Abstract:A new class of exact solutions to the axisymmetric and stationary vacuum Einstein equations containing n arbitrary complex parameters and one arbitrary real solution of the axisymmetric three-dimensional Laplace equation is presented. The solutions are related to Jacobi's inversion problem for hyperelliptic Abelian integrals.

We give some background and personal perspectives on the problem and its solution. We decided not to include additional research announcements in this issue, so to let them draw the attention they deserve in the coming issue. This issue also contains an interesting new problem which is related to the Minimal Tower problem (but still open).

Roughness of stylolites: a stress-induced instability with non local interactions

Abstract:We study the roughness of stylolite surfaces (i.e. natural pressure-dissolution surfaces in sedimentary rocks) from profiler measurements at laboratory scales. The roughness is shown to be nicely described by a self-affine scaling invariance. At large scales, the roughness exponent is $\zeta_1 \approx 0.5$ and very different from that at small scales where $\zeta_2 \approx 1.1$. A cross-over length scale at around $\lambda_c =1$mm is well characterized and interpreted as a possible fossil stress measurement if related to the Asaro-Tiller-Grinfeld stress-induced instability. Measurements are consistent with a Langevin equation that describes the growth of stylolite surfaces in a quenched disordered material with long range elastic correlations.

Abstract:Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a swarm intelligence-based metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the natural behavior of birds flocking or fish schooling. The PSO’s main advantages are its ease of implementation and a small number of fine-tuning parameters. However, the major drawbacks of an existing PSO are its premature convergence and the lack of a balance of exploration and exploitation searches in the search space. To address the aforementioned problems, a new concept known as a smart particle swarm optimization (SPSO) process is introduced and implemented. The smart particle that leads the swarm in the proposed concept has eidetic memory behavior. The smart particle mainly works under the principles of a convergence factor (CF) technique, which integrates the memorization of particles positions, comparison, and leader declaration for the best optimal solution. Additionally, CF uses a particle position vector instead of a particle fitness or mutation to increase the exploration capability in the search space. The TEAM Workshop Problem 22, a super conducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) system; and some well-known benchmark optimization test functions are numerically solved to verify the efficacy of the proposed SPSO. The SPSO finds a better optimal solution than the other tested algorithms, particularly in the initial computational evaluation of the generation according to numerical experiments and case study analysis.

Abstract:In April 2016, a community of researchers working in the area of Principles of Data Management (PDM) joined in the Dagstuhl Castle in Germany for a workshop organized jointly by the Executive Committee of the ACM Symposium on Principles of Database Systems (PODS) and the Council of the International Conference on Database Theory (ICDT). The mission of this workshop was to identify and explore some of the most important research directions that have high relevance to society and to Computer Science today, and where the PDM community has the potential to make significant contributions. This report describes the family of research directions that the workshop focused on from three perspectives: potential practical relevance, results already obtained, and research questions that appear surmountable in the short and medium term. Abstract:This manuscript presents the following: (1) an improved version of the Binary Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation (SPSA) Method for feature selection in machine learning (Aksakalli and Malekipirbazari, Pattern Recognition Letters, Vol. 75, 2016) based on non-monotone iteration gains computed via the Barzilai and Borwein (BB) method, (2) its adaptation for feature ranking, and (3) comparison against popular methods on public benchmark datasets. The improved method, which we call SPSA-FSR, dramatically reduces the number of iterations required for convergence without impacting solution quality. SPSA-FSR can be used for feature ranking and feature selection both for classification and regression problems. After a review of the current state-of-the-art, we discuss our improvements in detail and present three sets of computational experiments: (1) comparison of SPSA-FS as a (wrapper) feature selection method against sequential methods as well as genetic algorithms, (2) comparison of SPSA-FS as a feature ranking method in a classification setting against random forest importance, chi-squared, and information main methods, and (3) comparison of SPSA-FS as a feature ranking method in a regression setting against minimum redundancy maximum relevance (MRMR), RELIEF, and linear correlation methods. The number of features in the datasets we use range from a few dozens to a few thousands. Our results indicate that SPSA-FS converges to a good feature set in no more than 100 iterations and therefore it is quite fast for a wrapper method. SPSA-FS also outperforms popular feature selection as well as feature ranking methods in majority of test cases, sometimes by a large margin, and it stands as a promising new feature selection and ranking method.
A Survey on Soc Complementarity Functions and Solution Methods for Socps and Soccps

Abstract:This paper makes a survey on SOC complementarity functions and related solution methods for the second-order cone programming (SOCP) and second-order cone complementarity problem (SOCCP). Specifically, we discuss the properties of four classes of popular merit functions, and study the theoretical results of associated merit function methods and numerical behaviors in the solution of convex SOCPs. Then, we present suitable nonsinguarity conditions for the B-subdifferentials of the natural residual (NR) and Fischer-Burmeister (FB) nonsmooth system reformulations at a (locally) optimal solution, and test the numerical behavior of a globally convergent FB semismooth Newton method. Finally, we survey the properties of smoothing functions of the NR and FB SOC complementarity functions, and provide numerical comparisons of the smoothing Newton methods based on them. The theoretical results and numerical experience of this paper provide a comprehensive view on the development of this field in the past ten years.
