Abstract:Parallel Computing Using Optical Interconnections directly addresses the second factor, indicating that advances in optical technologies make it possible to consider optical interconnection networks as the base communication technology in future computer architectures. Desirable characteristics of such optical technology include high speed, high bandwidth, low-power requirements, and high reliability. However, these characteristics also impact the effectiveness of using such technology to merely replace the current existing interconnection technology. That is, the nature of the first factor has changed when considering the deployment of optical technolgies. We need careful and effective studies on how this new technology impacts algorithms, partitioning, theoretical computation models, and so forth, so that optical technology is not underutilized. Parallel Computing Using Optical Interconnections provides for this study; that is, this book indirectly addresses the first factor. As is the case with many recent research areas, numerous publications have reported on and supported optical interconnections. However, as the editors of Parallel Computing Using Optical Interconnections, Keqin Li, Yi Pan, and SiQing Zheng, express, “There is need for better understanding of what optical technologies can offer for interconnections, how optical interconnections can be constructed, and what the impacts of optical interconnections are on” future computer architectures (preface, pg. X). This book fulfills this need and is the first (to my knowledge) to provide a comprehensive exposition of optical interconnection technology. It is a collection of survey articles (20–25 pages each) by various and respected researchers in the area, each focusing on a specific topic. Each article includes an introduction, providing a succinct yet comprehensive overview of the field; an extensive bibliography offering the opportunity for further investigation; well-written accounts of a specific research endeavor; and strong continuity between the various topics discussed. Although some original results are included, much of the material is based on recently published works. The 12 chapters are grouped into two parts. Part one covers optical interconnection networks and system architectures. Chapter 1 provides a reconfigurable, hierarchical, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) network called Lightning for large-scale parallel computing in a distributed shared-memory environment. Chapter 2 examines the class of intelligent optical networks. Chapter 3 describes a scalable interconnection topology called Spanning Multichannel Linked Hypercube as well as its optical implementation.
