Abstract:We study the intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) dynamics of an effective spectroscopic Hamiltonian describing the four coupled high frequency modes of CDBrClF. The IVR dynamics ensuing from nearly isoenergetic zeroth-order states, an edge (overtone) and an interior (combination) state, is studied from a state space diffusion perspective. A wavelet based time-frequency analysis reveals an inhomogeneous phase space due to the trapping of classical trajectories. Consequently the interior state has a smaller effective IVR dimension as compared to the edge state.

Scaling Procedures in Vibrational Spectroscopy

Abstract:This chapter contains a brief review of the up-to-date scaling procedures that are used in the computational vibrational spectroscopy to improve agreement between the calculated harmonic frequencies and the observed fundamentals. Initially, the basics of vibrational spectroscopy are reminded. This includes the concept of potential energy surface, harmonic approximation, and a basic quantum chemistry treatment of the anharmonicity for a diatomic molecule. Brief description of the Wilson–Decius–Cross method for polyatomic molecules is also presented. Then the commonly used scaling procedures are discussed. The distinction between single- and multi-parameter scaling procedures is made. Four scaling procedures are reviewed. First, Pople’s uniform scaling is presented. Second, Yoshida’s wavenumber linear scaling method is discussed. Both methods are simple single-parameter frequency scaling methods. Then basics of two multi-parameter scaling methods, which are much more accurate but less straightforward to use, are given. Thus, Pulay’s scaled quantum mechanical force field method, in which scaling factors are applied directly to the calculated force constants is reviewed. Finally, introduction to quite recently proposed multi-parameter frequency scaling method, called effective scaling frequency factor method, is provided. The relevant sections start with a short description of the theory for a given method. Then a brief literature review on the historical background of methodology development is given.
Perspectives on scaling and multiscaling in passive scalar turbulence

Abstract:We revisit the well-known problem of multiscaling in substances passively advected by homogeneous and isotropic turbulent flows or passive scalar turbulence. To that end we propose a two-parameter continuum hydrodynamic model for an advected substance concentration $\theta$, parametrised jointly by $y$ and $\overline y$, that characterise the spatial scaling behaviour of the variances of the advecting stochastic velocity and the stochastic additive driving force, respectively. We analyse it within a one-loop dynamic renormalisation group method to calculate the multiscaling exponents of the equal-time structure functions of $\theta$. We show how the interplay between the advective velocity and the additive force may lead to simple scaling or multiscaling. In one limit, our results reduce to the well-known results from the Kraichnan model for passive scalar. Our framework of analysis should be of help for analytical approaches for the still intractable problem of fluid turbulence itself.

Scaling-up VPT2: A feasible route to include anharmonic correction on large molecules

Abstract:Vibrational analysis plays a crucial role in the investigation of molecular systems. Though methodologies like second-order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) have paved the way to more accurate simulations, the computational cost remains a difficult barrier to overcome when the molecular size increases. Building upon recent advances in the identification of resonances, we propose an approach making anharmonic simulations possible for large-size systems, typically unreachable by standard means. This relies on the fact that, often, only portions of the whole spectra are of actual interest. Therefore, the anharmonic corrections can be included selectively on subsets of normal modes directly related to the regions of interest. Starting from the VPT2 equations, we evaluate rigorously and systematically the impact of the truncated anharmonic treatment onto simulations. The limit and feasibility of the reduced-dimensionality approach are detailed, starting on a smaller model system. The methodology is then challenged on the IR absorption and vibrational circular dichroism spectra of an organometallic complex in three different spectral ranges.
Quantum resource-theoretical analysis of the role of vibrational structure in photoisomerization

Abstract:Thermodynamical systems at the nanoscale, such as single molecules interacting with highly structured vibrational environments, typically undergo non-equilibrium physical processes that lack precise microscopic descriptions. Photoisomerization is such an example which has emerged as a platform on which to study single-molecule ultrafast photochemical processes from a quantum resource theoretic perspective. However, upper bounds on its efficiency have only been obtained under significant simplifications that make the mathematics of the resource-theoretical treatment manageable. Here we generalize previous models for the photoisomers, while retaining the full vibrational structure, and still get analytical bounds on the efficiency of hotoisomerization. We quantify the impact of such vibrational structure on the optimal photoisomerization quantum yield both when the vibrational coordinate has no dynamics of its own and when we take into account the vibrational dynamics. This work serves as an example of how to bridge the gap between the abstract language of quantum resource theories and the open system formulation of nanoscale processes.

Near- and long-term quantum algorithmic approaches for vibrational spectroscopy

Abstract:Determining the vibrational structure of a molecule is central to fundamental applications in several areas, from atmospheric science to catalysis, fuel combustion modeling, biochemical imaging, and astrochemistry. However, when significant anharmonicity and mode coupling are present, the problem is classically intractable for a molecule of just a few atoms. Here, we outline a set of quantum algorithms for solving the molecular vibrational structure problem for both near- and long-term quantum computers. There are previously unaddressed characteristics of this problem which require approaches distinct from most instances of the commonly studied quantum simulation of electronic structure: many eigenstates are often desired, states of interest are often far from the ground state (requiring methods for "zooming in" to some energy window), and transition amplitudes with respect to a non-unitary Hermitian operator must be calculated. We address these hurdles and consider problem instances of four molecular vibrational Hamiltonians. Finally and most importantly, we give analytical and numerical results which suggest that, to a given energy precision, a vibrational problem instance will be simulatable on a quantum computer before an electronic structure problem instance. These results imply that more focus in the quantum information community ought to shift toward scientifically and industrially important quantum vibrational problems.

Abstract:ConspectusThe role of quantum mechanical coherences or coherent superposition states in excited state processes has received considerable attention in the last two decades largely due to advancements in ultrafast laser spectroscopy. These coherence effects hold promise for enhancing the efficiency and robustness of functionally relevant processes, even when confronted with energy disorder and environmental fluctuations. Understanding coherence deeply drives us to unravel mechanisms and dynamics controlled by order and synchronization at a quantum mechanical level, envisioning optical control of coherence to enhance functions or create new ones in molecular and material systems. In this frontier, the interplay between electronic and vibrational dynamics, specifically the influence of vibrations in directing electronic dynamics, has emerged as the leading principle. Here, two energetically disparate quantum degrees of freedom work in-sync to dictate the trajectory of an excited state reaction. Moreover, with the vibrational degree being directly related to the structural composition of molecular or material systems, new molecular designs could be inspired by tailoring certain structural elements.In the realm of chemical kinetics, our understanding of the dynamics of chemical transformations is underpinned by fundamental theories, such as transition state theory, activated rate theory, and Marcus theory. These theories elucidate reaction rates by considering the energy barriers that must be overcome for reactants to transform into products. Those barriers are surmounted by the stochastic nature of energy gap fluctuations within reacting systems, emphasizing that the reaction coordinate, the pathway from reactants to products, is not rigidly defined by a specific vibrational motion but encompasses a diverse array of molecular motions. While less is known about the involvement of specific intramolecular vibrational modes, their significance in certain cases cannot be overlooked.In this Account, we summarize key experimental findings that offer deeper insights into the complex electronic-vibrational trajectories encompassing excited states afforded from state-of-the-art ultrafast laser spectroscopy in three exemplary processes: photoinduced electron transfer, singlet-triplet intersystem crossing, and intramolecular vibrational energy flow in molecular systems. We delve into the rapid decoherence, or loss of phase and amplitude correlations, of vibrational coherences along promoter vibrations during subpicosecond intersystem crossing dynamics in a series of binuclear platinum complexes. This rapid decoherence illustrates the vibration-driven reactive pathways from the Franck-Condon state to the curve crossing region. We also explore the generation of new vibrational coherences induced by impulsive reaction dynamics rather than by the laser pulse in these systems, which sheds light on specific energy dissipation pathways and thereby on the progression of the reaction trajectory in the vicinity of the curve crossing on the product side. Another property of vibrational coherences, amplitude, reveals how energy can flow from one vibration to another in the electronic excited state of a terpyridine-molybdenum complex hosting a nonreactive dinitrogen substrate. A slight change in vibrational energy triggers a quasi-resonant interaction, leading to constructive wavepacket interference and ultimately intramolecular vibrational redistribution from a Franck-Condon active terpyridine vibration to a dinitrogen stretching vibration, energizing the dinitrogen bond.
Vibrational Heat Transport in Molecular Junctions

Abstract:We review studies of vibrational energy transfer in a molecular junction geometry, consisting of a molecule bridging two heat reservoirs, solids or large chemical compounds. This setup is of interest for applications in molecular electronics, thermoelectrics, and nanophononics, and for addressing basic questions in the theory of classical and quantum transport. Calculations show that system size, disorder, structure, dimensionality, internal anharmonicities, contact interaction, and quantum coherent effects, are factors that interplay to determine the predominant mechanism (ballistic/diffusive), effectiveness (poor/good) and functionality (linear/nonlinear) of thermal conduction at the nanoscale. We review recent experiments and relevant calculations of quantum heat transfer in molecular junctions. We recount the Landauer approach, appropriate for the study of elastic (harmonic) phononic transport, and outline techniques which incorporate molecular anharmonicities. Theoretical methods are described along with examples illustrating the challenge of reaching control over vibrational heat conduction in molecules.

Obscured and unobscured AGN populations in a hard-X-ray selected sample of the XMDS survey

Abstract:Our goal is to probe the populations of obscured and unobscured AGN investigating their optical-IR and X-ray properties as a function of X-ray flux, luminosity and redshift within a hard X-ray selected sample of 136 X-ray sources in the XMM Medium Deep Survey (XMDS) with wide multiwavelength coverage. The XMDS area is covered with optical photometry from the VVDS and CFHTLS surveys and infrared Spitzer data. Based on the X-ray luminosity and X-ray to optical ratio, 132 sources are likely AGN, of which 122 have unambiguous optical - IR identification. The observed optical and IR spectral energy distributions of sources are fitted with AGN/galaxy templates in order to classify them and compute photometric redshifts. 70% of the AGN are fitted by a type 2 AGN or a star forming galaxy template and are grouped together in a single class of ``optically obscured'' AGN. They have ``red'' optical colors and generally show significant X-ray absorption from X-ray spectra or hardness ratios (N$_H > 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$). Sources with SEDs typical of type 1 AGN have ``blue'' optical colors and exhibit X-ray absorption in about 30% of cases. We performed a stacking analysis for obscured and type 1 AGN. The stacked X-ray spectrum of obscured AGN is flatter than that of type 1 AGN and has an average spectral slope of Gamma = 1.6. The subsample of objects fitted by a galaxy template has an even harder stacked spectrum, with Gamma = 1.2 - 1.3. The obscured fraction is larger at lower fluxes, lower redshifts and lower luminosities. X-ray absorption is less common than ``optical'' obscuration and its incidence is nearly constant with redshift and luminosity. This implies that X-ray absorption is not necessarily related to optical obscuration.

Abstract:Infrared spectra for trans‐3‐aminophenol obtained with VCIPSI‐PT2 frequencies with ccCA and B3LYP/aug‐cc‐pVTZ potentials and scaled B3LYP/cc‐pVTZ harmonic frequencies, in comparison to experiment. ccCA anharmonic frequencies are in very good agreement with experiment. Vibrational spectroscopy enables critical insight into the structural and dynamic properties of molecules. Presently, the majority of theoretical approaches to spectroscopy employ wavefunction‐based ab initio or density functional methods that rely on the harmonic approximation. This approximation breaks down for large molecules with strongly anharmonic bonds or for molecules with large internuclear separations. An alternative to these methods involves generating molecular anharmonic potential energy surfaces (potentials) and using them to extrapolate the vibrational frequencies. This study examines the efficacy of density functional theory (DFT) and the correlation consistent Composite Approach (ccCA) in generating anharmonic frequencies from potentials of small main group molecules. Vibrational self‐consistent field Theory (VSCF) and post‐VSCF methods were used to calculate the fundamental frequencies of these molecules from their potentials. Functional choice, basis set selection, and mode‐coupling are also examined as factors in influencing accuracy. The absolute deviations for the calculated frequencies using potentials at the ccCA level of theory were lower than the potentials at the DFT level. With DFT resulting in bending modes that are better described than those of ccCA, a multilevel DFT:ccCA approach where DFT potentials are used for single vibrational mode potentials and ccCA is used for vibrational mode‐mode couplings can be utilized for larger polyatomic systems. The frequencies obtained with this multilevel approach using VCIPSI‐PT2 were closer to experimental frequencies than the scaled harmonic frequencies, indicating the success of utilizing post‐VSCF methods to generate more accurate representations of computed infrared spectra.

Abstract:Recently it has been discovered---contrary to expectations of physicists as well as biologists---that the energy transport during photosynthesis, from the chlorophyll pigment that captures the photon to the reaction centre where glucose is synthesised from carbon dioxide and water, is highly coherent even at ambient temperature and in the cellular environment. This process and the key molecular ingredients that it depends on are described. By looking at the process from the computer science view-point, we can study what has been optimised and how. A spatial search algorithmic model based on robust features of wave dynamics is presented.

Abstract:Vibrational spectroscopy is an essential tool in chemical analyses, biological assays, and studies of functional materials. Over the past decade, various coherent nonlinear vibrational spectroscopic techniques have been developed and enabled researchers to study time-correlations of the fluctuating frequencies that are directly related to solute-solvent dynamics, dynamical changes in molecular conformations and local electrostatic environments, chemical and biochemical reactions, protein structural dynamics and functions, characteristic processes of functional materials, and so on. In order to gain incisive and quantitative information on the local electrostatic environment, molecular conformation, protein structure and interprotein contacts, ligand binding kinetics, and electric and optical properties of functional materials, a variety of vibrational probes have been developed and site-specifically incorporated into molecular, biological, and material systems for time-resolved vibrational spectroscopic investigation. However, still, an all-encompassing theory that describes the vibrational solvatochromism, electrochromism, and dynamic fluctuation of vibrational frequencies has not been completely established mainly due to the intrinsic complexity of intermolecular interactions in condensed phases. In particular, the amount of data obtained from the linear and nonlinear vibrational spectroscopic experiments has been rapidly increasing, but the lack of a quantitative method to interpret these measurements has been one major obstacle in broadening the applications of these methods. Among various theoretical models, one of the most successful approaches is a semiempirical model generally referred to as the vibrational spectroscopic map that is based on a rigorous theory of intermolecular interactions. Recently, genetic algorithm, neural network, and machine learning approaches have been applied to the development of vibrational solvatochromism theory. In this review, we provide comprehensive descriptions of the theoretical foundation and various examples showing its extraordinary successes in the interpretations of experimental observations. In addition, a brief introduction to a newly created repository Web site (http://frequencymap.org) for vibrational spectroscopic maps is presented. We anticipate that a combination of the vibrational frequency map approach and state-of-the-art multidimensional vibrational spectroscopy will be one of the most fruitful ways to study the structure and dynamics of chemical, biological, and functional molecular systems in the future.
Anharmonicity and quantum nuclear effects in theoretical vibrational spectroscopy: a molecular tale of two cities

Abstract:Anharmonic effects due to the shape of the molecular potential energy surface far from the equilibrium geometry are major responsible for the deviations of the actual frequencies of vibration from the harmonic estimates. However, anharmonic effects are not the solely responsible for this. Quantum nuclear effects also play a prominent role in theoretical vibrational spectroscopy as they contribute to drive away the molecular vibrational frequencies from their harmonic counterpart. The consequence of this is that anharmonicity and quantum effects may be difficult to separate spectroscopically and get often confused. In this work we show that anharmonicity can be detected by means of classical simulations, while quantum nuclear effects need to be identified by means of an approach originating from either the time independent or the time dependent Schroedinger equation of quantum mechanics. We show that classical methods are sensitive to the temperature or energy conditions under which they are undertaken. This leads to wrong frequency estimates, when dealing with few-Kelvin experiments, if one performs simulations simply matching the experimental temperature. Conversely, quantum approaches are not affected by this issue and they provide more and better information.

Abstract:<p>Near-infrared (12,500–4,000 cm<sup>−1</sup>; 800–2,500 nm) spectroscopy is the hallmark for one of the most rapidly advancing analytical techniques over the last few decades. Although it is mainly recognized as an analytical tool, near-infrared spectroscopy has also contributed significantly to physical chemistry, e.g., by delivering invaluable data on the anharmonic nature of molecular vibrations or peculiarities of intermolecular interactions. In all these contexts, a major barrier in the form of an intrinsic complexity of near-infrared spectra has been encountered. A large number of overlapping vibrational contributions influenced by anharmonic effects create complex patterns of spectral dependencies, in many cases hindering our comprehension of near-infrared spectra. Quantum mechanical calculations commonly serve as a major support to infrared and Raman studies; conversely, near-infrared spectroscopy has long been hindered in this regard due to practical limitations. Advances in anharmonic theories in hyphenation with ever-growing computer technology have enabled feasible theoretical near-infrared spectroscopy in recent times. Accordingly, a growing number of quantum mechanical investigations aimed at near-infrared region has been witnessed. The present review article summarizes these most recent accomplishments in the emerging field. Applications of generalized approaches, such as vibrational self-consistent field and vibrational second order perturbation theories as well as their derivatives, and dense grid-based studies of vibrational potential, are overviewed. Basic and applied studies are discussed, with special attention paid to the ones which aim at improving analytical spectroscopy. A remarkable potential arises from the growing applicability of anharmonic computations to solving the problems which arise in both basic and analytical near-infrared spectroscopy. This review highlights an increased value of quantum mechanical calculations to near-infrared spectroscopy in relation to other kinds of vibrational spectroscopy.</p>

Observing Intramolecular Vibrational Energy Redistribution Via the Short-Time Fourier Transform

Abstract:Intramolecular vibrational energy relaxation (IVR) is important in many problems in chemical physics. Here, we apply the short-time Fourier transform method for analyzing IVR with classical dynamics. Calculating time-dependent Fourier transforms to perform such an analysis requires extending the usual Fourier transform method, and we do that here. The guiding concept behind the generalization is that if there is a shift of vibrational energy from one frequency range to another, we see a difference between the spectrum before the shift and the spectrum after the shift. We use time-window functions to transform the power spectrum of a trajectory into a time-dependent density spectrum of the average kinetic energy. The time-dependent average kinetic energy for each interval of the spectrum becomes an indicator to monitor the extent and nature of the energy transfer into and out of the corresponding modes. We illustrate this method for the H2O molecule. By analyzing cases with different initial conditions, we show that the short-time Fourier transform method can distinguish trends in IVR that depend on the initial distribution of energy and not just on the total energy.
Fano Resonances in Quantum Transport with Vibrations

Abstract:Quantum mechanical scattering involving continuum states coupled to a scatterer with a discrete spectrum gives rise to Fano resonances. Here we consider scatterers that possess internal vibrational degrees of freedom in addition to discrete states. Entanglement between the scattered excitation and vibrational modes complicates analytical and numerical calculations considerably. For the example of one-dimensional scattering we develop a multichannel quantum scattering approach which can determine reflection and transmission probabilities in the presence of vibrations. Application to a linear chain coupled to a control unit containing vibrating sites shows that vibrational degrees of freedom can have a profound effect on quantum transport. For suitable parameters, spectral regions which are opaque in the static case can be rendered transparent when vibrations are included. The formalism is general enough to be applicable to a variety of platforms for quantum transport including molecular aggregates, cold atom chains, quantum-dot arrays and molecular wires based on conjugated polymers.

Computational vibrational spectroscopy of molecule-surface interactions: what is still difficult and what can be done about it

Abstract:Interactions of molecules with solid surfaces are responsible for key functionalities in a range of currently actively pursued technologies, including heterogeneous catalysis for synthesis or decomposition of molecules, sensitization, surface functionalization and molecular doping, etc. Modeling of such interactions is important, in particular, for the assignment of species and assignment and design of reaction pathways and ultimately for rational design of better functional materials for a range of applications. Key types of calculations involve calculations of adsorption structures and energies, electronic structures, charge transport, vibrational and optical spectra, and reaction dynamics. While some of these calculations are routinely doable for small-size models, other types of calculations, including anharmonic vibrational spectroscopy, accurate optical spectroscopy, quantum reaction dynamics, and calculations on large systems, are still too difficult to be routinely doable. In this Perspective, we specifically focus on issues related to computing accurate vibrational spectra including quantum effects and anharmonicity and coupling of key degrees of freedom. Vibrational spectroscopies are widely used for species assignment on surfaces but computations of vibrational spectra are still dominated by the harmonic approximation. We discuss approaches that can make accurate quantum anharmonic computational spectroscopy easier and enable its wider deployment in applications. We describe advantages and disadvantages of different techniques including perturbation theory, variational, vibrational self-consistent field and vibrational configuration interaction, as well as collocation which we argue has significant potential in this application, allowing computing accurate spectra directly from non-expensive ab initio data and with modest CPU cost. Examples of applications of anharmonic techniques to molecule-surface systems are given.

Abstract:This article presents a general computational approach for efficient simulations of anharmonic vibrational spectra in chemical systems. An automated local-mode vibrational approach is presented, which borrows techniques from localized molecular orbitals in electronic structure theory. This approach generates spatially localized vibrational modes, in contrast to the delocalization exhibited by canonical normal modes. The method is rigorously tested across a series of chemical systems, ranging from small molecules to large water clusters and a protonated dipeptide. It is interfaced with exact, grid-based approaches, as well as vibrational self-consistent field methods. Most significantly, this new set of reference coordinates exhibits a well-behaved spatial decay of mode couplings, which allows for a systematic, a priori truncation of mode couplings and increased computational efficiency. Convergence can typically be reached by including modes within only about 4 Å. The local nature of this truncation suggests particular promise for the ab initio simulation of anharmonic vibrational motion in large systems, where connection to experimental spectra is currently most challenging.

Abstract:Quantum resonances, i.e., metastable states with a finite lifetime, play an important role in nuclear physics and other domains. Describing this phenomenon theoretically is generally a challenging task. In this work, we combine two established techniques to address this challenge. Complex scaling makes it possible to calculate resonances with bound-state-like methods. Finite-volume simulations exploit the fact that the infinite-volume properties of quantum systems are encoded in how discrete energy levels change as one varies the size of the volume. We apply complex scaling to systems in finite periodic boxes and derive the volume dependence of states in this scenario, demonstrating with explicit examples how one can use these relations to infer infinite-volume resonance energies and lifetimes.
