Abstract:We show confluence of a conditional term rewriting system CL-pc${}^1$, which is an extension of Combinatory Logic by Boolean constants. This solves problem 15 from the RTA list of open problems. The proof has been fully formalised in the Coq proof assistant.

Abstract:Numerous confluence criteria for plain term rewrite systems are known. For logically constrained rewrite system, an attractive extension of term rewriting in which rules are equipped with logical constraints, much less is known. In this paper we extend the strongly-closed and (almost) parallel-closed critical pair criteria of Huet and Toyama to the logically constrained setting. We discuss the challenges for automation and present crest, a new tool for logically constrained rewriting in which the confluence criteria are implemented, together with experimental data.

Syntactic Confluence Criteria for Positive/Negative-Conditional Term Rewriting Systems

Abstract:We study the combination of the following already known ideas for showing confluence of unconditional or conditional term rewriting systems into practically more useful confluence criteria for conditional systems: Our syntactical separation into constructor and non-constructor symbols, Huet's introduction and Toyama's generalization of parallel closedness for non-noetherian unconditional systems, the use of shallow confluence for proving confluence of noetherian and non-noetherian conditional systems, the idea that certain kinds of limited confluence can be assumed for checking the fulfilledness or infeasibility of the conditions of conditional critical pairs, and the idea that (when termination is given) only prime superpositions have to be considered and certain normalization restrictions can be applied for the substitutions fulfilling the conditions of conditional critical pairs. Besides combining and improving already known methods, we present the following new ideas and results: We strengthen the criterion for overlay joinable noetherian systems, and, by using the expressiveness of our syntactical separation into constructor and non-constructor symbols, we are able to present criteria for level confluence that are not criteria for shallow confluence actually and also able to weaken the severe requirement of normality (stiffened with left-linearity) in the criteria for shallow confluence of noetherian and non-noetherian conditional systems to the easily satisfied requirement of quasi-normality. Finally, the whole paper may also give a practically useful overview of the syntactical means for showing confluence of conditional term rewriting systems.

Abstract:We show that (local) confluence of terminating locally constrained rewrite systems is undecidable, even when the underlying theory is decidable. Several confluence criteria for logically constrained rewrite systems are known. These were obtained by replaying existing proofs for plain term rewrite systems in a constrained setting, involving a non-trivial effort. We present a simple transformation from logically constrained rewrite systems to term rewrite systems such that critical pairs of the latter correspond to constrained critical pairs of the former. The usefulness of the transformation is illustrated by lifting the advanced confluence results based on (almost) development closed critical pairs as well as on parallel critical pairs to the constrained setting.

On Proving Confluence Modulo Equivalence for Constraint Handling Rules

Abstract:Previous results on proving confluence for Constraint Handling Rules are extended in two ways in order to allow a larger and more realistic class of CHR programs to be considered confluent. Firstly, we introduce the relaxed notion of confluence modulo equivalence into the context of CHR: while confluence for a terminating program means that all alternative derivations for a query lead to the exact same final state, confluence modulo equivalence only requires the final states to be equivalent with respect to an equivalence relation tailored for the given program. Secondly, we allow non-logical built-in predicates such as var/1 and incomplete ones such as is/2, that are ignored in previous work on confluence. To this end, a new operational semantics for CHR is developed which includes such predicates. In addition, this semantics differs from earlier approaches by its simplicity without loss of generality, and it may also be recommended for future studies of CHR. For the purely logical subset of CHR, proofs can be expressed in first-order logic, that we show is not sufficient in the present case. We have introduced a formal meta-language that allows reasoning about abstract states and derivations with meta-level restrictions that reflect the non-logical and incomplete predicates. This language represents subproofs as diagrams, which facilitates a systematic enumeration of proof cases, pointing forward to a mechanical support for such proofs.

Abstract:In this paper, we address the problem of the (reactive) realizability of specifications of theories richer than Booleans, including arithmetic theories. Our approach transforms theory specifications into purely Boolean specifications by (1) substituting theory literals by Boolean variables, and (2) computing an additional Boolean requirement that captures the dependencies between the new variables imposed by the literals. The resulting specification can be passed to existing Boolean off-the-shelf realizability tools, and is realizable if and only if the original specification is realizable. The first contribution is a brute-force version of our method, which requires a number of SMT queries that is doubly exponential in the number of input literals. Then, we present a faster method that exploits a nested encoding of the search for the extra requirement and uses SAT solving for faster traversing the search space and uses SMT queries internally. Another contribution is a prototype in Z3-Python. Finally, we report an empirical evaluation using specifications inspired in real industrial cases. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first method that succeeds in non-Boolean LTL realizability.
A propositional cirquent calculus for computability logic

Abstract:Cirquent calculus is a proof system with inherent ability to account for sharing subcomponents in logical expressions. Within its framework, this article constructs an axiomatization CL18 of the basic propositional fragment of computability logic the game-semantically conceived logic of computational resources and tasks. The nonlogical atoms of this fragment represent arbitrary so called static games, and the connectives of its logical vocabulary are negation and the parallel and choice versions of conjunction and disjunction. The main technical result of the article is a proof of the soundness and completeness of CL18 with respect to the semantics of computability logic.

Together with the termination result proved therein, the generalized coherence theorem for linear category is established. Abstract:We develop a classical propositional logic for reasoning about combinatory logic. We define its syntax, axiomatic system and semantics. The syntax and axiomatic system are presented based on classical propositional logic, with typed combinatory terms as basic propositions, along with the semantics based on applicative structures extended with special elements corresponding to primitive combinators. Both the equational theory of untyped combinatory logic and the proposed axiomatic system are proved to be sound and complete w.r.t. the given semantics. In addition, we prove that combinatory logic is sound and complete w.r.t. the given semantics.
A Reduction-Preserving Completion for Proving Confluence of Non-Terminating Term Rewriting Systems

Abstract:We give a method to prove confluence of term rewriting systems that contain non-terminating rewrite rules such as commutativity and associativity. Usually, confluence of term rewriting systems containing such rules is proved by treating them as equational term rewriting systems and considering E-critical pairs and/or termination modulo E. In contrast, our method is based solely on usual critical pairs and it also (partially) works even if the system is not terminating modulo E. We first present confluence criteria for term rewriting systems whose rewrite rules can be partitioned into a terminating part and a possibly non-terminating part. We then give a reduction-preserving completion procedure so that the applicability of the criteria is enhanced. In contrast to the well-known Knuth-Bendix completion procedure which preserves the equivalence relation of the system, our completion procedure preserves the reduction relation of the system, by which confluence of the original system is inferred from that of the completed system.

On linear rewriting systems for Boolean logic and some applications to proof theory

Abstract:Linear rules have played an increasing role in structural proof theory in recent years. It has been observed that the set of all sound linear inference rules in Boolean logic is already coNP-complete, i.e. that every Boolean tautology can be written as a (left- and right-)linear rewrite rule. In this paper we study properties of systems consisting only of linear inferences. Our main result is that the length of any 'nontrivial' derivation in such a system is bound by a polynomial. As a consequence there is no polynomial-time decidable sound and complete system of linear inferences, unless coNP=NP. We draw tools and concepts from term rewriting, Boolean function theory and graph theory in order to access some required intermediate results. At the same time we make several connections between these areas that, to our knowledge, have not yet been presented and constitute a rich theoretical framework for reasoning about linear TRSs for Boolean logic.

Abstract:We introduce layer systems for proving generalizations of the modularity of confluence for first-order rewrite systems. Layer systems specify how terms can be divided into layers. We establish structural conditions on those systems that imply confluence. Our abstract framework covers known results like modularity, many-sorted persistence, layer-preservation and currying. We present a counterexample to an extension of persistence to order-sorted rewriting and derive new sufficient conditions for the extension to hold. All our proofs are constructive.

Axiomatization of Boolean Connexive Logics with syncategorematic negation and modalities

Abstract:In the article we investigate three classes of extended Boolean Connexive Logics. Two of them are extensions of Modal and non-Modal Boolean Connexive Logics with a property of closure under an arbitrary number of negations. The remaining one is an extension of Modal Boolean Connexive Logic with a property of closure under the function of demodalization. In our work we provide a formal presentation of mentioned properties and axiom schemata that allow us to incorporate them into Hilbert-style calculi. The presented axiomatic systems are provided with proofs of soundness, completeness, and decidability. The properties of closure under negation and demodalization are motivated by the syncategorematic view on the connectives of negation and modalities, which is discussed in the paper.

Bi-intermediate logics of trees and co-trees

Abstract:A bi-Heyting algebra validates the Gödel-Dummett axiom $(p\to q)\vee (q\to p)$ iff the poset of its prime filters is a disjoint union of co-trees (i.e., order duals of trees). Bi-Heyting algebras of this kind are called bi-Gödel algebras and form a variety that algebraizes the extension $\mathsf{bi}$-$\mathsf{LC}$ of bi-intuitionistic logic axiomatized by the Gödel-Dummett axiom. In this paper we initiate the study of the lattice $\Lambda(\mathsf{bi}$-$\mathsf{LC})$ of extensions of $\mathsf{bi}$-$\mathsf{LC}$. We develop the methods of Jankov-style formulas for bi-Gödel algebras and use them to prove that there are exactly continuum many extensions of $\mathsf{bi}$-$\mathsf{LC}$. We also show that all these extensions can be uniformly axiomatized by canonical formulas. Our main result is a characterization of the locally tabular extensions of $\mathsf{bi}$-$\mathsf{LC}$. We introduce a sequence of co-trees, called the finite combs, and show that a logic in $\mathsf{bi}$-$\mathsf{LC}$ is locally tabular iff it contains at least one of the Jankov formulas associated with the finite combs. It follows that there exists the greatest non-locally tabular extension of $\mathsf{bi}$-$\mathsf{LC}$ and consequently, a unique pre-locally tabular extension of $\mathsf{bi}$-$\mathsf{LC}$. These results contrast with the case of the intermediate logic axiomatized by the Gödel-Dummett axiom, which is known to have only countably many extensions, all of which are locally tabular.

Abstract:We investigate the combination of fragments of classical logic as a way of conservatively extending a given Boolean logic by the addition of new connectives, and we precisely characterize the circumstances in which such a combination produces the corresponding fragment of classical logic over the signature containing connectives from both fragments given as input. If the thereby produced combined fragment is only incompletely characterized by the components given as input, this means that connectives from one component need to interact with connectives from the other component, giving rise to interaction principles. The main contributions strongly rely on the (well-known) description of the 2-valued clones made by Post, on the (not so well-known) axiomatization procedures for 2-valued matrices laid out by Rautenberg, and on Avron's non-deterministic matrices, which have (recently) been used to produce a significant advance on the understanding of the semantics of fibring.

Abstract:The confluence of untyped lambda-calculus with unconditional rewriting has already been studied in various directions. In this paper, we investigate the confluence of lambda-calculus with conditional rewriting and provide general results in two directions. First, when conditional rules are algebraic. This extends results of Muller and Dougherty for unconditional rewriting. Two cases are considered, whether beta-reduction is allowed or not in the evaluation of conditions. Moreover, Dougherty's result is improved from the assumption of strongly normalizing beta-reduction to weakly normalizing beta-reduction. We also provide examples showing that outside these conditions, modularity of confluence is difficult to achieve. Second, we go beyond the algebraic framework and get new confluence results using an extended notion of orthogonality that takes advantage of the conditional part of rewrite rules.

Abstract:The work is devoted to Computability Logic (CoL) -- the philosophical/mathematical platform and long-term project for redeveloping classical logic after replacing truth} by computability in its underlying semantics (see <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~giorgi/cl.html" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>). This article elaborates some basic complexity theory for the CoL framework. Then it proves soundness and completeness for the deductive system CL12 with respect to the semantics of CoL, including the version of the latter based on polynomial time computability instead of computability-in-principle. CL12 is a sequent calculus system, where the meaning of a sequent intuitively can be characterized as "the succedent is algorithmically reducible to the antecedent", and where formulas are built from predicate letters, function letters, variables, constants, identity, negation, parallel and choice connectives, and blind and choice quantifiers. A case is made that CL12 is an adequate logical basis for constructive applied theories, including complexity-oriented ones.

Abstract:We investigate the possibility of extending the non-functionally complete logic of a collection of Boolean connectives by the addition of further Boolean connectives that make the resulting set of connectives functionally complete. More precisely, we will be interested in checking whether an axiomatization for Classical Propositional Logic may be produced by merging Hilbert-style calculi for two disjoint incomplete fragments of it. We will prove that the answer to that problem is a negative one, unless one of the components includes only top-like connectives.

Abstract:This work, shows how propositional resolution can be generalized to obtain a resolution proof system for constrained pseudo-propositional logic (CPPL), which is an extension resulted from inserting the natural numbers with few constraints symbols into the alphabet of propositional logic and adjusting the underling language accordingly. Unlike the construction of CNF formulas which are restricted to a finite set of clauses, the extended CPPL does not require the corresponding set to be finite. Although this restriction is made dispensable, this work presents a constructive proof showing that the generalized resolution for CPPL is sound and complete. As a marginal result, this implies that propositional resolution is also sound and complete for formulas with even infinite set of clauses.

Abstract:In this paper we give a new proof for the completeness of infinite valued propositional Łukasiewicz logic introduced by Łukasiewicz and Tarski in 1930. Our approach employs a Hilbert-style proof that relies on the concept of maximal consistent extensions, and unlike classical logic, in this context, the maximal extensions are not required to include all formulas or their negations. To illustrate this point, we provide examples of such formulas.

Abstract:Logically constrained term rewriting is a relatively new formalism where rules are equipped with constraints over some arbitrary theory. Although there are many recent advances with respect to rewriting induction, completion, complexity analysis and confluence analysis for logically constrained term rewriting, these works solely focus on the syntactic side of the formalism lacking detailed investigations on semantics. In this paper, we investigate a semantic side of logically constrained term rewriting. To this end, we first define constrained equations, constrained equational theories and validity of the former based on the latter. After presenting the relationship of validity and conversion of rewriting, we then construct a sound inference system to prove validity of constrained equations in constrained equational theories. Finally, we give an algebraic semantics, which enables one to establish invalidity of constrained equations in constrained equational theories. This algebraic semantics derive a new notion of consistency for constrained equational theories.
