One of the motivations behind paraconsistent logic, namely LP, is that it should not be the case that everything follows from a single contradiction. It must pay a price, however, that some classical inferences would be invalid in LP. In Priest's recent invention, the logic of minimal paradox LPm can overcome the drawback, such that paraconsistent logic would be equivalent to classical logic when there is not direct effect of a contradiction. Although some proof theories for LP were introduced, there has not yet been a satisfactory proof theory for LPm. We will propose a sound and complete tableaux for LPm in this article.

Abstract:G. Priest introduced nonmonotonicity into a paraconsistent logic, so-called logic of paradox LP, that yields a solution to the weakness of paraconsistent logic. The resulting logic (of minimal parades) LPm is nonmonotonic in the sense that inconsistency is minimal. The problem of proof theory of logic LPm left open because the base logic LP is paraconsistent so that syntactic formulations of nonmonotonic logic are not available for LPm, though LPm is well characterized by minimal semantics. In this paper, we provide a minimal tableaus as a satisfactory proof theory for LPm . We first present a signed tableaux for LP. Then minimal tableaux for LPm is obtained by revising signed tableaux for LP to fit LPm in which the branches of non-minimally-inconsistent models of the tableaux are eliminated. The soundness and completeness theorems of the tableaux with respect to the semantics of LP and LPm are proved, respectively

Abstract:Logic programs P and Q are strongly equivalent if, given any program R, programs P union R and Q union R are equivalent (that is, have the same answer sets). Strong equivalence is convenient for the study of equivalent transformations of logic programs: one can prove that a local change is correct without considering the whole program. Lifschitz, Pearce and Valverde showed that Heyting's logic of here-and-there can be used to characterize strong equivalence for logic programs with nested expressions (which subsume the better-known extended disjunctive programs). This note considers a simpler, more direct characterization of strong equivalence for such programs, and shows that it can also be applied without modification to the weight constraint programs of Niemela and Simons. Thus, this characterization of strong equivalence is convenient for the study of equivalent transformations of logic programs written in the input languages of answer set programming systems dlv and smodels. The note concludes with a brief discussion of results that can be used to automate reasoning about strong equivalence, including a novel encoding that reduces the problem of deciding the strong equivalence of a pair of weight constraint programs to that of deciding the inconsistency of a weight constraint program.
Enablers and Inhibitors in Causal Justifications of Logic Programs

Abstract:To appear in Theory and Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP). In this paper we propose an extension of logic programming (LP) where each default literal derived from the well-founded model is associated to a justification represented as an algebraic expression. This expression contains both causal explanations (in the form of proof graphs built with rule labels) and terms under the scope of negation that stand for conditions that enable or disable the application of causal rules. Using some examples, we discuss how these new conditions, we respectively call "enablers" and "inhibitors", are intimately related to default negation and have an essentially different nature from regular cause-effect relations. The most important result is a formal comparison to the recent algebraic approaches for justifications in LP: "Why-not Provenance" (WnP) and "Causal Graphs" (CG). We show that the current approach extends both WnP and CG justifications under the Well-Founded Semantics and, as a byproduct, we also establish a formal relation between these two approaches.

On the Correspondence of Non-flat Assumption-based Argumentation and Logic Programming with Negation as Failure in the Head

Abstract:The relation between (a fragment of) assumption-based argumentation (ABA) and logic programs (LPs) under stable model semantics is well-studied. However, for obtaining this relation, the ABA framework needs to be restricted to being flat, i.e., a fragment where the (defeasible) assumptions can never be entailed, only assumed to be true or false. Here, we remove this restriction and show a correspondence between non-flat ABA and LPs with negation as failure in their head. We then extend this result to so-called set-stable ABA semantics, originally defined for the fragment of non-flat ABA called bipolar ABA. We showcase how to define set-stable semantics for LPs with negation as failure in their head and show the correspondence to set-stable ABA semantics.

Positive and monotone fragments of FO and LTL

Abstract:We study the positive logic FO+ on finite words, and its fragments, pursuing and refining the work initiated in [Kuperberg 2023]. First, we transpose notorious logic equivalences into positive first-order logic: FO+ is equivalent to LTL+ , and its two-variable fragment FO2+ with (resp. without) successor available is equivalent to UTL+ with (resp. without) the "next" operator X available. This shows that despite previous negative results, the class of FO+-definable languages exhibits some form of robustness. We then exhibit an example of an FO-definable monotone language on one predicate, that is not FO+-definable, refining the example from [Kuperberg 2023] with 3 predicates. Moreover, we show that such a counter-example cannot be FO2-definable.

Abstract:The relation among various semantic approaches for programming in three-valued logics is further clarified, some of the main results on Lassez and Maher's consequence operator are generalized, and all possible choices of three-valued implications under the following two conditions are found: (1) Every program has the (strong or weak) model intersection property, and (2) Fixpoints or post-fixpoints of Delahaye and Thibau, Fitting, and Lassez and Maher's consequence operators associated with a program coincide with its models. To overcome some objections to programming in three-valued logics, a four-valued semantics for logic programming with negation is also proposed.

Abstract:Extended multi-adjoint logic programming arises as an extension of multi-adjoint normal logic programming where constraints and a special type of aggregator operator have been included. The use of this general aggregator operator permits to consider, for example, different negation operators in the body of the rules of a logic program. We have introduced the syntax and the semantics of this new paradigm, as well as an interesting mechanism for obtaining a multi-adjoint normal logic program from an extended multi-adjoint logic program. This mechanism will allow us to establish technical properties relating the different stable models of both logic programming frameworks. Moreover, it makes possible that the already developed and future theory associated with stable models of multi-adjoint normal logic programs can be applied to extended multi-adjoint logic programs.

Abstract:Abstract We address the problem of belief revision of logic programs (LPs), i.e., how to incorporate to a LP P a new LP Q . Based on the structure of SE interpretations, Delgrande et al. (2008. Proc. of the 11th International Conference on Principles of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KR'08) , 411–421; 2013b. Proc. of the 12th International Conference on Logic Programming and Nonmonotonic Reasoning (LPNMR'13) , 264–276) adapted the well-known AGM framework (Alchourrón et al. 1985. Journal of Symbolic Logic 50 , 2, 510–530) to LP revision. They identified the rational behavior of LP revision and introduced some specific operators. In this paper, a constructive characterization of all rational LP revision operators is given in terms of orderings over propositional interpretations with some further conditions specific to SE interpretations. It provides an intuitive, complete procedure for the construction of all rational LP revision operators and makes easier the comprehension of their semantic and computational properties. We give a particular consideration to LPs of very general form, i.e., the generalized logic programs (GLPs). We show that every rational GLP revision operator is derived from a propositional revision operator satisfying the original AGM postulates. Interestingly, the further conditions specific to GLP revision are independent from the propositional revision operator on which a GLP revision operator is based. Taking advantage of our characterization result, we embed the GLP revision operators into structures of Boolean lattices, that allow us to bring to light some potential weaknesses in the adapted AGM postulates. To illustrate our claim, we introduce and characterize axiomatically two specific classes of (rational) GLP revision operators which arguably have a drastic behavior. We additionally consider two more restricted forms of LPs, i.e., the disjunctive logic programs (DLPs) and the normal logic programs (NLPs) and adapt our characterization result to disjunctive logic program and normal logic program revision operators.

ITE: A Lightweight Implementation of Stratified Reasoning for Constructive Logical Operators

Abstract:Constraint Programming (CP) is a powerful declarative programming paradigm where inference and search are interleaved to find feasible and optimal solutions to various type of constraint systems. However, handling logical connectors with constructive information in CP is notoriously difficult. This paper presents If Then Else (ITE), a lightweight implementation of stratified constructive reasoning for logical connectives. Stratification is introduced to cope with the risk of combinatorial explosion of constructing information from nested and combined logical operators. ITE is an open-source library built on top of SICStus Prolog clp(fd), which proposes various operators, including constructive disjunction and negation, constructive implication and conditional. These operators can be used to express global constraints and to benefit from constructive reasoning for more domain pruning during constraint filtering. Even though ITE is not competitive with specialized filtering algorithms available in some global constraints implementations, its expressiveness allows users to easily define well-tuned constraints with powerful deduction capabilities. Our extended experimental results show that ITE is more efficient than available generic approaches that handle logical constraint systems over finite domains.

Syntax-Preserving Belief Change Operators for Logic Programs

Abstract:Recent methods have adapted the well-established AGM and belief base frameworks for belief change to cover belief revision in logic programs. In this study here, we present two new sets of belief change operators for logic programs. They focus on preserving the explicit relationships expressed in the rules of a program, a feature that is missing in purely semantic approaches that consider programs only in their entirety. In particular, operators of the latter class fail to satisfy preservation and support, two important properties for belief change in logic programs required to ensure intuitive results. We address this shortcoming of existing approaches by introducing partial meet and ensconcement constructions for logic program belief change, which allow us to define syntax-preserving operators that satisfy preservation and support. Our work is novel in that our constructions not only preserve more information from a logic program during a change operation than existing ones, but they also facilitate natural definitions of contraction operators, the first in the field to the best of our knowledge. In order to evaluate the rationality of our operators, we translate the revision and contraction postulates from the AGM and belief base frameworks to the logic programming setting. We show that our operators fully comply with the belief base framework and formally state the interdefinability between our operators. We further propose an algorithm that is based on modularising a logic program to reduce partial meet and ensconcement revisions or contractions to performing the operation only on the relevant modules of that program. Finally, we compare our approach to two state-of-the-art logic program revision methods and demonstrate that our operators address the shortcomings of one and generalise the other method.

A strong intuitionistic theory of functionals

Abstract:In this paper we construct a Beth model for intuitionistic functionals of high types and use it to create a relatively strong theory SLP containg intuitionistic principles for functionals, in particular, the theory of the "creating subject", axioms for lawless functionals and some versions of choice axioms. We prove that the intuitionistic theory SLP is equiconsistent with a classical typed set theory TI, where the comprehension axiom for sets of type n is restricted to formulas with no parameters of types > n. We show that each fragment of SLP with types <= s is equiconsistent with the corresponding fragment of TI and that it is stronger than the previous fragment of SLP. Thus, both SLP and TI are much stronger than the second order arithmetic. By constructing the intuitionistic theory SLP and interpreting in it the classical set theory TI, we contribute to the program of justifying classical mathematics from the intuitionistic point of view.

Based on the standard grammar and syntax, this paper explains the logic implication of paracomplete negation, an?alyzes the logic syntactic characteristics, testifies the decidability of paracomplete logic quasi matrix with specific lining method, demonstrates the futility of general law of excluded middle in P 1 with quasi matrix method, analyzes the logic mechanism of paracomplete logic P 1 ’ s tolerance on logic paradox, and thus compares paraconsistent logic C1 and P1 on their tolerant ability.
Weight Constraints as Nested Expressions

Abstract:We compare two recent extensions of the answer set (stable model) semantics of logic programs. One of them, due to Lifschitz, Tang and Turner, allows the bodies and heads of rules to contain nested expressions. The other, due to Niemela and Simons, uses weight constraints. We show that there is a simple, modular translation from the language of weight constraints into the language of nested expressions that preserves the program's answer sets. Nested expressions can be eliminated from the result of this translation in favor of additional atoms. The translation makes it possible to compute answer sets for some programs with weight constraints using satisfiability solvers, and to prove the strong equivalence of programs with weight constraints using the logic of here-and there.

Abstract:In this paper, the deductive system for double propositional logic DL and gamma DL existential graphs are presented. It rigorously proves the consistency of the DL and that the DL theorems correspond exactly to the valid existential graphs of gamma DL. When the language of DL is restricted to the language of classical propositional logic, the restriction associated with gamma DL coincides with the valid existential graphs of Charles Sanders Peirce's alpha system. It turns out that intuitionistic propositional logic theorems are DL theorems; furthermore, when the language of DL is restricted to the language of IL, the restriction associated with gamma DL coincides with the valid existential graphs of Arnold Oostra's intuitionistic alpha system. As a consequence, it is inferred that gamma LD has as particular cases, the alpha existential graphs of LC and LI. Finally, in DL, the Aristotelian definitions of truth and falsity are derived, with which the ability of DL to solve a version of the liar paradox, where LC and LI fail, is illustrated.

Abstract:Two new metaphysical notions 'weak essence' and 'strong accident' are introduced. A proposition cp is weakly essential if once phi is true, (f) is possibly true; and the proposition phi is strongly accidental if (1) is true but.tiecessarily false. Under the condition that the frame is serial, if phi is essential, then phi is weakly essential, and if phi is strongly accidental, then phi is accidental. The relation between weak essence and strong accident, as that between essence and accident, is that one is the negation of the other. A logical system that describes weak essence and strong accident is established, and the system is shown to be sound and complete with respect to serial frames using possible worlds semantics.

Abstract:Classic epistemic logic focuses on propositional knowledge expressed by “knowing that” operators. However, there are various types of knowledge used in natural language, in terms of “knowing how”, “knowing whether”, “knowing what”, and so on. In [10], Plaza proposed an intuitive know-what operator which was generalized in [16] by introducing a condition. The latter know-what operator can express natural conditional knowledge such as “I know what your password is, if it is 4-digits”, which is not simply a material implication. Essentially this know-what operator packages a first-order quantifier and an S5-modality together in a non-trivial way, thus making it hard to axiomatize. In [16] an axiomatization is given for the single-agent epistemic logic with both know-that and know-what operators, while leaving axiomatizing the multi-agent case open due to various technical difficulties. In this paper, we solve this open problem. The completeness proof is highly non-trivial, compared to the singleagent case, which requires different techniques inspired by first-order intensional logic.

Abstract:Modal logic becomes action logic by adding programs as in propositional dynamic logic or the mu-calculus. Modal languages can be seen as decidable fragments of first-order logic that admit a natural bisimulation, and hence enjoy a goon model theory. Recently, much stronger 'guarded fragments' of first-order logic have been identified that enjoy the same pleasant features. The latter can serve as richer action languages as well. We will develop the logic of guarded fragments as a form of process theory. In particular, moving from sequential to parallel process operations correlates with moving to first-order fragments that are close to, or perhaps just over the decidable-undecidable fence.
