Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.

Abstract:Using Gauss-Manin derivatives of normal functions, we arrive at some remarkable results on the non-triviality of the transcendental regulator for $K_m$ of a very general projective algebraic manifold. Our strongest results are for the transcendental regulator for $K_1$ of a very general $K3$ surface. We also construct an explicit family of $K_1$ cycles on $H \oplus E_8 \oplus E_8$-polarized $K3$ surfaces, and show they are indecomposable by a direct evaluation of the real regulator. Critical use is made of natural elliptic fibrations, hypersurface normal forms, and an explicit parametrization by modular functions.

Abstract:After noticing that the regulator of a number field dominates the rank of its group of units, we bound from below the regulator of the Mordell-Weil group of elliptic curves over global function fields of characteristic $p\geq5$. The lower bound is an increasing function of the rank and of the height.

Abstract:We introduce "derived Bockstein regulators" by using an idea of Nekovář. We establish a general descent formalism involving derived Bockstein regulators. We give three applications of this formalism. Firstly, we show that a conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer type for Heegner points formulated by Bertolini and Darmon in 1996 follows from Perrin-Riou's Heegner point main conjecture up to a $p$-adic unit. Secondly, we show that a $p$-adic Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for the Bertolini-Darmon-Prasanna $p$-adic $L$-function recently formulated by Agboola and Castella follows from the Iwasawa-Greenberg main conjecture up to a $p$-adic unit. Finally, we extend conjectures and results on derivatives of Euler systems for a general motive given by Kataoka and the present author into a natural derived setting.

Abstract:We will formulate and prove a certain reciprocity law relating certain residues of the differential symbol dlog^2 from the K_2 of a Mumford curve to the rigid analytic regulator constructed by the author in a previous paper. We will use this result to deduce some consequences on the kernel and image of the rigid analytic regulator analogous to some old conjectures of Beilinson and Bloch on the complex analytic regulator. We also relate our construction to the symbol defined by Contou-Carrere and to Kato's residue homomorphism, and we show that Weil's reciprocity law directly implies the reciprocity law of Anderson and Romo.

Real regulator maps with finite 0-locus

Abstract:A Laurent polynomial in two variables is tempered if its edge polynomials are cyclotomic. Variation of coefficients leads to a family of smooth complete genus $g$ curves carrying a canonical algebraic $K_2$-class over a $g$-dimensional base $S$, hence to an extension of admissible variations of MHS (or normal function) on $S$. We prove that the $\mathbb{R}$-split locus of this extension is finite. Consequently, the torsion locus of the normal function and the $A$-polynomial locus for the family of curves are also finite.

Abstract:We describe and give computational results of a procedure to compute the divisor class number and regulator of most purely cubic function fields of unit rank 2. Our implementation is an improvement to Pollard's Kangaroo method in infrastructures, using distribution results of class numbers as well as information on the congruence class of the divisor class number, and an adaptation that efficiently navigates these torus-shaped infrastructures. Moreover, this is the first time that an efficient "square-root" algorithm has been applied to the infrastructure of a global field of unit rank 2. With the exception of certain function fields defined by Picard curves, our examples are the largest known divisor class numbers and regulators ever computed for a function field of genus 3.

Abstract:We compare general inequalities between invariants of number fields and invariants of abelian varieties over number fields. On the number field side, we remark that there is only a finite number of non-CM number fields with bounded regulator. On the abelian side, assuming the height conjecture of Lang and Silverman, we obtain a Northcott property for the regulator on the set of abelian varieties with dense rational points over a number field. This amounts to say that the arithmetic of CM fields is similar, with respect to the invariants considered here, to the arithmetic of abelian varieties over a number field having a non Zariski dense Mordell-Weil group.

Abstract:The electronic and magnetic properties of concentrated and diluted ferromagnetic semiconductors are investigated by using the Kondo lattice model, which describes an interband exchange coupling between itinerant conduction electrons and localized magnetic moments. In our calculations, the electronic problem and the local magnetic problem are solved separately. For the electronic part an interpolating self-energy approach together with a coherent potential approximation (CPA) treatment of a dynamical alloy analogy is used to calculate temperature-dependent quasiparticle densities of states and the electronic self-energy of the diluted local-moment system. For constructing the magnetic phase diagram we use a modified RKKY theory by mapping the interband exchange to an effective Heisenberg model. The exchange integrals appear as functionals of the diluted electronic self-energy being therefore temperature- and carrier-concentration-dependent and covering RKKY as well as double exchange behavior. The disorder of the localized moments in the effective Heisenberg model is solved by a generalized locator CPA approach. The main results are: 1) extremely low carrier concentrations are sufficient to induce ferromagnetism; 2) the Curie temperature exhibits a strikingly non-monotonic behavior as a function of carrier concentration with a distinct maximum; 3) $T_C$ curves break down at critical $n/x$ due to antiferromagnetic correlations and 4) the dilution always lowers $T_C$ but broadens the ferromagnetic region with respect to carrier concentration.

Abstract:In this paper, by using the regulator map of Beilinson-Deligne on a curve, we show that the quantization condition posed by Gukov is true for the SL2(ℂ) character variety of the hyperbolic knot in S3. Furthermore, we prove that the corresponding ℂ*-valued closed 1-form is a secondary characteristic class (Chern-Simons) arising from the vanishing first Chern class of the flat line bundle over the smooth part of the character variety, where the flat line bundle is the pullback of the universal Heisenberg line bundle over ℂ* × ℂ*. Based on this result, we give a reformulation of Gukov's generalized volume conjecture from a motivic perspective.

Abstract:We generalize the result of Reid (J Lond Math Soc 13:454–458, 1976), namely, we prove that a curve of genus having a double cover of a hyperelliptic curve of genus does not lie as a non-singular curve on any K3 surface. Applying this result we construct non-K3 Weierstrass numerical semigroups. A numerical semigroup H is said to be Weierstrass if there exists a pointed non-singular curve ( C , P ) such that H consists of non-negative integers which are the pole orders at P of a rational function on C having a pole only at P . We call the numerical semigroup K3 if we can take the curve C as a curve on some K3 surface. A non-K3 numerical semigroup means that it cannot be attained by a pointed non-singular curve on any K3 surface. We also give infinite sequences of non-K3 Weierstrass numerical semigroups.

Abstract:We construct a family of elliptic surfaces with $p_g=q=1$ that arise from base change of the Hesse pencil. We identify explicitly a component of the higher Noether-Lefschetz locus with positive Mordell-Weil rank, and a particular surface having maximal Picard number and defined over $\mathbb Q$. These examples satisfy the infinitesimal Torelli theorem, providing a second proof of the dominance of period map, which was first obtained by Engel-Greer-Ward. A third proof is provided using the Shioda modular surface associated with $\Gamma_0(11)$. Finally, we find birational models for the degenerations at the boundary of the one-dimensional Noether-Lefschetz locus, and extend the period map at those limit points.

Abstract:We calculate the Beilinson regulators of motives associated to Fermat curves and express them by special values of generalized hypergeometric functions. As a result, we obtain surjectivity results of the regulator, which support the Beilinson conjecture on special values of L-functions.

Abstract:We prove the first cases of a conjecture by Darmon--Rotger on the non-vanishing of generalized Kato classes attached to elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbf{Q}$ of rank $2$. Our method also shows that the non-vanishing of generalized Kato classes implies that the $p$-adic Selmer group of $E$ is $2$-dimensional. The main novelty in the proof is a formula for the leading term at the trivial character of an anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-function attached to $E$ in terms of the derived $p$-adic height of generalized Kato classes and an enhanced $p$-adic regulator.

Integral Regulators on Mirror Curves with Mass Parameter

Abstract:In 2015, Codesido-Grassi-Marino laid the foundation of a connection between local CY 3-folds and the spectra of operators attached to their mirror curves in the context of Topological String Theory. In a 2024 paper with C. Doran and M. Kerr, the author previously deduced two consequences of this conjecture; one relating zeroes of higher normal function to the spectra of operators of genus one curves, the other connecting integral regulators of $K_2$-classes on mirror curves to dilogarithm values at algebraic arguments. We now show that the latter continues to hold in the presence of a mass parameter, thus expanding the range of the conjecture.

Abstract:I demonstrate that, under certain circumstances, regions of negative energy density can undergo gravitational collapse into a black hole. The resultant exterior black hole spacetimes necessarily have negative mass and non-trivial topology. A full theory of quantum gravity, in which topology-changing processes take place, could give rise to such spacetimes.

Abstract:Let $E/\mathbf{Q}$ be a CM elliptic curve and let $p\geq 5$ be a prime of good ordinary reduction for $E$. Suppose that $L(E,s)$ vanishes at $s=1$ and has sign $+1$ in its functional equation, so in particular ${\rm ord}_{s=1}L(E,s)\geq 2$. In this paper we slightly modify a construction of Darmon--Rotger to define a generalised Kato class $\kappa_p\in{\rm Sel}(\mathbf{Q},V_pE)$, and prove the following rank two analogue of Kolyvagin's result: \[ \kappa_p\neq 0\quad\Longrightarrow\quad{\rm dim}_{\mathbf{Q}_p}{\rm Sel}(\mathbf{Q},V_pE)=2. \] Conversely, when ${\rm dim}_{\mathbf{Q}_p}{\rm Sel}(\mathbf{Q},V_pE)=2$ we show that $\kappa_p\neq 0$ \emph{if and only if} the restriction map \[ {\rm Sel}(\mathbf{Q},V_pE)\rightarrow E(\mathbf{Q}_p)\hat\otimes\mathbf{Q}_p \] is nonzero. The proof of these results, which extend and strenghten similar results of the author with Hsieh in the non-CM case, exploit a new link between the nonvanishing of generalised Kato classes and a main conjecture in anticyclotomic Iwasawa theory.

Abstract:We use the elliptic regulator to recover some identities between Mahler measures involving certain families of genus 2 curves that were conjectured by Boyd and proven by Bertin and Zudilin by differentiating the Mahler measures and using hypergeometric identities. Since our proofs involve the regulator, they yield light into the expected relation of each Mahler measure to special values of $L$-functions of certain elliptic curves.
