Abstract:A fixed point theorem is used to study a singular second order three-point boundary value problem. The problem is more general. Combining the method of constructing Green functions with operators defined piecewise, the existence result of positive solutions to a singular second order three-point boundary value problem is established. The nonlinearity can be allowed to change sign.

Abstract:We compute the number of F_q-points on M_{4,n}, for n less than or equal to 3, and show that it is a polynomial in q, using a sieve based on Hasse-Weil zeta functions. As an application, we prove that the rational singular cohomology groups of moduli spaces of stable curves of genus g with n marked points vanish in all odd degrees less than or equal to 9, for all g and n. Both results confirm predictions of the Langlands program, via the conjectural correspondence with polarized algebraic cuspidal automorphic representations of conductor 1, which are classified in low weight. Our vanishing result for odd cohomology resolves a problem posed by Arbarello and Cornalba in the 1990s.

Abstract:We give a dynamical proof of a result of Masser and Zannier [MZ2, MZ3] about torsion points on the Legendre family of elliptic curves. Our methods also treat points of small height. A key ingredient is the arithmetic equidistribution theorem on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of Baker-Rumely, Chambert-Loir, and Favre-Rivera-Letelier. Torsion points on the elliptic curve coincide with preperiodic points for the degree-4 Lattes family of rational functions. Our main new results concern properties of the bifurcation measures for this Lattes family associated to marked points.

Abstract:Using the celebrated Witten-Kontsevich theorem, we prove a recursive formula of the $n$-point functions for intersection numbers on moduli spaces of curves. It has been used to prove the Faber intersection number conjecture and motivated us to find some conjectural vanishing identities for Gromov-Witten invariants. The latter has been proved recently by X. Liu and R. Pandharipande. We also give a combinatorial interpretation of $n$-point functions in terms of summation over binary trees.

Abstract:In this paper, we obtain a new quantitative deformation Lemma so that we can obtain more critical points, especially for supinf critical value $c_1$, $x=\varphi^{-1}(c_1)$ is a new critical point. For $infmax$ critical value $c_2$, we can obtain two new critical points $x = 0$ (valley point) and $x = e$(peak point) ,comparing with Willem's variant of the mountain pass theorem of Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz,in which $\varphi(e)\leq\varphi(0)<c_2$, but in our new mountain pass theorem, $ \varphi(e)=c_2$.

Abstract:In this paper, we shall prove the following result: Let f be a transcendental meromorphic function, and let P ( z ) be a polynomial with . Then takes every non-zero complex value infinitely often for , by making use of, among other things, particularly an important result of Yamanoi (Proc Lond Math Soc 106:703–780, 2013). This improves the results due to Mues (Arch Math 32:55–67, 1979), Bergweiler and Eremenko (Rev Mat Iber 22:355–373, 1995), etc. Moreover, the corresponding normality criterion is also obtained.

Abstract:We compute the generating series for the intersection pairings between the total Chern classes of the tangent bundles of the Hilbert schemes of points on a smooth projective surface and the Chern characters of tautological bundles over these Hilbert schemes. Modulo the lower weight term, we verify Okounkov's conjecture [Oko] connecting these Hilbert schemes and multiple $q$-zeta values. In addition, this conjecture is completely proved when the surface is abelian. We also determine some universal constants in the sense of Boissi\' ere and Nieper-Wisskirchen [Boi, BN] regarding the total Chern classes of the tangent bundles of these Hilbert schemes. The main approach of this paper is to use the set-up of Carlsson and Okounkov outlined in [Car, CO] and the structure of the Chern character operators proved in [LQW2].

Abstract:This paper investigates various aspects of the distribution of roots and critical points of a complex polynomial, including their variance and the relationships between their moduli using an inequality due to de Bruijn. Making use of two other inequalities-again due to de Bruijn-we derive two probabilistic results concerning upper bounds for the average moduli of the imaginary parts of zeros and those of critical points, assuming uniform distribution of the zeros over a unit disc and employing the Markov inequality. The paper also provides an explicit formula for the variance of the roots of a complex polynomial for the case when all the zeros are real. In addition, for polynomials with uniform distribution of roots over the unit disc, the expected variance of the zeros is computed. Furthermore, a bound on the variance of the critical points in terms of the variance of the zeros of a general polynomial is derived, whereby it is established that the variance of the critical points of a polynomial cannot exceed the variance of its roots. Finally, we conjecture a relation between the real parts of the zeros and the critical points of a polynomial.

Abstract:In this paper we first establish a new critical point theorem which may produce a relationship between the sign-changing critical point, the Morse index, the upper bound of the critical value, the value of the type infk≤dim⁡Y<∞Y⊂E,⁡supY⁡G and the number of nodal domains. An unified approach is introduced for these composite properties. As one application of the abstract theorem, we study the existence of infinitely many sign-changing bound states for the following nonlinear stationary Schrödinger equation:−Δu+a(x)u=|u|p−2u,u∈H1(RN), where N≥2,p>2 and p<2N/(N−2):=2⁎ when N>2; the potential a(x)∈C(RN,R) is a nonnegative function verifying suitable decay assumptions, but being not symmetric or periodic. We obtain the information on the precise estimates of the energies, the Morse indices and the number of nodal domains for these sign-changing bound states. We believe that the abstract theorem in this article will have more applications.

Abstract:Wan and Zhang (2021) obtained a nontrivial lower bound for the number of zeros of complete symmetric polynomials over finite fields, and proposed a problem whether their bound can be improved. In this paper, the author improves Wan-Zhang's bound from three aspects. The proposed results are based on the estimates related to the number of certain permutations and the value sets of non-permutation polynomials associated to the complete symmetric polynomial. And the author believes that there are still possibilities to improve the bounds and hence Wan-Zhang's bound.

Abstract:Motivated by Lang-Vojta's conjectures on hyperbolic varieties, we prove a new version of the Shafarevich conjecture in which we establish the finiteness of pointed families of polarized varieties. We then give an arithmetic application to the finiteness of integral points on moduli spaces of polarized varieties.

Critical points of discrete periodic operators

Abstract:We study the spectra of operators on periodic graphs using methods from combinatorial algebraic geometry. Our main result is a bound on the number of complex critical points of the Bloch variety, together with an effective criterion for when this bound is attained. We show that this criterion holds for Z^2- and Z^3-periodic graphs with sufficiently many edges and use our results to establish the spectral edges conjecture for some Z^2-periodic graphs.

Abstract:Abstract For $c \in \mathbb {Q}$ , consider the quadratic polynomial map $\varphi _c(z)=z^2-c$ . Flynn, Poonen, and Schaefer conjectured in 1997 that no rational cycle of $\varphi _c$ under iteration has length more than $3$ . Here, we discuss this conjecture using arithmetic and combinatorial means, leading to three main results. First, we show that if $\varphi _c$ admits a rational cycle of length $n \ge 3$ , then the denominator of c must be divisible by $16$ . We then provide an upper bound on the number of periodic rational points of $\varphi _c$ in terms of the number s of distinct prime factors of the denominator of c. Finally, we show that the Flynn–Poonen–Schaefer conjecture holds for $\varphi _c$ if $s \le 2$ , i.e., if the denominator of c has at most two distinct prime factors.

Abstract:Because of its importance in number theory and singularity theory, the problem of finding a polynomial sharp upper estimate of the number of positive integral points in an n-dimensional (n≥3) polyhedron has received attention by a lot of mathematicians. The first named author proposed the Number Theoretic Conjecture for the upper estimate. The previous results on the Number Theoretic Conjecture in low dimension cases (n<7) are proved by using the sharp GLY conjecture which is true only for low dimensional case. Thus the proof cannot be generalized to high dimension. In this paper, we offer a uniform approach to prove the Number Theoretic Conjecture for all dimensions by simply using the induction method and the Yau–Zhang [19] estimates (see Lemma 2.3, Lemma 2.4, Lemma 2.5). As a result, the Number Theoretic Conjecture is proven for n=7. An important estimate for all dimensions is also obtained (Proposition 3.1, Proposition 3.2) which will be useful to prove the general case of the Number Theoretic Conjecture. As an application, we give a sharper estimate of the Dickman–De Bruijn function ψ(x,y) for 5≤y<19, compared with the result obtained by Ennola.

Abstract:We define the notion of special automorphisms on Shimura curves. Using this notion, for a wild class of elliptic curves defined over Q, we get rank one quadratic twists by discriminants having any prescribed number of prime factors. Finally, as an application, we obtain some new results on Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) conjecture for the rank one quadratic twists of the elliptic curve X 0(49).
An upper bound for the number of smooth values of a polynomial and its applications

Abstract:We provide a new upper bound for the number of smooth values of a polynomial with integer coefficients. This improves Timofeev's previous result unless the polynomial is a product of linear polynomials with integer coefficients. As an application, we fix an error in the proof of a result of Cassels which was used to prove that the Hurwitz zeta-function with algebraic irrational parameter has infinitely many zeros on the domain of convergence. We also apply the main result to a problem on primitive divisors of quadratic polynomials.
