Abstract:In order to reject the notion that information is always about something, the "It from Bit" idea relies on the nonexistence of a realistic framework that might underly quantum theory. This essay develops the case that there is a plausible underlying reality: one actual spacetime-based history, although with behavior that appears strange when analyzed dynamically (one time-slice at a time). By using a simple model with no dynamical laws, it becomes evident that this behavior is actually quite natural when analyzed "all-at-once" (as in classical statistical mechanics). The "It from Bit" argument against a spacetime-based reality must then somehow defend the importance of dynamical laws, even as it denies a reality on which such fundamental laws could operate.

Abstract:Based on a synthesis of three main ingredients: (i) the Shannon information in nonequilibrium systems, (ii) the semiclassical energy-time quantization rule, and (iii) the quasistatic information-energy correspondence, a new general rule for the quantization of quasistatic information states supported by an environment away from equilibrium is introduced if the history of the environment is known as a function of time in terms of its thermodynamic potential for information $T(t)\Delta S(t)$ that is a free energy measuring the distance from equilibrium $\Delta S(t)$, and $T(t)$ is the mean temperature of the environment at time $t$. This all new quasistatic information-time quantization rule is applied to the expanding universe using a phenomenological thermodynamic potential for information in the matter dominated era in order to find the eigen-informations of the persistent structures that are supported by the universe (or the local environments therein) at any given epoch, thus providing an information-theoretic foundation for formation of structures and rise of complexity with time that embodies the cosmic evolution as epitomized by the late Wheeler's famous conjecture ``{\it it from bit}". This theoretical procedure must also open new avenues for further research into the quantum theory of information and complexity in nonequilibrium thermodynamics.

Abstract:Using information technology, humans have brought about the Information Revolution, which is changing the world faster and more profoundly than ever before. How is this possible? An answer is suggested by comments of James Moor, regarding Logical Malleability, in his classic paper, What Is Computer Ethics?, 1985. The present essay combines Moor's ideas with the hypothesis that all physical entities, including spacetime and the universe as a whole, are dynamic data structures. To show the usefulness of taking such an approach, in both physics and information ethics, a suggested it from bit model of the universe is briefly sketched, and relevant predictions are offered about the future of computer and information ethics.

Abstract:I discuss several aspects of information theory and its relationship to physics and neuroscience. The unifying thread of this somewhat chaotic essay is the concept of Kolmogorov or algorithmic complexity (Kolmogorov Complexity, for short). I argue that it is natural to interpret cognition as the art of finding algorithms that apprach the Solomonoff-Kolmogorov-Chaitin (algorithmic) Complexity limit with appropriate tradeoffs. In addition, I claim that what we call the universe is an interpreted abstraction--a mental construct--based on the observed coherence between multiple sensory input streams and our own interactions. Hence, the notion of Universe is itself a model.

Abstract:Given an equivalence relation ~ on a set U, there are two abstract notions of an element of the quotient set U/~. The #1 abstract notion is a set S=[u] of equivalent elements of U (an equivalence class); the #2 notion is an abstract entity u_{S} that is definite on what is common to the elements of the equivalence class S but is otherwise indefinite on the differences between those elements. For instance, the #1 interpretation of a homotopy type is an equivalence class of homotopic spaces, but the #2 interpretation, e.g., as developed in homotopy type theory, is an abstract space (without points) that has the properties that are in common to the spaces in the equivalence class but is otherwise indefinite. In philosophy, the #2 abstract entities might be called paradigm-universals, e.g., `the white thing' as opposed to the #1 abstract notion of "the set of white things" (out of some given collection U). The paper shows how this #2 notion of a paradigm may be mathematically modeled using incidence matrices in Boolean logic and density matrices in probability theory. Then we cross the bridge to the density matrix treatment of the indefinite superposition states in quantum mechanics (QM). This connection between the #2 abstracts in mathematics and ontic indefinite states in QM elucidates Abner Shimony's literal or objective indefiniteness interpretation of QM.

Abstract:Is our world just information? We argue that our current notion of information has one serious shortcoming: It is quite literally meaningless. We suggest a meaningful extension of the notion of information that is dynamic, internal, approximate, contains an element of randomness, and is layered. This new notion of information derives from the interactions of material objects. Our answer to the essay question then is Bit from It or, more appropriately, Bit++ from It. We discuss how our new notion of information sheds light on the measurement problem in quantum mechanics and how it can be applied in philosophy and computer science.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics is a theory that is as effective as it is counterintuitive. While quantum practices operate impeccably, they compel us to embrace enigmatic phenomena like the collapse of the state vector and non-locality, thereby pushing us towards untenable "hypotheses non fingo" stances. However, a century after its inception, we are presented with a promising interpretive key, intimated by Wheeler as early as 1974. The interpretative paradoxes of this theory might be resolved if we discern the relationship between logical undecidability and quantum undecidability. It will be demonstrated how both are intricately linked to an observer/observed relational issue, and how the idiosyncratic behaviours of quantum physics can be reconciled with the normative, following this path.

Although popular at times, the most radical forms of this idea never reached mainstream. Abstract:I reassess the gedankenexperiment of Greenberger, Horne, Shimony and Zeilinger after twenty-five years, finding their influential claim to discovery of an inconsistency inherent in high dimensional formulations of local realism to arise from a fundamental error of logic. They manage this by presuming contradictory premises: that a specific linear combination of four angles involved in their proposed parallel experiments on two pairs of electrons equals both $\pi$ and $0$ at the same time. Ignoring this while presuming the contradictory implications of these two conditions, they introduce the contradiction themselves. The notation they use in their "derivation" is not sufficiently ornate to represent the entanglement in the double electron spin pair problem they design, confounding their error. The situation they propose actually motivates only an understanding of the full array of symmetries involved in their problem. In tandem with the error now recognized in the supposed defiance of Bell's inequality by quantum probabilities, my reassessment of their work should motivate a reevaluation of the current consensus outlook regarding the principle of local realism and the proposition of hidden variables.

Abstract:Broadly speaking Information theory (IT) assumes no structure of the underlying states. But what about contexts where states do have a clear structure - how should IT cope with such situations? And if such coping is at all possible then - how should structure be expressed so that it can be coped with? A possible answer to these questions is presented here. Noting that IT can cope well with a structure expressed as an accurate clustering (by shifting to the implied reduced alphabet), a generalization is suggested in which structure is expressed as a measure on reduced alphabets. Given such structure an extension of IT is presented where the reduced alphabets are treated simultaneously. This structure-sensitive IT, called ITs, extends traditional IT in the sense that: a)there are structure-sensitive analogs to the notions of traditional IT and b)translating a theorem in IT by replacing its notions with their structure-sensitive counterparts, yields a (provable) theorem of ITs. Seemingly paradoxically, ITs extends IT but it's completely within the framework of IT. The richness of the suggested structures is demonstrated by two disparate families studied in more detail: the family of hierarchical structures and the family of linear structures. The formal findings extend the scope of cases to which a rigorous application of IT can be applied (with implications on quantization, for example). The implications on the foundations of IT are that the assumption regarding no underlying structure of states is not mandatory and that there is a framework for expressing such underlying structure.
Bit symmetry entails the symmetry of the quantum transition probability

Abstract:It is quite common to use the generalized probabilistic theories (GPTs) as generic models to reconstruct quantum theory from a few basic principles and to gain a better understanding of the probabilistic or information theoretic foundations of quantum physics and quantum computing. A variety of symmetry postulates was introduced and studied in this framework, including the transitivity of the automorphism group (1) on the pure states, (2) on the pairs of orthogonal pure states [these pairs are called 2-frames] and (3) on any frames of the same size. The second postulate is Müller and Ududec's bit symmetry, which they motivate by quantum computational needs. Here we explore these three postulates in the transition probability framework, which is more specific than the GPTs since the existence of the transition probabilities for the quantum logical atoms is presupposed either directly or indirectly via a certain geometric property of the state space. This property for compact convex sets was introduced by the author in a recent paper. We show that bit symmetry implicates the symmetry of the transition probabilities between the atoms. Using a result by Barnum and Hilgert, we can then conclude that the third rather strong symmetry postulate rules out all models but the classical cases and in the simple Euclidean Jordan algebras.

Abstract:The argument of this article is threefold. First, the article argues that from its rise in the sixteenth century to our own time, the advancement of modern physics as mathematical-experimental science has been defined by the invention of new mathematical structures. Second, the article argues that quantum theory, especially following quantum mechanics, gives this thesis a radically new meaning by virtue of the following two features: on the one hand, quantum phenomena are defined as essentially different from those found in all previous physics by purely physical features; and on the other, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory are defined by purely mathematical postulates, which connect them to quantum phenomena strictly in terms of probabilities, without, as in all previous physics, representing or otherwise relating to how these phenomena physically come about. While these two features may appear discordant, if not inconsistent, I argue that they are in accord with each other, at least in certain interpretations (including the one adopted here), designated as "reality without realism", RWR, interpretations. This argument also allows this article to offer a new perspective on a thorny problem of the relationships between continuity and discontinuity in quantum physics. In particular, rather than being concerned only with the discreteness and continuity of quantum objects or phenomena, quantum mechanics and quantum field theory relate their continuous mathematics to the irreducibly discrete quantum phenomena in terms of probabilistic predictions while, at least in RWR interpretations, precluding a representation or even conception of how these phenomena come about. This subject is rarely, if ever, discussed apart from previous work by the present author. It is, however, given a new dimension in this article which introduces, as one of its main contributions, a new principle: the mathematical complexity principle.

Abstract:The quantum world is described by a unit vector in the Hilbert space and the Hamiltonian. Do they, as abstract basis-independent objects, give a complete description of the physical world, or should we include observables like positions and momenta and the decomposition into subsystems? According to "Hilbert-space fundamentalism" they give a complete description, and all other features of the physical world emerge from them (Carroll, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2103.09780" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2103.09780">arXiv:2103.09780</a>). This thesis was previously refuted in (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2102.08620" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2102.08620">arXiv:2102.08620</a>) in full generality. But being an abstract non-uniqueness proof, and not a constructive one, it may not be convincing enough to the busy reader who wants to avoid mathematical details. Here I give a simpler, intuitive and constructive refutation, by showing that concrete physically distinct worlds can be described by the same unit vector and evolve according to the same law.

Abstract:We take our world to be an objective reality, but is it? The assumption that the physical world exists in and of itself has struggled to assimilate the findings of modern physics for some time now. For example, an objective space and time would just "be", but in relativity, space contracts and time dilates. Likewise objective "things" should just inherently exist, but the entities of quantum theory are probability of existence smears, that spread, tunnel, superpose and entangle in physically impossible ways. Cosmology even tells us that our entire physical universe just "popped up", from nowhere, about 14 billion years ago. This is not how an objectively real world should behave! Yet traditional alternatives don't work much better. That the world is just an illusion of the mind doesn't explain its consistent realism and Descartes dualism, that another reality beyond the physical exists, just doubles the existential problem. It is time to consider an option we might normally dismiss out of hand. This essay explores the virtual reality conjecture, that the physical world is the digital output of non-physical quantum processing. It finds it neither illogical, nor unscientific, nor incompatible with current physics. In this model, quantum entities are programs, movement is the transfer of processing, interactions are processing overloads and the fields of physics are network properties. It has no empty space, no singularities and all the conservations of physics just conserve processing. Its prediction, that the collision of high frequency light in a vacuum can create permanent matter, will test it. If the physical world has the properties of a processing output, physics must rewrite the story behind its equations.

Generalized Von Neumann Universe and Non-Well-Founded Sets

Abstract:In this paper, a generalized version of the von Neumann universe known as the total universe is proposed to formally introduce non-well-founded sets that include infinitons, semi-infinitons and quasi-infinitons in Russell's paradox. All three infinitons are part of infinitely generated sets that are generators of non-well-founded sets. The total universe combines the well-founded sets with the non-well-founded ones and turns out to be a model of ZF minus the axiom of regularity, which can be shown invalid in defining the well-founded sets. Also, the total universe is shown to be free of Russell's paradox.

Abstract:The extravagances of quantum mechanics never fail to enrich daily the debate around natural philosophy. Entanglement, non-locality, collapse, many worlds, many minds, and subjectivism have challenged generations of thinkers. Its approach can perhaps be placed in the stream of quantum logic, in which the "strangeness" of quantum mechanics is "measured" through the violation of Bell's inequalities and, from there, attempts an interpretative path that preserves realism yet ends up overturning it, restating the fundamental mechanisms of QM as a logical necessity for a strong realism.
