Abstract:The modelling, analysis, and visualisation of dynamic geospatial phenomena has been identified as a key developmental challenge for next-generation Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In this context, the envisaged paradigmatic extensions to contemporary foundational GIS technology raises fundamental questions concerning the ontological, formal representational, and (analytical) computational methods that would underlie their spatial information theoretic underpinnings. We present the conceptual overview and architecture for the development of high-level semantic and qualitative analytical capabilities for dynamic geospatial domains. Building on formal methods in the areas of commonsense reasoning, qualitative reasoning, spatial and temporal representation and reasoning, reasoning about actions and change, and computational models of narrative, we identify concrete theoretical and practical challenges that accrue in the context of formal reasoning about `space, events, actions, and change'. With this as a basis, and within the backdrop of an illustrated scenario involving the spatio-temporal dynamics of urban narratives, we address specific problems and solutions techniques chiefly involving `qualitative abstraction', `data integration and spatial consistency', and `practical geospatial abduction'. From a broad topical viewpoint, we propose that next-generation dynamic GIS technology demands a transdisciplinary scientific perspective that brings together Geography, Artificial Intelligence, and Cognitive Science. What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### Problems the Paper Aims to Solve This paper aims to address the key challenges faced by next-generation Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in modeling, analyzing, and visualizing dynamic geospatial phenomena. Specifically, the paper focuses on the following core issues: 1. **Modeling and Analysis of Dynamic Geospatial Phenomena**: - Current GIS systems primarily handle static or quasi-static spatial data, while future GIS systems need to be capable of processing dynamic, time-varying geospatial data. - New methods and technologies need to be developed to enable GIS to effectively represent and analyze these dynamic phenomena, including changes in objects, events, actions, and processes. 2. **Integration and Consistency of Spatiotemporal Data**: - Dynamic GIS requires the integration of large amounts of spatiotemporal data from various sources (e.g., satellite imagery, sensor networks, ground surveys). - Ensuring the spatial and temporal consistency and accuracy of these data is a significant challenge. 3. **High-Level Semantic and Qualitative Analysis Capabilities**: - Traditional GIS systems lack support for high-level semantic and qualitative analysis, limiting their application in solving complex problems. - The paper proposes enhancing GIS's high-level analysis capabilities by introducing methods such as commonsense reasoning, qualitative reasoning, and spatial and temporal representation and reasoning. 4. **Application of Narrative Models**: - Narrative models can serve as a framework for perceiving and interpreting geospatial phenomena, helping users understand complex spatiotemporal dynamics. - The paper explores how narrative models can be used to explain dynamic geospatial phenomena such as urbanization processes and environmental changes. 5. **Development of Decision Support Systems**: - Next-generation GIS systems need to have robust decision support capabilities, providing powerful tools for policymakers and analysts. - The paper proposes a comprehensive framework that combines formal methods and computational models to support high-level analysis and decision-making tasks. ### Summary By introducing formal methods and computational models, this paper aims to enhance the capabilities of GIS in modeling, analyzing, and visualizing dynamic geospatial phenomena. Specific goals include developing new methods and technologies, addressing the integration and consistency of spatiotemporal data, enhancing high-level semantic and qualitative analysis capabilities, and supporting complex decision-making tasks through narrative models.
