Abstract:We compute the modifications to the attractor mechanism due to fermionic corrections. In N=2, D=4 supergravity, at the fourth order, we find a new contribution to the horizon values of the scalar fields of the vector multiplets.

Abstract:We provide the metric, the gravitino fields and the gauge fields to all orders in the fermionic zero modes for D=5 and D=4, N=2 gauged supergravity solutions starting from non-extremal AdS--Schwarzschild black holes. We compute the Brown-York stress--energy tensor on the boundary of AdS_5 / AdS_4 spaces and we discuss some implications of the fermionic corrections to perfect fluid interpretation of the boundary theory. The complete non-linear solution, which we denote as fermionic wig, is achieved by acting with supersymmetry transformations upon the supergravity fields and that expansion naturally truncates at some order in the fermionic zero modes.

Abstract:The attractor mechanism in five dimensional Einstein-Maxwell Chern-Simons theory is studied. The expression of the five dimensional rotating black object potential depending on Taub-NUT, electric and magnetic charges as well as on all the scalar and gauge fields, is investigated. The first order formalism in d=5 is constructed and analyzed. We derive a general expression defining the fake superpotential which is valid for all charge configurations. An explicit expression for the fake superpotential is constructed, for all very special geometries, in the case of vanishing Taub-NUT charge. We carry out an analogous construction in the very special geometries corresponding to $t^3$ and $stu$ models, for the most general charge configurations. The attractor flows and horizon values of all fields are given.

Abstract:A new nonperturbative approach is used to investigate the Gross-Neveu model of four fermion interaction in the space-time dimensions 2, 3 and 4, the number $N$ of inner degrees of freedom being a fixed integer. The spontaneous symmetry breaking is shown to exist in $D=2,3$ and the running coupling constant is calculated. The four dimensional theory seems to be trivial.

Abstract:We reveal the presence of a new source of axial current due to the condensed vacuum generated by the spin-spin interaction. To show this, we consider a quartic Dirac Lagrangian containing a spin-spin interaction term, possibly originating from torsion in Einstein-Cartan-like theories. We use a mean field approach to analyze the quantized theory. We show that the diagonalization of the field Hamiltonian defines a new vacuum state, energetically favored with respect to the free vacuum. Such a vacuum, which is a condensate of particle-antiparticle pairs, is characterized by a nontrivial expectation value of the axial current operator. The new source of axial current, here obtained, can have effects both at the atomic level and at the astrophysical-cosmological level depending on the origin of the spin-spin interaction term. The condensate spontaneously breaks Lorentz symmetry, therefore it implies the possibility of CPT violation in the early universe. Furthermore the condensate induces a new source term in the gravitational field equations and may affect the dark sector of the universe at cosmological level.

Fermions hard scattering from superstrings

Abstract:We study high-energy scattering at fixed angle in the planar limit of non-Abelian gauge field theories from type IIB superstring theory scattering amplitudes. Firstly, we consider four-glueball scattering described in terms of the four-dilaton string theory scattering amplitude. We explicitly calculate some angular integrals of four scalar spherical harmonics on the five sphere leading to selection rules for several scattering processes. Then, we consider the high-energy limit of the four-dilatino scattering amplitude in type IIB superstring theory, which allows to describe four spin-1/2 fermions scattering in the dual gauge field theory. In both cases the partonic structure of the scattering cross sections is obtained. The Regge behavior is also obtained. In addition, we study certain related aspects by considering the effective action constructed from IIB supergravity.

Abstract:For a fermionic quantum field theory in $d=1+1$ dimensions, there is a subtle difference between summing over spin structures and gauging $(-1)^F$. If the gravitational anomaly vanishes mod 16, then both operations are equivalent and yield a bosonic theory. But if the gravitational anomaly only vanishes mod 8, then only gauging $(-1)^F$ is allowed, and the result is a fermionic theory. Our goal is to understand in detail how this happens, despite the fact $(-1)^F$ is defined in terms of shifting the spin structure, which would naïvely suggest that both operations are equivalent. We do this from three perspectives: an abstract view in terms of anomalies, explicit CFT calculations, and a Symmetry TFT perspective. To conclude, we illustrate our results using the heterotic string and the famous self-triality of 8 Majorana-Weyl fermions.

Fermionic quartet and vestigial gravity

Abstract:We discuss the two-step transitions in superconductors, where the intermediate state between the Cooper pair state and the normal metal is the 4-fermion condensate, which is called the intertwined vestigial order. We discuss different types of the vestigial order, which are possible in the spin-triplet superfluid $^3$He, and the topological objects in the vestigial phases. Since in $^3$He the order parameter $A_{\alpha i}$ represents the analog of gravitational tetrads, we suggest that the vestigial states are possible in quantum gravity. As in superconductors, the fermionic vacuum can experience two consequent phase transitions. At first transition the metric appears as the bilinear combination of tetrads $g_{\mu\nu} =\eta_{ab}< \hat E^a_\mu \hat E^b_\nu>$, while the tetrad order parameter is still absent, $e_\mu^a=< \hat E^a_\mu> =0$. This corresponds to the bosonic Einstein general relativity, which emerges in the fermionic vacuum. The nonzero tetrads $e_\mu^a=< \hat E^a_\mu> \neq 0$ appear at the second transition, where a kind of the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble tetrad gravity is formed. This suggests that on the levels of particles, gravity acts with different strength on fermions and bosons.

Abstract:Correlation functions are important probes for the behavior of quantum field theories. Already at tree-level, the Refined Gribov Zwanziger (RGZ) effective action for Yang-Mills theories provides a good approximation for the gluon propagator, as compared to that calculated by nonperturbative methods such as Lattice Field Theory and Dyson-Schwinger Equations. However, the study of higher correlation functions of the RGZ theory is still at its beginning. In this work we evaluate the ghost-antighost-gluon vertex function in Landau gauge at one-loop level, in $d=4$ space-time dimensions for the gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3). More precisely, we extend the analysis conducted in [1] for the soft-gluon limit to an arbitrary kinematic configuration. We introduce renormalization group effects by means of a toy model for the running coupling and investigate the impact of such a model in the ultraviolet tails of our results. We find that RGZ results match fairly closely those from lattice simulations, Schwinger-Dyson equations and the Curci-Ferrari model for three different kinematic configurations. This is compatible with RGZ being a feasible theory for the strong interaction in the infrared regime.

Fermion production at the boundary of an expanding universe: a cold-atom gravitational analogue

Abstract:We study the phenomenon of cosmological particle production of Dirac fermions in a Friedman-Robertson-Walker spacetime, focusing on a (1+1)-dimensional case in which the evolution of the scale factor is set by the equations of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity. As a first step towards a quantum simulation of this phenomenon, we consider two possible lattice regularizations, which allow us to explore the interplay of particle production and topological phenomena in spacetimes with a boundary. In particular, for a Wilson-type discretization of the Dirac field, the asymptotic Minkowski vacua connected by the intermediate expansion corresponds to symmetry-protected topological groundstates, and have a boundary manifestation in the form of zero-modes exponentially localized to the spatial boundaries. We show that particle production can also populate these zero modes, which contrasts with the situation with a naïve-fermion discretization, in which conformal zero-mass fields exhibit no particle production. We present a scheme for the quantum simulation of this gravitational analogue by means of ultra-cold atoms in Raman optical lattices, which requires real-time control of the Raman-beam detuning according to the scale factor of the simulated spacetime, as well as band-mapping measurements.

Abstract:Geometric properties of lattice quantum gravity in two dimensions are studied numerically via Monte Carlo on Euclidean Dynamical Triangulations. A new computational method is proposed to simulate gravity coupled with fermions, which allows the study of interacting theories on a lattice, such as non-Riemannian gravity models. This was tested on Majorana spinors, where we obtained a Hausdorff dimension dH=4.22±0.04 , consistent with the bounds from the literature 4.19 .

Abstract:Electric and magnetic Fayet-Ilioupulous (FI) terms are used to engineer partial breaking of ${\mathcal{N}=2}$ global supersymmetry for systems of vector multiplets. The magnetic FI term induces a deformation of the off-shell field transformations associated with an imaginary constant shift of the triplet of auxiliary fields of the vector multiplet. In this paper, we elaborate on the deformation of off-shell vector multiplets in supergravity, both in components and superspace. In a superconformal framework, the deformations are associated with (composite) linear multiplets. We engineer an off-shell model that exhibits partial local supersymmetry breaking with a zero cosmological constant. This is based on the hyper-dilaton Weyl multiplet introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2203.12203" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2203.12203">arXiv:2203.12203</a>, coupled to the SU(1,1)/U(1) special-Kähler sigma model in a symplectic frame admitting a holomorphic prepotential, with one compensating and one physical vector multiplet, the latter magnetically deformed.

Abstract:The geometry of field space governs on-shell scattering amplitudes. We formulate a geometric description of effective field theories which extends previous results for scalars and gauge fields to fermions. The field-space geometry reorganizes and simplifies the computation of quantum loop corrections. Using this geometric framework, we calculate the fermion loop contributions to the renormalization group equations for bosonic operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory up to mass dimension eight.

The one-loop unimodular graviton propagator in any dimension

Abstract:For unimodular gravity, we work out, by using dimensional regularization, the complete one-loop correction to the graviton propagator in any space-time dimension. The computation is carried out within the framework where unimodular gravity has Weyl invariance in addition to the transverse diffeomorphism gauge symmetry. Thus, no Lagrange multiplier is introduced to enforce the unimodularity condition. The quantization of the theory is carried out by using the BRST framework and there considering a large continuous family of gauge-fixing terms. The BRST formalism is developed in such a way that the set of ghost, {anti-ghost} and auxiliary fields and their BRST changes do not depend on the space-time dimension, as befits dimensional regularization. As an application of our general result, and at D=4, we obtain the renormalized one-loop graviton propagator in the dimensional regularization minimal {subtraction} scheme. We do so by considering two simplifying gauge-fixing choices.

Fermions, boundaries and conformal and chiral anomalies in $d=3,\ 4$ and $5$ dimensions

Abstract:In the presence of boundaries, the quantum anomalies acquire additional boundary terms. In odd dimensions the integrated conformal anomaly, for which the bulk contribution is known to be absent, is non-trivial due to the boundary terms. These terms became a subject of active study in the recent years. In the present paper we continue our previous study [1], [2] and compute explicitly the anomaly for fermions in dimensions $d=3, \ 4 \ $ and $5$. The calculation in dimension $5$ is new. It contains both contributions of the gravitational field and the gauge fields to the anomaly. In dimensions $d=3$ and $4$ we reproduce and clarify the derivation of the results available in the literature. Imposing the conformal invariant mixed boundary conditions for fermions in odd dimension $d$ we particularly pay attention to the necessity of choosing the doubling representation for gamma matrices. In this representation there exists a possibility to define chirality and thus address the question of the chiral anomaly. The anomaly is entirely due to terms defined on the boundary. They are calculated in the present paper in dimensions $d=3$ and $5$ due to both gravitational and gauge fields. To complete the picture we re-evaluate the chiral anomaly in $d=4$ dimensions and find a new boundary term that is supplementary to the well-known Pontryagin term.

Abstract:We use equivariant localization to construct off-shell entropy functions for supersymmetric black holes in $\mathcal{N}=2$, $D=4$ gauged supergravity coupled to matter. This allows one to compute the black hole entropy without solving the supergravity equations of motion and provides a novel generalization of the attractor mechanism. We consider magnetically charged black holes in $AdS_4$ which have an $AdS_2\times M_2$ near horizon geometry, where $M_2$ is a sphere or a spindle, and we also obtain entropy functions for ungauged supergravity as a simple corollary. We derive analogous results for black strings and rings in $D=5$ supergravity which have an $AdS_3\times M_2$ near horizon geometry, and in this setting we derive an off-shell expression for the central charge of the dual $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$, $d=2$~SCFT.

Abstract:We present a new non-perturbative 't Hooft anomaly afflicting a quantum field theory with symmetry group G = U(1) × Z 2 in four dimensions. We use the Adams spectral sequence to compute that the bordism group ( BG ), which classifies anomalies that remain when perturbative anomalies cancel, is Z 4 . By constructing a mapping torus and evaluating the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer η -invariant, we show that the mod 4 anomaly is generated by a pair of Weyl fermions that are vector-like under U(1), but with only one component charged under Z 2 . We construct a simple microscopic field theory that realises the anomaly, before investigating its impact in the hydrodynamic limit. We find that the anomaly dictates transport phenomena in the U(1) current and energy-momentum tensor akin to the chiral vortical and magnetic effects (even though the perturbative anomalies here vanish), but with the conductivities being fractionally quantised in units of a quarter, reflecting the mod 4 nature of the bordism group. Along the way, we compute the (relevant) bordism groups ( B Z 2 × B U(1)) and ( B U(1)) in all degrees d = 0 through 5.

Schwinger displacement of the quark-gluon vertex

Abstract:The action of the Schwinger mechanism in pure Yang-Mills theories endows gluons with an effective mass, and, at the same time, induces a measurable displacement to the Ward identity satisfied by the three-gluon vertex. In the present work we turn to Quantum Chromodynamics with two light quark flavors, and explore the appearance of this characteristic displacement at the level of the quark-gluon vertex. When the Schwinger mechanism is activated, this vertex acquires massless poles, whose momentum-dependent residues are determined by a set of coupled integral equations. The main effect of these residues is to displace the Ward identity obeyed by the pole-free part of the vertex, causing modifications to its form factors, and especially the one associated with the tree-level tensor. The comparison between the available lattice data for this form factor and the Ward identity prediction reveals a marked deviation, which is completely compatible with the theoretical expectation for the attendant residue. This analysis corroborates further the self-consistency of this mass-generating scenario in the general context of real-world strong interactions.

On the fermionic van der Waals and Casimir-Polder interactions

Abstract:We formulate fermionic versions, for any number of spatial dimensions, of the van der Waals and Casimir-Polder interactions, and study their properties. In both cases, the systems we introduce contain localized `atoms': two-level systems, coupled to a vacuum Dirac field. This Dirac field plays here a role akin to the electromagnetic field in the van der Waals case. In this context, bag-model conditions for the Dirac field serve as the analog of the 'mirror' in the Casimir-Polder effect. We found that, in this case, the resulting interaction is repulsive.
