Abstract:This is a gentle introduction to Colombeau nonlinear generalized functions, a generalization of the concept of distributions such that distributions can freely be multiplied. It is intended to physicists and applied mathematicians who prefer a `step-by-step approach' to a `top-down indoctrination.' No particular prerequisite knowledge is necessary -- and in less than one hour you should know everything you need to know and were afraid to ask about Colombeau algebras and their applications in physics... A selected bibliography is appended, giving examples of applications to partial differential and wave equations, electrodynamics, hydrodynamics, general relativity, and quantum field theory.

Abstract:We study symplectic linear algebra over the ring of Colombeau generalized numbers. Due to the algebraic properties of it is possible to preserve a number of central results of classical symplectic linear algebra. In particular, we construct symplectic bases for any symplectic form on a free -module of finite rank. Further, we consider the general problem of eigenvalues for matrices over (𝕂 = ℝ or ℂ) and derive normal forms for Hermitian and skew-symmetric matrices. Our investigations are motivated by applications in non-smooth symplectic geometry and the theory of Fourier integral operators with non-smooth symbols.

Abstract:We offer an axiomatic definition of a differential algebra of generalized functions over an algebraically closed non-Archimedean field. This algebra is of Colombeau type in the sense that it contains a copy of the space of Schwartz distributions. We study the uniqueness of the objects we define and the consistency of our axioms. Next, we identify an inconsistency in the conventional Laplace transform theory. As an application we offer a free of contradictions alternative in the framework of our algebra of generalized functions. The article is aimed at mathematicians, physicists and engineers who are interested in the non-linear theory of generalized functions, but who are not necessarily familiar with the original Colombeau theory. We assume, however, some basic familiarity with the Schwartz theory of distributions.

Abstract:Let F be a function field in two variables over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. The main part of this Bourbaki talk describes A. J. de Jong's proof (Duke Math. J. 123 (2004) 71-94) that index and exponent coincide for central simple algebras over F. The text follows the simplified approach sketched at the end of de Jong's paper. Applications to linear algebraic groups are given. A last section surveys results on the comparison between index and exponent for central simple algebras over a function field in one variable over a p-adic field, with application to the isotropy of quadratic forms over such fields. ----- `A toute classe dans le groupe de Brauer d'un corps F sont associ'es deux entiers, l'indice (degr'e d'un corps gauche repr'esentant la classe) et l'exposant (ordre de la classe dans le groupe de Brauer). L'exposant divise l'indice, mais ne lui est pas n'ecessairement 'egal. Lorsque F est un corps de nombres, c'est un th'eor`eme des ann'ees 1930 qu'exposant et indice coincident. A. J. de Jong (Duke Math. J. 123 (2004) 71-94) a montr'e r'ecemment qu'ils coincident aussi lorsque F est un corps de fonctions de deux variables sur le corps des complexes. On donne ensuite quelques cons'equences pour les groupes lin'eaires. Un dernier paragraphe passe en revue des r'esultats comparant exposant et indice pour les corps de fonctions d'une variable sur les corps p-adiques, avec application `a l'isotropie des formes quadratiques sur de tels corps.

Abstract:A differential algebra of nonlinear generalized functions is presented as a tool for a wide range of nonsmooth nonlinear problems. The power of the differential algebra is used to do mathematical calculations or proofs; then the final result is often a classical function or distribution which is not solution in the classical or distributional sense. The aim of this text is to invite the readers in applying this tool in their own research without significant prerequisites by presenting its use on a sample of elementary applications from mathematics and physics. This text is the written version of a talk at the 2007 annual meeting of the AMS, NewOrleans, january 2007.

Abstract:Narrow s-wave features with subthermal widths are predicted for the ^1Pi_g photoassociation spectra of cold alkaline earth atoms. The phenomenon is explained by numerical and analytical calculations. These show that only a small subthermal range of collision energies near threshold contributes to the s-wave features that are excited when the atoms are very far apart. The resonances survive thermal averaging, and may be detectable for Ca cooled near the Doppler cooling temperature of the 4^1P <- 4^1S laser cooling transition.

Abstract:This book is an introductory course to basic commutative algebra with a particular emphasis on finitely generated projective modules, which constitutes the algebraic version of the vector bundles in differential geometry. We adopt the constructive point of view, with which all existence theorems have an explicit algorithmic content. In particular, when a theorem affirms the existence of an object -- the solution of a problem -- a construction algorithm of the object can always be extracted from the given proof. We revisit with a new and often simplifying eye several abstract classical theories. In particular, we review theories which did not have any algorithmic content in their general natural framework, such as Galois theory, the Dedekind rings, the finitely generated projective modules or the Krull dimension. Constructive algebra is actually an old discipline, developed among others by Gauss and Kronecker. We are in line with the modern "bible" on the subject, which is the book by Ray Mines, Fred Richman and Wim Ruitenburg, A Course in Constructive Algebra, published in 1988.

Abstract:Inspired by the commutator and anticommutator algebras derived from algebras graded by groups, we introduce noncommutatively graded algebras. We generalize various classical graded results to the noncommutatively graded situation concerning identity elements, inverses, existence of limits and colimits and adjointness of certain functors. In the particular instance of noncommutatively graded Lie algebras, we establish the existence of universal graded enveloping algebras and we show a graded version of the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem.

Abstract:It is often noted that many of the basic concepts of differential geometry, such as the definition of connection, are purely algebraic in nature. Here, we review and extend existing work on fully algebraic formulations of differential geometry which eliminate the need for an underlying manifold. While the literature contains various independent approaches to this, we focus on one particular approach that we argue to be the most natural one based on the definition of \emph{algebraifold}, by which we mean a commutative algebra $\mathcal{A}$ for which the module of derivations of $\mathcal{A}$ is finitely generated projective. Over $\mathbb{R}$ as the base ring, this class of algebras includes the algebra $C^\infty(M)$ of smooth functions on a manifold $M$, and similarly for analytic functions. An importantly different example is the Colombeau algebra of generalized functions on $M$, which makes distributional differential geometry an instance of our formalism. Another instance is a fibred version of smooth differential geometry, since any smooth submersion $M \to N$ makes $C^\infty(M)$ into an algebraifold with $C^\infty(N)$ as the base ring.Over any field $k$ of characteristic zero, examples include the algebra of regular functions on a smooth affine variety as well as any function field.

Abstract:We provide sufficient conditions of local solvability for partial differential operators with variable Colombeau coefficients. We mainly concentrate on operators which admit a right generalized pseudodifferential parametrix and on operators which are a bounded perturbation of a differential operator with constant Colombeau coefficients. The local solutions are intended in the Colombeau algebra $\G(\Om)$ as well as in the dual $\LL(\Gc(\Om),\wt{\C})$.

Abstract:We begin with a short presentation of the basic concepts related to Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids, but the main part of this paper deals with Lie algebroids. A Lie algebroid over a manifold is a vector bundle over that manifold whose properties are very similar to those of a tangent bundle. Its dual bundle has properties very similar to those of a cotangent bundle: in the graded algebra of sections of its external powers, one can define an operator similar to the exterior derivative. We present the theory of Lie derivatives, Schouten-Nijenhuis brackets and exterior derivatives in the general setting of a Lie algebroid, its dual bundle and their exterior powers. All the results (which, for their most part, are already known) are given with detailed proofs. In the final sections, the results are applied to Poisson manifolds, whose links with Lie algebroids are very close.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish a suitable version of the Hahn-Banach theorem within the framework of Colombeau spaces, a class of spaces used to model generalized functions. Our approach addresses the case where maps are defined $\varepsilon$-wise, which simplifies the framework and makes the extension of linear functionals more manageable. As an application of our main result, we demonstrate the separation of convex sets in Colombeau spaces.
