Abstract:We employ a generalised version of Heath-Brown's square sieve in order to establish an asymptotic estimate of the number of solutions $a, b \in \mathbb N$ to the equations $a+b=n$ and $a-b=n$, where $a$ is $k$-free and $b$ is $l$-free. This is the first time that this problem has been studied with distinct powers $k$ and $l$.

Abstract:We introduce a modification of the linear sieve whose weights satisfy strong factorization properties, and consequently equidistribute primes up to size $x$ in arithmetic progressions to moduli up to $x^{10/17}$. This surpasses the level of distribution $x^{4/7}$ with the linear sieve weights from well-known work of Bombieri, Friedlander, and Iwaniec, and which was recently extended to $x^{7/12}$ by Maynard. As an application, we obtain a new upper bound on the count of twin primes. Our method simplifies the 2004 argument of Wu, and gives the largest percentage improvement since the 1986 bound of Bombieri, Friedlander, and Iwaniec.

On the Sum of Squarefree Integers and a Power of Two

Abstract:Erdos conjectured that every odd number greater than one can be expressed as the sum of a squarefree number and a power of two. Subsequently, Odlyzko and McCranie provided numerical verification of this conjecture up to $10^7$ and $1.4\cdot 10^9$. In this paper, we extend the verification to all odd integers up to $2^{50}$, thereby improving the previous bound by a factor of more than $8\cdot 10^5$. Our approach employs a highly parallelized algorithm implemented on a GPU, which significantly accelerates the process. We provide details of the algorithm and present novel heuristic computations and numerical findings, including the smallest odd numbers $<2^{50}$ that require a higher power of two as all smaller ones in their representation.

On Frobenius Formulas of Power Sequences

Abstract:Let $A=(a_1, a_2, \ldots, a_n)$ be a sequence of relative prime integers, each greater than or equal to 2. The Frobenius number $g(A)$ represents the largest integer that cannot be expressed as a nonnegative linear combination of the elements in $A$. Our recent work has introduced a combinatorial method for calculating $g(A)$ in the specific form $A=(a, a+B)=(a, a+b_1, \ldots, a+b_k)$. This method reduces the problem to a simpler optimization problem, denoted as $O_B(M)$. In this paper, we apply this method to solve the open problem of characterizing $g(A)$ for the square sequence $A=(a,a+1,a+2^2,\ldots, a+k^2)$. We demonstrate that the Frobenius number $g(a, a+1^2, a+2^2, \ldots)$ for the infinite square sequence admits a simpler solution. This is because the corresponding optimization problem, $O_B(M)$, can be solved by applying number-theoretic principles, specifically Lagrange's Four-Square Theorem and related results. Consequently, we are able to resolve the open problem by utilizing Lagrange's Four-Square Theorem in conjunction with generating functions.

Abstract:In this paper, it is proved that every sufficiently large even integer can be represented as the sum of two squares of primes, two cubes of primes, two biquadrates of primes and 16 powers of 2. Furthermore, there are at least 5.313% odd integers that can be represented as one square of prime, one cube of prime and one biquadrate of prime. This result constitutes a refinement upon that of R. Zhang [8].

Abstract:We introduce a variant of the large sieve and give an example of its use in a sieving problem. Take the interval [N] = {1,...,N} and, for each odd prime p <= N^{1/2}, remove or ``sieve out'' by all n whose reduction mod p lies in some interval I_p of Z/pZ of length (p-1)/2. Let A be the set that remains: then |A| << N^{1/3 + o(1)}, a bound which improves slightly on the bound of |A| << N^{1/2} which results from applying the large sieve in its usual form. This is a very, very weak result in the direction of a question of Helfgott and Venkatesh, who suggested that nothing like equality can occur in applications of the large sieve unless the unsieved set is essentially the set of values of a polynomial (e.g. A is the set of squares). Assuming the ``exponent pairs conjecture'' (which is deep, as it implies a host of classical questions including the Lindelöf hypothesis, Gauss circle problem and Dirichlet divisor problem) the bound can be improved to |A| << N^{o(1)}. This raises the worry that even reasonably simple sieve problems are connected to issues of which we have little understanding at the present time.

Abstract:In this paper we derive many infinite families of explicit exact formulas involving either squares or triangular numbers, two of which generalize Jacobi's 4 and 8 squares identities to 4n^2 or 4n(n+1) squares, respectively, without using cusp forms. In fact, we similarly generalize to infinite families all of Jacobi's explicitly stated degree 2, 4, 6, 8 Lambert series expansions of classical theta functions. In addition, we extend Jacobi's special analysis of 2 squares, 2 triangles, 6 squares, 6 triangles to 12 squares, 12 triangles, 20 squares, 20 triangles, respectively. These results, depending on new expansions for powers of various products of classical theta functions, arise in the setting of Jacobi elliptic functions, associated continued fractions, regular C-fractions, Hankel or Turanian determinants, Fourier series, Lambert series, inclusion/exclusion, Laplace expansion formula for determinants, and Schur functions. The Schur function form of these infinite families of identities are analogous to the eta-function identities of Macdonald. Moreover, the powers 4n(n+1), 2n^2+n, 2n^2-n that appear in Macdonald's work also arise at appropriate places in our analysis. A special case of our general methods yields a proof of the two Kac--Wakimoto conjectured identities involving representing a positive integer by sums of 4n^2 or 4n(n+1) triangular numbers, respectively.

Abstract:For non-negative integers $a,b,$ and $n$, let $N(a, b; n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of squares with coefficients $1$ or $3$ ($a$ of ones and $b$ of threes). Let $N^*(a,b; n)$ be the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of odd squares with coefficients $1$ or $3$ ($a$ of ones and $b$ of threes). We have that $N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b)$ is the number of representations of $n$ as a sum of triangular numbers with coefficients $1$ or $3$ ($a$ of ones and $b$ of threes). It is known that for $a$ and $b$ satisfying $1\leq a+3b \leq 7$, we have $$ N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b)= \frac{2}{2+{a\choose4}+ab} N(a,b;8n+a+3b) $$ and for $a$ and $b$ satisfying $a+3b=8$, we have $$ N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b) = \frac{2}{2+{a\choose4}+ab} \left( N(a,b;8n+a+3b) - N(a,b; (8n+a+3b)/4) \right). %& t(8,0;{n}) = \frac{1}{36} \left( N(8,0;8n+8) - N(8,0;2n+2) \right). \label{eq31_5} $$ Such identities are not known for $a+3b>8$. In this paper, for general $a$ and $b$ with $a+b$ even, we prove asymptotic equivalence of formulas similar to the above, as $n\rightarrow\infty$. One of our main results extends a theorem of Bateman, Datskovsky, and Knopp where the case $b=0$ and general $a$ was considered. Our approach is different from Bateman-Datskovsky-Knopp's proof where the circle method and singular series were used. We achieve our results by explicitly computing the Eisenstein components of the generating functions of $N^*(a,b;8n+a+3b)$ and $N(a,b;8n+a+3b)$. The method we use is robust and can be adapted in studying the asymptotics of other representation numbers with general coefficients.

Abstract:For $n \geq 3,$ let $ p_n $ denote the $n^{\rm th}$ prime number. Let $[ \; ]$ denote the floor or greatest integer function. For a positive integer $m,$ let $\pi_2(m)$ denote the number of twin primes not exceeding $m.$ The twin prime conjecture states that there are infinitely many prime numbers $p$ such that $p+2$ is also prime. In this paper we state a conjecture to the effect that given any integer $a>0$ there exists an integer $N_2(a)$ such that $$ \left[\frac{ap^2_{n+1}}{2(n+1)} \right] \leq \pi_2\left(p^2_{n+1} \right) $$ for all $n \geq N_2(a)$ and prove the conjecture in the case $a=1.$ This, in turn, establishes the twin prime conjecture.

Abstract:We survey the potential for progress in additive number theory arising from recent advances concerning major arc bounds associated with mean value estimates for smooth Weyl sums. We focus attention on the problem of representing large positive integers as sums of a square and a number of $k$-th powers. We show that such representations exist when the number of $k$-th powers is at least $\lfloor c_0k\rfloor +2$, where $c_0=2.136294\ldots $. By developing an abstract framework capable of handling sequences with appropriate distribution properties, analogous conclusions are obtained, for example, when the square is restricted to have prime argument.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with finite sequences of integers that may be written as sums of squares of two nonzero integers. We first find infinitely many integers $n$ such that $n, n+h$ and $n+k$ are all sums of two squares where $h$ and $k$ are two arbitrary integers, and as an immediate corollary obtain, in parametric terms, three consecutive integers that are sums of two squares. Similarly we obtain $n$ in parametric terms such that all the four integers $n, n+1, n+2, n+4$ are sums of two squares. We also find infinitely many integers $n$ such that all the five integers $n, n+1, n+2, n+4, n+5$ are sums of two squares, and finally, we find infinitely many arithmetic progressions, with common difference $4$, of five integers all of which are sums of two squares.

Near-squares in binary recurrence sequences

Abstract:We call an integer a \emph{near-square} if its absolute value is a square or a prime times a square. We investigate such near-squares in the binary recurrence sequences defined for integers $a \geq 3$ by $u_{0}(a)=0$, $u_{1}(a)=1$ and $u_{n+2}(a)=au_{n+1}(a)-u_{n}(a)$ for $n \geq 0$. We show that for a given $a \geq 3$, there is at most one $n \geq 5$ such that $u_{n}(a)$ is a near-square. With the exceptions of $u_{6}(3)=12^{2}$ and $u_{7}(6)=239 \cdot 13^{2}$, any such $u_{n}(a)$ can only be a near-square if $a \equiv 2 \bmod 4$, $n \equiv 3 \bmod 4$ is prime and $n \geq 19$. This is part of a more general phenomenon regarding near-squares in non-degenerate recurrence sequences defined for integers $a$ and $b=-b_{1}^{2}$ by $u_{0}(a,b)=0$, $u_{1}(a,b)=1$ and $u_{n+2}(a,b)=au_{n+1}(a,b)+bu_{n}(a,b)$ for $n \geq 0$ (see our Conjecture 1.1). It arises from a new Aurifeuillean-like factorization of elements of recurrence sequences that we have discovered (see relation (1.1)).
