The Drama Image and Its Symbolism in the Thunderstorm

Abstract:Cao Yu seemed to be fond of using the thunderstorm images,which appear frequently in his works,especially in his representative work The Thunderstorm.Cao Yu exploited this unique image to demonstrate the unique atmosphere before the arrival of the thunderstorm from different angles.From the angles of light and sound,the formidable momentum of the thunderstorm is described,and the characteristic of the thunderstorm image is strengthened.Along with the gradual advancement of the plot,the arrival process of the thunderstorm is shown from far to near and from weak to strong.Originally,the cultural root of the thunderstorm image in The Thunderstorm is actually one kind of collective unconsciousness---the worship of the thunderstorm,specifically the thunder worship.Influenced by a series of ancient tales in which the evil figures were shocked to death by thunderstorms,Cao Yu contrasted the characters and exaggerated the atmosphere,meanwhile,more importantly,he expressed his idea on the characters' sense of sin,the examination of the soul,and consciousness of the redemption.
