Abstract:We use Bieri-Strebel invariants to determine when a normal fibre product in the product of two finitely presented groups is finitely presented. We give conditions that imply and in some cases characterize the existence of such finitely presented fibre products.

Abstract:We establish a general criterion for the finite presentability of subdirect products of groups and use this to characterize finitely presented residually free groups. We prove that, for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$, a residually free group is of type ${\rm{FP}}_n$ if and only if it is of type ${\rm{F}}_n$. New families of subdirect products of free groups are constructed, including the first examples of finitely presented subgroups that are neither ${\rm{FP}}_\infty$ nor of Stallings-Bieri type. The template for these examples leads to a more constructive characterization of finitely presented residually free groups up to commensurability. We show that the class of finitely presented residually free groups is recursively enumerable and present a reduction of the isomorphism problem. A new algorithm is described which, given a finite presentation of a residually free group, constructs a canonical embedding into a direct product of finitely many limit groups. The (multiple) conjugacy and membership problems for finitely presented subgroups of residually free groups are solved.

Abstract:We provide necessary and/or sufficient conditions for the stable Hom functors to be finitely presented. When the covariant Hom functor modulo projectives is finitely presented, its defect is isomorphic to the Bass torsion of the fixed argument. When the contravariant Hom functor modulo injectives is finitely presented, its defect is isomorphic to the cotorsion of the fixed argument. We also give a sufficient condition for the sub-stabilization of the tensor product to be finitely presented. A finite presentation of the tensor product leads to an unexpected application to injective modules.

Abstract:There has been substantial investigation in recent years of subdirect products of limit groups and their finite presentability and homological finiteness properties. To contrast the results obtained for limit groups, Baumslag, Bridson, Holt and Miller investigated subdirect products (fibre products) of finitely presented metabelian groups. They showed that, in contrast to the case for limit groups, such subdirect products could have diverse behaviour with respect to finite presentability. We show that, in a sense that can be made precise, `most' subdirect products of a finite set of finitely presented metabelian groups are again finitely presented. To be a little more precise, we assign to each subdirect product a point of an algebraic variety and show that, in most cases, those points which correspond to non-finitely presented subdirect products form a subvariety of smaller dimension.

Abstract:A result by Bridson, Howie, Miller, and Short states that if $S$ is a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of free groups, then $S$ is virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of free groups. Moreover, if $S$ is a subgroup of type $FP_n$ of the direct product of $n$ free groups, then the nilpotent extension is finite, so $S$ is actually virtually the direct product of free groups. In this paper, these results are generalized to $2$-dimensional coherent right-angled Artin groups. More precisely, we show that a finitely presented subgroup of the direct product of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs is still virtually a nilpotent extension of a direct product of subgroups. If $S$ is moreover a type $FP_n$ subgroup of the direct product of $n$ $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs, then $S$ is commensurable to a kernel of a character of a direct product of subgroups. Finally, we show that the multiple conjugacy problem and the membership problem are decidable for finitely presented subgroups of direct products of $2$-dimensional coherent RAAGs.

For every representation , where is a local field, we establish upper bounds for the norm of the Cartan projection of in terms of a fixed word length function on . As an application, we exhibit examples of finitely generated and finitely presented fiber products , where is linear and Gromov hyperbolic, such that does not admit linear representations that are quasi‐isometric embeddings.

Abstract:In this paper we study obstructions to presentability by products for finitely generated groups. Along the way we develop both the concept of acentral subgroups, and the relations between presentability by products on the one hand, and certain geometric and measure or orbit equivalence invariants of groups on the other. This leads to many new examples of groups not presentable by products, including all groups with infinitely many ends, the (outer) automorphism groups of free groups, Thompson's groups, and even some elementary amenable groups.

Abstract:We prove a variant of the well-known Reidemeister-Schreier theorem for finitely $L$-presented groups. More precisely, we prove that each finite index subgroup of a finitely $L$-presented group is itself finitely $L$-presented. Our proof is constructive and it yields a finite $L$-presentation for the subgroup. We further study conditions on a finite index subgroup of an invariantly finitely $L$-presented group to be invariantly $L$-presented itself.

Abstract:A product of compact normal spaces is normal; the product of a countably infinite collection of non-trivial spaces is normal if and only if it is countably paracompact and each of its finite sub-products is normal; if all powers of a space X are normal then X is compact: provided in each case that the spaces involved are T1. Here I examine the situation for infinite products not required to be T1 (or regular), extending or generalizing each of these facts. In addition, I prove some related results, give a number of examples, explore some alternative proofs, and close with some speculation regarding potential applications of these findings to category theory and lattice theory.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finitely generated group. We prove that the $n$-fold tensor product $G^{\otimes n}$ is finite (resp. polycyclic) if and only $G$ is finite (resp. polycyclic). Abstract:We analyse the subgroup structure of direct products of groups. Earlier work on this topic has revealed that higher finiteness properties play a crucial role in determining which groups appear as subgroups of direct products of free groups or limit groups. Here, we seek to relate the finiteness properties of a subgroup to the way it is embedded in the ambient product. To this end we formulate a conjecture on finiteness properties of fibre products of groups. We present different approaches to this conjecture, proving a general result on finite generation of homology groups of fibre products and, for certain special cases, results on the stronger finiteness properties F_n and FP_n.

Abstract:We study conditions under which subdirect products of various types of algebraic structures are finitely generated or finitely presented. In the case of two factors, we prove general results for arbitrary congruence permutable varieties, which generalise previously known results for groups, and which apply to modules, rings, $K$-algebras and loops. For instance, if $C$ is a fiber product of $A$ and $B$ over a common quotient $D$, and if $A$, $B$ and $D$ are finitely presented, then $C$ is finitely generated. For subdirect products of more than two factors we establish a general connection with projections on pairs of factors and higher commutators. More detailed results are provided for groups, loops, rings and $K$-algebras. In particular, let $C$ be a subdirect product of $K$-algebras $A_1,\dots,A_n$ for a Noetherian ring $K$ such that the projection of $C$ onto any $A_i\times A_j$ has finite co-rank in $A_i\times A_j$. Then $C$ is finitely generated (resp. finitely presented) if and only if all $A_i$ are finitely generated (resp. finitely presented). Finally, examples of semigroups and lattices are provided which indicate further complications as one ventures beyond congruence permutable varieties.

Some of these rings cannot be minimally resolved with a free resolution using the recent work of the second author. Abstract:Let $R$ be a fibre product of standard graded algebras over a field. We study the structure of syzygies of finitely generated graded $R$-modules. As an application of this, we show that the existence of an $R$-module of finite regularity and infinite projective dimension forces $R$ to be Koszul. We also look at the extremal rays of the Betti cone of finitely generated graded $R$-modules, and show that when $\operatorname{depth}(R)=1$, they are spanned by the Betti tables of pure $R$-modules if and only if $R$ is Cohen-Macaulay with minimal multiplicity.

Abstract:We prove that there exist finitely presented, residually finite groups that are profinitely rigid in the class of all finitely presented groups but not in the class of all finitely generated groups. These groups are of the form $\Gamma \times \Gamma$ where $\Gamma$ is a profinitely rigid 3-manifold group; we describe a family of such groups with the property that if $P$ is a finitely generated, residually finite group with $\widehat{P}\cong\widehat{\Gamma\times\Gamma}$ then there is an embedding $P\hookrightarrow\Gamma\times\Gamma$ that induces the profinite isomorphism; in each case there are infinitely many non-isomorphic possibilities for $P$.
