Abstract:We develop a direct and elementary (calculus-free) exposition of the famous cubic surface of revolution x^3+y^3+z^3-3xyz=1.12 pages. We have added a second elementary proof that the surface is of revolution.

Abstract:We consider surfaces of revolution in the three-dimensional Euclidean space which are of coordinate finite type with respect to the third fundamental form. We show that a surface of revolution satisfying the preceding relation is a catenoid or part of a sphere.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider surfaces of revolution in the 3-dimensional Euclidean space E3 with nonvanishing Gauss curvature. We introduce the finite Chen type surfaces concerning the third fundamental form of the surface. We present a special case of this class of surfaces of revolution in E3, namely, surfaces of revolution where the sum of the radii of the principal curvature R is constant.

Abstract:This paper establishes an interesting connection between the family of CMC surfaces of revolution in $\mathbb E_1^3$ and some specific families of elliptic curves. As a consequence of this connection, we show in the class of spacelike CMC surfaces of revolution in the $\mathbb E_1^3$, only spacelike cylinders and standard hyperboloids are algebraic. We also show that a similar connection exists between CMC surfaces of revolution in $\mathbb E^3$ and elliptic curves. Further, we use this to reestablish the fact that the only CMC algebraic surfaces of revolution in $\mathbb E^3$ are spheres and right circular cylinders.

Abstract:For Legendre curves, we consider surfaces of revolution of frontals. The surface of revolution of a frontal can be considered as a framed base surface. We give the curvatures and basic invariants for surfaces of revolution by using the curvatures of Legendre curves. Moreover, we give properties of surfaces of revolution with singularities and cones.

Abstract:This paper discusses the geometry of a surface endowed with a slope metric. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for any surface of revolution to admit a strongly convex slope metric. Such conditions involve certain inequalities for the derivative of the associated function on the Cartesian coordinate and the polar coordinate. In particular, we apply this result to certain well-know surface of revolution.

Abstract:Let $$1 \to H \to G \to Q \to 1$$ be an exact sequence where $H= \pi_1(S)$ is the fundamental group of a closed surface $S$ of genus greater than one, $G$ is hyperbolic and $Q$ is finitely generated free. The aim of this paper is to provide sufficient conditions to prove that $G$ is cubulable and construct examples satisfying these conditions. The main result may be thought of as a combination theorem for virtually special hyperbolic groups when the amalgamating subgroup is not quasiconvex. Ingredients include the theory of tracks, the quasiconvex hierarchy theorem of Wise, the distance estimates in the mapping class group from subsurface projections due to Masur-Minsky and the model geometry for doubly degenerate Kleinian surface groups used in the proof of the ending lamination theorem. An appendix to this paper by Manning, Mj, and Sageev proves a reduction theorem by showing that cubulability of $G$ follows from the existence of an essential incompressible quasiconvex track in a surface bundle over a graph with fundamental group $G$.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that the constant property of the Gaussian curvature of surfaces of revolution in both $\mathbb R^4$ and $\mathbb R_1^4$ depend only on the radius of rotation. We then give necessary and sufficient conditions for the Gaussian curvature of the general rotational surfaces whose meridians lie in two dimensional planes in $\mathbb R^4$ to be constant, and define the parametrization of the meridians when both the Gaussian curvature is constant and the rates of rotation are equal.

Abstract:New historical aspects of the classification, by Cayley and Cremona, of ruled quartic surfaces and the relation to string models and plaster models are presented. In a `modern' treatment of the classification of ruled quartic surfaces the classical one is corrected and completed. A conceptual proof is presented of a result of Rohn concerning curves in $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ of bi-degree $(2,2)$. The string models of Series XIII (of some ruled quartic surfaces) are based on Rohn's result.

Abstract:In this article, we study the topology and bifurcations of the moduli space M-3 of cubic Newton maps. It's a subspace of the moduli space of cubic rational maps, carrying the Riemann orbifold structure ((C)over-bar, (2, 3, infinity)).We prove two results: The boundary of the unique unbounded hyperbolic component is a Jordan arc and the boundaries of all other hyperbolic components are Jordan curves; The Head's angle map is surjective and monotone. The fibers of this map are characterized completely. The first result is a moduli space analogue of the first author's dynamical regularity theorem [37]. The second result confirms a conjecture of Tan Lei. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Inc.

Abstract:We prove that the complex surfaces parametrizing cuboids and face cuboids, as well as their minimal resolution of singularities, have trivial fundamental group. We then compute the fundamental group of certain open smooth subvarieties of the complex surface parametrizing face cuboids.

Abstract:We show that the family of 21-dimensional intermediate jacobians of cubic fivefolds containing a given cubic fourfold X is generically an algebraic integrable system. In the proof we apply an integrability criterion, introduced and used by Donagi and Markman to find a similar integrable system over the family of cubic threefolds in X. To enter in the conditions of this criterion, we write down explicitly the known by Beauville and Donagi symplectic structure on the family F(X) of lines on the general cubic fourfold X, and prove that the family of planes on a cubic fivefold containing X is embedded as a Lagrangian surface in F(X). By a symplectic reduction we deduce that our integrable system induces on the nodal boundary another integrable system, interpreted generically as the family of 20-dimensional intermediate jacobians of Fano threefolds of genus four contained in X. Along the way we prove an Abel-Jacobi type isomorphism for the Fano surface of conics in the general Fano threefold of genus 4, and compute the numerical invariants of this surface.

Abstract:Let Fq be a finite field with q=8 or q at least 16. Let S be a smooth cubic surface defined over Fq containing at least one rational line. We use a pigeonhole principle to prove that all the rational points on S are generated via tangent and secant operations from a single point.

Abstract:We establish new upper bounds on the number of failures of the integral Hasse principle within the family of Markoff type cubic surfaces $x^2+ y^2+ z^2- xyz= a$ with $|a|\leq A$ as $A\to \infty$. Our bound improves upon existing work of Ghosh and Sarnak. As a result, we demonstrate that the integral Hasse principle holds for a density $1$ of surfaces in certain sparse sequences.

Abstract:We study the integral Brauer--Manin obstruction for affine diagonal cubic surfaces, which we employ to construct the first counterexamples to the integral Hasse principle in this setting. We then count in three natural ways how such counterexamples are distributed across the family of affine diagonal cubic surfaces and how often such surfaces satisfy integral strong approximation off $\infty$.

Abstract:It is a classical result that there are $12$ (irreducible) rational cubic curves through $8$ generic points in $\mathbb{P}_{\mathbb{C}}^2$, but little is known about the non-generic cases. The space of $8$-point configurations is partitioned into strata depending on combinatorial objects we call quatroids, a higher-order version of representable matroids. We compute all $779777$ quatroids on eight distinct points in the plane, which produces a full description of the stratification. For each stratum, we generate several invariants, including the number of rational cubics through a generic configuration. As a byproduct of our investigation, we obtain a collection of results regarding the base loci of pencils of cubics and positive certificates for non-rationality.

Abstract:We prove that the maximal number of conics, a priori irreducible of reducible, on a smooth spatial quartic surface is 800, realized by a unique quartic. We also classify quartics with many (at least 720) conics. The maximal number of real conics on a real quartics is between 656 and 718.

Abstract:We study the singular series associated to a cubic form with integer coefficients. If the number of variables is at least $10$, we prove the absolute convergence (and hence positivity) under the assumption of Davenport's Geometric Condition, improving on a result of Heath-Brown. For the case of $9$ variables, we give a conditional treatment. We also provide a new short and elementary proof of Davenport's Shrinking Lemma which has been a crucial tool in previous literature on this and related problems.
