Abstract:We describe predictions for top quark pair differential distributions at hadron colliders,by combining the next-to-next-to-leading order quantum chromodynamics calculations and next-to-leading order electroweak corrections with double resummation at the next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy of threshold logarithms and small-mass logarithms.To the best of our knowledge,this is the first study to present such a combination,which incorporates all known perturbative information.Numerical results are presented for the invariant-mass distribution,transverse-momentum distribution,and rapidity distributions.

Abstract:We present results for the total top-pair production cross section at the Tevatron and the LHC. Our predictions supplement fixed-order results with resummation of soft logarithms and Coulomb singularities to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy and include top-antitop bound-state effects. The effects of resummation, the dependence on the PDF set used, the residual sources of theoretical uncertainty and their implication for measurements of the top-quark mass are discussed.

Abstract:We calculate all main top-quark pair differential distributions at the Tevatron. For the first time Tevatron predictions for this process include all Standard Model corrections through NLO (referred to as complete-NLO) consistently combined with previously computed NNLO QCD corrections. We also assess, for the first time, the impact of dynamical scales on predictions for the latest Tevatron measurements.

Abstract:We make use of recent results in effective theory and higher-order perturbative calculations to improve the theoretical predictions of the top-quark pair production cross section at hadron colliders. In particular, we supplement the fixed-order NLO calculation with higher-order corrections from soft gluon resummation at NNLL accuracy. Uncertainties due to power corrections to the soft limit are estimated by combining results from single-particle inclusive and pair invariant-mass kinematics. We present our predictions as functions of the top-quark mass in both the pole scheme and the MS(bar) scheme. We also discuss the merits of using threshold masses as an alternative, and calculate the cross section with the top-quark mass defined in the 1S scheme as an illustrative example.

Abstract:In this talk we apply two factorisation theorems to top quark pair production at hadron colliders. The factorisation theorems allow for the resummation of threshold logarithms as well as the resummation of small-mass logarithms in the threshold limit. We combine these two resummed results performing a joint resummation and match to NNLO fixed order results yielding predictions for the pair invariant mass (PIM) and top quark $p_T$ distributions at NNLO+NNLL$'$ accuracy. In particular we find the resummed results for the PIM distributions are much more stable with respect to the parametric choice of factorisation scale.

Abstract:Final states in collider experiments are characterized by correlation functions, $\langle E(\vec n_1) \cdots E(\vec n_k) \rangle$, of the energy flow operator $ E(\vec n_i)$. We show that the top quark imprints itself as a peak in the three-point correlator at an angle $\zeta \sim m_t^2/p_T^2$, with $m_t$ the top quark mass and $p_T$ its transverse momentum, providing access to one of the most important parameters of the Standard Model in one of the simplest field theoretical observables. Our analysis provides the first step towards a new paradigm for a precise top mass determination that is, for the first time, highly insensitive to soft physics and underlying event contamination whilst remaining directly calculable from the Standard Model Lagrangian.

Abstract:We report on recent calculations of the differential cross section for top-quark pair production at hadron colliders. The results are differential with respect to the top-pair invariant mass and to the partonic scattering angle. In these calculations, which were carried out by employing soft-collinear effective theory techniques, we resummed threshold logarithms up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic order. Starting from the differential cross section, it is possible to obtain theoretical predictions for the invariant-mass distribution and the total cross section. We summarize here our results for these observables, and we compare them with the results obtained from different calculational methods.

Abstract:Precision predictions for phenomenologically interesting observables such as the $ t\bar{t} $ invariant mass distribution and forward-backward asymmetry in top-quark pair production at hadron colliders require control over the differential cross section in perturbative QCD. In this paper we improve existing calculations of the doubly differential cross section in the invariant mass and scattering angle by using techniques from soft-collinear effective theory to perform an NNLL resummation of threshold logarithms, which become large when the invariant mass M of the top-quark pair approaches the partonic center-of-mass energy $ \sqrt {{\hat{s}}} $. We also derive an approximate formula for the differential cross section at NNLO in fixed-order perturbation theory, which completely determines the coefficients multiplying the singular plus distributions in the variable $ \left( {1 - {{{{M^2}}} \left/ {{\hat{s}}} \right.}} \right) $. We then match our results in the threshold region with the exact results at NLO in fixed-order perturbation theory, and perform a numerical analysis of the invariant mass distribution, the total cross section, and the forward-backward asymmetry. We argue that these are the most accurate predictions available for these observables at present. Using MSTW2008NNLO parton distribution functions (PDFs) along with α s (M Z ) = 0.117 and m t = 173.1 GeV, we obtain for the inclusive production cross sections at the Tevatron and LHC the values $ {{{\sigma }}_{\text{Tevatron}}} = \left( {6.30\pm 0.19_{ - 0.23}^{ + 0.31}} \right){\text{pb}} $ and σ LHC = (149 ± 7 ± 8) pb, where the first error results from scale variations while the second reflects PDF uncertainties.

Abstract:An overview of the latest results for top pair production in association with a vector gauge boson in the ATLAS detector at LHC is presented. The results involving $Z$ and $W$ bosons are recorded at $\sqrt{13}$ TeV collision energy, while the results involving photons are recorded at $\sqrt{7}$ TeV and $\sqrt{8}$ TeV collision energy.

Abstract:The PowHel framework allows to make predictions of total and differential cross-sections of multiparticle hadroproduction processes at both NLO QCD accuracy and NLO QCD matched to Parton Shower, on the basis of the interface between the POWHEG-BOX and HELAC-NLO codes. It has already been applied to study several processes involving a top-antitop pair in association with a third particle or hadronic jet. Our most recent predictions concern top-antitop-V hadroproduction (with V = W or Z), at both parton and hadron level, by considering different decay channels (hadronic and leptonic) of the heavy particles. In particular, we show the results of our phenomenological analyses under the same system of cuts also recently adopted by the CMS collaboration at LHC.

Abstract:We construct predictions for top quark pair differential distributions at hadron colliders that combine state-of-the-art NNLO QCD calculations with double resummation at NNLL′ accuracy of threshold logarithms arising from soft gluon emissions and of small mass logarithms. This is the first time a resummed calculation at full NNLO+NNLL′ accuracy in QCD for a process with non-trivial color structure has been completed at the differential level. Of main interest to us is the stability of the $ {M}_{t\overline{t}} $ and top-quark pT distributions in the boosted regime where fixed order calculations may become strongly dependent on the choice of dynamic scales. With the help of numeric and analytic arguments we confirm that the choice for the factorization and renormalization scales advocated recently by some of the authors is indeed optimal. We further derive a set of optimized kinematics-dependent scales for the matching functions which appear in the resummed calculations. Our NNLO+NNLL′ prediction for the top-pair invariant mass is significantly less sensitive to the choice of factorization scale than the fixed order prediction, even at NNLO. Notably, the resummed and fixed order calculations are in nearly perfect agreement with each other in the full $ {M}_{t\overline{t}} $ range when the optimal dynamic scale is used. For the top-quark pT distribution the resummation performed here has less of an impact and instead we find that upgrading the matching with fixed-order from NLO+NNLL′ to NNLO+NNLL′ to be an important effect, a point to be kept in mind when using NLO-based Monte Carlo event generators to calculate this distribution.

Abstract:We discuss the impact of eligible top-quark pair production differential cross-section measurements at the LHC with a collision energy of 13 TeV on the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton as well as the impact of approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (aN$^3$LO) QCD corrections combined with next-to-leading order (NLO) electroweak (EW) corrections on $t\bar t$ observables. We illustrate the effects on the gluon PDF at large $x$ from an optimal baseline selection of data in NNLO global fits, and show comparisons between the theory prediction for $t\bar t$ total and differential cross sections at aN$^3$LO QCD combined with NLO EW and recent measurements from the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC.

Complete NLO corrections to off-shell $\text{t}\overline{\text{t}}\text{Z}$ production at the LHC

Abstract:Measuring precisely top-pair-associated processes at hadron colliders will become possible with the upcoming LHC running stages. The increased data statistics will especially enable differential measurements leading to an improved characterisation of such processes. Aiming at a consistent data-theory comparison, precise Standard-Model predictions are needed, including higher-order corrections and full off-shell effects. In this work we present NLO-accurate predictions for the production and decay of a top-antitop pair in association with a Z boson at the LHC, in the multi-lepton decay channel. The complete set of LO contributions and NLO corrections of EW and QCD origin is included. The calculation is based on full matrix elements, computed with all resonant and non-resonant contributions, complete spin correlations and interference effects. Integrated and differential cross-sections are presented for a realistic fiducial setup.

Abstract:We make use of recent results in effective theory and higher-order perturbative calculations to im- prove the theoretical predictions of the QCD contribution to the top-quark pair production forward- backward asymmetry at the Tevatron. In particular, we supplement the fixed-order NLO calculation with higher-order corrections from soft gluon resummation at NNLL accuracy performed in two dif- ferent kinematic schemes, which allows us to make improved predictions for the asymmetry in the pp and tt rest frames as a function of the rapidity and invariant mass of the tt pair. Furthermore, we provide binned results which can be compared with the recent measurements of the forward- backward asymmetry in events with a large pair invariant mass or rapidity difference. Finally, we calculate at NLO+NNLL order the top-quark charge asymmetry at the LHC as a function of a lower rapidity cut-off for the top and antitop quarks.
Top Quark Pair Production at Small Transverse Momentum in Hadronic Collisions

Abstract:We investigate the transverse momentum resummation for top quark pair production at hadron colliders using the soft-collinear effective theory and the heavy-quark effective theory. We derive the factorization formula for t (t) over bar production at the small pair transverse momentum, and show in detail the procedure for calculating the key ingredient of the factorization formula: the next-to-leading order soft functions. We compare our numerical results with experimental data and find that they are consistent within theoretical and experimental uncertainties. To verify the correctness of our resummation formula, we expand it to the next-to-leading order and the next-to-next-to-leading order, and compare those expressions with the exact fixed-order results numerically. Finally, using the results of transverse momentum resummation, we discuss the transverse-momentum-dependent forward-backward asymmetry at the Tevatron.

Abstract:Triggered by the observation of four top-quark production at the LHC by the ATLAS and CMS collaboration we report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the Standard Model process pp → in the 4 l top-quark decay channel. We take into account higher-order QCD effects in both the production and decays of the four top quarks. The latter effects are treated in the narrow width approximation, which preserves top-quark spin correlations throughout the calculation. We present results for two selected renormalisation and factorisation scale settings and three different PDF sets. Furthermore, we study the main theoretical uncertainties that are associated with the neglected higher-order terms in the perturbative expansion and with the parameterisation of the PDF sets. The results at the integrated and differential fiducial cross-section level are shown for the LHC Run III center-of-mass energy of = 136 TeV. Our findings are particularly relevant for precise measurements of the four top-quark fiducial cross sections and for the modelling of top-quark decays at the LHC.

Top-quark Pair Production at High Invariant Mass: an NNLO Soft Plus Virtual Approximation

Abstract:We obtain a soft plus virtual approximation to the NNLO QCD contributions to the top-pair invariant mass distribution at hadron colliders. It is valid up to corrections of order m_t^2/M^2, with M the pair invariant mass. This is currently the most complete QCD calculation for a differential cross section in top-quark pair production, and is useful for describing the high invariant mass region characteristic of boosted top quarks. We use our results to construct an improved NNLO approximation for the pair invariant mass distribution and compare it with previous, less complete approximations based on logarithmic terms from NNLL soft-gluon resummation alone. We find that the new NNLO approximation produces moderate enhancements of the differential cross section compared to previous ones, the effect being slightly more important at low values of invariant mass than at high ones. On the other hand, at high values of invariant mass the new NNLO corrections are dominated by even higher-order effects included in NNLL soft-gluon resummation, reaffirming the need for resummation in describing the highly boosted regime.
Top-quark pole mass extraction at NNLO accuracy, from total, single- and double-differential cross sections for $t\bar{t}+X$ production at the LHC

Abstract:We extract the top-quark mass value in the on-shell renormalization scheme from the comparison of theoretical predictions for $pp \rightarrow t\bar{t} + X$ at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD accuracy with experimental data collected by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations for absolute total, normalized single-differential and double-differential cross-sections during Run 1, Run 2 and the ongoing Run 3 at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). For the theory computations of heavy-quark pair-production we use the MATRIX framework, interfaced to PineAPPL for the generation of grids of theory predictions, which can be efficiently used a-posteriori during the fit, performed within xFitter. We take several state-of-the-art parton distribution functions (PDFs) as input for the fit and evaluate their associated uncertainties, as well as the uncertainties arising from renormalization and factorization scale variation. Fit uncertainties related to the datasets are also part of the extracted uncertainty of the top-quark mass and turn out to be of similar size as the combined scale and PDF uncertainty. Fit results from different PDF sets agree among each other within 1$\sigma$ uncertainty, whereas some datasets related to $t\bar{t}$ decay in different channels (dileptonic vs. semileptonic) point towards top-quark mass values in slight tension among each other, although still compatible within $2.5 \sigma$ accuracy. Our results are compatible with the PDG 2022 top-quark pole-mass value. Our work opens the road towards more complex simultaneous NNLO fits of PDFs, the strong coupling $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ and the top-quark mass, using the currently most precise experimental data on $t\bar{t} + X$ total and multi-differential cross-sections from the LHC.
