Abstract:Based on the questionnaire data of 104 farmers of Xiangshan County,we carried on the empirical study by using Logistic model.This study showsed that farmers used Huinong Card still not common,use frequency was not high.There were a variety of factors that affected farmers using of Huinong Card.In terms of Agricultural Bank,firstly,farmers did not understand the function of Huinong Card,because of the lack of propaganda.Secondly,card formalities was relatively complex,and the credit couldn't meet the need.In terms of farmers,the educational level of farmers,the main work,income sources,living area,friends and family usage,whether migrant workers influence the using frequency of Huinong Card significantly.Finally,based on the empirical results above and in order to improve the Huinong Card,the following points are given.First,innovative means of mortgage loans and increase the line of credit appropriately.Second,improve the function of Huinong Card and tighten propaganda popularization strength.Third,we must strengthen the rural financial infrastructure,and optimize the environment of using cards in rural areas.
Explanations for the Low Participation Rate in the Formal Credit Market by Rural Households in the Poor Areas

Abstract:Using a demand-identified bivariate probit model, this paper attempts to understand the rationale behind the low participation rate in the formal credit market by the rural households in China's poor area. Response to the questions on the willingness to borrowing from the survey data ensure the dependent variable in demand equation is observable, which results in an improvement of estimation efficiency. We found (1) the low households participation rate in the formal credit market can be attributed to the factors from both the supply and demand sides; (2) The wage incomes have a negative and significant effect on the rural households' demand for formal credit; the ratio of non-farm income to total income has a positive and significant effect on the household access to formal credit, though its effect on the demand for credit is insignificant. The latter finding presents a challenge to the argument there is a high demand for formal credit for off farm production and investment in the poor areas of China. Regardless of the changes in the demand for formal credit, to increase the supply of credit alone is not expected to increase the real outreach and improve the welfare of rural households. The paper suggests that measures should be taken to improve the design of loan products so as to increase the real demand for credit.
Microfinance, Self-Employment, and Entrepreneurs in Less Developed Areas of Rural China

Abstract:China is experiencing a transformation, as vast numbers of rural laborers move toward off-farm employment. In such a transformation, the role of credit is unclear. The overall goal of this study is to examine the impact of access to credit by rural households on employment decision-making by rural laborers in China. Based on longitudinal data concerning 1992 rural households in China, this study finds that the use of credit is immense in rural China. Among different types of credit, access to microfinance significantly increased farmers' time working on self-employment activities, especially for the poor households. Credit from formal financial institutions and informal networks had no such effect.

Abstract:This paper accurately depicts the level and the characteristic of farmers' demand for formal credit, and explores the way to meet such demand. Under the conceptual analytical framework with direct identifying and complete cataloguing, the paper tends to identify and measure the farmers' formal credit demands, and estimates the determinants of the credit demands and amounts. The research findings are as follows: firstly, the authors study and classify the farmers' credit demand in the poor regions through an analysis framework with a clear concept. Secondly, the authors estimate the influencing factor in rural credit demand through the improved TobitⅡmodel. Finally, some policy suggestions are proposed for the rural financial system reform.

Abstract:Based on household survey data, this article shows that farmers' demand for credit in poor areas of rural China has increased significantly in recent years, and credits from various sources are used differently in production and consumption. For example, microfinance is used primarily in livestock and non‐agricultural investments, formal credit is often used in crop production, and informal credit is largely used to meet farmers' consumption requirements. Developing a complementary system with various financial channels in rural China, particularly for non‐governmental microfinance, is crucial for meeting farmers' rising demand for credit in both production and consumption.

Abstract:In this study , Logit and Poisson models were estimated to analyze the determinants of farmers'adoption willingness and intensity of integrated mitigation technologies for rice-based cropping systems in China .It was shown that the awareness of climate change and technology demonstration would increase the adoption willingness and adoption intensity, respectively.Besides, extension services, access to credit and irrigation infrastructure were also associated with farmers'adoption willingness and intensity of mitigation technologies .Based on these results , policy recommendations encouraging farmer's adoption of new GHGs mitigation technologies are also discussed from above aspects.

Abstract:Abstract The purpose of this paper is to assess poverty impacts of a joint liability microcredit program targeted at rural households in supply chain. 86×2 sample data was obtained from the single-factor 2-level field experiment in rural China, t-test with paired samples was conducted to make a comparative analysis and SPSS v.21 was used. The findings indicate that joint liability for trading partners in warehouse receipts financing could reduce agricultural loan risks and mitigate the rural households’ financing difficulties.

Abstract:Abstract. This paper seeks to evaluate effects of micro‐credit projects on the poor. We utilize data that we collected in Sichuan Province in 1999 to investigate whether micro‐credit projects have targeted the poor and whether participation in the micro‐credit project increases the likelihood of migration and switching to off‐farm jobs. We find that, although the micro‐credit programs did not help increase assets of the participants, it did help to move one or more of their members into an off‐farm job. Our findings indicate that there is a great deal of benefit in supporting micro‐credit programs.

Abstract:This paper utilizes data obtained from recent farmer surveys in China's provinces of Jilin and Jiangsu to describe credit transactions of agricultural households. The data indicate that while informal credits are significant, they are not profit-motivated, and most are not fungible. The bulk of the fungible credit is provided by institutional sources. In Jilin province, authorities provide ample supply of credit and inputs to agriculture. The majority of farmers there were observed to borrow. In Jiangsu the incidence of borrowing is much lower. However, the extent of unsatisfied demand for credit is highest in Jilin, because inputs are more readily available for purchase in the free market. In the Jiangsu study areas, demand for credit is low because input supplies are limited.

Abstract:This paper investigates the effects of current rural financial credit on the operating performance of family farms and the effects of these differences in China. Using the survey data of two national family farm demonstration bases of Wuhan City, Hubei Province, and Langxi County, Anhui Province, in 2016, a three-stage data envelopment analysis model is applied to quantitatively measure the family farms' operating performance. In addition, the Tobit model and the propensity score matching model are applied to empirically evaluate and examine the overall effects of rural financial credit on family farms, as well as the differences in the effects in different regions and operation types. The evidence implies that in terms of the overall effects, rural formal financial credit has improved the performance of family farms, while rural informal financial credit has had a nonsignificant impact on family farm performance. Moreover, the rural formal financial credit in Wuhan has had a better effect than that in Langxi. Breeding family farms and mixed family farms are more positively affected by rural formal financial credit than are planting family farms.

Serving the Low-Income Group with Microfinance in China

Abstract:This paper demonstrates that micro-finance, initiated by government and reinforced by industrial initiatives, can contribute to serving the low-income group in China. In previous studies, micro-finance is considered an effective method to alleviate poverty, if it can be integrated with some innovative initiatives, by MNCs or by social entrepreneurs, to serve the poor. However, how micro-finance, initiated by government, can help the low-income group in the dasiabig governmentpsila context has not been effectively addressed in the literatures. An exploratory analysis, involving interviews with micro-finance providers and low-income population, original case studies, and archival material, indicates that the micro-finance models in previous studies, as presented by Grameen Bank, may not be suitable in the context of China where a strong government plays important roles in social life. Results suggest that the success of micro-finance initiatives targeting low-income markets is enhanced by the activities of integrating low-income group into the value chain of local economy. Building on the findings of case studies, the paper presents studies which demonstrate how the so-called ldquoCompany+Farmers+Micro-financerdquo mode and ldquoGovernment+Company+Farmers+Micro-financerdquo mode succeed in creating social and economic development in underdeveloped area in China. The findings suggest that micro-finance need to cooperate more with local firms to find some Win-Win business model in underdeveloped areas, in order to help the low-income group get out of poverty.
The Role of Microfinance in China's Rural Public Health: Evidence from the Anti-Poverty Microcredit Program

Abstract:This study presents nonlinear evidence of the effects of a microcredit program implemented in poverty-stricken villages in China on rural public health using multivariate-ordered Probit and IV-ordered Probit models. The results, which were based on a unique set of data gathered from two rounds of official tracking statistics obtained through investigation (2015 and 2018) at a household level, suggest that rural residents' health levels and health insurance demands are related to the formal credit amount that they receive from the microcredit program. Further, the amount of debt that remains to be paid is a negative mediator and the poverty reduction degree is a positive mediator for the health impact of credit. After dividing the sample into subgroups according to income, credit rating and social network, the results show heterogeneity: the health outcomes of groups with a low income, a high credit rating and a strong social network are more significantly improved by loans. The estimations are still robust after using network and village clan numbers as instrumental variables to address endogeneity. Although most of the existing literature demonstrates that credit and indebtedness have negative impacts on health, our results supplement previous findings of the positive causality between access to formal credit and rural public health by showing that the former can exert positive effects by relaxing individuals' external constraints and increasing health spending.

Abstract:This study explores the application of Grameen Bank’s microcredit model in China and its potential impact on regional economic development. The model, which primarily targets impoverished and marginalized groups, especially women, has been instrumental in providing financial services to those who are typically excluded from traditional banking systems. By offering microloans, Grameen Bank has facilitated entrepreneurship among women, thereby contributing to sustainable rural development and alleviating poverty. This work delves into the historical and present context of the model, comparing its implementation between Bangladesh, its origin country, and China. Furthermore, it presents case studies from Lukou Village in Jiangsu Province to illustrate how women's entrepreneurship loans have empowered women and affected regional economic development. In conclusion, the paper highlights the challenges and suggests improvements for the Grameen model’s application in China.

Abstract:Purpose – Internationally, microfinance run by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) is often considered an important approach to meeting the credit demand of rural households, particularly among the poor. However, the perceived competitions with formal financial institutions and concerns about financial risks in the rural economy have impeded the development of microfinance by NGOs in China. Despite these concerns about NGO microfinance, little empirical evidence has been brought to prove them. The purpose of this paper is to provide empirical evidence of the relationship between NGO microfinance and farmers’ demand for formal and informal credit in rural China. Design/methodology/approach – The study is based on a household longitudinal data set consisting of 749 households from 40 microfinance villages in rural China. This study draws evidence from China's largest NGO microfinance. Out of the five county branches where China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation has launched institutionalized microfinance since 2006, the authors selected two of them. A random sampling approach was applied in surveying villages and households. In an effort to create impact assessments, the authors surveyed the detailed information on household characteristics and credit access during the period 2006-2009. A panel data is thus structured for the analysis. Findings – The authors found that the demand for credit in rural China is immense and rising, as formal financial institutions have gradually moved away from less developed regions in rural areas. In its place, informal lending has become a primary source of credit for the poor. However, where NGO microfinance has become available, both formal and informal credit has slowed down. The development and expansion of NGO microfinance did stand up as a substitution for institutional lenders and informal financial networks. Research limitations/implications – The findings have profound policy implications. First, since the development of NGO microfinance fill the demand for credit in rural China and poses low financial risk, the intellectual bias against NGO microfinance is unwarranted. In particular, the regulations that hamper the development of NGO microfinance should be corrected. Second, informal networks do not appear to be costless. Where NGO microfinance can substitute for them, it can mitigate the financial stresses related to the informal credit market.

Abstract:This article empirically estimates the economic impact of farmer credit by IVQR model, which takes both the heterogeneous effect and the endogenous problem into account, using a survey data of 3,000 households from rural China in 2003. Our results show that both formal and informal credit significantly contribute to the farmers' operational income on the whole. However, its impact is heterogeneous on the outcome distribution. The credit does not significantly contribute to the outcome of the poorest and richest farmers, but it benefits the middle and low income farmers, for whom the output elasticity is about 0.08. Since the rural credit allocation leans to rich farmers in China, there exists efficiency loss. The estimators obtained by 2SLS and QR both involve apparent biases.
Social Network and Rural Credit in China;Evidence from CFPS

Abstract:This paper examines the impact of social network on the rural credit in China using the data of 2010 Chinese Family Panel Studies(CFPS).Our results show that social network has positive and statistically significant effects on both the access to rural credit and the amount of acquired credit.Interestingly,social network seems to play a bigger role in access to formal credit than to informal credit.The householder age has inverted U-shaped effects on both the possibility and the amount of credit,while household size,labor resources, land,and living in the village frequently hit by natural disasters all exert positive effects.In addition,those rural households with less education or female-headed households are less likely to obtain formal credit,whilst rich households tend to obtain more credit from formal financial institutions.

Abstract:The literature on microcredit programs has largely focused on positive socioeconomic outcomes and low accessibility issues in farming areas and has provided less insight into the effects of easily acquired microcredit in pastoral areas. Using a case study approach, and econometric models, this paper addresses this gap by examining why and how easily acquired microcredit loans in Inner Mongolian pastoral areas increase the risk to the financial security of households or livelihood risk. Results show that existing microcredit programs increase livelihood risk because loan and repayment requirements do not align with the husbandry production cycle of contemporary Inner Mongolian pastoralists. This misalignment forces pastoralists to borrow from usurers to repay bank loans. Furthermore, households that need to borrow from usurers typically own smaller numbers of livestock and are less likely to be able to repay the usurers by selling animals. Instead, they tend to increase their bank loans in the coming year to repay the previous year’s debt, trapping them in a vicious and ultimately impoverishing circle of annual loans they cannot fully pay back, and feeding increasing debt. We suggest that microcredit programs in semiarid areas should be in sync with the local production cycle and recognize environmental constraints that cause high variation in production seasonally and year to year. Our results supplement previous findings on microcredit applications and are particularly pertinent for other semiarid areas of the world.
Microfinance and Consumption Inequality: Evidence from the People's Republic of China

Abstract:This paper examines whether microfinance reduces consumption inequality of entrepreneurs of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). We obtain data on 160,000 individually owned MSMEs’ usage of microcredit as well as the consumption data of MSME entrepreneurs from the Ant Group, the fintech giant of the People’s Republic of China. Based on the consumption data, we calculate MSME entrepreneur Engel curve for food, and find that its sensitivity is significantly reduced when microloans are taken. The take-up of microloans is associated with a 0.8% reduction in food’s share in total consumption for sample MSME entrepreneurs on average, the magnitude of which is about 5% of the unconditional sample average of the Engel curve for food. The evidence confirms that microfinance helps to reduce MSME entrepreneur consumption inequality. Moreover, we find that the effect is especially evident for active business, for female MSME entrepreneurs, in large and medium-sized cities, and for active business in cities with greater financial inclusion.

Abstract:In this paper,18 million farmers' petty loan records based on real samples from 2007 to 2015 of a region at northern Jiangsu province were used,combined with the local and national CPI index,GDP index,the first industry production index,agricultural production material price index and other macroeconomic indicators.By using the stepwise enter method and logistic model based on maximum likelihood estimation,we selected the indexes which have significant impact on the probability of farmers'petty loan default,then explained the economic meaning of these indexes and analyzed the robust of our model,and finally put forward some policy suggestions.Our study found: The relationship between the credit level index and the farmers'real default is not significant,which means the internal credit rating process of the local credit institutions before the loan can't predict the farmers' credit risk effectively;The micro indicators like interest rate,gender,marital status,occupation and education have great influence on credit risk;National GDP,national CPI,Jiangsu agricultural production price index,one-year lag of the local first industry GDP and other macro indicators also have predictive effects on credit risk;Logistic model can still maintain a good classification accuracy on imbalanced data sets.
