Abstract:The zero forcing number is the minimum number of black vertices that can turn a white graph black following a single neighbour colour forcing rule. The zero forcing number provides topological information about linear algebra on graphs, with applications to the controllability of linear dynamical systems and quantum walks on graphs among other problems. Here, I investigate the zero forcing number of undirected simple graphs with a power law degree distribution $p_k\sim k^{-\gamma}$. For graphs generated by the preferential attachment model, with a diameter scaling logarithmically with the graph size, the zero forcing number approaches the graph size when $\gamma\rightarrow2$. In contrast, for graphs generated by the deactivation model, with a diameter scaling linearly with the graph size, the zero forcing number is smaller than the graph size independently of $\gamma$. Therefore the scaling of the graph diameter with the graph size is another factor determining the controllability of dynamical systems.

Abstract:The random key graph is a random graph naturally associated with the random key predistribution scheme of Eschenauer and Gligor for wireless sensor networks. For this class of random graphs we establish a new version of a conjectured zero-one law for graph connectivity as the number of nodes becomes unboundedly large. The results reported here complement and strengthen recent work on this conjecture by Blackburn and Gerke. In particular, the results are given under conditions which are more realistic for applications to wireless sensor networks.

Abstract:Zero forcing is a deterministic iterative graph coloring process in which vertices are colored either blue or white, and in every round, any blue vertices that have a single white neighbor force these white vertices to become blue. Here we study probabilistic zero forcing, where blue vertices have a non-zero probability of forcing each white neighbor to become blue.We explore the propagation time for probabilistic zero forcing on the Erdős–Réyni random graph <math>G(n,p)</math> when we start with a single vertex colored blue. We show that when <math>p=log−o(1)n</math>, then with high probability it takes <math>(1+o(1))log2log2n</math> rounds for all the vertices in <math>G(n,p)</math> to become blue, and when <math>logn∕n≪p≤log−O(1)n</math>, then with high probability it takes <math>Θ(log(1∕p))</math> rounds.

A generalized Beraha conjecture for non-planar graphs

Abstract:We study the partition function Z_{G(nk,k)}(Q,v) of the Q-state Potts model on the family of (non-planar) generalized Petersen graphs G(nk,k). We study its zeros in the plane (Q,v) for 1<= k <= 7. We also consider two specializations of Z_{G(nk,k)}, namely the chromatic polynomial P_{G(nk,k)}(Q) (corresponding to v=-1), and the flow polynomial Phi_{G(nk,k)}(Q) (corresponding to v=-Q). In these two cases, we study their zeros in the complex Q-plane for 1 <= k <= 7. We pay special attention to the accumulation loci of the corresponding zeros when n -> infinity. We observe that the Berker-Kadanoff phase that is present in two-dimensional Potts models, also exists for non-planar recursive graphs. Their qualitative features are the same; but the main difference is that the role played by the Beraha numbers for planar graphs is now played by the non-negative integers for non-planar graphs. At these integer values of Q, there are massive eigenvalue cancellations, in the same way as the eigenvalue cancellations that happen at the Beraha numbers for planar graphs.

Probability graphons and P-variables: two equivalent viewpoints for dense weighted graph limits

Abstract:We develop further the graph limit theory for dense weighted graph sequences. In particular, we consider probability graphons, which have recently appeared in graph limit theory as continuum representations of weighted graphs, and we introduce P-variables, which also appear in the context of the Aldous-Hoover theorem for exchangeable infinite random arrays, as an alternative continuum representation for weighted graphs. In particular, we explain how P-variables are related to probability graphons in a similar way in which random variables are related to probability measures. We define a metric for P-variables (inspired by action convergence in the graph limit theory of sparse graph sequences) and show that convergence of P-variables in this metric is equivalent to probability graphons convergence. We exploit this equivalence to translate several results from the theory of probability graphons to P-variables. In addition, we prove several properties of P-variables convergence, thus showing new properties also for probability graphons convergence and demonstrating the power of the connection between probability graphons and P-variables. Furthermore, we show how P-variables convergence can be easily modified and generalised to cover other combinatorial structures such as bipartite graphs and hypergraphs.

Zero-One Laws of Graph Neural Networks

Abstract:Graph neural networks (GNNs) are the de facto standard deep learning architectures for machine learning on graphs. This has led to a large body of work analyzing the capabilities and limitations of these models, particularly pertaining to their representation and extrapolation capacity. We offer a novel theoretical perspective on the representation and extrapolation capacity of GNNs, by answering the question: how do GNNs behave as the number of graph nodes become very large? Under mild assumptions, we show that when we draw graphs of increasing size from the Erdős-Rényi model, the probability that such graphs are mapped to a particular output by a class of GNN classifiers tends to either zero or to one. This class includes the popular graph convolutional network architecture. The result establishes 'zero-one laws' for these GNNs, and analogously to other convergence laws, entails theoretical limitations on their capacity. We empirically verify our results, observing that the theoretical asymptotic limits are evident already on relatively small graphs.

Abstract:Symmetric matrices with zero row sums occur in many theoretical settings and in real-life applications. When the offdiagonal elements of such matrices are i.i.d. random variables and the matrices are large, the eigenvalue distributions converge to a peculiar universal curve $p_{\mathrm{zrs}}(\lambda)$ that looks like a cross between the Wigner semicircle and a Gaussian distribution. An analytic theory for this curve, originally due to Fyodorov, can be developed using supersymmetry-based techniques. We extend these derivations to the case of sparse matrices, including the important case of graph Laplacians for large random graphs with $N$ vertices of mean degree $c$. In the regime $1\ll c\ll N$, the eigenvalue distribution of the ordinary graph Laplacian (diffusion with a fixed transition rate per edge) tends to a shifted and scaled version of $p_{\mathrm{zrs}}(\lambda)$, centered at $c$ with width $\sim\sqrt{c}$. At smaller $c$, this curve receives corrections in powers of $1/\sqrt{c}$ accurately captured by our theory. For the normalized graph Laplacian (diffusion with a fixed transition rate per vertex), the large $c$ limit is a shifted and scaled Wigner semicircle, again with corrections captured by our analysis.

Phase Transitions via Complex Extensions of Markov Chains

Abstract:We study algebraic properties of partition functions, particularly the location of zeros, through the lens of rapidly mixing Markov chains. The classical Lee-Yang program initiated the study of phase transitions via locating complex zeros of partition functions. Markov chains, besides serving as algorithms, have also been used to model physical processes tending to equilibrium. In many scenarios, rapid mixing of Markov chains coincides with the absence of phase transitions (complex zeros). Prior works have shown that the absence of phase transitions implies rapid mixing of Markov chains. We reveal a converse connection by lifting probabilistic tools for the analysis of Markov chains to study complex zeros of partition functions. Our motivating example is the independence polynomial on $k$-uniform hypergraphs, where the best-known zero-free regime has been significantly lagging behind the regime where we have rapidly mixing Markov chains for the underlying hypergraph independent sets. Specifically, the Glauber dynamics is known to mix rapidly on independent sets in a $k$-uniform hypergraph of maximum degree $\Delta$ provided that $\Delta \lesssim 2^{k/2}$. On the other hand, the best-known zero-freeness around the point $1$ of the independence polynomial on $k$-uniform hypergraphs requires $\Delta \le 5$, the same bound as on a graph. By introducing a complex extension of Markov chains, we lift an existing percolation argument to the complex plane, and show that if $\Delta \lesssim 2^{k/2}$, the Markov chain converges in a complex neighborhood, and the independence polynomial itself does not vanish in the same neighborhood. In the same regime, our result also implies central limit theorems for the size of a uniformly random independent set, and deterministic approximation algorithms for the number of hypergraph independent sets of size $k \le \alpha n$ for some constant $\alpha$.

Abstract:We study statistical properties of a zero-range process (ZRP) on random networks. We derive an analytic expression for the distribution of particles (also called node occupation distribution) in the steady state of the ZRP in the ensemble of uncorrelated random graphs. We analyze the dependence of this distribution on the node-degree distribution. In particular, we show that when the degree distribution is tuned properly, one can obtain scale-free fluctuations in the distribution of particles. Such fluctuations lead to a power law in the distribution of particles, just like in the ZRP with the hopping rate u(m)=1+b/m on homogeneous graphs.

k-Connectivity in Random Key Graphs with Unreliable Links

Abstract:Random key graphs form a class of random intersection graphs and are naturally induced by the random key predistribution scheme of Eschenauer and Gligor for securing wireless sensor network (WSN) communications. Random key graphs have received much interest recently, owing in part to their wide applicability in various domains including recommender systems, social networks, secure sensor networks, clustering and classification analysis, and cryptanalysis to name a few. In this paper, we study connectivity properties of random key graphs in the presence of unreliable links. Unreliability of the edges are captured by independent Bernoulli random variables, rendering edges of the graph to be on or off independently from each other. The resulting model is an intersection of a random key graph and an Erdos-Renyi graph, and is expected to be useful in capturing various real-world networks; e.g., with secure WSN applications in mind, link unreliability can be attributed to harsh environmental conditions severely impairing transmissions. We present conditions on how to scale this model's parameters so that i) the minimum node degree in the graph is at least k, and ii) the graph is k-connected, both with high probability as the number of nodes becomes large. The results are given in the form of zeroone laws with critical thresholds identified and shown to coincide for both graph properties. These findings improve the previous results by Rybarczyk on the k-connectivity of random key graphs (with reliable links), as well as the zero-one laws by Yagan on the 1-connectivity of random key graphs with unreliable links.

The clique chromatic number of sparse random graphs

Abstract:The clique chromatic number of a graph is the smallest number of colors in a vertex coloring so that no maximal clique is monochromatic. In this paper, we determine the order of magnitude of the clique chromatic number of the random graph G_{n,p} for most edge-probabilities p in the range n^{-2/5} \ll p \ll 1. This resolves open problems and questions of Lichev, Mitsche and Warnke as well as Alon and Krievelevich. One major proof difficulty stems from high-degree vertices, which prevent maximal cliques in their neighborhoods: we deal with these vertices by an intricate union bound argument, that combines the probabilistic method with new degree counting arguments in order to enable Janson's inequality. This way we determine the asymptotics of the clique chromatic number of G_{n,p} in some ranges, and discover a surprising new phenomenon that contradicts earlier predictions for edge-probabilities p close to n^{-2/5}.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the distribution of normalized zero-sets of random polynomials when the coefficients of the polynomials are random variables associated to independent (but not necessarily identical) distributions satisfying additional certain mild conditions. Our main result describes the expectation of such normalized zero-set when the degree of the random polynomial of one complex variable tends to infinity. This generalizes well-known results in the case of the Gaussian distribution. We also apply our main result to study certain random polynomials of several complex variables using the slicing method of value distribution theory.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the distribution of the cokernels of random $p$-adic matrices with fixed zero entries. Let $X_n$ be a random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ in which some entries are fixed to be zero and the other entries are i.i.d. copies of a random variable $\xi \in \mathbb{Z}_p$. We consider the minimal number of random entries of $X_n$ required for the cokernel of $X_n$ to converge to the Cohen--Lenstra distribution. When $\xi$ is given by the Haar measure, we prove a lower bound of the number of random entries and prove its converse-type result using random regular bipartite multigraphs. When $\xi$ is a general random variable, we determine the minimal number of random entries. Let $M_n$ be a random $n \times n$ matrix over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ with $k$-step stairs of zeros and the other entries given by independent random $\epsilon$-balanced variables valued in $\mathbb{Z}_p$. We prove that the cokernel of $M_n$ converges to the Cohen--Lenstra distribution under a mild assumption. This extends Wood's universality theorem on random $p$-adic matrices.

Power-Law Graphs Have Minimal Scaling of Kemeny Constant for Random Walks.

Abstract:The mean hitting time from a node i to a node j selected randomly according to the stationary distribution of random walks is called the Kemeny constant, which has found various applications. It was proved that over all graphs with N vertices, complete graphs have the exact minimum Kemeny constant, growing linearly with N. Here we study numerically or analytically the Kemeny constant on many sparse real-world and model networks with scale-free small-world topology, and show that their Kemeny constant also behaves linearly with N. Thus, sparse networks with scale-free and small-world topology are favorable architectures with optimal scaling of Kemeny constant. We then present a theoretically guaranteed estimation algorithm, which approximates the Kemeny constant for a graph in nearly linear time with respect to the number of edges. Extensive numerical experiments on model and real networks show that our approximation algorithm is both efficient and accurate.

Abstract:We introduce a new random key predistribution scheme for securing heterogeneous wireless sensor networks. Each of the n sensors in the network is classified into r classes according to some probability distribution {\mu} = {{\mu}_1 , . . . , {\mu}_r }. Before deployment, a class-i sensor is assigned K_i cryptographic keys that are selected uniformly at random from a common pool of P keys. Once deployed, a pair of sensors can communicate securely if and only if they have a key in common. We model the communication topology of this network by a newly defined inhomogeneous random key graph. We establish scaling conditions on the parameters P and {K_1 , . . . , K_r } so that this graph i) has no isolated nodes; and ii) is connected, both with high probability. The results are given in the form of zero-one laws with the number of sensors n growing unboundedly large; critical scalings are identified and shown to coincide for both graph properties. Our results are shown to complement and improve those given by Godehardt et al. and Zhao et al. for the same model, therein referred to as the general random intersection graph.

Abstract:Sequences of discrete random variables are studied whose probability generating functions are zero-free in a sector of the complex plane around the positive real axis. Sharp bounds on the cumulants of all orders are stated, leading to Berry-Esseen bounds, moderate deviation results, concentration inequalities and mod-Gaussian convergence. In addition, an alternate proof of the cumulant bound with improved constants for a class of polynomials all of whose roots lie on the unit circle is provided. A variety of examples is discussed in detail.

Abstract:We investigate the twin‐width of the Erdős‐Rényi random graph G(n,p) . We unveil a surprising behavior of this parameter by showing the existence of a constant p∗≈0.4 such that with high probability, when p∗≤p≤1−p∗ , the twin‐width is asymptotically 2p(1−p)n , whereas, when 0 p>1−p∗ , the twin‐width is significantly higher than 2p(1−p)n . In addition, we show that the twin‐width of G(n,1/2) is concentrated around n/2−3nlogn/2 within an interval of length o(nlogn) . For the sparse random graph, we show that with high probability, the twin‐width of G(n,p) is Θ(np) when (726lnn)/n≤p≤1/2 .

Abstract:Let $K_{n}^{N}(x;p,q)$ be the Krawtchouk polynomials and μ = N/n. An asymptotic expansion is derived for $K_{n}^{N}(x;p,q)$, when x is a fixed number. This expansion holds uniformly for μ in [1,∞), and is given in terms of the confluent hypergeometric functions. Asymptotic approximations are also obtained for the zeros of $K_{n}^{N}(x;p,q)$ in various cases depending on the values of p, q and μ.
