Abstract:In this paper we continue the development of a spectral triple-like construction on a configuration space of gauge connections. We have previously shown that key elements of bosonic and fermionic quantum field theory emerge from such a geometrical framework. In this paper we solve a central problem concerning the inclusion of fermions with half-integer spin into this framework. We map the tangent space of the configuration space into a similar space based on spinors and use this map to construct a Dirac operator on the configuration space. We also construct a real structure acting in a Hilbert space over the configuration space. Finally, we show that the self-dual and anti-self-dual sectors of the Hamiltonian of a non-perturbative quantum Yang-Mills theory emerge from a unitary transformation of a Dirac equation on a configuration space of gauge fields. The dual and anti-dual sectors emerge in a two-by-two matrix structure.

Abstract:The continuum limit of the tilted SU(2) spin model is shown to lead to a gauge Landau-Lifshitz equation which provides a unified description for various spin orders. For a definite gauge with zero field strength, we find a double periodic solution, where the conical spiral, in-plane spiral, helical, and ferromagnetic spin orders become special cases. For another gauge with nonzero field strength, we obtain the skyrmion-crystal solution. By simulating the influence of magnetic field and temperature for our model, we find a spontaneous formation of a skyrmion-fragment lattice similar to the spin texture found in experiment very recently; we also obtain a wider range of skyrmion-crystal phase in the parameter space in comparison to the conventional Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya model.

Abstract:Geometrical interpretation on U(1) gage theory of Dirac monopole, introduced here from the line integral\cite{Brandt} form of vector potentials, shows the gauge representation be multi-valued. In this paper, we construct Euclidean form of U(1) gauge theory on Dirac monopole based on the geometrical interpretation, derive the Dirac quantization condition geometrically. Even several theoretical methods which leads to Dirac quantization $eg=l/2$ has been developed, these are only possible under the postulate that gauge representation is single-valued. Using the line integration representation of vector potential, we derived the gauge equation which satisfies under the `phase gauge transformation' ($\mathbf{A}\to\mathbf{A}'=\mathbf{A}, \ \psi\to\psi'=e^{ie\Lambda}\psi$), also showed that the Dirac quantization condition can be derived by the geometrical boundary condition on this gauge equation, without any supposing of canonical quantization condition. We finally explain geometrical meaning of constant phase of gauge and how the Dirac quantization holds single valued gauge representation.

Abstract:The interplay between between gauge-field winding numbers, theta-vacua, and the Dirac operator spectrum in finite-volume gauge theories is reconsidered. To assess the weight of each topological sector, we compare the mass-dependent chiral condensate in gauge field sectors of fixed topological index with the answer obtained by summing over the topological charge. Also the microscopic Dirac operator spectrum in the full finite-volume Yang-Mills theory is obtained in this way, by summing over all topological sectors with the appropriate weight.

Concentrating Dirac Operators and Generalized Seiberg-Witten Equations

Abstract:This article studies a class of Dirac operators of the form $D_\varepsilon= D+\varepsilon^{-1}\mathcal A$, where $\mathcal A$ is a zeroth order perturbation vanishing on a subbundle. When $\mathcal A$ satisfies certain additional assumptions, solutions of the Dirac equation have a concentration property in the limit $\varepsilon\to 0$: components of the solution orthogonal to $\ker(\mathcal A)$ decay exponentially away from the locus $\mathcal Z$ where the rank of $\ker(\mathcal A)$ jumps up. These results are extended to a class of non-linear Dirac equations. This framework is then applied to study the compactness properties of moduli spaces of solutions to generalized Seiberg-Witten equations. In particular, it is shown that for sequences of solutions which converge weakly to a $\mathbb Z_2$-harmonic spinor, certain components of the solutions concentrate exponentially around the singular set of the $\mathbb Z_2$-harmonic spinor. Using these results, the weak convergence to $\mathbb Z_2$-harmonic spinors proved in existing convergence theorems is improved to $C^\infty_{loc}$.

Abstract:Exact analytical results are obtained for the magnetization of a superconducting thin strip with a general behavior J_c(B) of the critical current density. We show that within the critical-state model the magnetization as function of applied field, B_a, has an extremum located exactly at B_a=0. This result is in excellent agreement with presented experimental data for a YBCO thin film. After introducing granularity by patterning the film, the central peak becomes shifted to positive fields on the descending field branch of the loop. Our results show that a positive peak position is a definite signature of granularity in superconductors.

On Hamiltonian formulations of the Dirac system

Abstract:We extend a previously successful discussion of the constrained Schrödinger system through the Dirac--Bergmann algorithm to the case of the Dirac field. In order to follow the analogy, first we discuss the classical Dirac field as a spinorial variable, by introducing properly defined momenta and a suitably modified, factor ordered Poisson bracket. According to the Dirac--Bergmann algorithm two second class Hamiltonian constraints emerge, leading to a factor ordered Dirac bracket on the full phase space. This becomes the Poisson bracket on the reduced phase space in the canonical chart adapted to the shell. The Dirac equation is recovered both as consistency condition on the full phase space and as canonical equation on the reduced phase space. Alternatively, considering the Dirac field as odd Grassmann variable, we present the details of the Dirac--Bergmann algorithm (with either left and righ derivatives acting on Grassmann valued superfunctions and involving a different type of generalized Poisson and Dirac brackets). We propose a recipe for the canonical second quantization of all three versions of the generalized Dirac brackets, yielding the correct fundamental anticommutator.

Generalized Wigner-Weyl calculus for gauge theory and non-dissipative transport

Abstract:We consider a theory of fermions interacting with a (in general, non-Abelian) gauge field. The theory is assumed to be essentially inhomogeneous, which might be provided by non-trivial background fields interacting with both fermions and gauge bosons. For this theory, a version of Wigner-Weyl calculus is constructed, in which the Wigner transformation of the fermion Green function belongs to the adjoint representation of the gauge group. We demonstrate the power of the proposed formalism through the representation of responses of vector and axial currents to the gauge field strength through the topological invariants composed of the Wigner transformed two-point Green functions. This way a new family of non-dissipative transport phenomena is introduced. In particular, we discuss the non-Abelian versions of the chiral separation effect and of the quantum Hall effect.

Abstract:We review the construction of Lagrangians for higher spin fields of mixed symmetry in the framework of graded geometry. The main advantage of the graded formalism in this context is that it provides universal expressions, in the sense that a given Lagrangian describes the dynamics of any type of bosonic tensor field even though the corresponding explicit expressions in terms of local field components and their derivatives look rather different. Aside from free fields and their kinetic terms, we also consider higher derivative interaction terms that lead to second order field equations. For scalars, differential forms and bipartite tensors, these are identified with Galileon theories, written in a simple yet elegant form as a generalised kinetic term, and are gauge invariant by construction. For fields of spin higher than 2, we illustrate the candidate Galileon-like interactions and argue that full gauge invariance and locality cannot be simultaneously maintained.

Gauge fields induced by curved spacetime on a lattice

Abstract:I found an extended duality (triality) between Dirac fermions in periodic spacetime metrics, nonrelativistic fermions in gauge fields (e.g., Harper-Hofstadter model), and in periodic scalar fields on a lattice (e.g., Aubry-André model). This indicates an unexpected equivalence between spacetime metrics, gauge fields, and scalar fields on the lattice, which is understood as different physical representations of the same mathematical object, the quantum group $\mathcal{U}_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$. This quantum group is generated by the exponentiation of two canonical conjugate operators, namely a linear combination of position and momentum (periodic spacetime metrics), the two components of the gauge invariant momentum (gauge fields), position and momentum (periodic scalar fields). Hence, on a lattice, Dirac fermions in a periodic spacetime metric are equivalent to nonrelativistic fermions in a periodic scalar field after a proper canonical transformation. The three lattice Hamiltonians (periodic spacetime metric, Harper-Hofstadter, and Aubry-André) share the same properties, namely fractal phase diagrams, self-similarity, topological invariants, flat bands, and topological quantized current in the incommensurate regimes.

Abstract:In this note we discuss features of the simplest spinning Discrete Series Unitary Irreducible Representations (UIR) of SO(1,4). These representations are known to be realised in the single particle Hilbert space of a free gauge field propagating in a four dimensional fixed de Sitter background. They showcase distinct features as compared to the more common Principal Series realised by heavy fields. Upon computing the 1 loop Sphere path integral we show that the edge modes of the theory can be understood in terms of a Discrete Series of SO(1, 2). We then canonically quantise the theory and show how group theory constrains the mode decomposition. We further clarify the role played by the second SO(4) Casimir in the single particle Hilbert space of the theory.

Physics and Geometry from a Lagrangian: Dirac Spinors on a Generalised Frame Bundle

Abstract:We clarify the structure obtained in Hélein and Vey's proposition for a variational principle for the Einstein-Cartan gravitation formulated on a frame bundle starting from a structure-less differentiable 10-manifold. The obtained structure is locally equivalent to a frame bundle which we term "generalised frame bundle". In the same time, we enrich the model with a Dirac spinor coupled to the Einstein-Cartan spacetime. The obtained variational equations generalise the usual Einstein-Cartan-Dirac field equations in that they are shown to imply the usualy field equations when the generalised frame bundle is a standard frame bundle.

The Schrödinger Representation and 3d Gauge Theories

Abstract:In this review we consider the Hamiltonian analysis of Yang-Mills theory and some variants of it in three spacetime dimensions using the Schrödinger representation. This representation, although technically more involved than the usual covariant formulation, may be better suited for some nonperturbative issues. Specifically for the Yang-Mills theory, we explain how to set up the Hamiltonian formulation in terms of manifestly gauge-invariant variables and set up an expansion scheme for solving the Schrödinger equation. We review the calculation of the string tension, the Casimir energy and the propagator mass and compare with the results from lattice simulations. The computation of the first set of corrections to the string tension, string breaking effects, extensions to the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory and to the supersymmetric cases are also discussed. We also comment on how entanglement for the vacuum state can be formulated in terms of the BFK gluing formula. The review concludes with a discussion of the status and prospects of this approach.

Abstract:In this paper we discuss a connection between Dirac operators on configuration spaces and Yang-Mills quantum field theory. We first show that the Hamilton operators of the self-dual and anti-self-dual sectors of a Yang-Mills quantum field theory emerge from unitary transformations of a Dirac equation formulated on a configuration space of gauge connections. Secondly, we formulate a Bott-Dirac operator on the configuration space and demonstrate how the Hamilton operator of a Yang-Mills quantum field theory coupled to a fermionic sector emerges from its square. Finally, we discuss a spectral invariant that emerges in this framework.

Abstract:We present the fundamental solutions for the spin-1/2 fields propagating in the spacetimes with power type expansion/contraction and the fundamental solution of the Cauchy problem for the Dirac equation. The derivation of these fundamental solutions is based on formulas for the solutions to the generalized Euler-Poisson-Darboux equation, which are obtained by the integral transform approach.

Abstract:Role of gauge symmetry in the proton spin problem has intricate and unresolved aspects. One of the interesting approaches to gain physical insights is to explore tha Landau problem in this context. A detailed study using the group theoretic method to understand the Landau problem establishes the significance of the gauge transformation intimately related with the space translation symmetry. An important implication of this result is that the E(2)-like Wigner's little group for massless particles could throw more light on the question of gauge symmetry in QED and QCD. A generalized Landau-Zeeman Hamiltonian is proposed in which Dirac two-oscillator system and the symmetry of the group SO(3,2) become important. It is argued that nontrivial topology of pure gauge field holds promise to resolve the unsettled questions.

Abstract:We introduce and study the generalized Wigner operator. By definition, such an operator transforms the Wigner wave function into a local relativistic field corresponding to an irreducible representation of the Poincaré group by extended discrete transformations, with integer helicities $\lambda$ and $-\lambda$. It is shown that the relativistic fields constructed in this way are gauge potentials and satisfy the relations that determine free massless higher spin fields.
