Abstract:Given a closed Riemannian manifold, we show how to close an orbit of the geodesic flow by a small perturbation of the metric in the $C^1$ topology.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the critical metrics with cyclic parallel Ricci tensor for volume functional on manifolds with boundary. We show such metric is isometric to a geodesic ball in a simply connected space form $\mathbb {R}^n$, $\mathbb {H}^n$ or $\mathbb {S}^n$ under some extra conditions.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a complete Riemannian manifold. Suppose $M$ contains a bounded, concave, open set $U$ with $C^0$ boundary. Moreover, we assume that $M\setminus U$ is connected and either the relative homotopy set $\pi_1(M,M\setminus U)=0$ or the image of the homomorphism $\pi_1(M\setminus U)\rightarrow \pi_1(M)$ (induced by the inclusion $M\setminus U\hookrightarrow M$) is a finite index subgroup or a normal subgroup of $\pi_1(M)$ or the relative homology group $H_1(M,M\setminus U)\neq 0$. Then there exists a non-trivial closed geodesic on $M$. This partially proves a conjecture of Chambers, Liokumovich, Nabutovsky and Rotman.

Abstract:We show that for a generic Riemannian or reversible Finsler metric on a compact differentiable manifold $M$ of dimension at least three all closed geodesics are simple and do not intersect each other. Using results by Contreras~\cite{C2010} \cite{C2011} this shows that for a generic Riemannian metric on a compact and simply-connected manifold all closed geodesics are simple and the number $N(t)$ of geometrically distinct closed geodesics of length $\le t$ grows exponentially.

Abstract:We prove that, on any closed manifold of dimension at least two with non-trivial first Betti number, a $C^\infty$ generic Riemannian metric has infinitely many closed geodesics, and indeed closed geodesics of arbitrarily large length. We derive this existence result combining a theorem of Mañé together with the following new theorem of independent interest: the existence of minimal closed geodesics, in the sense of Aubry-Mather theory, implies the existence of a transverse homoclinic, and thus of a horseshoe, for the geodesic flow of a suitable $C^\infty$-close Riemannian metric.

Abstract:We study the behaviour of geodesics on a Riemannian manifold near a generalized conical or cuspidal singularity. We show that geodesics entering a small neighbourhood of the singularity either hit the singularity or approach it to a smallest distance $\delta$ and then move away from it, winding around the singularity a number of times. We study the limiting behaviour $\delta\to0$ in the second case. In the cuspidal case the number of windings goes to infinity as $\delta\to0$, and we compute the precise asymptotic behaviour of this number. The asymptotics have explicitly given leading term determined by the warping factor that describes the type of cuspidal singularity. We also discuss in some detail the relation between differential and metric notions of conical and cuspidal singularities.

Abstract:This paper studios the existence of closed geodesics in the homotopy class of a given closed curve. Let M be a complete Riemannian manifold without boundary, f∈C~1(S~1, M). Look at S~1 as [0, 2π]/{0, 2π}. The following results are proved: A. The initial value problem of heat equation _if_t=τ(f_i), f_0=f always admits a global solution. B. (Existence of closed geodesics). If there exists a compact set KM such that f(S~1)∩K≠φ and E(f)≤(1/π)l(K)~2, then there exists a closed geodesic homotopic to f. If then the closed geodesic is minimal. C. Some estimates about injective radius are obtained. Some example is found showing that the inequalities in B are sharp.

Abstract:We employ the curve shortening flow to establish three new results on the dynamics of geodesic flows of closed Riemannian surfaces. The first one is the stability, under $C^0$-small perturbations of the Riemannian metric, of certain flat links of closed geodesics. The second one is a forced existence theorem for orientable closed Riemannian surfaces: for surfaces of positive genus, the existence of a contractible simple closed geodesic $\gamma$ forces the existence of infinitely many closed geodesics intersecting $\gamma$ in every primitive free homotopy class of loops; for the 2-sphere, the existence of two disjoint simple closed geodesics forces the existence of a third one intersecting both. The final result asserts the existence of Birkhoff sections for the geodesic flow of any closed orientable Riemannian surface.

Abstract:We prove that a $C^2$-generic Riemannian metric on a closed surface has either an elliptic closed geodesic or an Anosov geodesic flow. As a consequence, we prove the $C^2$-stability conjecture for Riemannian geodesic flows of closed surfaces: a $C^2$-structurally stable Riemannian geodesic flow of a closed surface is Anosov. In order to prove these statements, we establish a general result that may be of independent interest and provides sufficient conditions for a Reeb flow of a closed 3-manifold to be Anosov.

Abstract: In this paper, we develop an approach to the problem of closing lemma based on KAM normal form. The new approach differs from existing $C^1$ perturbation approach and spectral approach, and can handle the high regularity, high dimensional cases and even Riemannian metric perturbations. Moreover, the proof is constructive and effective. We apply the method to the original nearly integrable setting of Poincar\'e and confirm several old and new conjectures with weak formulations. First, for Poincar\'e's original setting of nearly integrable systems, we prove that for typical perturbations, periodic orbits are asymptotically dense as the size of perturbation tends to zero. Second, we prove that typical smooth perturbation of the geodesic flow on the flat torus has asymptotically dense periodic orbits, which partially solves an open problem since Pugh-Robinson's $C^1$-closing lemma. Third, we prove that for typical Hamiltonian or contact perturbation of the geodesic flows of the ellipsoid has asymptotically dense orbit on the energy level, which enhances the recent researches on strong closing lemma, and also confirms partially a conjecture of Fish-Hofer in this setting. We also discuss the relation of our models to the recent researches on many-body localization in physics.

Abstract:For every r is an element of N->= 2 boolean OR {infinity} , we prove a C (R) -orbit connecting lemma for dynamically coherent and plaque expansive partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms with one-dimensional orientation preserving center bundle. To be precise, for such a diffeomorphism f, if a point y is chain attainable from x through pseudo-orbits, then for any neighborhood U of x and any neighborhood V of y, there exist true orbits from U to V by arbitrarily C (R) -small perturbations. As a consequence, we prove that for C-r -generic diffeomorphisms in this class, periodic points are dense in the chain recurrent set, and chain transitivity implies transitivity.
Closed geodesics on compact Lorentzian solvmanifolds

Abstract:The aim of this work is the study of geodesics on Lorentzian homogeneous spaces of the form $M=G/\Lambda$, where $G$ is a solvable Lie group endowed with a bi-invariant Lorentzian metric and $\Lambda < G$ is a cocompact lattice. Conditions to assert closedness of light, time or spacelike geodesics on the compact quotient spaces are given. This study implicitly requires additional information about the lattices in each case. We found conditions for which every lightlight geodesic on the quotient space is closed. And more important, this situation depends on the lattice. Moreover, even in dimension four, there are examples of compact solvmanifolds for which not every lightlike geodesic is closed. For time and spacelike geodesics, the conclusion are different. Finally, we study isometry groups of those compact spaces and show some computations in dimension six.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that every locally minimizing curve with constant speed in a prox-regular subset of a Riemannian manifold is a weak geodesic. Moreover, it is shown that under certain assumptions, every weak geodesic is locally minimizing. Furthermore, a notion of closed weak geodesics on prox-regular sets is introduced and a characterization of these curves as nonsmooth critical points of the energy functional is presented.

Abstract:In this article, we prove a generalization of our previous result in [12]. In particular, we show that for an $n$-dimensional, simply connected Riemannian manifold with diameter $D$ and volume $V$. Suppose that $M$ admits a good cover consisting of $N$ elements. Then, the length of a shortest closed geodesic on $M$ is bounded by some function that only depends on $V, D$, and $N$.
