Abstract:Supermassive black holes in the centers of active galactic nuclei (AGN) are surrounded by broad-line regions (BLRs). The broad emission lines seen in the AGN spectra are emitted in this spatially unresolved region. We intend to obtain information on the structure and geometry of this BLR based on observed line profiles. We modeled the rotational and turbulent velocities in the line-emitting region on the basis of the line-width FWHM and line dispersion sigma_line of the variable broad emission lines in NGC5548. Based on these velocities we estimated the height of the line-emitting regions above the midplane in the context of their distances from the center. The broad emission lines originate at distances of 2 to 27 light days from the center. Higher ionized lines originate in the inner region (lesser equal 13 light days) in specific filamentary structures 1 to 14 light days above the midplane. In contrast, the Hbeta line is emitted in an outer (6 - 26 light days), more flattened configuration at heights of 0.7 to 4 light days only above the midplane. The derived geometry of the line-emitting region in NGC5548 is consistent with an outflowing wind launched from an accretion disk.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is related to the structure and geometry of the broad - line region (BLR) in active galactic nuclei (AGN). Specifically, the author aims to obtain structural information of the broad - line region by analyzing the profiles of broad emission lines in NGC 5548, especially how these broad emission lines are generated from the accretion disk around the central super - massive black hole and their distribution in space. By studying the full width at half - maximum (FWHM) and line dispersion (σ_line) of broad emission lines in different ionization states (such as Hβ, He II λ4686, C IV λ1549, etc.), the author hopes to infer the height and distance of these emission line regions, thereby revealing the specific geometric structure of the broad - line region. The main conclusion of the paper is that the broad emission lines in NGC 5548 are mainly sourced from the region 2 to 27 light - days away from the center, where the highly ionized lines are mainly from the inner region (≤13 light - days), while the Hβ line is emitted in a more outer (6 - 26 light - days) and flatter configuration with a height of only 0.7 to 4 light - days. These results are consistent with the outflow wind model from the accretion disk, indicating that the structure of the broad - line region may be formed by this outflow wind.
