Abstract:Let M be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension n > 2. The k-curvature, for k = 1,2,...,n, is defined as the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tenser. The k-Yamabe problem is to prove the existence of a conformal metric whose k-curvature is a constant. When k = 1, it reduces to the well-known Yamabe problem. Under the assumption that the metric is admissible, the existence of solutions is known for the case k = 2, n = 4, for locally conformally flat manifolds and for the cases k > n/2. In this paper we prove the solvability of the k-Yamabe problem in the remaining cases k ≤ n/2, under the hypothesis that the problem is variational. This includes all of the cases k = 2 as well as the locally conformally flat case.

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of closed convex hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space Rn+1 such that a Weingarten curvature, regarded as a function of their unit normal, is equal to a given positive function on the unit sphere Sn. Two classical problems of this type, namely the Christoffel problem [6] and the Minkowski problem [16], which address respectively the cases of harmonic and Gauss curvature, were completely solved in the 1970’s [7,9,17]. Besides the harmonic and Gauss curvatures, the most interesting Weingarten curvatures are probably the mean curvature, or more generally the k-curvatures (1 ≤ k ≤ n)

The k-Yamabe problem is to prove the existence of a conformal metric whose k-curvature is a constant. When k = 1, it reduces to the well-known Yamabe problem. Under the assumption that the metric is admissible, the existence of solutions to the k-Yamabe problem was recently proved by Gursky and Viaclovsky for k > n 2 . In this paper we prove the existence of solutions for the remaining cases 2 ≤ k ≤ n 2 , assuming that the equation is variational.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric to a prescribed kth order symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor on compact Riemannian manifolds with totally geodesic boundary. We prove the solvability of the problem and the compactness of the solution set for the case k >= n/2, provided the conformal class admits a k-admissible metric. These results have been proved by Gursky and Viaclovsky, Trudinger and Wang for the manifolds without boundary, and by Jin et al. and S. Chen for the locally conformally flat manifolds with boundary.

Abstract:The authors consider the problem of conformally deforming a metric such that the k-curvature defined by an elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor on a compact manifold with boundary to a prescribed function. A consequence of our main result is that there exists a complete metric such that the Monge-Ampère type equation with respect to its Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor is solvable, provided that the initial Bakry-Emery Ricci tensor belongs to a negative convex cone.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric on a 3-dimensional manifold M^3 such that its k-curvature equals to a prescribed function, where the k-curvature is defined by the k-th elementary symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Einstein tensor, 1≤ k≤ 3. We prove the solvability of the problem and the compactness of the solution sets on manifolds when k=2 and 3, provided the conformal class admits a negative k-admissible metric with respect to the Einstein tensor.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of AW(k)-type curves according to the equiform differential geometry of the pseudo-Galilean space. We show that equiform Bertrand curves are circular helices or isotropic circles of the pseudo-Galilean space. Also, there are equiform Bertrand curves of AW(3) and weak AW(3)-types. Moreover, we give the relations between the equiform curvatures of these curves. Finally, examples of some special curves are given and plotted.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of the moduli space of curves by using the curvature properties of direct image sheaves of vector bundles. We show that the moduli space $(M_g, \omega_{WP})$ of curves with genus $g>1$ has dual-Nakano negative and semi-Nakano-negative curvature, and in particular, it has non-positive Riemannain curvature operator and also non-positive complex sectional curvature. As applications, we prove that any submanifold in $M_g$ which is totally geodesic in $A_g$ with finite volume must be a ball quotient. We also show that, on a Kodaira (deformation) surface, there is no K\"ahler metric with non-positive Riemannain sectional curvature although it possesses K\"ahler metrics with strictly negative holomorphic bisectional curvature.

Abstract:In this article, we study rectifying curves in arbitrary dimensional Euclidean space. A curve is said to be a rectifying curve if, in all points of the curve, the orthogonal complement of its normal vector contains a fixed point. We characterize rectifying curves in the $n$-dimensional Euclidean space in different ways: using conditions on their curvatures, using an expression for the tangential component, the normal component or the binormal components of their position vector, and by constructing them starting from an arclength parameterized curve on the unit hypersphere.

Abstract:In this study, firstly, Mannheim curves with $\kappa_1 (s) \ne 0$, $\kappa_2 (s) \ne 0$ are considered and the conditions are obtained for Mannheim curve to be slant helix. Moreover, the necessary and sufficient conditions are investigated for Mannheim curve to be AW(2), AW(3) and weak AW(2)-types, respectively. Lastly, it is shown that there is no such a Mannheim curve of AW(1)-type.

Abstract:The orthogonal trajectories of the first tangents of the curve are called the involutes of $x$. The hyperspheres which have higher order contact with a curve $x$ are known osculating hyperspheres of $x$. The centers of osculating hyperspheres form a curve which is called generalized evolute of the given curve $x$ in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^{n}$. In the present study, we give a characterization of involute curves of order $k$ (resp. evolute curves) of the given curve $x$ in $n$-dimensional Euclidean space $\mathbb{E}^{n}$. Further, we obtain some results on these type of curves in $\mathbb{E}^{3}$ and $\mathbb{E}^{4}$, respectively.

Abstract:A curve is rectifying if it lies on a moving hyperplane orthogonal to its curvature vector. In this work, we extend the main result of [Chen 2017, Tamkang J. Math. 48, 209] to any space dimension: we prove that rectifying curves are geodesics on hypercones. We later use this association to characterize rectifying curves that are also slant helices in three-dimensional space as geodesics of circular cones. In addition, we consider curves that lie on a moving hyperplane normal to (i) one of the normal vector fields of the Frenet frame and to (ii) a rotation minimizing vector field along the curve. The former class is characterized in terms of the constancy of a certain vector field normal to the curve, while the latter contains spherical and plane curves. Finally, we establish a formal mapping between rectifying curves in an $(m + 2)$-dimensional space and spherical curves in an $(m + 1)$-dimensional space. A curve is rectifying if it lies on a moving hyperplane orthogonal to its curvature vector.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the rigidity problem on closed locally conformally flat manifolds with constant k-curvature or constant quotient curvature. We prove that such manifolds must have constant sectional curvature under the assumption that the manifolds have positive sectional curvature. The same result is also held on closed locally conformally flat manifolds with totally geodesic boundary.

Abstract:A twisted curve in Euclidean 3-space E^3 can be considered as a curve whose position vector can be written as linear combination of its Frenet vectors. In the present study we study the twisted curves of constant ratio in E^3 and characterize such curves in terms of their curvature functions. Further, we obtain some results of T-constant and N-constant type twisted curves in E^3. Finally, we give some examples of equiangular spirals which are constant ratio curves.

Abstract:We investigate the curvature of Eschenburg spaces with respect to two different metrics, one constructed by Eschenburg and the other by Wilking. With respect to the Eschenburg metric, we obtain a simple complete characterization of the curvature of every Eschenburg space in terms of the triples of integers defining the space. With respect to Wilking's metric, we study all the examples whose natural isometry group acts with cohomogeneity two. Here, we find that apart from the previously known examples with almost positive curvature, all the remaining examples have open sets of points with zero-curvature planes.

Subspace configurations and low degree points on curves

Abstract:This paper is devoted to understanding curves $X$ over a number field $k$ that possess infinitely many solutions in extensions of $k$ of degree at most $d$; such solutions are the titular low degree points. For $d=2,3$ it is known (by the work of Harris-Silverman and Abramovich-Harris) that such curves, after a base change to $\overline{k},$ admit a map of degree at most $d$ onto $\mathbb{P}^1$ or an elliptic curve. For $d \geqslant 4$ the analogous statement was shown to be false by Debarre and Fahlaoui. We prove that once the genus of $X$ is high enough, the low degree points still have geometric origin: they can be obtained as pullbacks of low degree points from a lower genus curve. We introduce a discrete-geometric invariant attached to such curves: a family of subspace configurations, with many interesting properties. This structure gives a natural alternative construction of curves with many low degree points, that were first discovered by Debarre and Fahlaoui. As an application of our methods, we obtain a classification of such curves over $k$ for $d=2,3$, and a classification over $\overline{k}$ for $d=4,5$.

Bertrand types of regular curves and Bertrand framed curves in the Euclidean 3-space

Abstract:A Bertrand (respectively, Mannheim) curve is a space curve whose principal normal line is the same as the principal normal (respectively, bi-normal) line of another curve. By definition, another curve is a parallel curve with respect to the direction of the principal normal vector. In this paper, we consider the other cases, that is, a space curve whose tangent (or, principal normal, bi-normal) line is the same as the tangent (or, principal normal, bi-normal) line of another curve, respectively. We say that a Bertrand type curve if there exists such another curve. We clarify that the existence conditions of Bertrand type curves in all cases. There are times when the Bertrand type curve does not exist. On the other hand, since the another curve may have singular points, we also consider curves with singular points. As smooth curves with singular points, it is useful to use the framed curves in the Euclidean space. Then we define and investigate Bertrand framed curves. We also clarify that the existence conditions of the Bertrand framed curves in all cases.

Abstract:We consider prescribing Gaussian curvature on a 2-sphere S-2. There are well-known Kazdan-Warner and Bourguinon-Ezin necessary conditions for a function K to be the Gaussian curvature of some pointwise conformal metric. Then are those necessary conditions also sufficient? This is a problem of common concern and has been left open for a few years. In this paper, we answer the question negatively. First, we show that if K is rotationally symmetric and is monotone in the region where K > 0, then the problem has no rationally symmetric solution. Then we provide a family of functions K satisfying the Kazdan-Warner and Bourguinon-Ezin conditions, for which the problem has no solution at all. We also consider prescribing scalar curvature on S-n for n greater than or equal to 3. We prove the nonexistence of rationally symmetric solution for the above mentioned functions.

Abstract:Motivated by a problem posed by David A. Singer in 1999 and by the elastic spherical curves, we study the spherical curves whose curvature is expressed in terms of the distance to a great circle (or from a point). By introducing the notion of spherical angular momentum, we provide new characterizations of some well known curves, like the mentioned elastic curves, spherical catenaries, loxodromic-type spherical curves, the Viviani's curve, and the spherical Archimedean spirals curves. Furthermore, we show that they may be obtained as critical points of some energy curvature functionals. We also find out several new families of spherical curves whose intrinsic equations are expressed in terms of elementary functions or Jacobi elliptic functions, and we are able to get arc length parametrizations of them.
