Abstract:The rank of a graph is defined to be the rank of its adjacency matrix. A graph is called reduced if it has no isolated vertices and no two vertices with the same set of neighbors. We determine the maximum order of reduced triangle-free graphs with a given rank and characterize all such graphs achieving the maximum order.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex triangle-free graph. The celebrated Mantel's theorem showed that $e(G)\leq \lfloor\frac{n^2}{4}\rfloor$. In 1962, Erdős (together with Gallai), and independently Andrásfai, proved that if $G$ is non-bipartite then $e(G)\leq \lfloor\frac{(n-1)^2}{4}\rfloor+1$. In this paper, we extend this result and show that if $G$ has chromatic number at least four and $n\geq 150$, then $e(G)\leq \lfloor\frac{(n-3)^2}{4}\rfloor+5$. The blow-up of Grötzsch graph shows that this bound is best possible.

Abstract:Abstract Bollobás and Nikiforov (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B. 97 (2007) 859–865) conjectured the following. If G is a Kr+1-free graph on at least r+1 vertices and m edges, then ${\rm{\lambda }}_1^2(G) + {\rm{\lambda }}_2^2(G) \le (r - 1)/r \cdot 2m$, where λ1 (G)and λ2 (G) are the largest and the second largest eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix A(G), respectively. In this paper we confirm the conjecture in the case r=2, by using tools from doubly stochastic matrix theory, and also characterize all families of extremal graphs. Motivated by classic theorems due to Erdös and Nosal respectively, we prove that every non-bipartite graph of order and size contains a triangle if one of the following is true: (i) ${{\rm{\lambda }}_1}(G) \ge \sqrt {m - 1} $ and $G \ne {C_5} \cup (n - 5){K_1}$, and (ii) ${{\rm{\lambda }}_1}(G) \ge {{\rm{\lambda }}_1}(S({K_{[(n - 1)/2],[(n - 1)/2]}}))$ and $G \ne S({K_{[(n - 1)/2],[(n - 1)/2]}})$, where $S({K_{[(n - 1)/2],[(n - 1)/2]}})$ is obtained from ${K_{[(n - 1)/2],[(n - 1)/2]}}$ by subdividing an edge. Both conditions are best possible. We conclude this paper with some open problems.

Abstract:Vizing’s planar graph conjecture remains open for planar graphs with maximum degree 6. In this note, we prove that if each triangle of a planar graph G with maximum degree 6 has a vertex incident with only one triangle, then the chromatic index of G is 6 which means that G is of class one.

Abstract:Algebra Colloquium, Volume 31, Issue 03, Page 525-540, September 2024. A graph [math] is called triangle-free if [math] does not contain any triangle as its induced subgraph. Let [math] be the set of triangle-free graphs of order [math] each of which has three positive eigenvalues. In this paper, we find 20 specific graphs in [math], each of which has nullity no more than 2, and we show that in terms of three graph transformations all the other graphs of [math] can be constructed from these 20 specific graphs. Hence, we completely characterize the triangle-free graphs with exactly three positive eigenvalues.

Abstract:The generalized Turán number $ex(n,K_s,H)$ is the maximum number of complete graph $K_s$ in an $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. Let $F_k$ be the friendship graph consisting of $k$ triangles. Erdős and Sós (1976) determined the value of $ex(n,K_3,F_2)$. Alon and Shikhelman (2016) proved that $ex(n,K_3, F_k)\le (9k-15)(k+1)n.$ In this paper, by using a method developed by Chung and Frankl in hypergraph theory, we determine the exact value of $ex(n,K_3,F_k)$ and the extremal graph for any $F_k$ when $n\ge 4k^3$.

Abstract:Given a simple graph G, let A(G) be its adjacency matrix and α′(G) be its matching number. The rank of G, written as r(G), refers to the rank of A(G). In this paper, some relations between the rank and the matching number of a graph are studied. Firstly, it is proved that −2d(G)⩽r(G)−2α′(G)⩽No, where d(G) and No are, respectively, the dimension of cycle space and the number of odd cycles of G. Secondly, sharp lower bounds on both r(G)−α′(G) and r(G)/α′(G) are determined. All the corresponding extremal graphs are characterized, respectively.

Abstract:The minimum rank of a simple graph $G$ is defined to be the smallest possible rank over all symmetric real matrices whose $ij$th entry (for $i\neq j$) is nonzero whenever $\{i,j\}$ is an edge in $G$ and is zero otherwise. Minimum rank is a difficult parameter to compute. However, there are now a number of known reduction techniques and bounds that can be programmed on a computer; we have developed a program using the open-source mathematics software Sage to implement several techniques. We have also established several additional strategies for computation of minimum rank. These techniques have been used to determine the minimum ranks of all graphs of order 7. This paper contains a list of minimum ranks for all graphs of order at most 7. We also present selected optimal matrices.

Abstract:Let $\Gamma=(G,\sigma)$ be a signed graph and $A(G,\sigma)$ be its adjacency matrix. Denote by $gr(G)$ the girth of $G$, which is the length of the shortest cycle in $G$. Let $r(G,\sigma)$ be the rank of $(G,\sigma)$. In this paper, we will prove that $r(G,\sigma)\geq gr(G)-2$ for a signed graph $(G,\sigma)$. Moreover, we characterize all extremal graphs which satisfy the equalities $r(G,\sigma)=gr(G)-2$ and $r(G,\sigma)=gr(G)$.
The Planar Turán Number of $Θ_6$-graphs

Abstract:There are two particular $\Theta_6$-graphs - the 6-cycle graphs with a diagonal. We find the planar Turán number of each of them, i.e. the maximum number of edges in a planar graph $G$ of $n$ vertices not containing the given $\Theta_6$ as a subgraph and we find infinitely many extremal constructions showing the sharpness of these results - apart from a small additive constant error in one of the cases.

Abstract:The celebrated Andrásfai--Erdős--Sós Theorem from 1974 shows that every $n$-vertex triangle-free graph with minimum degree greater than $2n/5$ must be bipartite. We establish a positive codegree extension of this result for the $r$-uniform generalized triangle $\mathrm{T}_{r} = \left\{\{1,\ldots, r-1,r\}, \{1,\ldots, r-1,r+1\},\{r,r+1, \ldots, 2r-1\}\right\}$$\colon$ For every $n \ge (r-1)(2r+1)/2$, if $\mathcal{H}$ is an $n$-vertex $\mathrm{T}_{r}$-free $r$-uniform hypergraph in which each $(r-1)$-tuple of vertices is contained in either zero edges or more than $2n/(2r+1)$ edges of $\mathcal{H}$, then $\mathcal{H}$ is $r$-partite. This result provides the first tight positive codegree Andr{á}sfai--Erdős--Sós type theorem for hypergraphs. It also immediately implies that the positive codegree Turán number of $\mathrm{T}_{r}$ is $\lfloor n/r \rfloor$ for all $r$. Additionally, for $r=3$, our result answers one of the questions posed by Hou et al.~\cite{HLYZZ22} in a strong form.

Abstract:The triangle-degree of a vertex v of a simple graph G is the number of triangles in G that contain v. A simple graph is triangle-distinct if all its vertices have distinct triangle-degrees. Berikkyzy et al. [Discrete Math. 347 (2024) 113695] recently asked whether there exists a regular graph that is triangle-distinct. Here we showcase the examples of regular, triangle-distinct graphs with orders between 21 and 27, and report on the methodology used to find them.

In the paper, we show that for any graph G of order n , . We pose a conjecture that for a graph G of order n . For supporting it, we show that the conjecture holds for any triangle-free graphs, Cartesian, direct, lexicographic product of any two graphs.

Abstract:There are four non-isomorphic configurations of triples that can form a triangle in a $3$-uniform hypergraph. Forbidding different combinations of these four configurations, fifteen extremal problems can be defined, several of which already appeared in the literature in some different context. Here we systematically study all of these problems solving the new cases exactly or asymptotically. In many cases we also characterize the extremal constructions.

Abstract:Motivated by problems in algebraic complexity theory (e.g., matrix multiplication) and extremal combinatorics (e.g., the cap set problem and the sunflower problem), we introduce the geometric rank as a new tool in the study of tensors and hypergraphs. We prove that the geometric rank is an upper bound on the subrank of tensors and the independence number of hypergraphs. We prove that the geometric rank is smaller than the slice rank of Tao, and relate geometric rank to the analytic rank of Gowers and Wolf in an asymptotic fashion. As a first application, we use geometric rank to prove a tight upper bound on the (border) subrank of the matrix multiplication tensors, matching Strassen's well-known lower bound from 1987.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that there exist triangle-free graphs with arbitrarily large toughness, thereby settling a longstanding open question. We also explore the problem of whether there exists a t-tough, n/(t + 1)-regular, triangle-free graph on n vertices for various values of t, and provide a relatively complete answer for small values of t.

Abstract:One of the most fundamental results in graph theory is Mantel's theorem which determines the maximum number of edges in a triangle-free graph of order $n$. Recently a colorful variant of this problem has been solved. In such a variant we consider $c$ graphs on a common vertex set, thinking of each graph as edges in a distinct color, and want to determine the smallest number of edges in each color which guarantees existence of a rainbow triangle. Here, we solve the analogous problem for directed graphs without rainbow triangles, either directed or transitive, for any number of colors. The constructions and proofs essentially differ for $c=3$ and $c \geq 4$ and the type of the forbidden triangle. Additionally, we also solve the analogous problem in the setting of oriented graphs.

Abstract:The $A_{\alpha}$-matrix of a graph $G$ is the convex linear combination of the adjacency matrix $A(G)$ and the diagonal matrix of vertex degrees $D(G)$, i.e., $A_{\alpha}(G) = \alpha D(G) + (1 - \alpha)A(G)$, where $0\leq\alpha \leq1$. The $\alpha$-index of $G$ is the largest eigenvalue of $A_\alpha(G)$. Particularly, the matrix $A_0(G)$ (resp. $2A_{\frac{1}{2}}(G)$) is exactly the adjacency matrix (resp. signless Laplacian matrix) of $G$. He, Li and Feng [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2301.06008" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.06008">arXiv:2301.06008</a> (2023)] determined the extremal graphs with maximum adjacency spectral radius among all graphs of sufficiently large order without intersecting triangles and quadrangles as a minor, respectively. Motivated by the above results of He, Li and Feng, in this paper we characterize the extremal graphs with maximum $\alpha$-index among all graphs of sufficiently large order without intersecting triangles and quadrangles as a minor for any $0<\alpha<1$, respectively. As by-products, we determine the extremal graphs with maximum signless Laplacian radius among all graphs of sufficiently large order without intersecting triangles and quadrangles as a minor, respectively.
