bits consumption, by exploiting data partitioning and LDPC We assign different bits of forward error correction to data partition with different priority by jointly considering the source and channel distortion with hill climbing search algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme achieves excellent tradeoff between video delivery quality and bit consumption and yields significant PSNR improvement.
Multi-component Network Product Coding for Cooperative Relaying

Abstract:Network product coding, a promising and anti-fading technology, can not only outperform the conventional XOR based network coding scheme in bit error rate performance, but also reduce the number of relays required in the network. A multi-component network product coding scheme was designed for cooperative multiple access scenarios. Analytical results are developed to show that the constructed network product codes are able to realize asymptotically Gaussian weight distribution which is desirable to good error-correcting ability. Simulation results are also provided to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the impact of network coding (NC) configuration on the performance of ad hoc networks with the consideration of two significant factors, namely, the throughput loss and the decoding loss, which are jointly treated as the overhead of NC. In particular, physical-layer NC and random linear NC are adopted in static and mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), respectively. Furthermore, we characterize the goodput and delay/goodput tradeoff in static networks, which are also analyzed in MANETs for different mobility models (i.e., the random independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) mobility model and the random walk model) and transmission schemes (i.e., the two-hop relay scheme and the flooding scheme). Moreover, the optimal configuration of NC, which consists of the data size, generation size, and NC Galois field, is derived to optimize the delay/goodput tradeoff and goodput. The theoretical results demonstrate that NC does not bring about order gain on delay/goodput tradeoff for each network model and scheme, except for the flooding scheme in a random i.i.d. mobility model. However, the goodput improvement is exhibited for all the proposed schemes in mobile networks. To our best knowledge, this is the first work to investigate the scaling laws of NC performance and configuration with the consideration of coding overhead in ad hoc networks.
Effects of the Generation Size and Overlap on Throughput and Complexity in Randomized Linear Network Coding

Abstract:To reduce computational complexity and delay in randomized network coded content distribution, and for some other practical reasons, coding is not performed simultaneously over all content blocks, but over much smaller, possibly overlapping subsets of these blocks, known as generations. A penalty of this strategy is throughput reduction. To analyze the throughput loss, we model coding over generations with random generation scheduling as a coupon collector's brotherhood problem. This model enables us to derive the expected number of coded packets needed for successful decoding of the entire content as well as the probability of decoding failure (the latter only when generations do not overlap) and further, to quantify the tradeoff between computational complexity and throughput. Interestingly, with a moderate increase in the generation size, throughput quickly approaches link capacity. Overlaps between generations can further improve throughput substantially for relatively small generation sizes.

Communication-Optimal Coding Designs for Caching Networks

Abstract:In this survey paper, we review three recent main results on cache networks, which not only considerably sharpen the approximate characterization of the rate-memory trade off, but also extend those results to more general networks. In these systems, a server with a database of some files (e.g. movies) is connected to multiple users via a communication network. Each user has an isolated memory of limited size that can be used for caching. The system operates in two phases: a placement phase where users each store a portion of the files in their local cache, and a delivery phase, where the users each request a file and the server delivers coded messages to the users, fulfilling their file requests. We start by considering the shared bottleneck network in two flavors of the system, with uncoded prefetching and with coded prefetching. First, for uncoded prefetching, an optimal design is proposed, under both centralized and decentralized settings, for both peak rate and average rate. The exact optimality is proven through a matching converse. Second, for caching with coded prefetching, we present a design that is optimal within a factor of approximately 2, which strictly improves the state of the art. Lastly, we move the focus to more general network topologies, and present an order-wise optimal scheme that is independent of the underlying communication network between the server and the users. This scheme is shown to achieve the minimum delivery delay with a constant factor for all memoryless networks.
Towards Minimizing the Within-Packet Redundancy in Wireless Network Coding

Abstract:Network coding, by right of the concise form and remarkable effect, has been applauded around the world since its emergence especially in the field of wireless communication. However, we find the superiority of network coding may be concealed by the over redundant information in coded packets under certain circumstances. That is, the back-and-forth coding at intermediate nodes makes the old information live forever in the network, occupying buffers and sophisticating decoding at receiving nodes. In this paper, we concentrate on the topic that has not aroused enough attention and introduce a simple method to trim the redundant information resort to Information-Centric Networking (ICN) with the invertibility of network coding before encoding again. After quantifying the calculation overhead of the method, we conduct experiments to validate the analysis in conjunction with the transmission efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate an approximate linear characteristic for the calculation overhead which we believe is affordable for hardware.

Abstract:Network coding is a new and promising paradigm for modern communication networks by allowing intermediate nodes to mix messages received from multiple sources. Compute-and-forward strategy is one category of network coding in which a relay will decode and forward a linear combination of source messages according to the observed channel coefficients, based on the algebraic structure of lattice codes. The destination will recover all transmitted messages if enough linear equations are received. In this work, we design in a system level, the compute-and-forward network coding coefficients by Fincke-Pohst based candidate set searching algorithm and network coding system matrix constructing algorithm, such that by those proposed algorithms, the transmission rate of the multi-source multi-relay system is maximized. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms.

Opportunistic Network Coding for Wireless Networks

Abstract:Network coding is an emerging and powerful solution that can significantly improve the throughput and power efficiency of wireless networks by allowing mixing of various traffic flows via algebraic operations. With network coding, however, a packet has to wait to be network-coded with others given the stochastic nature of the packet arrival process of the various flows. This may result in large delay and packet-loss rate. To overcome this limitation, a novel network coding approach, which we shall refer to as opportunistic network coding (ONQ, is presented in this paper. In this proposed approach, whether a packet is transmitted with or without network coding is determined by the buffer's queue state at a given node. We shall derive ONC's performance in terms of delay, packet-loss, and power consumption by formulating a Markov Chain and a Hidden Markov Model for the delay and power analysis. More importantly, we will develop an optimal ONC strategy with minimal average delay and zero packet-loss rate. In particular, we will show that there exists a fundamental tradeoff between average delay and power, which characterizes the performance limit of ONC.
A Quadratic Programming Relaxation Approach to Compute-and-forward Network Coding Design.

Abstract:In wireless networks, the compute-and-forward strategy is a promising physical layer network coding scheme that can achieve high rates by effectively exploiting the interference between users. However, the design of the optimal integer-valued equation coefficient vectors in a compute-and-forward scheme turns out to be a shortest vector problem, which is known to be NP hard. In this work, we consider the problem of designing the equation coefficient vector for each relay with the objective being maximizing the computation rate at that relay. By taking advantage of some useful properties, we show that the problem can be relaxed to a series of equality-constrained quadratic programmings and their closed-form solutions are derived by use of the Lagrange multiplier method, which is the key to the efficiency of our method. A quantization algorithm is then proposed to transform the real-valued approximations to the set of required integer-valued vectors, from which a suboptimal equation coefficient vector is obtained. Numerical results demonstrate that relative to existing methods, our method can offer comparable performance at an impressively low complexity.
A High-Throughput and Low-Complexity Secure Linear Network Coding Protocol

Abstract:A new scheme providing security against passive attackers in linear network coding is proposed. Throughput efficiency, low algorithm complexity, and high adaptability/applicability are the major design factors that are considered in this security protocol. A bijective permutation map defined over the code field is utilized to generate the randomness that is required for masking the plain information symbols. The input arguments of the permutation map are some of the plain data symbols and one random symbol that is chosen by the source node. It is shown that as long as the attacker does not have access to all the independent channels, he can not obtain any linear combination of the plain information symbols. Reducing data throughput by only one unit compared to the non-secure network code, and avoiding the use of complex transformations such as cryptographic algorithms or hash functions are the main advantages of the proposed security protocol.

Abstract:Network coding has been recently proposed in information theory as a new dimension of the information multicast problem that helps achieve optimal transmission rate or cost. End hosts in overlay networks are natural candidates to perform network coding, due to its available computational capabilities. In this paper, we seek to bring theoretical advances in network coding to the practice of high-throughput multicast in overlay networks. We have completed the first real implementation of network coding in end hosts, as well as decentralized algorithms to construct the routing strategies and to perform random code assignment. Our experiences suggest that approaching maximum throughput with network coding is not only theoretically sound, but also practically promising. We also present a number of unique challenges in designing and realizing coded data dissemination, and corresponding solution techniques to address them.
