Abstract:We advance a doxastic interpretation for many of the logical connectives considered in Dependence Logic and in its extensions, and we argue that Team Semantics is a natural framework for reasoning about beliefs and belief updates.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we introduce a logic based on team semantics, called $\mathbf {FOT} $ , whose expressive power is elementary, i.e., coincides with first-order logic both on the level of sentences and (possibly open) formulas, and we also show that a sublogic of $\mathbf {FOT} $ , called $\mathbf {FOT}^{\downarrow } $ , captures exactly downward closed elementary (or first-order) team properties. Abstract:This research note provides novel results concerning the incremental computation of the stable and ideal argumentation semantics, by extending the division-based method presented in [1] and correcting a flawed claim given there. As a basis for these results, the note synthetically reviews and discusses the topology-related properties of directionality and SCC-recursiveness in abstract argumentation semantics and analyzes their relationships with the division-based method.

Abstract:Since the introduction by Hodges, and refinement by V\"a\"an\"anen, team semantic constructions have been used to generate expressively enriched logics still conserving nice properties, such as compactness or decidability. In contrast, these logics fail to be substitutional, limiting any algebraic treatment, and rendering schematic uniform proof systems impossible. This shortcoming can be attributed to the flatness principle, commonly adhered to when generating team semantics. Investigating the formation of team semantics from algebraic semantics, and disregarding the flatness principle, we present the logic of teams, LT, a substitutional logic for which important propositional team logics are axiomatisable as fragments. Starting from classical propositional logic and Boolean algebras, we give semantics for LT by considering the algebras that are powersets of Boolean algebras B, equipped with internal (point-wise) and external (set-theoretic) connectives. Furthermore, we present a well-motivated complete and sound labelled natural deduction system for LT.

Abstract:Several authors have recently defined intuitionistic logic based on team semantics (tIPC). In this paper we provide two alternative approaches to intermediate logics in the team semantics setting. We do this by modifying tIPC with axioms written with two different versions of disjunction in the logic, a local one and global one. We prove a characterization theorem in the first approach and we introduce a generalized team semantics in the second one.

Abstract:The famous van Benthem theorem states that modal logic corresponds exactly to the fragment of first-order logic that is invariant under bisimulation. In this article we prove an exact analogue of this theorem in the framework of modal dependence logic MDL and team semantics. We show that modal team logic MTL, extending MDL by classical negation, captures exactly the FO-definable bisimulation invariant properties of Kripke structures and teams. We also compare the expressive power of MTL to most of the variants and extensions of MDL recently studied in the area.

Abstract:The dual or game-theoretical negation $\lnot$ of independence-friendly logic (IF) and dependence logic (D) exhibits an extreme degree of semantic indeterminacy in that for any pair of sentences $\phi$ and $\psi$ of IF/D, if $\phi$ and $\psi$ are incompatible in the sense that they share no models, there is a sentence $\theta$ of IF/D such that $\phi\equiv \theta$ and $\psi\equiv \lnot \theta$ (as shown originally by Burgess in the equivalent context of the prenex fragment of Henkin quantifier logic). We show that by adjusting the notion of incompatibility employed, analogues of this result can be established for a number of modal and propositional team logics, including Aloni's bilateral state-based modal logic, Hawke and Steinert-Threlkeld's semantic expressivist logic for epistemic modals, as well as propositional dependence logic with the dual negation. Together with its converse, a result of this type can be seen as an expressive completeness theorem with respect to the relevant incompatibility notion; we formulate a notion of expressive completeness for pairs of properties to make this precise.

Abstract:The languages of logics based on team semantics typically only allow atomic negation or restricted negation. In this paper, we explore propositional team-based logics with full (intuitionistic) negation. We demonstrate that including full intutionistic negation does not complicate the axiomatization of propositional team-based logics with the downward closure property. We also review known expressive completeness results for these logics, highlighting how relevant complemented properties are expressed in propositional dependence logic without directly using negation. Building on these insights, we also prove a new result: propositional logic extended with both dependence and inclusion atoms is expressively complete.

Abstract:We study the expressive power of various modal logics with team semantics. We show that exactly the properties of teams that are downward closed and closed under team k-bisimulation, for some finite k, are definable in modal logic extended with intuitionistic disjunction. Furthermore, we show that the expressive power of modal logic with intuitionistic disjunction and extended modal dependence logic coincide. Finally we establish that any translation from extended modal dependence logic into modal logic with intuitionistic disjunction increases the size of some formulas exponentially.

Abstract:We introduce and develop a set-based semantics for asynchronous TeamLTL. We consider two canonical logics in this setting: the extensions of TeamLTL by the Boolean disjunction and by the Boolean negation. We establish fascinating connections between the original semantics based on multisets and the new set-based semantics as well as show one of the first positive complexity theoretic results in the temporal team semantics setting. In particular we show that both logics enjoy normal forms that can be utilised to obtain results related to expressivity and complexity (decidability) of the new logics. We also relate and apply our results to recently defined logics whose asynchronicity is formalized via time evaluation functions.

Synchronous Team Semantics for Temporal Logics

Abstract:We present team semantics for two of the most important linear and branching time specification languages, Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) and Computation Tree Logic (CTL). With team semantics, LTL is able to express hyperproperties, which have in the last decade been identified as a key concept in the verification of information flow properties. We study basic properties of the logic and classify the computational complexity of its satisfiability, path, and model checking problem. Further, we examine how extensions of the basic logic react to adding additional atomic operators. Finally, we compare its expressivity to the one of HyperLTL, another recently introduced logic for hyperproperties. Our results show that LTL with team semantics is a viable alternative to HyperLTL, which complements the expressivity of HyperLTL and has partially better algorithmic properties. For CTL with team semantics, we investigate the computational complexity of the satisfiability and model checking problem. The satisfiability problem is shown to be EXPTIME-complete while we show that model checking is PSPACE-complete.

Abstract:We examine the relationship between Dependence Logic and game logics. A variant of Dynamic Game Logic, called Transition Logic, is developed, and we show that its relationship with Dependence Logic is comparable to the one between First-Order Logic and Dynamic Game Logic discussed by van Benthem. This suggests a new perspective on the interpretation of Dependence Logic formulas, in terms of assertions about reachability in games of im- perfect information against Nature. We then capitalize on this intuition by developing expressively equivalent variants of Dependence Logic in which this interpretation is taken to the foreground.

Abstract:This paper considers KLM-style preferential non-monotonic reasoning in the setting of propositional team semantics. We show that team-based propositional logics naturally give rise to cumulative non-monotonic entailment relations. Motivated by the non-classical interpretation of disjunction in team semantics, we give a precise characterization for preferential models for propositional dependence logic satisfying all of System P postulates. Furthermore, we show how classical entailment and dependence logic entailment can be expressed in terms of non-trivial preferential models.

Abstract:Modal dependence logics are modal logics defined on the basis of team semantics and have the downward closure property. In this paper, we introduce sound and complete deduction systems for the major modal dependence logics, especially those with intuitionistic connectives in their languages. We also establish a concrete connection between team semantics and single-world semantics, and show that modal dependence logics can be interpreted as variants of intuitionistic modal logics.

Abstract:We decompose a nonmonotonic inference Gamma (sic) alpha into two stages: going forth to deduce all default conclusions in a logic system named DC (short for Default Conclusions), and drawing back less preferable conclusions in the face of conflicting default conclusions, based on a binary "more preferable" relation defined on those subformulas of that are also its deductive consequences. Under the possible-world semantics framework, we construct a set selection function and build up a theory of semantics, as a variant of traditional selection function semantics. We prove that the underlying logic system DC is sound and complete with respect to set selection function semantics. Using this two-layer mechanism, we account for benchmark examples including the Nixon Diamond and the Penguin Principle.

Abstract:In this paper we show how the defense relation among abstract arguments can be used to encode the reasons for accepting arguments. After introducing a novel notion of defenses and defense graphs, we propose a defense semantics together with a new notion of defense equivalence of argument graphs, and compare defense equivalence with standard equivalence and strong equivalence, respectively. Then, based on defense semantics, we define two kinds of reasons for accepting arguments, i.e., direct reasons and root reasons, and a notion of root equivalence of argument graphs. Finally, we show how the notion of root equivalence can be used in argumentation summarization.

Abstract:Linear temporal logic (LTL) is used in system verification to write formal specifications for reactive systems. However, some relevant properties, e.g. non-inference in information flow security, cannot be expressed in LTL. A class of such properties that has recently received ample attention is known as hyperproperties. There are two major streams in the research regarding capturing hyperproperties, namely hyperlogics, which extend LTL with trace quantifiers (HyperLTL), and logics that employ team semantics, extending truth to sets of traces. In this article we explore the relation between asynchronous LTL under set-based team semantics (TeamLTL) and HyperLTL. In particular we consider the extensions of TeamLTL with the Boolean disjunction and a fragment of the extension of TeamLTL with the Boolean negation, where the negation cannot occur in the left-hand side of the Until-operator or within the Global-operator. We show that TeamLTL extended with the Boolean disjunction is equi-expressive with the positive Boolean closure of HyperLTL restricted to one universal quantifier, while the left-downward closed fragment of TeamLTL extended with the Boolean negation is expressively equivalent with the Boolean closure of HyperLTL restricted to one universal quantifier.

Temporal Team Semantics Revisited

Abstract:Temporal logics have been studied as an approach to the specification of hyperproperties, resulting in the conception of "hyperlogics". With a few recent exceptions, the hyperlogics thus far developed can only relate different traces of a transition system synchronously. However, important information is contained in the relation between different points in their asynchronous interaction. To specify such "asynchronous hyperproperties", new trace quantifier based hyperlogics have been developed. Yet, hyperlogics with trace quantification cannot express certain requirements that describe the relationships between all executions of a system. Also, these logics induce model checking problems (MC) with prohibitively high complexity costs in the number of quantifier alternations. We study an alternative approach to asynchronous hyperproperties by introducing a novel foundation of temporal team semantics. Team semantics is a logical framework that specifies properties of sets of traces of unbounded size directly, and thus does not have the same limitation as the quantifier based logics mentioned above. We consider temporal team logics which employ quantification over so-called "time evaluation functions" (TEFs) controlling the asynchronous progress of traces instead of quantification over traces. TEFs constitute a novel approach to defining expressive logics for hyperproperties where diverse asynchronous interactions between computations can be formalised and enforced. We show embeddings of synchronous TeamLTL into our new logics. We show that MC for some TeamCTL fragment is highly undecidable. We present a translation from TeamCTL* to Alternating Asynchronous Büchi Automata, and obtain decidability results for the path checking problem and restrictions of MC and SAT. Our translation constitutes the first approach to team semantics based on automata-theoretic methods.
