Abstract:Cosmic-rays with energies exceeding 10^{19} eV are referred to as Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs). The sources of these particles and their acceleration mechanism are unknown, and for many years have been the issue of much debate. The first part of this review describes the main constraints, that are implied by UHECR observations on the properties of candidate UHECR sources, the candidate sources, and the related main open questions. In order to address the challenges of identifying the UHECR sources and of probing the physical mechanisms driving them, a "multi-messenger" approach will most likely be required, combining electromagnetic, cosmic-ray and neutrino observations. The second part of the review is devoted to a discussion of high energy neutrino astronomy. It is shown that detectors, which are currently under construction, are expected to reach the effective mass required for the detection of high energy extra-Galactic neutrino sources, and may therefore play a key role in the near future in resolving the main open questions. The detection of high energy neutrinos from extra-Galactic sources will not only provide constraints on the identity and underlying physics of UHECR sources, but may furthermore provide information on fundamental neutrino properties.

Abstract:Multi-messenger high-energy astrophysics has currently achieved the potential to unravel the origin of cosmic rays and how sources accelerate them, their relation to the diffuse radiation in the extra-galactic space, and their role to forge their galaxies of origin while they wander in their magnetic fields for millions of years. Neutrino astronomy produced its major scientific milestone with the discovery by IceCube of a diffuse flux at energies above 60~TeV with intensity comparable to a predicted upper limit to the flux from extra-galactic sources of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. More recent results provide the first strong evidence of a standalone neutrino source and a highly probable coincidence of a neutrino alert with gamma rays. These results of IceCube indicate that neutrino astronomy can complement photon astronomy also providing insights into opaque sources of high-energy radiation. Starburst galaxies and jetted black holes in active galaxies are favored candidates to explain the diffuse cosmic neutrino background. Additionally, gamma-ray bursts remain an intriguing mystery now enriched by joint observations of gamma-rays and gravitational waves. The galactic diffuse flux, produced by cosmic ray interactions on the interstellar matter of our galaxy and peaking at lower energies, is within the reach of neutrino detectors. Together with the measured galactic gamma-ray flux up to PeV energies, they will shed light on the knee region of cosmic rays and the possible existence of dark matter in the Galactic plane. In the future, more work will be done in IceCube and deep sea and lake neutrino telescopes to use further low-energy cascades for cosmic source searches thanks to improved descriptions of detection media and deep learning methods.

Abstract:By constantly monitoring at least one complete hemisphere of the sky, neutrino telescopes are well designed to detect neutrinos emitted by transient astrophysical events. Real-time searches with the ANTARES telescope have been performed to look for neutrino candidates coincident with gamma-ray bursts detected by the Swift and Fermi satellites, highenergy neutrino events registered by IceCube, transient events from blazars monitored by HAWC, photon-neutrino coincidences by AMON notices and gravitational wave candidates observed by LIGO/Virgo. By requiring temporal coincidence, this approach increases the sensitivity and the significance of a potential discovery. Thanks to the good angular accuracy of neutrino candidates reconstructed with the ANTARES telescope, a coincident detection can also improve the positioning area of non-well localised triggers such as those detected by gravitational wave interferometers. This paper summarises the results of the follow-up performed by the ANTARES telescope between 01/2014 and 02/2022, which corresponds to the end of the data taking period.

Abstract:Low fluxes of astrophysical neutrinos at TeV energies and the overwhelming background of atmospheric neutrinos below that, render the current paradigm of neutrino astronomy as a severely statistics limited one. While many hints have emerged, all the evidence gathered by IceCube and ANTARES, over the course of almost a decade and a half of operation, have fallen short of providing any conclusive answer to the puzzle of the origin of high-energy cosmic rays and neutrinos. The advancement of the field is thus closely associated with not only the neutrino observatories coming online in the next few years, but also on the coordinated efforts of the EM, GW and cosmic ray communities to develop dedicated channels and infrastructure that allows for swift and comprehensive multi-messenger follow-up of relevant events detected in any of the sectors. This paper highlights the strides that have been already taken in that direction and the fruits that they have born, as well as the challenges that lie ahead.

Abstract:We highlight the capacity of current and forthcoming air shower arrays using water-Cherenkov stations to detect neutrino events spanning energies from $10\,$GeV to $100\,$TeV. This detection approach leverages individual stations equipped with both bottom and top photosensors, making use of features of the signal time trace and machine learning techniques. Our findings demonstrate the complementary of this method to established and future neutrino-detection experiments, including IceCube and the upcoming Hyper-Kamiokande experiment.

Search for UHE neutrinos in the background of cosmic rays

Abstract:The main challenge in detecting ultra-high energy (UHE) neutrinos is discriminating a neutrino-induced shower in the background of showers initiated by ultra-high energy nuclei. The resulting shower development from neutrinos exhibits different characteristics from hadron-induced showers because neutrinos penetrate the atmosphere more deeply than hadrons. This study focuses on simulations of highly inclined neutrino-induced showers above $75^\circ$ zenith angles, exploring an extensive energy range from $1 \text{EeV}$ to $120 \text{EeV}$. These simulated showers have different ranges of interaction depths corresponding to each zenith angle, presenting diverse detection challenges. Our methodology utilises timing data from radio antennas for the shower front calculation for extensive air showers induced by neutrinos and nuclei. Furthermore, we incorporate signals obtained from Water Cherenkov detectors and the spatial distribution of stations registering signals in both Water Cherenkov detectors and radio antennas. We aim to classify neutrino-induced showers and background events stemming from nuclei by harnessing a decision tree classifier employing the Gini impurity method. Our framework yields excellent accuracy for separating the neutrinos from the background. The findings of this study offer significant advancements in the domain of UHE neutrino detection, shedding light on astrophysical phenomena associated with these elusive particles amidst the complex background of UHE nuclei.

Multimessenger astronomy driven by high-energy neutrinos

Abstract:The possible connection between high energy neutrinos in the energy region above 100 TeV and ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at energies above $10^{19}$ eV motivates multi-messenger observation approaches involving neutrinos and the multi-wavelength electro-magnetic (EMG) signals. We have constructed a generic unification scheme to model the neutrino and UHECR common sources. Finding the allowed space of the parameters on the source characteristics allows a case study to evaluate the likelihood of each of the known source classes being such unified sources. The likely source candidates are transient or flaring objects mainly in optical and X-ray bands. We propose the two feasible strategies to identify these sources. One is to introduce a sub-threshold triggering in a wide field of view X-ray observatory for following up neutrino detections, and the other is to search for EMG counterparts associated with detections of multiple neutrino events coming from the same direction within a time scale of $\lesssim 30$ days. Sources with a total neutrino emission energy greater than $\sim 10^{51}$ erg are accessible with the present or near-future high energy neutrino observation facilities collaborating with X-rays and optical telescopes currently in operation. The neutrino-driven multi-messenger observations provide a smoking gun to probe the hadronic emission sources we would not be able to find otherwise.

Abstract:Here we discuss the latest developments in the debate, where the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray particles come from. In this brief review, we emphasize the predictions that necessarily follow from the various concepts proposed. We discuss both sources and propagation, and spend some space on the by now most conservative model, giant radio galaxies and their hot spots and jets, because it allows more steps in the reasoning to be checked, and is more tightly constrained than any other model. It has survived about forty years of debate already. We summarize the task ahead of us at the end, including the development of new technologies to observe ultra high energy cosmic rays, e.g., with the radio emission of air showers, which may lead to an alternative to the fluorescence detectors with their small duty cycle. Due to HiRes, AUGER, and the plans for EUSO, the future is bright, and the ultra high energy cosmic ray particles may yet allow us to explore new physics.

Abstract:We briefly review the general insight into the indirect searches of dark matter. We discuss the primary equation in a three-level multimessenger approach (gamma rays, neutrinos and antiprotons), and we introduce the reader to the main topics and related uncertainties (e.g. dark matter density distribution, cosmic rays, particle physics). As an application of the general concept, we focus on the multi-TeV dark matter candidate among other weak interactive massive particles. We present the state-of-the-art on this sub-field, and we discuss open questions and experimental limitations.

Multimessenger Potential of the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland

Abstract:The Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) is the only ultrahigh energy (UHE, ${\gtrsim}30$~PeV) neutrino monitor of the Northern sky and will soon be the world's most sensitive high-uptime detector of UHE neutrinos. Because of this, RNO-G represents an important piece of the multimessenger landscape over the next decade. In this talk, we will highlight RNO-G's multimessenger capabilities and its potential to provide key information in the search for the most extreme astrophysical accelerators. In particular, we will highlight opportunities enabled by RNO-G's unique field-of-view, its potential to constrain the sources of UHE cosmic rays, and its complementarity with IceCube at lower energies.

Abstract:The objective of this work is to report on the influence of muon interactions on the development of air showers initiated by astroparticles. We make a comparative study of the different theoretical approaches to muon bremsstrahlung and muonic pair production interactions. A detailed algorithm that includes all the relevant characteristics of such processes has been implemented in the AIRES air shower simulation system. We have simulated ultrahigh energy showers in different conditions in order to measure the influence of these muonic electromagnetic interactions. We have found that during the late stages of the shower development (well beyond the shower maximum) many global observables are significantly modified in relative terms when the mentioned interactions are taken into account. This is most evident in the case of the electromagnetic component of very inclined showers. On the other hand, our simulations indicate that the studied processes do not induce significant changes either in the position of the shower maximum or the structure of the shower front surface.

Abstract:Over the last two decades, we have intensified our search for a ghost particle, with the hope that it would provide us with information on the darkest places of our Universe. This quest has been conducted from the deep caves of the Earth, up to the upper layers of our atmosphere, and from one Pole to another. In this review, I will summarize the odyssey of the search for astrophysical neutrinos. I will focus on the recent discoveries and technical developments that led us to the point where we stand now. I will highlight the different types of neutrino detectors, and their performances enabling the discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos, and the understanding of their sources behind. Finally, I will present some possible paths to the remaining uncharted territory of the ultra-high-energy neutrino astronomy.

Abstract:The origin of high-energy cosmic rays, and their behavior in astrophysical sources, remains an open question. Recently, new ways to address this question have been made possible by the observation of a new astrophysical messenger, namely neutrinos. The IceCube telescope has detected a diffuse flux of astrophysical neutrinos in the TeV-PeV energy range, likely produced in astrophysical sources accelerating cosmic rays, and more recently it has reported on a few candidate individual neutrino sources. Future experiments will be able to improve on these measurements quantitatively, by the detection of more events, and qualitatively, by extending the measurement into the EeV energy range. In this paper, we review the main features of the neutrino emission and sources observed by IceCube, as well as the main candidate sources that could contribute to the diffuse neutrino flux. As a parallel question, we review the status of high-energy neutrinos as a probe of Beyond the Standard Model physics coupling to the neutrino sector.

Abstract:Very-high energy (GeV-TeV) gamma rays in the universe suggest the presence of an accelerator in the source. Neutrinos and gamma rays are intriguing astrophysical messengers. Multi-messenger particle emission produced by interactions of cosmic rays with radiation fields and interstellar matter is a probe of luminosity of sources of cosmic rays with EeV energies, known as Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs). This work estimates the neutrino flux and suggests that gamma-ray emission is primarily caused by cosmic-ray interactions during propagation. As energy loss processes occur, secondary fluxes are generated, primarily by pion decay. We provide UHECR luminosity of galaxies from multi-messenger particles. These findings not only highlight the potential of certain galaxies as sources of UHECR, but also underscore the intricate interplay of various astrophysical processes within them. By understanding the luminosity patterns and multi-messenger particle emissions, we can gain valuable insights into the environmental conditions, acceleration mechanisms, and other intrinsic properties that position these galaxies as candidates for UHECR production.

Abstract:The recent discovery of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos and first hints of coincident electromagnetic and neutrino emission herald the beginning of the era of multi-messenger astronomy. Due to their high power, transient sources are expected to supply a significant fraction of the observed energetic astroparticles, through enhanced particle acceleration and interactions. Here, we review theoretical expectations of neutrino emission from transient astrophysical sources and the current and upcoming experimental landscape, highlighting the most promising channels for discovery and specifying their detectability.

Searches for ultra-high energy gamma-ray at the Pierre Auger Observatory and implications on super-heavy dark matter

Abstract:The first interactions of photon-induced showers are of electromagnetic nature, and the transfer of energy to the hadron/muon channel is reduced with respect to the bulk of hadron-induced showers. This results in a lower number of secondary muons. Additionally, as the development of photon showers is delayed by the typically small multiplicity of electromagnetic interactions, their maximum of shower development is deeper in the atmosphere than for showers initiated by hadrons. These salient features have enabled searches for photon showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory. They have led to stringent upper limits on ultra-high-energy gamma-ray fluxes over four orders in magnitude in energy. These limits are not only of considerable astrophysical interest, but they also allow us to constrain beyond-standard-physics scenarios. For instance, dark matter particles could be superheavy, provided their lifetime is much longer than the age of the universe. Constraints on specific extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics that meet the lifetime requirement for a superheavy particle will be presented. They include limits on instanton strength as well as on mixing angle between active and sterile neutrinos.

Abstract:Galactic PeVatrons are sources that can accelerate cosmic rays to PeV energies. The high-energy cosmic rays are expected to interact with the surrounding ambient material or radiation, resulting in the production of gamma rays and neutrinos. To optimize for the detection of such associated production of gamma rays and neutrinos for a given source morphology and spectrum, a multi-messenger analysis that combines gamma rays and neutrinos is required. In this study, we use the Multi-Mission Maximum Likelihood framework (3ML) with IceCube Maximum Likelihood Analysis software (i3mla) and HAWC Accelerated Likelihood (HAL) to search for a correlation between 22 known gamma-ray sources from the third HAWC gamma-ray catalog and 14 years of IceCube track-like data. No significant neutrino emission from the direction of the HAWC sources was found. We report the best-fit gamma-ray model and 90% CL neutrino flux limit from the 22 sources. From the neutrino flux limit, we conclude that the gamma-ray emission from five of the sources can not be produced purely from hadronic interactions. We report the limit for the fraction of gamma rays produced by hadronic interactions for these five sources.

Abstract:Efforts to detect ultrahigh energy neutrinos are driven by several objectives: What is the origin of astrophysical neutrinos detected with IceCube? What are the sources of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays? Do the ANITA detected events point to new physics? Shedding light on these questions requires instruments that can detect neutrinos above $10^7$ GeV with sufficient sensitivity - a daunting task. While most ultrahigh energy neutrino experiments are based on the detection of a radio signature from shower particles following a neutrino interaction, we believe that the detection of Cherenkov and fluorescence light from shower particles is an attractive alternative. Imaging air showers with Cherenkov and fluorescence light is a technique that is successfully used in several ultrahigh energy cosmic ray and very-high energy gamma-ray experiments. We performed a case study of an air-shower imaging system for the detection of earth-skimming tau neutrinos. The detector configuration we consider consists of an imaging system that is located on top of a mountain and is pointed at the horizon. From the results of this study we conclude that a sensitivity of $3\cdot10^{-9}$ GeV cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$sr$^{-1}$ can be achieved at $2\cdot10^8$ GeV with a relatively small and modular system after three years of observation. In this presentation we discuss key findings of our study and how they translate into design requirements for an imaging system we dub Trinity.
