Abstract:We present an extensive study of hexadecapole correlations in the rare-earth region near N=90 and the effects these correlations have on various nuclear properties, such as the low-energy spectra, as well as quadrupole, hexadecapole, and monopole transition strengths. In order to examine hexadecapole correlations, we employ a mapped sdg interacting boson model, with parameters derived from a self-consistent mean-field calculations with a relativistic energy density functional. We apply this model to even-even isotopes of Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, and Er ( Z=60–68 ) with neutron numbers N=84–96 . The obtained results show a good agreement with the experiment. By comparing the results with the ones obtained from a simpler mapped sd interacting boson model, we show that the inclusion of the hexadecapole degree of freedom via the g boson is necessary to improve the results of the Jπ≥6+ yrast energies in the nuclei with N=84 and 86, being near the neutron shell closure. The sdg interacting boson model increases the quadrupole transition strengths between yrast states in the N=90 and 92 well deformed nuclei, which is in good agreement with the experiment for most of those isotopes. The presence of g bosons does have an important effect on hexadecapole transition strengths, although experimental data for such transitions are limited. Benchmark of many-body approaches for magnetic dipole transition strength

Abstract:The low-energy enhancement observed recently in the deexcitation gamma-ray strength functions, suggested to arise due to the magnetic dipole radiation, motivates theoretical efforts to improve the description of M1 strength in available nuclear structure models. Reliable theoretical predictions of nuclear dipole excitations are of interest for different nuclear applications and in particular for nuclear astrophysics, where the calculations of radiative capture cross sections often resort to theoretical strength functions. We aim to benchmark many-body methods in their description of the M1 strength functions, with a special emphasis on the low-energy effects observed in the deexcitation strength. We investigate the zero-temperature and finite-temperature magnetic dipole strength functions computed within the quasiparticle random-phase approximation and compare them to those from exact diagonalizations of the same Hamiltonian in restricted orbital spaces. The study is carried out for a sample of 25 spherical and deformed nuclei which can be described by diagonalization of the respective effective Hamiltonian in three different valence spaces. A reasonable agreement is found for the total photoabsorption strengths while the QRPA distributions are shown to be systematically shifted down in energy with respect to exact results. Photoemission strengths obtained within the FT-QRPA appear insufficient to explain the low-energy enhancement of the M1 strength functions. The problems encountered in QRPA calculations are ascribed to the lack of correlations in the nuclear ground state and to the truncation of the many-body space. In particular, the latter prevents obtaining the sufficiently high level density to produce the low-energy enhancement of the strength function, making the (FT-)QRPA approach unsuitable for predictions of such effects across the nuclear chart.

Abstract:In the framework of relativistic mean-field theory, the strength of the pairing force is systematically studied for several isotope chains of rare-earth nuclei. It is shown, for the first time, that the pairing strength of the neutron, G(n), increases dramatically around the magic number N = 82, while for the proton it is strongly related to the odd-even difference of the neutron number. The results indicate a strong correlation between the shell structure and the pairing force strength.

Abstract:The five dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) implemented with Gogny force has been employed in systematic calculations of electric monopole (E0) transitions in even-even nuclei with masses 30<a<310 . Significant improvements in the comparison between experimental data and calculations are achieved using (i) stronger collective masses than those inferred from the Inglis-Beliaev approximation and (ii) the E0 transition operator as defined by Church and Weneser [E. L. Church and J. Weneser, Phys. Rev. 103 , 1035 (1956)]. Main emphasis has been placed on the square of the E0 transition strength, ρ2(E0;02+→01+) , for transitions between the first 0+ excited state and ground state levels. The dimensionless parameter X(E0/E2) has also been considered in 5DCH calculations covering the rare earth and actinide regions where sparse data are available. Finally, the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) implemented with Gogny force has been considered as a complementary model for the interpretation of ρ2(E0;0i+→01+) , i≠2 , data available for Er166 and U238 . The 5DCH model provides a reasonable description of collective E0 transitions, but fails otherwise. Specific shell effects are not considered in the present modeling. Robust ab initio predictions for dimensionless ratios of E2 and radius observables. I. Electric quadrupole moments and deformation

Abstract:Converged results for E2 observables are notoriously challenging to obtain in ab initio no-core configuration interaction (NCCI) approaches. Matrix elements of the E2 operator are sensitive to the large-distance tails of the nuclear wave function, which converge slowly in an oscillator basis expansion. Similar convergence challenges beset ab initio prediction of the nuclear charge radius. However, we exploit systematic correlations between the calculated E2 and radius observables to yield meaningful predictions for relations among these observables. In particular, we examine ab initio predictions for dimensionless ratios of the form Q/r^2, for nuclei throughout the $p$ shell. Meaningful predictions for electric quadrupole moments may then be made by calibrating to the ground-state charge radius, if experimentally known, or vice versa. Moreover, these dimensionless ratios provide ab initio insight into the nuclear quadrupole deformation.

Abstract:Spectrum and electric dipole transition rates and relative intensities in $^{152-154}$Sm, $^{156-160}$Gd, $^{160-162}$Dy are studied in the framework of the interacting boson model with s,p,d,f bosons. It is found that E1 transition data among the low-lying levels are in good agreement with the SU(3) dynamical symmetry of the spdf interacting boson model proposed by Engel and Iachello to describe collective rotation with octupole vibration. These results show that these nuclei have SU(3) dynamic symmetry to a good approximation. Also in this work many algebraic expressions for electric dipole transitions in the SU(3) limit of the spdf-IBM have been obtained. These formulae together with the formulae given previously exhaust nearly all the E1 transitions for low-lying negative parity states. They are useful in analyzing experimental data.

Abstract:The experimental $E1$ strength distribution below 4 MeV in rare-earth nuclei suggests a local breaking of isospin symmetry. In addition to the octupole states, additional $1^-$ states with enhanced E1 strength have been observed in rare-earth nuclei by means of ($\gamma,\gamma'$) experiments. By reproducing the experimental results, the spdf interacting boson model calculations provide further evidence for the formation of an $\alpha$ cluster in medium-mass nuclei and might provide a new understanding of the origin of low-lying E1 strength.

Abstract:This study presents both experimental and theoretical analysis of the 4d 2 D5/2 → 2 D3/2 magnetic dipole transition in Rb-like ions. Spectral lines of Xe17+, La20+ and Pr22+ ions were recorded using an electron beam ion trap. The theoretical framework employed the fully relativistic Multi-configuration Dirac–Hartree–Fock method, accounting for the Breit interaction, QED effects and comprehensive core-valence correlation. An impressive correlation is observed between the theoretical and experimental findings. Notably, this study illustrates that the contribution of the core-valence correlation, especially concerning deep core subshells, is pivotal for the fine structure splittings.

Abstract:We explore the correlation of the neutrinoless double-β decay nuclear matrix element (NME) with electric quadrupole (E2) strength in the framework of the Hamiltonian-based generator-coordinate method, which is a configuration-mixing calculation of symmetry-restored intrinsic basis states. The restoration of symmetries that are simultaneously broken in the mean-field states allows us to compute the structural and decay properties associated with wave functions characterized by good quantum numbers. Our calculations show a clear anti-correlation between the neutrinoless double-β decay NME and the transition rate of the collective quadrupole excitation from the ground state in response to artificial changes of the quadrupole–quadrupole interaction. The anti-correlation is more remarkable in the decay from a weakly deformed parent nucleus to a more deformed grand-daughter nucleus. This interrelation may provide a way to reduce the uncertainty of the nuclear matrix element.
The Relative Abundance of Correlated Spin-zero Nucleon Pairs

Abstract:We utilize the generalized contact formalism in conjunction with the Woods-Saxon mean-field description of the long-range part of the nuclear wave function to assess the relative prevalence of short-range correlation pairs within atomic nuclei. We validate our approach by fitting experimental charge density results and electron scattering experiments to a very good agreement. Applying our model, we calculate the spin-zero short-range correlations contact ratios. Interestingly, for nuclei with $A>50$, we observe a notable dependence on the neutron-to-proton ratio $N/Z$. Specifically, the probability per nucleon to find neutron-neutron pairs increases, while that of proton-proton pairs decreases, whereas the probability of finding neutron-proton pairs remains relatively constant. To interpret this isospin symmetry breaking effect, we employ a simple model based on generalized Levinger constants, linking it to differences in nuclear proton and neutron radii.

Abstract:In the present work we attempt to study the cluster model in the transition metal region. The spectrum fitting method is studied for the selected nuclei (88,90,92^Sr, 92,94^Zr, 98,100^Mo, 100,102,104, 106^Ru, 108,110^Pd and 112,114,116,118^Cd) with proton number (38 < ZT< 48) and mass number (88 < AT < 118). The core cluster charge products are correlated with the transition probability B(E2 2+ -> 0+), the excitation energies and the product of valence nucleon numbers of the parent nuclei.

Abstract:The well-known Migdal-Luttinger theorem states that the jump of the single-nucleon momentum distribution at the Fermi surface is equal to the inverse of the nucleon effective E-mass. Recent experiments studying short-range correlations (SRC) in nuclei using electron-nucleus scatterings at the Jefferson National Laboratory (JLAB) together with model calculations constrained significantly the Migdal-Luttinger jump at saturation density of nuclear matter. We show that the corresponding nucleon effective E-mass is consequently constrained to M-0(*,E)/M approximate to 2.22 +/- 0.35 in symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) and the E-mass of neutrons is smaller than that of protons in neutron-rich matter. Moreover, the average depletion of the nucleon Fermi sea increases (decreases) approximately linearly with the isospin asymmetry delta according to kappa(p/n) approximate to 0.21 +/- 0.06 +/- (0.19 +/- 0.08)delta for protons (neutrons). These results will help improve our knowledge about the space-time non-locality of the single-nucleon potential in neutron-rich nucleonic matter Useful in both nuclear physics and astrophysics. Abstract:Sophisticated high-energy and large momentum-transfer scattering experiments combined with ab-initio calculations can reveal the short-distance behavior of nucleon pairs in nuclei. On an opposite energy and resolution scale, elastic electron scattering experiments are used to extract the charge density and charge radius of different nuclei. We show that even though the charge density has no obvious connection with nuclear short-range correlations, it can be used to extract properties of such correlations. This is accomplished by using the nuclear contact formalism to derive a relation between the charge density and the proton-proton nuclear contacts that describe the probability of two protons being at close proximity. With this relation, the values of the proton-proton contacts are extracted for various nuclei using only the nuclear charge density and a solution of the two-nucleon Schroedinger equation as inputs. For symmetric nuclei, the proton-neutron contacts can also be extracted from the charge density. Good agreement is obtained with previous extractions of the nuclear contacts. These results imply that one can predict (with reasonably good accuracy) the results of high-energy and large momentum-transfer electron-scattering experiments and ab-initio calculations of high momentum tails using only experimental data of elastic scattering experiments.

Abstract:Strong correlation effects, such as a dramatic increase in the effective mass of the carriers of electricity, recently observed in the low density electron gas have provided spectacular support for the existence of a sharp metal-insulator transitions in dilute two dimensional electron gases. Here we show that strong correlations, normally expected only for narrow integer filled bands, can be effectively enhanced even far away from integer filling, due to incipient charge ordering driven by non-local Coulomb interactions. This general mechanism is illustrated by solving an extended Hubbard model using dynamical mean-field theory. Our findings account for the key aspects of the experimental phase diagram, and reconcile the early view points of Wigner and Mott. The interplay of short range charge order and local correlations should result in a three peak structure in the spectral function of the electrons which should be observable in tunneling and optical spectroscopy.

Robust correlation between binding energies and charge radii of mirror nuclei

Abstract:Using the charge density from the two-parameter Fermi model, a robust and nontrival correlation between binding energis and charge radii of mirror nuclei is newly proposed. This correlation enables simple yet reliable predictions of the nuclear mass and charge radius of proton-rich nuclei. The validity of these predictions is demonstrated by comparing the predicted binding energies and charge radii with experimental data and predictions from other models. All 197 predicted binding energies and 199 charge radii involved in the comparisons are tabulated in the Supplemental Materials of this paper. The noticeable discrepancies are attributed to the large asymmetry in charge densities of mirror nuclei, suggesting that the proposed correlation could be a sensitive probe for local structural anomaly, such as shell closure and proton halo. The difference in mass dependence of charge radii near the proton dripline compared to those along the $\beta$-stability line supports the validity of our prediction method.

Abstract:In this paper we study low-lying states of atomic nuclei with random interactions, within the framework of the nuclear shell model. The distributions of R-6 versus R-4 (where R-I = E-I1(+) / E-21(+)), empirical proton-neutron interaction, and charge radius are investigated by using a two-body random ensemble. The Mallmann plot exhibits statistical correlations between R-6 and R-4. The proton-neutron interaction between the last proton and the last neutron in even-A nuclei is found to be stronger than that in odd-A nuclei, and that in N = Z nuclei is even stronger. Simple relations of nuclear charge radii for neighboring nuclei are found to survive remarkably for the random ensemble.

Abstract:We carry out a systematic study of electric dipole mode (E1) for neutron-rich isotopes from nickel (Z=28) to tin (Z=50) using a time-dependent mean-field theory. Our time-dependent scheme is the canonical-basis time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory which can self-consistently describe nuclear dynamics with pairing correlation. We focus our discussion on the pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) and E1 polarizability. The correlation between neutron-skin thickness and PDR strongly depends on the neutron number, but the correlation between the skin thickness and E1 polarizability is much more stable.

Magnetic dipole transition in proton-deuteron radiative capture at BBN energies within potential model

Abstract:The $pd$ radiative capture reaction plays a vital role in Big Bang nucleosynthesis and stellar proton-proton chain. The study of the low-energy reaction is challenging in both experiments and theories. Using the framework of potential model, we analyze $pd$ radiative capture below 1 MeV for both electric dipole ($E1$) and magnetic dipole ($M1$) transitions. The obtained astrophysical $S$ factors agree well with recent results, especially at energies relevant to sensitive deuterium abundance. The calculated reaction rate shows good agreement, with less than a 5\% difference compared to recent works. The extrapolated value for $S(0)$ including both transitions is determined to be $0.211 \pm 0.016$ eV b. A comparison with experimental data using the $\chi^2$ test reveals the sensitivity of the $M1$ cross section at low energies to the scattering potential depth.

Abstract:In this paper we study patterns of nuclear charge radii from three perspectives. The first is based on the so-called $\ensuremath{\delta}{R}_{i\mathrm{n}\ensuremath{-}j\mathrm{p}}$ relations, the root-mean-square deviation of which was reported to be 0.0072 fm for nuclei with both neutron number $N$ and proton number $Z$ $\ensuremath{\ge}8$, and are pointed out here to have actually a much smaller value, which is $\ensuremath{\approx}0.003$ fm for most nuclei with $N\ensuremath{\ge}28$ and $Z\ensuremath{\ge}28$. The second and third perspectives are new relations proposed in this paper. One is called the $\ensuremath{\delta}{R}_{\mathrm{nn}}$ relation enlightened from the so-called ``nonpairing'' interaction $\ensuremath{\delta}{V}_{\mathrm{nn}}$ in studies of nuclear binding energies, and the other is a linear dependence of nuclear charge radii in terms of valence nucleon numbers. All these relations are very accurate in most regions, and sizable deviations from these relations could be used to shed light on structural evolutions such as phase transitions and shape coexistence. About 830 unknown nuclear charge radii are enclosed in our Supplemental Material in this paper, with theoretical uncertainty below 0.03 fm.
